The Futures Only Hope Captain Power

Welcome back to Rotten Ink. We are even closer to Thanksgiving 2025, and I think we should take a look at a hero that not only appeared on TV but also in comics, video games and of course toys! It’s a hero that is fighting against the robots that are wanting to kill off mankind, and that hero is John Connor…wait I mean Captain Power who is backed up by his Soldiers Of The Future who want to end the evil deeds of Lord Dread and his robotic army. For me this is such a cool update to do as I grew up watching Captain Power as well as had many of the action figures, and to be honest it has been decades since I have read these comics so it will be cool to reread them after all this time. So if you are ready, let’s climb into our power suits and hit the battlefield as I think that its time to kick some robotic butt!

Captain Power 1

Captain Power And The Soldiers Of The Future was a live action sci-fi kids show that blended actors along with computer animation to deliver an action packed show that started airing on September 1, 1987 and would last for one season and a total of 22 episodes. The series was created by Gary Goddard and Tony Christopher and would be released by Landmark Entertainment Group in syndication in both America and Canada. The show was 30 minutes long and was about Earth being taken over by robots led by cyborg Lord Dread and a group of freedom fighters of humans that are going up against them to make the world safe for mankind once again. The show would spawn merchandise as well as an action figure line made by Mattel that would interact with parts of the episode on TV as the ships were kind of a light gun game technology. Actor Tim Dunigan would play Captain Jonathan Power with other actors like Peter MacNeill, Jessica Steen, David Hemblen, Don Francks and Maurice Dean Wint all played big roles. The series would make it to home media with episodes coming to VHS and later the full series was released on DVD. The series was supposed to get a second season but it was cancelled and even in 2016 a reboot to the series was in the works, but it as well ended up not being made. The show was met with mixed reviews as many thought the plot of an apocalyptic world was too dark for kids, the toys were not selling well and the budget for the episodes was too high and that is why it is said that the show came to an end. But over the years the show and the toys have gained a cult following and who knows when or if Captain Power will ever show back up with a new series and figures.

Captain Power 2

In 1987 toy company Mattel made action figures to go along with the TV show of Captain Power. The line would last for two waves and would also have vehicles and playsets with one of the big gimmicks for the toys being that the ships would interact with the show as well as VHS tapes that would act like a light gun game. The figures would be a little taller than 3 ¾” figures and would have five points of articulation. In series 1 the good guy figures were Captain Power, Major Hawk Masterson and Lt. Tank Ellis and the bad guys were Lord Dread, Soaron Sky Sentry and Blastarr Ground Gaurdian. And in series two we got heroes Corporal Pilot Chase, Sergeant Scout Baker and Colonel Stingray Johnson and only one villain being Tritor. Growing up I had many of these figures that I mostly got from the store Odd Lots (Big Lots) for very cheap, and I had Captain Power, Blastarr and Tank while my brother had Lord Dread and Soaron…and now that I am thinking about it, I also think that my mom got us a few of them from garage sales. And while I really liked these figures, they also had some very bad flaws as their arm joints would break very easily and on some figures they would suffer from loose limbs syndrome after only a few plays. But even with their flaws, the Captain Power figures were really cool and I cannot count how many times Captain Power teamed with Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Snake Eyes and Captain Kirk to keep the galaxy safe from the evil doers.

Captain Power 3Captain Power 4Captain Power 5

And while Captain Power was short lived, it did spawn some great merchandise for the fans that truly enjoyed the show and toys. You could get your hands on Captain Power coloring books, comic books, lunch box, stickers, posters and home media, and even today fans are making shirts, art prints and buttons showcasing the hero. I am really shocked that Captain Power did not get the Ben Cooper Halloween costume treatment, and it never got a board game. But one thing I do have to talk about is that Captain Power did get a video game for home computers in 1988 that was made by Box Office Games! The game has you play as Captain Power in his fighter ship as you go after Lord Dread. It’s a very fun and simple game that is pretty much just a generic shooter. But as you can see, if you are a fan of Captain Power there is lots of cool stuff out their for you to collect.

Captain Power 6Captain Power 7Captain Power 8

For fans of Captain Power, the talks of a re-boot have been very quiet for many years now but never say never as everything old becomes new again and it will just take something to spark a little interest in the series again and you know someone in Hollywood will get a reboot off the ground…looking at you Jason Blum. Well we are now at the time of this update when we do the comic review, and I would like to thank Lone Star Comics for having these comics in stock and making this update possible. I then would like to remind you all that I grade these comics on a star scale of 1 to 4 and am looking for how well the comics stay to the source material, its entertainment value and its art and story. So with that, let’s join Captain Power and his fight against the machines.

Captain Power Comic 1

Captain Power # 1   ***
Released in 1988      Cover Price $2.00      Continuity Comics     # 1 of 2

The streets of Chicago are a war zone as robots are roaming the streets with orders to take out the humans, but roaming the streets is Captain Power who is destroying the bots as he is trying to save Karl Malenkov, a man who might have the key in order to save mankind. As Captain Power fights on, he is joined by his fellow freedom fighters Tank, Hawk, Pilot and Scout, and they fight hard against the robots as well as Soaron, a powerful flying robot that has the want to kill all mankind! But the battle burns out fast as it’s clear that Captain Power and his friends have the upper hand and this causes the robots to pull back but during this fight they loose Malenkov who is still on the run. Back at the base of Captain Power his team start scanning looking for Karl Malenkov while Power himself goes to the grave of his father, meanwhile Lord Dread gets the news of Powers grave visit and sends Soaron with some robot soldiers to attack him at the cemetery. While back at Power’s base his men chat about the start of this robot war and how Lord Dread used to be friends with Captain Power’s father; that was until a failed experiment turned him into the commander of the robots and hater of humankind. While Captain Power is speaking to his father’s grave he is unaware that Soaron is on his way to kill him.

This first issue of Captain Power is action packed and does a great job of showing the history of this world by explaining the age of the robots taking over and even a little backstory on why Lord Dread hates Captain Power so much and why our cyborg villain is the way he is. The plot is very simple and very fitting as it has Captain Power and his renegade human soldiers trying to track down a scientist that is on the run who might have a way to turn the war with the robots to the side of the humans, but of course Lord Dread and his killer robots are also on the scientist trail and both sides are ready to battle over getting him. Captain Power has no fear and in this issue rushes into battle and brings down many robots all the while he is also looking out for his friends and is clearly a very capable leader as his soldiers respect him and know that his orders are well thought out. All of his fighters are very skilled with Hawk and Tank being ready for battle and Scout doing his job well and even the rookie Pilot learns fast as she does what she needs to do in order to kick some robot butt. Lord Dread is so filled with hate for mankind as his mind is taken over by the machines and he is hellbent on killing the humans and most important to him Captain Power, and because he is so filled with hate and rage he seems to want to rush into things without thinking them out. The robot Soaron is very dangerous as he can fly and listens to orders and those orders are kill and destroy! I feel that this comic does the TV show and toys it’s based on very much justice and is highly entertaining. The cover for this episode is very well done and showcases Captain Power and his crew in the heat of battle and the interior art is done by Neal Adams and is fantastic stuff as I really like the way he draws Soaron and Lord Dread and he makes Captain Power seem like even bigger of a hero and badass robot smasher. This far this is a really good first issue and has held up for me even after all these years! So let’s see what issue two has in store for us!

Captain Power Comic 2

Captain Power # 2   ***
Released in 1989     Cover Price $2.00     Continuity Comics     # 2 of 2

Hawk and Pilot are waiting around the command room and he shares more stories with her with one being about the time Lord Dread had just created Soaron and let him loose on a battle field were he wiped out a full platoon of men and vaporized them with his weaponry! And when Lord Dread figured out that young Captain Power was working at a truck dock to send out supplies he sent his new killer robot to capture him so that he could torment Stuart Power with the baddies having his son. But before the story can continue in currant time Tank and Scout have gotten word about the location of the missing Karl Malenkov as he has been captured by a gang of punks, but when the robots show up and start attacking Scout finds that the punks have sold off Karl to another and now they are going after his trail to try and get him back. Hawk then continues his story about Soaron who now has gotten to the warehouse and has captured the young Captain Power who had put up a big fight before being kidnapped, and at this time Stuart Power was creating power suits for the soldiers so that they can now stand a better chance against the robots and when he finds out Lord Dread has kidnapped Captain Power, Hawk gears up in one of the new suits after Stuart Power makes the choice to go it alone to get his son back, but the power suit that is untested ends up knocking Hawk out cold. Pilot is really into the story but Hawk stops it’s telling as he wants Captain Power to finish it once he his back from his fathers grave, but at the grave Captain Power is attacked and digitized by Blastarr!

Well this comic ends on a big cliffhanger and sadly the third issue in the series was never released, so the way that this series ends is that Captain Power is dead! Our last image of him is Captain Power being blasted and with a look of pain on his face…what a sad way for this series to end and once more shows that Continuity Comics just never cared about their readers. The plot of this second issue has Captain Power visiting the grave of his father and is attacked, while back at base Hawk is telling the story of the power suits and the heroic nature of Captain Power and his father. Captain Power does not get to do much in this issue as he is mostly seen in flashback younger, but he does fight off many robots and tries to save lives, the slightly older version of Captain Power is just visiting in the graveyard and then gets blasted. While Hawk and Pilot are just talking you have to give Tank and Scout credit as they are out in the dangerous world looking for the missing scientist and are having to deal with robots and human punks. Lord Dread and Soaron are showing to be blood thirty killers in both the past and present, and it was very cool to finally see Blastarr in this issue even if it was very briefly. I like the concept of this comic series taking place both in present time as well as in the past as it gives us a little more background into these characters as well as they world they live in. Also, while I am disappointed in the fact Continuity Comics never finished this series, I do have to give them credit as the comic does the TV show and toys it’s based off justice. Plus Captain Power was a very cool and highly underrated hero of the 80’s when it came to toys and kid shows, as sadly it seems like he gets way less respect than his peers like He-Man, Optimus Prime, Voltron and Duke to name a few. The cover for this issue is very cool and eye catching as is showcases Captain Power fighting Soaron and like before the interior artwork was done by the super talented artist Neal Adams who’s art truly made this short lived comic series feel more epic. I really did enjoy both these issues and its truly a shame that we readers never got more issues as Captain Power and his adventures deserved to continue on and have a proper ending. If you like Captain Power the show or the toys make sure to check this comic series out as I think you will really enjoy it. Also checkout the artwork below to see the style of Adams used in this comic series.

Doing this update makes me want to look through my old toy collection to see if I have any of my old Captain Power figures still, and if not collect a few of them back as this was a very fun flashback update for me and took me back to the days of talking toys on the playground and searching the department stores looking for those must have figures. To wrap up our look at Captain Power, I have to say that he made and still makes a great hero for the world of comic books and I would love to see a publisher like IDW, Dynamite or American Mythology bring him back to the printed world and comic book shelves. Our next update will be the big Thanksgiving one and will take us back to the world of Gateway Horror Films as it will be all about that supernatural Disney film “Blackbeard’s Ghost” and the comic adaptation of it! So until next time, read a comic or three, watch a movie or two and as always support your local Horror Host! See you next update as I am wondering if Blackbeard every ate Turkey with his crew?

Horror Host Icon: Jeepers

Welcome back to Rotten Ink. Have you ever sat and wondered what other Horror Hosts have graced the airwaves of California besides Vampira? Well I am here to tell you that state has had a great amount of hosts who all brought their own style and flare to late night moving hosting, and one of the best and earliest to follow in her footsteps was Jeepers, who was the host of Jeepers Creepers Theatre that haunted the airwaves in the 1960’s. Jeepers also had a slew of hosts that not only followed him in becoming the host of Jeepers Creepers Theatre but also inspired others for generations to come in becoming a horror host themselves. It’s with great honor this Halloween season that I bring to you Horror Host Icon Jeepers! So sit back and get ready to not only get scared but also have a few laughs.

Jeepers 1Jeepers 2Jeepers 3

Jeepers is a strange ghoul who has a pale face, wears a top hat and cape and would wander around his dark set and host spooky movies all the while having a good silly sinister sense of humor and would have a very memorable laugh that would fill the air. He claimed that he worked in Hollywood and on horror films and was connected, well that was before he was a Ghoul! Jeepers would also always play up on how famous he was and how people loved his work in film and on the show. He was the original host for Jeepers Creepers Theatre and was the most well loved one as viewers just could not get enough of him! Jeepers would also became a hit on radio when he would team up with musician Frank Zappa in 1963 to release a 45 that had two strange and fun songs called “Dear Jeepers” and “Letter From Jeepers,” and they would be popular on the radio stations around his market in Los Angeles. While his time as the host of Jeepers Creepers Theatre was short lived, his impact and connection with the fans was very strong, and this made him a true icon of the art of Horror Hosting and is one that is still remembered to this day for those who grew up watching him. Jeepers was played by Bob Guy, who was a local actor and personality who sadly passed away on September 10, 1984 at the age of 64.

Jeepers 4Jeepers 5Jeepers 6

Jeepers Creepers Theatre started in 1962 and aired on KCOP-TV, Channel 13 out of Los Angeles and was a super popular show that aired at 10pm and showed the Shock Packages of classic Universal Monster films. The show was a hit from the start, and viewers loved seeing the classic monster movies on TV. It became a popular topic at schools for kids who stayed up late to watch the antics of Jeepers as well as the horrors of the film. The show would lose its original Host Jeepers in 1963 and others would take over the show including Ghoulita who started and ended in 1963, Jeepers’ Keeper from 1963-1965 and The Creeper the final host who lasted from 1965-1966. So Jeepers Creepers Theatre would last for a total of around four years and remained a very popular show on TV up to its final episode. Even once off the air the show’s legacy remained as even to this day for people who grew up watching it and the new fans who discovered it thanks to the internet chat about its legacy and impact on the pop culture in the state of California and beyond. Sadly, much like all the other hosts from the 60’s and even 70’s many of the shows were shot live or the master tapes tapped over to save money as the tapes were way to expensive, and this make most of the shows lost to time.

Jeepers 7Jeepers 8Jeepers 9

On September 10, 2022 at HorrorHound Weekend, the legendary Jeepers made his way into the Horror Host Hall Of Fame! This classic host was inducted by Halloween Jack and was a Legacy Host to be inducted in that year. It was very cool to see Jeepers get the respect he deserves, and it was also cool to hear people laugh and chuckle at the clip shown of him doing what he did best. Halloween Jack did a great job of inducting him in. Jeepers going in has been long overdue and I was glad to see him get this honor. Jeepers was joined in the Class Of 2022 by names like Scarewolf, Sinister Minister, Spooky Spectre and the cast of Midnight Movies to name a few.

Jeepers 10

As you can see, Jeepers is a true legend of Horror Hosting and one of the biggest hosts from California and his legacy still lives strong to this day and his impact can still be felt in the state. We are now at the point of this Horror Host Icon update that we take a look at the episodes I have, and lucky for the world some footage of Jeepers has survived and way back when a fan made a reproduction of the show and that is what we will be taking a look at here, just seeing this footage is amazing and is a great way to showcase his talents. There are no star ratings for these Horror Host shows. I will be writing about what the host does in the episode and the film’s plot will be taken from our friends at IMDB. So with that, let’s see what Jeepers is up to and bask in this classic hosts glory.

Jeepers Creepers The Mummy Curse DVD

Jeepers Creepers Theatre: Mummy’s Curse

Host: Jeepers has gotten himself some tanna leaves in order to get himself a Mummy, and he places them into some sort of liquid and says the magic words. After a few moments Jeepers thinks the leaves have failed and takes us to the movie as a Mummy is creeping up behind him. We next join Jeepers who is unaware of The Mummy behind him and he is very down thinking he failed, but when he turns around he sees The Mummy who is coming every closer and Jeepers lets out a very nervous laugh before we are back to the film. We next join Jeepers as he his being choked by The Mummy who lets him go for a moment in order to go to a commercial break, once back from the commercials Jeepers shows The Mummy his weird family members that consist of a boars head, a white rat and a rubber snake before the monster starts choking him again as we go back to the movie. Jeepers next is making The Mummy some tanna leaf tea and then reads the Mummy’s fortune in the tanna leaves before being choked again after making a joke about a museum…and then back to the movie. Next Jeepers wants to call Hollywood to get The Mummy in some movies, and Jeepers strikes out time after time as the Film Producers shoot down the idea of making a movie with The Mummy…but soon The Mummy finds out Jeepers was faking the calls as the phone bill was not paid and the phone was not plugged in and as he goes back to choking we go to the movie. Next Jeepers reads a fan letter that he got from a fan about loving the show before going into the final part of the nights film. In the end Jeepers puts The Mummy into a coffin for some sleep and then tells the viewers you can not get a Mummy using tanna leaves, but The Mummy shows back up with a noose and attacks Jeepers as the end credits roll.

Movie: An irrigation project in the rural bayous of Louisiana unearths living mummy Kharis, who was buried in quicksand twenty-five years earlier.

Note From Matt: This is a fan reproduction and takes the only known footage of the show to make this episode for the fans.

Jeepers 11

Horror Hosts like Jeepers are very important to local culture and help inspire creative minds in the field of Horror Media, and it’s a shame that so many markets at this time do not have a local made Horror Host on the airwaves and that is why it’s important to support your local Public Access stations as they allow a outlet for many local hosted programs. And of course so do websites and streaming stations like YouTube, The Monster Channel, The Vortexx and Shudder all who deliver Horror Hosts to the masses. While Jeepers’ time on TV was short, his impact on Horror Hosting is long lasting. But I think that it is time to wrap up this Horror Host Icon update as we have more scary updates to come as we countdown to Halloween 2025 and our next update will be a “From Horror Movie To Horror Comic” that will be about The Conjuring 3 and the DC Comic mini series based around it. So until next tim,e read a Horror Comic or three, watch a Horror Film or two and as always support your local Horror Host! See you next update as we explore the world of The Conjuring 3.

Horror Host Icon: Mod Ghoul

Welcome back to Rotten Ink and to another Horror Host Icon update. For this one we will be taking a look at a short lived internet Horror Host who made his mark on the genre and was friends to many hosts at the time. This host would use his webcam and would sometimes host his shows live! This host is The Mod Ghoul, and his show was Weird Web Theater that would last for a very short time but is one that his viewers and fans will always remember. And that is the thing I need to once more stress, to me there is no too big or too small Horror Host as they all meant something to their fans and they all made a mark on Hosting no matter how big or small that mark is. This update will be a fast and fun one so I hope you enjoy it. Get ready for Horror Host Icon: Mod Ghoul!

Mod Ghoul 1

The Mod Ghoul was the host of Weird Web Theater and was a British undead ghoul who had a white face and black circles around his eyes and would wear a black hat as well as leather jacket and was a little sassy when it came to his hosting style. He would sometimes host the shows solo and would also team with other Hosts or even his own kids that were called The Ghoul Kids. The Mod Ghoul during his time being an internet horror host would make a small amount of public appearances with his big one being at HorrorHound Weekend in 2012 where he met his fans as well as many fellow horror hosts. But as soon as this Ghoul showed up, he disappeared leaving a small mark on the world of horror hosting. The Mod Ghoul was played by Gregg Childress who was a musician and was in the band “Vertigo In Children” and as well was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a father of two and was very proud at the time of being The Mod Ghoul. Gregg would pass away on July 6, 2015 at the age of 49.

Mod Ghoul 2Mod Ghoul 3Mod Ghoul 4

Weird Web Theater started airing on YouTube and Facebook starting in 2011 and would be hosted by The Mod Ghoul along with The Ghoul Kids as well as Ohio horror host A. Ghastlee Ghoul and during its run, other popular hosts would fill in on episodes. Most episodes were shot on Mod’s web camera which added a murky creepy feel to some of the episodes, and they all would only have opening and closing segments. The Mod Ghoul also had another show called “Fright Club” that would start the same year. The show quickly gained a solid following and would go on to have shows air on The Monster Channel as well as on Public Access stations that ran the Horror Host Underground block of programing. But as quickly as the show started, it ended as by 2012 new episodes were coming out less frequently and by the end of the year Weird Web Theater vanished, with even its YouTube channel disappearing. And just like that, the show’s run was over. While Weird Web Theater was a very short lived show, it did have its viewers and fans that made sure to tune in for every new episode that was posted.

Mod Ghoul 5Mod Ghoul 6Mod Ghoul 7

Weird Web Theater was a show that I would watch a few episodes of as I always enjoy seeing A. Ghastlee Ghoul hosting films, as he is one of Ohio’s classic and funny hosts. The Mod Ghoul was an interesting host who, while I was not a super fan of, I still can respect for what he did for his fans with his show and he did try to make online hosting his own. It was smart to bring in other hosts to help bring more attention to it. I also think that Mod would sometimes take to much time in-between episodes as well as I feel he walked away from the show way too soon, but I do understand his reasons as it was depression, and that is something that can drain your creativity out of you. But with that, let’s move onto the review part of this Horror Host Icon update, and I would like to remind you that I will be covering episodes that I own on DVD and that I will be taking the films plot from our friends at IMDB and I will be writing about the antics of Mod on each episode. So if you are ready Mates, lets’ pull up a seat and grab a drink and spend some time on the web with the one and only Mod Ghoul.

Weird Web Theater 13 Ghosts DVD

Weird Web Theater: 13 Ghosts
Starring – Charles Herbert & Jo Morrow    Not Rated     1960

Host: It’s the one-year anniversary of Weird Web Theater, and Mod Ghoul is relaxing in his living room along with the Ghoul Kids and they all talk about their love for the night’s movie. They also do some silly bits, impersonations, talk about the actors in the film, the 3-D effects with this being in 2-D before they usher us into the movie. Once the movie is over, we once more join Mod Ghoul and the Ghoul Kids in the living room and they start talking about actor Telly Savalas, who was not in the night’s movie, as well as chat about the TV Show Adam 12. In the end the Ghoul Kids wander around the room, as Mod Ghoul thanks us for tuning in and supporting the show.

Movie: Reclusive Dr. Zorba has died and left his eerie mansion to his penniless nephew Cyrus Zorba and his family. Along with the house, the Zorba family has also inherited the occultist’s collection of 13 ghosts, who can only be seen through Zorba’s special goggles. The family members, their lives at risk upon the discovery that Dr. Zorba’s fortune lies hidden somewhere in the house, receive aid from unexpected quarters as the threat to their lives is revealed.

Note From Matt: This episode is missing most of the end credits for the show.

Weird Web Theater Spider Baby DVD

Weird Web Theater: Spider Baby
Starring – Lon Chaney Jr. & Sid Haig    Not Rated     1967

Host: The Mod Ghoul welcomes the viewers to the show after a hiatus and thanks the viewers and talks a little about the night’s film and the actors. He as well acts all zany and weird for the camera. He also delivers a few jokes as the camera is close on his face the whole time. In the end we join Mod Ghoul again, and he makes some jokes about spiders as well as the film and says someone should make a sequel to the film before ending the episode with the promise of more episodes to come.

Movie: In a dilapidated rural mansion, the last generation of the degenerate, inbred Merrye family lives with the inherited curse of a disease that causes them to mentally regress from the age of 10 or so on as they physically develop. The family chauffeur looks out for them and covers up their indiscretions. Trouble comes when greedy distant relatives and their lawyer arrive to dispossess the family of its home.

Mod Ghoul 8

The Mod Ghoul and his Weird Web Theater started in the 2010’s during a big boom of the next generation of hosts trying to make their name and mark on the history, and Mod was one of the many that entered the scene for a short time and would fade away without giving their viewers a proper ending. I know that over the years many fellow horror hosts had their differences with him on a personal level, but he still was part of the horror host dysfunctional family and is a part of hosting history. And with that, this update has come to an end, and before we part ways, let me tell you that the next update will be about The Lockhorns, that married couple from the Sunday Funnies! So until next time, read a comic or three, watch a movie or two and as always support your local horror host. See you next update as who doesn’t like the drama between a married couple every Sunday morning…am I right?

Bucky O’Hare The Master Of Croaking Toads

Welcome back to Rotten Ink. The Holiday Season is in full swing as the air has that chill and Jack Frost is really nipping at our noses, so I say we grab a hot chocolate and put another log on the fire as we need to talk about another iconic hero character from my youth that was a star in comics, cartoons, toys and even video games. This hero is the one and only Bucky O’Hare who was very popular for a very short time in the 1990’s. I am sure many of you readers grew up being a fan of Bucky O’Hare, and this update I am sure will flood you with memories of reading the comics, watching the cartoon, playing with the action figures as well as playing the video game and that is a good thing as the holiday season should make you feel like a kid again! So with that, let’s travel to space and see what Bucky O’Hare and his crew have in store for us this winter’s day.

Bucky O'Hare 1

Bucky O’Hare is a character that was created by the team of Larry Hama and Michael Golden and who made his debut in 1984 in the Continuity Comic series called “Echo Of Futurepast” and would appear in that series throughout its run even gracing the cover a few times. And Bucky’s adventures in that series were a hit for readers who enjoyed his space themed adventures as the popularity of Star Wars and Star Trek was still very high around this time. And when Echo Of Futurepast came to an end after 9 issues in 1986, the character would finally get his own comic series in 1991 in order to help promote the character who was now getting his own cartoon, toys and merchandise, and it was clear that around this time toymakers were looking to cash in on the big success of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as they had taken the world of comics, toys and cartoons by storm and was making many companies big money. Bucky O’Hare was already a comic star way before the TMNT were around, and he was a wise choice to try capture some of that talking fighting animal money. But while Bucky O’Hare was able to very briefly capture a big following, he quickly faded away and his comic series, cartoon and figures all came to an end and his popularity started to fade. But in some positive news, Bucky O’Hare stayed popular in England longer, and the comic series released alongside the cartoon ran for 20 issues! But while Bucky O’Hare never was able to climb to the popularity of the TMNT nor was he ever able to make that impact in culture like they did, he still to this day has a very loyal following for those who grew up with him and his crew and this to me makes Bucky a true icon of the mid 80’s and early 90’s in both cartoon and toys.

Bucky O'Hare 2Bucky O'Hare 3Bucky O'Hare 4

Bucky O’Hare And The Toad Wars! started in 1991 and would be released by Claster Television for First Run Syndication and would run for one season and a total of thirteen 30 minute episodes. For this series Jason Michas voiced Bucky O’Hare, and Jay Brazeau would voice Toad Air Marshall, the main villain of the series behind KOMPLEX, the computer program that would be voiced by Long John Baldry. And I should also note that Marvel Productions was a part of this cartoon series production as well, and it’s odd that Marvel Comics never did a comic series for the cartoon as it would have made a great series for Star Comics if they would have kept that branch running. The cartoon would followed Bucky O’Hare and his crew as they would be at battle with the Toads, and crazy during this battle among the stars Earth kid Willy DuWitt who travels via portals to help in these battles. The cartoon when put out on home media would only be released on VHS here in America, and sadly not all the episodes would get an official release making fans have to get the series on the Grey Market…but overseas the complete series would get a DVD release. And when the episodes aired, I watched every episode during its run as I was a fan of this fun and silly cartoon, and a cool fun fact the first episode aired on my 12th Birthday! This cartoon was also a big hit at school as almost all my friends watched it, just like most of us also had the action figures. While the cartoon was very short lived, it made an impact on the kids of the 90’s as it was very popular at least in Waynesville, Ohio in the early 90’s.

In 1992 and after the cartoon series would come to an end, Bucky O’Hare made the leap into the world of video games, and more importantly into the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), as a very fun side scrolling action game. The game would be released by Konami and would have you play as Bucky O’Hare as well as many members of his crew on a quest to bring down the Toads and the game offers a pretty good challenge for players and when released was pretty popular among my group of friends as many of them watched the cartoon and collected the action figures. The game is one that I own and have played over the years and even beat when I was a teenager. Now the game is considered rare and sells for around $120-$200 loose and depending on shape. Also I should say that Bucky O’Hare has gotten the Konami Handheld game treatment and also had a arcade cabinet version that could have had up to 4 players going at once. So say what you will about Bucky O’Hare now, but in the early 90’s he was super popular.

Back in 1991 when the cartoon was going strong, Bucky O’Hare and his crew would of course be made into action figures and they were done by Hasbro who at the time was a very iconic toy company as over the years they have done such series as Transformers, Pound Puppies, Cabbage Patch Kids, Battle Beasts, M.A.S.K., G.I. Joe, Inhumanoids, WWF Superstars, Rom The Space Knight and so many more. The figures would be in scale with the Playmates TMNT figures and would feature Bucky O’Hare and his crew members Dead-Eye Duck, Willy DuWitt, Commander Dogstar, Bruiser and AF.C. Blinky and the baddies in the series included Toad Air Marshall, Al Negator, Storm Toad Trooper and Toadborg. The series would also have two vehicles released, the Toad Croaker and the Toad Double Bubble. The series would only last one wave and I can remember them being on the shelves at Hills and Hearts as a kid. I had Bucky and a Toad Trooper as a kid and I can remember my friend Jeremy having way more of them. I always wanted Bruiser but could never find him, as I can remember I even asked for him for Christmas one year. And as I have grown up, I have gotten more of these figures as I really do like the Hasbro Bucky O’Hare figures as I think they did a great job on these figures and capture the look of the characters really well. So how many of you readers grew up with these figures? Check out the middle picture below as it shows what figures were supposed to be in Wave 2 and that included for the Good Guys, a new version of Bucky, Jenny, Pit Stop Pete, Rumble Bee and Kamikaze Kamo! And for the Baddies it would have added Total Terror Toad and Sly Lee-Zard.

Bucky O’Hare once the cartoon and action figures was released also had a flood of merchandise released for fans to collect over the years and this includes Home Media, Shits, Coloring Books, Lunch Box, Watch, Stickers, Video Games, Colorforms, Sleepingbags, Shoes, Watches, Puzzles, Halloween Costumes among other cool items for fans to collect and add to their collections. But sadly because the cartoon did not last very long nor did the toy series the merchandise would stop being made pretty fast. But thanks to Bucky O’Hare building a cult following over the years newer merchandise has been made about him showing that classic character never truly go away. And growing up, I had the toys, coloring books as well as the NES Game.

It’s crazy to think that in 2024 that Bucky O’Hare is not as popular of a character for the days youth and to be honest he pretty much just has a following with those kids of the 80’s and 90’s who grew up reading his comics as and watched his cartoon. But to be honest I did see a young lady that came into my job buy Bucky O’Hare toys and she was super happy to get them, so maybe the modern generation will discover and become fans of him. It is now time for us to get to the review part of this update and I would like to thank both Game Swap Kettering and Lone Star Comics for having these issues in stock an making this update possible. I would also like to remind you that I grade these comics on a star scale of 1 to 4 and am looking for how well the comics stay to the source material, its entertainment value and its art and story. So if you are ready, let’s head to space and watch as Bucky and his crew croak some Toads!

Bucky O'Hare Comic 1

Bucky O’Hare # 1   **1/2
Released in 1991     Cover Price $2.00     Continuity Comics     # 1 of 5

A fleet of Toad airships are on the tail of Bucky O’Hare and his crew opening fire on them and causing Bucky to have to give the order for his crew to get to their battle stations. As Bucky and Jenny are in the cockpit Dead-Eye Duck mans the guns as Blinky and Bruce are in the engine room trying to make fast repairs. The Toads make a direct hit and this kills Bruce The Ape and leaves the ship in really bad shape and as Dead-Eye Duck and opens fire back at the Toads, Bucky rushes to the engine room to see if he can help Blinky get it fixed so they can high tail it out of the battle, but there is no time and they must make a decision fast to try it not knowing what will come of pushing the ship to warp drive. Meanwhile on Earth in the city of San Francisco were young Willy DuWitt is working on his science fair project as the youngster loves science but seems to get picked on by fellow kids for being to smart and even his own parents give him a hard time as they are hippies and want him to protest the world…and all he wants to do is work on science stuff! Back in space Bucky makes the decision to flip the switch to warp just as Willy turns on his experiment on Earth and something big happens!

This first issue is a very fun read and drops us right in the middle of the action as Bucky and his crew are under attack and must make a decision that could kill them all…but they are already pretty much dead if they don’t choose, so it’s very much a double edged sword. And at the same time super smart Earth kid Willy is working on a science fair project that seems to match up with Bucky’s warp drive issue and you know this is leading to the meeting of the minds! Bucky O’Hare is a great Captain and his crew clearly respect him and its crazy that he finds himself in a situation that could leave them all dead all because the Toads hate all things mammal! He clearly trusts his right hand gal Jenny and respects the heck out of the shooting skill of Dead-Eye Duck and even values the words of Blinky his robot friend. Poor Bruce the ape is killed dead pretty early in the issue when he takes a blast, and I will say Bucky does not seem too sad about the loss. The Toads seem to be having fun tormenting Bucky’s crew and yet also know that they are a threat and are very skilled. The issue is filled with lots of spaceship fighting action as well as drama as Bucky O’Hare must think quick on what to do to try and save his crews life, and really you can tell it’s very stressful for him. Poor Willy DuWitt is a youngster who is smart and loves science, but seems to not be able to catch a break in the world as he is mocked and picked on by his fellow youngsters and even his own parents don’t understand him as they are protesting hippies who want him to join their causes. Of course my favorite character in this issue is Bucky O’Hare cause he is a true hero, but if I had to choose another sidekick character I would say Dead-Eye Duck cause he seems to love to kill Toads and is very skilled with his gun. The cover for this issue is fun and showcases the moment Bucky and his gang meeting Willy for the first time and is eye catching. The interior artwork is done by Michael Golden and is really solid stuff and I dig the way he draws Bucky O’Hare as well as all the ships. Over all a great first issue that does it’s best to introduce the readers to the cast and starts off the story running, and with a cool cliffhanger ending makes me want to see what’s next!

Bucky O'Hare Comic 2

Bucky O’Hare # 2   ***
Released in 1991     Cover Price $2.00     Continuity Comics     # 2 of 5

In the room of Will DuWitt, things get really dark and very odd as the darkness is like a gelatin outside his windows and when he hears a noise he heads towards it as on the ship of Bucky O’Hare a gelatin like doorway that leads to the bedroom door of Willy appears and as they investigate Bucky and his crew run into Willy and everyone is shocked and slightly scarred as it’s clear a dimension has been crossed and has caused chaos in both dimensions. Willy and Blinky figure out that the the science project and their damaged engine warp is what caused this rift and is also somehow protecting Bucky’s ship from the Toads attacks. This causes the Toads to leave to get bigger ships to attack with and Willy comes aboard and says that he can build them a new warp unit that way they can get away safely as Willy heads back to his room for parts he is followed by Bucky and Dead-Eye as Jenny and Blinky stay behind to guard the ship and the portal. As Willy gathers the parts the Mother Toad Ship appears and they storm the ship and take Jenny hostage, a short time later Blinky appears and tells Bucky of the attack and capture and this causing Bucky to spring into action! Now Bucky O’Hare along with Dead-Eye Duck, Blinky and Willy DuWitt band together with one cause and that is to save Jenny from the Toads.

This second issue is lots of fun as the plot has Bucky meeting Earth kid Willy who is their only hope to fix their warp drive and to save their butts from being blown up, but also we get the drama of Jenny being kidnapped by the Toads! Bucky O’Hare finds himself now being faced with having to trust a young Earth kid with the maintenance of his ship as well as that he is not really a spy or a danger to his crew, as they kind of just bump into each other thanks to a weird dimension portal door. And like any good Captain Bucky also makes sure to get his crew to their stations and when one is kidnapped and taken he has a call to arms to rescue her. Willy DuWitt himself as well shows that he is noble as he jumps right in to help the crew by repairing the engine and as well going with them to fight the Toads to rescue Jenny. We also learn for sure that Bucky and his crew are out numbered by the Toads who are doing what they do on the orders of Toad Commander who wants all furry lives to come to an end in their galaxy. The issue also has more ship battles to add to the action and we learn that when the dimension door is open the ship can be protected by a force field of time and dimension pieces. The cover for this issue is pretty cool and has Bucky and his friends in a small ship trying to fight off the Toads…this does not happen in this issue but it’s still a great cover. The interior art is once more done by Michael Golden and is very solid work and fitting for the subject that is Bucky O’Hare. I feel that the second issue is slightly better than the first as we are now into the heart of the story while issue one was more of a introduction to our cast of good guy characters. So now lets see what issue three has in store for us, and if Bucky is able to save Jenny and croak some Toads in the next issue!

Bucky O'Hare Comic 3

Bucky O’Hare # 3   **1/2
Released in 1991     Cover Price $2.00     Continuity Comics     # 3 of 5

Bucky O’Hare along with Willy, Blinky and Dead-Eye are back on their ship and are trying to track down the Toad Mother Ship so that they can come up with a plan in order to save Jenny…but they are having to luck! Willy DuWitt asks for a history lesson on the Toads and Blinky is happy to help as he projects it and Willy learns that the Toads were a peaceful race until they became greedy for goods and made the mistake of creating a super computer called Komplex that ended up mind controlling all the Toads and turned them into it’s army of foot soldiers with the goal to conquer the galaxy. And that the mammals of the galaxy is why Bucky O’Hare and his crew was created to fight back and stop them from killing as well as stealing the planets they conquered natural resources. And soon Dead-Eye Duck spots the ship that is feeding off a small planet for energy, and Bucky lands the ship on the other side of the planet and they wait for Jenny who uses her powers to beat the heck out of the Toads and makes her way to her rescue.

What a fun issue as the plot of this one is mostly about what has caused the Toads to turn into such a war hungry and evil race and it all came down to them being very greedy and trying to but all types of things and trusting a mega computer to solve all their issues…but the computer in turn just takes over their brain and makes them fighters for it’s own conquest for power. With the smaller plot being the rescue of Jenny who we learn is one badass lady as she has some very powerful powers an uses them in order to knock out a wave of Toads before calmly walking out of the ship. I also like that in this issue we see Willy DuWitt get his space costume that is really a Berserker Baboon’s outfit and that is a good thing as we also find out that Toads fear the Baboons! This issue also gives us our first look at Toad Commander who is the one threatening and questioning Jenny when she was a prisoner. While this is a good issue it really is more of a history lesson and the action is slowed way down and the rescue of Jenny happens way to fast, but while it is kind of a slow issue the fact we get more of a background on the world the comic series is building makes it a very solid read. The one thing that I have to say is that we are now three issues into a comic series that only ran for five issues and the biggest letdown this far is that we have not gotten to see Bucky O’Hare kick some Toad ass in hand to hand or even gun to gun as of yet. The cover for this issue is the best so far and has Bucky and his crew being surrounded by the Toads and is super eye-catching. And I am sure you guessed it Michael Golden once more did the interior art and like before it’s great stuff. With that lets see what issue four has in store for us, and if we finally get to see Bucky in action and bring down some Toads!

Bucky O'Hare Comic 4

Bucky O’Hare # 4   **1/2
Released in 1991     Cover Price $2.00.    Continuity Comics    # 4 of 5

On this unknown planet Bucky O’Hare and Blinky must find the person in charge to sign some papers giving them permission to fight against the Toads while Dead-Eye Duck and Willy get on a jet scooter to scope out the Toad Mega Ship and see if they can find Jenny. As Bucky meets the strange owner of the planet a Mouse like creature who lives in a utopia room, Dead-Eye and Willy have Toad Fighter Ships aware they are there and Jenny is trying to find her way off the massive ship without exposing to much of her powers. Dead-Eye and Willy are in deep trouble an they come up with an idea to crash land inside the Toad Mega Ship as this would make it so the Toad Fighters can not open fire on them, and in horror Jenny watches as her friends come busting in as does Bucky who can see what is going on thanks to a magic mystical ball that the mouse has.

What a cliffhanger as this issue leaves you hanging on wither or not Dead-Eye Duck and Willy DuWitt survive their crash landing inside the massive Toad Ship all the while their friends can not do a thing to help them! We also get a look at Komplex who has now made himself a robotic body and is watching Jenny as he is intrigued by her witch like powers and wants to learn all he can about her and it. Bucky O’Hare and Blinky are stuck this issue dealing with the odd ball owner of the planet who will not grant them permission to fight, but does spend his time trying to give them things and even allows them to see what their friends are doing. Commander Toad wakes up after being knocked out and is still talking about his fear of Baboons and when he sees the suit on Willy he gets scared and sends out tons of Toad Troopers to protect the ship. Dead-Eye Duck does his best to try and get he and Willy out of trouble and once more shows that he has skills as he is able to out move the Toad Ships as well as at least make it in once piece to crash land inside the big Toad ship. While I enjoyed this issue I once more have to point out that we get a chase in ships, but no action as Bucky himself is trying to get a paper signed instead of fighting alongside his crew to rescue one of his own that is in danger…just very odd as the main hero in this series this far has gotten to do very little. The cover is ok and once more just showcases a space ship chase, and the interior art by Golden is good. It is crazy to think that we only have one more issue to go an this far the creative team has kind of just putted along and have yet to showcase what Bucky O’Hare and his team can do, so lets hope the final issue gives us the action we need.

Bucky O'Hare Comic 5

Bucky O’Hare # 5   **1/2
Released in 1992     Cover Price $2.00     Continuity Comics    # 5 of 5

Bucky O’Hare and Blinky soon find that the Mouse has control of reality and that the lavish utopia they were just in was not real, while Dead-Eye and Willy survive the crash but the suit of Willy’s has caught fire and Dead-Eye shoots him with foam to put the flames out. The Toad Troopers show up just in time to see Willy who looks like a Baboon be foaming around his mouth and they think he is mad and the Troopers run away in fear. The Toad Commander ends up sending a Void-Droid out in order to kill Dead-Eye and Willy who are looking for Jenny as well as a way out, and the Void-Droid is very dangerous…but Willy is able to destroy it with one shot from his squirt gun! Shortly after Dead-Eye and Willy find Jenny and the three end up in a workshop an see a Toad Ship and know that this is their way to escape. Meanwhile Mouse is flying Bucky and Blinky on a rock to their friends all the while talking about the universe and it’s secrets. While inside Toad Troopers are on the heels of Dead-Eye and friends as we end on that cliffhanger.

Whelp, as you can see, this comic series just never got finished as the terrible Continuity Comics never released the rest that was just a reprints of a over priced 1986 Graphic Novel that was around 48 pages that they charged $40.00 for. And if Continuity didn’t fill every issue with a mountain of ads this series could have been fully released. And I am not sure why the comic was not finished, but if I had to guess maybe low sales or even just pure laziness from the company. The plot of this issue has Dead-Eye and Willy surviving the crash inside the Toad Ship and finding Jenny all the while Bucky is stuck with the Mouse who just babbles on about how smart they are and the secrets of the universe…like Bucky never makes it to the Toad Ship in this issue…so silly. One part of the comic that was really awesome was the Toad Troopers running in fear when they think Willy DuWitt is a rabid baboon due to the foam he was sprayed with to put out the flames as his suit was on fire. I feel that if you were a reader who was a big fan of Bucky O’Hare or even just discovered the character thanks to the toys and cartoon this unfinished mini series did the character dirty as he never gets to showcase why he is such a bad ass green fur rabbit captain from outer space. As this whole series besides the first issue they do not showcase him as the hero we the fans know he is. Plus I feel that they make Dead-Eye Duck, Jenny, Blinky and Willy DuWitt seem more like the heroes as throughout the five issues they see more action and bring down more Toads than Bucky does. While the pacing is off from issue to issue it makes sense as the comics are just taken from the old Graphic Novel and it was clear Continuity put zero time and care into these single issue reprints as they took this chance just to over kill the comics with ads and the same ads in almost every issue at that. The cover for this issue is really cool and shows Bucky, Dead-Eye and Willy all looking like they are ready for action as a portal is behind them. The whole comic series interior art was done by Michael Golden and his style is pretty cool and very fitting as I feel he draws not only Bucky O’Hare great but also space in general. I really did enjoy this series up to the unfinished end and think that Bucky O’Hare deserved better than how Continuity Comics treated him and that publisher would close up in 1994 after many years of legal issues, poor sales and readers pointing out just how poorly their comics were done. To sum it up a fun read for sure but unfairly treated by a terrible publisher who clearly had no respect for their readers nor creators. Checkout the artwork below to see the style use by Golden in this series.

Bucky O’Hare was a great character who entertained his fans through the 1980’s and early 1990’s, and some could say even to this day as new fans have found his comics, cartoon and toys and have discovered just how cool he and his crew are. I really wish that at the time of his cartoon’s release that a company like Marvel Comics or Archie Comics would have gotten the comic rights as I truly think that they would have done him justice and would have more than likely given a true final issue and not pulled the plug before the story was even finished. And for those who have never read or watched Bucky O’Hare, give it a shot this holiday season and see if you become a fan. Well with that, our Bucky update has come to an end and our next update will be our big Christmas Eve one and will be about the Greek God Zeus! So until next time, read a comic or three, watch a film or two and as always support your local Horror Host. See you next update as we spend some time on Mount Olympus with the father of such heroes as Hercules!

Thanksgiving Looney Tunes Style Starring Sylvester & Tweety

Welcome back to Rotten Ink. As you can see, it’s Thanksgiving 2024, and I think it’s time to once more take a walk into the world of cartoons and more specifically Looney Tunes as these cartoons were such a big part of so many people’s childhood and make for a fun holiday update. Who doesn’t want to talk about the likes of Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig and Daffy Duck, all characters we have covered before here on Rotten Ink, but for this Turkey Day update, we will be talking about Sylvester and Tweety, who are some of the biggest stars in the world of cartoon duos. This will be a fun and silly update that will add some fun and silliness to your Thanksgiving, and as the turkey and ham are still in the oven and the potatoes have yet to be mashed, let’s sit back enjoy this holiday and see what Tweety and Sylvester have in store for us. I also want to thank you all very quickly for spending apart of your Thanksgiving with me here at Rotten Ink, and I truly hope that these Thanksgiving Day updates make your holiday just a little more fun.

Sylvester and Tweety 1

Sylvester Pussycat Sr. first appeared in 1939 as an early version of the character in the cartoon “Naughty But Mice,” and the Sylvester we all know and love came around in 1945 in the toon “Life With Feathers,” and the character was created by Friz Freleng. Sylvester is the sworn enemy of Tweety Bird and is a tuxedo cat whose fur is black and white with a red nose. He has a speech impediment and has several different personalities. Sometimes he’s sneaky and other times he’s more of a caring feline. He is has son named Sylvester Jr. and also is the mentor for Furrball. Besides starring in the regular Looney Tune cartoons, he is also featured in the films “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, “Space Jam”, “Lonney Tunes: Back In Action” and “Space Jam: A New Legacy”. Sylvester over the years in his many different appearances has been voiced by the likes of Mel Blanc, Bill Farmer, Jeff Bergman, Terry Klassen and Eric Bauza, to name a few. Tweety is a yellow canary who has a high pitched voice, big blue eyes and long eyelashes and made his first appearance in 1942 in the cartoon “A Tale Of Two Kitties” and quickly became one of the series most loved characters. Tweety is a sweet character for the most part, but also really does love getting cats that are trying to eat him in trouble or even causing them harm! Tweety was created by Bob Clampett and over the years has been voiced by such actors as Mel Blanc, Jeff Bergman, Bob Bergen and Billy West. Tweety has appeared in films as well as many other merchandise and even at one point a very popular tattoo for women. So as you can see, both Tweety and Sylvester are very iconic and popular characters in the Looney Tune universe and are at the top of the pack just behind Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig for most toon fanatics.

Sylvester and Tweety 2Sylvester and Tweety 3Sylvester and Tweety 4

Both Sylvester and Tweety have had their fair share of cool merchandise for fans to collect that include shirts, posters, trading cards, action figures, plush dolls, drinking glasses, board games, video games, coloring books, key chains, home media, comic books, candy, masks, hats, stickers, buttons, school supplies and so much more! No joke, if you are a fan of either of both of them you can have so many cool things to collect. Growing up I had lots of cool things that mostly were Sylvester as I was never a fan of Tweety, but I do know I had a Tweety drinking glass from Pepsi. For Sylvester, I had the Pepsi drinking glass, a big plush doll, a figure from an Arby’s kid meal, an eraser and trading cards. And stuff that featured them both I had the comics, coloring books, giant Sylvester stuff doll as well as some video games, they appeared in as well as home media releases of the cartoon. I have lots of great memories of being a kid and drinking chocolate milk from my Sylvester glass! So if you are a fan and a collector, make sure to check out some of the stuff I mentioned above.

Sylvester and Tweety 5Sylvester and Tweety 6Sylvester and Tweety 7Sylvester and Tweety 8

Growing up I watched lots of Looney Tune cartoons on TV as well as on VHS that we would rent from the public library as well as buy at garage sales and dollar stores. I always enjoyed the antics of Sylvester as I am a cat person and his silly lisp and plans on how to capture and eat Tweety always cracked me up…and come on, we all know that Tweety was a pain in the ass and we all wanted to see him get eaten. Sylvester is in my top 5 favorite Looney Tune characters of all time! There was always something very special about pouring a bowl of cereal as a kid and watching a Tweety and Sylvester cartoon, and even to this day when I see an episode it makes me remember back to those days, and I get really nostalgic for not only them but for Looney Tunes in general as they were a big part of my childhood as the cartoons and comics always seemed to be on and around. In fact, I can even remember reading a Tweety & Sylvester comic one year right before a SuperBowl Game, and right before we chowed down on some chicken wings…while I can remember the comic, I cannot remember who played and won the game that year, showing that Sylvester and Tweety was bigger than the NFL Superbowl that year for me. The thing is Looney Tune characters like Sylvester & Tweety are kind of immortal when it comes to their impact and longevity in the world of entertainment as they seem to always be able to reinvent themselves in new cartoons or films that make that day and age kids become fans.

Sylvester and Tweety 9Sylvester and Tweety 10Sylvester and Tweety 11

One of my favorite episodes of Sylvester and Tweety was called “Hyde And Go Tweet” that is super funny and ads a dash of horror to the humorous nature of a Looney Tune Cartoon. And honestly when you think about it Horror and Looney Tunes have crossed over lots in the classic days of the series with all types of monsters and ghosts making appearances and scaring the characters silly. But back to the cartoon at hand in this one Tweety is being chased by Sylvester and finds himself in the lab of Dr. Jekyll and after drinking some of a formula Tweety turns into a giant Hyde like monster bird and laughs and chases Sylvester around all the while turning back and fourth between regular Tweety and Monster Tweety. In the end it turns out have been a terrible nightmare that Sylvester was having but while awake it looks as if Tweety could get into the lab and turn into the monster and this cause Sylvester to run through a brick wall in order to escape the situation. Such a goofy spooky watch as Tweety as the Hyde Monster looks crazed and like he really could kill a cat and laugh while doing it. It’s great that Sylvester at the end of the cartoon is so overtaken by fear that he is willing to run through a brick wall in order to get away from a possibility. If you have never seen this episode, make sure to do so as you can find it on DVD, VHS and even streaming. Also they made a figure of the Tweety Hyde Monster and it was awesome as well.

Sylvester and Tweety 12Sylvester and Tweety 13Sylvester and Tweety 14

As you can see, Tweety And Sylvester are true icons when it comes to the world of cartoons and just American culture in general as they have entertained for decades now and have proven to still be popular to this day. And talking about them both really has brought me back to my childhood and made me feel like a kid again, and reading these comics will also be a flashback to my youth as between my brother and I growing up we had so many of these Looney Tune comics that we would get from garage sales. I would like to thank Bell Book And Comic, Game Swap Kettering and Mavericks for having these issues in stock and making this update possible. I would also like to remind you that I grade these comics on a star scale of 1 to 4 and am looking for how well the comics stay to the source material, their entertainment value and their art and story. So with that, let’s get ready to laugh at the zany adventures of these two cartoon icons.

Tweety and Sylvester Comic 21

Tweety & Sylvester # 21   **1/2
Released in 1971     Cover Price .15     Whitman     # 21 of 121

“Survival School” Sylvester is a nervous wreck as Tweety has opened a school for birds to be able to defend themselves against cats and every time Sylvester tries to capture a bird with his old tricks, the birds fight back and always escape with him looking like the fool. Sylvester gets an idea to dress as a bird and enroll so that he can have a chance to capture and eat some birds, but during classes Tweety uses the disguised Sylvester as an assistant and beats him up as it’s clear he knows its his enemy. “South Pole Cat” winter is coming and Tweety is about to head south to stay warm. Sylvester is upset that he has to stay and freeze so he buys a bird call whistle to use and keep Tweety around as he knows he will try and help a fellow injured bird! Tweety dodges Sylvester’s attacks and finds out that his feline friend is making the calls with the whistle and messes with it’s settings and this causes Sylvester to call all types of birds, who end up taking him south with them…but his joy in the sun is short lived as the larger birds run him off and he ends up in the South Pole running from penguins! “The Relaxed Cat” poor Sylvester is stressed and not sleeping well, and after reading a book he finds out that the tweeting songs of a Tweety Bird will help relax you, so he tries to force Tweety to sing for him so he can sleep. Tweety refuses to do so and gets Sylvester to all types of favors for him, from getting him seeds to taking him to the bird bath. Finally Sylvester climbs under a table and Tweety is about to sing and lets out a loud screech that causes Sylvester to jump and bump his head on the table and knocking him out cold.

This issue has three silly tales that features Tweety and Sylvester doing what they do best and that is entertain! And what is shocking is that this issue has zero guest appearances from any other Looney Tune characters and for this time for these comics, that is very shocking! Tweety in this issue is a teacher of self-defense, a would be savior to an injured bird, a tool to relax to and a little bird who is able to hold his own against a very hungry and angry cat. Sylvester in the issue tries his best to trick, capture an eat Tweety and is foiled at every attempt and even gets beat up by not just Tweety but other birds. The best of the three stories is South Pole Cat for me as I found it fun that Sylvester does not want to be the only one having to suffer through the cold weather of winter and tries to trick Tweety into having to stay and deal with it as well, and instead he gets taken south with the birds and gets bullied by them and forced to hide out in the South Pole that is colder than the winter he fled from. To be honest, I could not pick a weak story as I found the other two stories to be very fun as well and were on equal ground of fun. The cover for this issue is cool and has Sylvester trying to eat a plate of spaghetti as Tweety is playing a pungi and making the noodles act like hypnotized snakes. The unknown artist does the interior artwork and who ever they are they did very good job of bringing Tweety and Sylvester to the pages of comics. Reading this issue for this update was a lot of fun and made me feel like a kid again, and I am looking forward to reading the next issue.

Tweety and Sylvester Comic 33

Tweety & Sylvester # 33   **1/2
Released in 1973       Cover Price .20      Whitman      # 33 of 121

“Look Before You Leap” In the living room of Granny, she and Tweety watch as Sylvester shows them is dance moves as he is going to ballet dance classes. As Sylvester and Tweety take naps after he danced for them, Granny heads out to try and get a surprise for her well behaved cat. But when she is away, Sylvester goes after Tweety who uses a firecracker to hurt his hand and this causes Sylvester to leave the home and blow off steam. As Sylvester dances down the ally, two cats trick him into jumping over a fence and get chase by a guard dog so that they can get inside the house and steal food from the refrigerator, and this causes him to even crash into the home owner and hurting the man. Meanwhile Granny gets home and tells Tweety that she has signed Sylvester up to be on a TV Show’s talent show…and Tweety finds him and once at the station Sylvester leaves in a hurry when the injured home owner was the sponsor. “Good Friend Charlie” Sylvester is hanging out with his owl friend Charlie Wiseowl in a tree, and Charlie tells Sylvester that the stars say that today is going to be his day and this causes the feline to go after Tweety who keeps dodging his attacks and causing Sylvester to be an annoyance to the people around him, all who end up beating him up! When Tweety makes it home to Granny’s he finds that a giant red parrot is in his cage as Granny is babysitting the mean bird for the neighbors, and Sylvester going on the good luck statement from Charlies rushes in and grabs the Parrot thinking it was Tweety and the mean bird beats him up! In the end Sylvester, who is injured, is told by Charlie Wiseowl that he misread the stars and that today is a bad day for him. “The Model!” Tweety is going to model for a marble statue for artist Jim, and Sylvester is hungry and tries to eat Tweety but things goes wrong for the feline as he keeps getting crushed by the chunks of marble, but in the end Jim wins a contest an the Tweety statues is now on display at the local museum.

Man in this issue poor Sylvester gets beat the heck up by so many different things as besides Tweety he also gets beat up by a dog, a red parrot, normal humans including a baby and he gets crushed by lots of marble. It is almost like in this issue Sylvester has switched place with Wile E. Coyote on the amount of abuse he takes throughout it. Tweety also goes from being a “friend” to Sylvester to being kind of cruel to him and enjoying watching him get smashed. It is nice to see Granny in this issue as she was a big part of many of the cartoons we all grew up watching so it was nice to have her in the mix. The best story in this issue for me had to be “Look Before You Leap” as it is a really zany story that has Sylvester learning how to dance and by accident ruins his chances of winning a contest all because he allowed some ally cats to con him into being a distraction while they steal food and the main judge is the man the cats robbed and Sylvester by accident is injured. And for my least favorite, while it is a fun read, it would be “Model!” as it is a very basic and quick story with a silly ending of Sylvester being booted out of the museum cause he wants to eat the marble statue of Tweety. The cover this time around has Tweety stealing the cherry off the top of a cupcake that Sylvester is trying to eat, and the unknown artist returns and does another great job of drawing these characters. Two issues in, and so far these comics hold up how I remember them and while they are different from the cartoons, they do have that touch that makes them feel like they sort of fit in.

Tweety and Sylvester Comic 54

Tweety & Sylvester # 54   ***
Released in 1976      Cover Price .25     Whitman      # 54 of 121

“Afraid Of Flying” both Tweety and Sylvester are watching the news and they show a new roller coaster ride and this causes Tweety to be afraid to fly as he is dizzy and don’t want to crash! Sylvester comes up with an idea to keep scaring Tweety from wanting to fly again that way he can capture him and eat him! But all attempts backfire on the hungry cat as he keeps getting hurt in trying to chase the running Tweety. In the end Tweety is cured of his fear of flying, and Sylvester becomes afraid of walking but is cured quickly by the smart ass Tweety who gets the cat to once more chase him. “Door To Door Dummy” Sylvester decides that he wants to become a door-to-door salesman as he applies for free samples of the product that is little birds. Sylvester does not want to sell the samples but eat them and when the box arrives inside is one mean and angry vulture who is wise to the cats plan and picks him up and drops him off in front of a bulldog who wants to beat up the cat, and as the vulture flies off Sylvester is running from door to door trying to sell himself to a safe home to get away from the dog. “Nine Lives To Live” after chasing Tweety for around three hours Granny yells at them for making so much noise and Sylvester decides to watch some Soap Operas with Granny and falls asleep while watching them, and in his dream Tweety is like Cinderella and being mistreated by others and keeps getting bad news and when he wakes up he feels bad for Tweety and treats him well and stops chasing him around. “In The Middle” has Tweety being chased by Sylvester who is being chased by a dog when a scientist uses his change gun on the running animals that changes them in size it soon turns into Tweety chasing Sylvester who is running after the dog and poor Sylvester is still in the middle of this chase! Tweety then wakes up from his dream and feels bad for Sylvester and brings him some cat food for not even winning in dreams. “Don Catsonova” Sylvester is dressed in a Don’s outfit and captures Tweety in a box to give away to Chi Chi Cat a feline from Spain that he has fallen in love with, and when he tries to win her heart her bodyguard Diego tells Chi Chi that he loves her and goes after Sylvester who is saved by Tweety who bashes the bigger cat over the head with a vase and the two are able to escape as Chi Chi checks on the dazed Diego.

This issue of Tweety & Sylvester features five stories featuring the two frenemies with only Granny being the other Looney Tune character to make an appearance. This issue’s stories all flow really nice together and delivers a really fun read and I would say the best issue I have read up to this point as I feel all five stories are silly good reads with I think my favorite being Don Catsonova as seeing Sylvester dress up and try to win the heart of a Spanish lady cat only to be challenged for her heart by a bigger meaner cat was classic cartoon stuff. Plus I like how when Sylvester is on his way to his lady the other cats around the area make fun of his outfit that is until he pulls his sword on them and they back down and praise his look. Imagine if Sylvester would have been able to swoon Chi Chi, makes you wonder if she would have been featured in more comics? I also like that Tweety saves Sylvester from the bigger cat and as they flee from the fight he alerts him that Granny and himself love him and they should get home…very cool. If I had to choose my least favorite story in this comic I would pick In The Middle, as it is a one-page gag that is based around a silly dream that Tweety is having. This issue has lots of silly laughs and the cover features Tweety taking a bath via a water hose that he has poked holes in as Sylvester looks annoyed, and like before unknown artist does the interior and is great stuff as they once more captured the look of the characters so well. Let’s see if the next issue will continue the great work that these comics have showcased this far.

Adventures Of Indiana Jones Comic Art 84

Tweety & Sylvester # 84  ***
Released in 1978      Cover Price .35   Whitman    # 84 of 121

“First Class” Sylvester is crushing on Wanda, a cat who was born with class and is way out of his league, so he heads to be taught class by his friend Sissy Fenwick who teaches him the basics and even dresses him up in the finest hipster gear. Sylvester ends up talking Sissy into going with him when he tries to ask Wanda out. The next day Sylvester comes home and is happy and Tweety asks how it went and Sylvester says well only after he punched Sissy in the eye after he tried to flirt with Wanda and she was so impressed with Sylvester’s manly attitude that they have a date for that weekend. “Cat And The Giant” the chores are all done around the house and Granny sits in the living room to read Tweety and Sylvester the story of Jack And The Beanstock and as the story starts Sylvester drifts off to sleep. In his dream Sylvester and Granny are poor and live in a small shack and Tweety has been missing for days…and this makes Granny sad and she gets mad when Sylvester uses their last dime to buy a bone. But Sylvester ends up being a hero when he finds that the giant dog Butch has Tweety and thanks to tossing the bone and having Butch chase it he is able to save Tweety and return him to Granny! But when Sylvester wakes up he is back at it chasing Tweety around the house as he is now hungry. “Back Seat Driver!” Granny has to re-take her drivers test, and Sylvester and Tweety are worried about her passing as they think they will starve to death if she cannot drive to the store, so they two hide in the car to try and help her pass but they really end up helping her fail! And its Tweety and Sylvester that end up having to walk to the store to get the food, as she was to wait a week to take the test again. “Save Our Cats!” a representative for the group Save Our Cats is visiting the Knights Of The Alley Cats as they want to spread the message that cats need help, and they need volunteers to hand out flyers. Sylvester and Weezy are selected and have a terrible time doing so as people rough them up and they both end up getting hit by a car putting them in the hospital!

This is another really good issue that has a total of four stories featuring our star duo and each of them bring their own humor and entertainment! The thing about these comics is that after running so many issues, you know that the creators had to be stressing over ideas to make them fresh and funny and with this being issue 84 it seems that they still had their minds working on making one solid kids comic series based off of popular cartoon. I also like in this issue that many of the stories have Sylvester and Tweety working together and while at times they do have the chase around the house in a odd way it’s clear that they are friends of sorts. Plus this issue has Granny around again and she always helps add to the wacky stories. The best story for me is Cat And The Giant as I find it to be a fun one and I like how it had a basic retelling of Jack And The Beanstalk just missing the Beanstalk and its Tweety that the giant has taken. And I could not choose a bad one as I think these all are great takes and none of these are lacking in the entertainment department and all brought on some chuckles. And to be honest First Class almost took the top spot as I love that Sylvester gets a date after punching another cat in the eye as the lady feline thanks that he his macho! The cover for this issue is pretty cool and has Tweety sleeping on a TV Set, and the unknown artist strikes again with his great interior artwork. Over all another great issue that made me feel like a youngster again. Also Weezy Cat is a cool side character as he has cool hair and sleeps lots.

Tweety and Sylvester Comic 87

Tweety & Sylvester # 87  **1/2
Released in 1978      Cover Price .35   Whitman    # 87 of 121

“Cat Encounters Of The Bird-Kind” Tweety is sitting with his young relatives and tells them about a time when the Earth was ran by birds and this was long before man and cats came to be, but something was making birds disappear and it was the first cat! The cat is tricking all the birds in order to eat them, but one Scientist Tweety figures it out and saves the others. And as the story ends Sylvester tries to attack Tweety and he tells his young nephews how easy it is to out smart cats. “Hans Clicker And The Silver Skates” Tweety and Sylvester are in Holland and chat about Han Clicker a feline relative of Sylvester who was strange and wore wooden sneakers, but when he gets a pair of ice skates he by accident saves the town and becomes a hero when he plugs a whole in the dame with his thumb. “The Catnapper” Granny’s friend is going on vacation and his cat Reginald is staying with them until he gets back, and Reginald is a help around the house, plays chess with Tweety and even makes meals for them to eat and this attention is getting under Sylvester’s skin so he decides to attack this new cat at night only to get beat up himself as he did not know that Reginald knew Judo! “Merry Music Maker” Sylvester is being made fun of by his cat friends as well as Tweety for his guitar playing and singing and every time he starts people leave, but he swears that he will make money with his guitar and does when it bonks a robber on the head and he collect the reward money.

This issue is a really mixed bag as I did not fully enjoy the first two stories as I found them a little bland and generic, but the last two stores were super fun and silly and is what I would want from a comic book based on Tweety and Sylvester! This issue showcases the origins of cats trying to fake UFO’s in order to eat birds, showcases the hero relative of Sylvester who lived in Holland, has Sylvester getting jealous of another cat and getting beat up for it and lastly shows our feline friend’s lack of musical talent that still gets him paid! Tweety besides in the first story is very much a supporting character as most of this issue showcases Sylvester and his strange life, and I am ok with that as I think he is the more interesting character between the two. My favorite story is Merry Music Maker as I enjoy the fact that Sylvester is walking around town with a guitar and trying to make money by street performing and only buy luck does he make any money and that is cause a robber runs into him causing his guitar to flip in the air and bonk the crook on his head and knocking him out and then comes the sweet reward money. My least favorite story is Hans Clicker And The Silver Skates as its really kind of boring and while silly just does not bring in any laughs. The cover is cool and has Sylvester playing golf but Tweety is pranking him by putting gum on his club causing the ball to stick to it. With the unknown artist once more doing the interior art and doing a great job as one of my favorite panels in this issue has Sylvester and Tweety by a campfire and Sylvester calling his friends cowards! While not the best issue in the series I have read for this update, it still had two really good stories.

Tweety and Sylvester Comic 88

Tweety & Sylvester # 87  ***
Released in 1978      Cover Price .35   Whitman    # 87 of 121

“Guests Not Pests” the owner of a small traveling circus has fallen sick and while he is in the hospital Granny takes in the animals as guests! And while Tweety likes having them there Sylvester does not and keeps trying to escape the house so he does not have to do any chores. And when Sylvester finally escapes he runs into Linda Cat who is hiding in some bushes as some mean kids have been throwing things at her and chasing her around the streets, Sylvester saves her and gets back to Granny’s house and the Circus Animals come outside and scare the kids away! In the end when an alley cat mocks the Circus animals Sylvester punches him in the eye as he respects them now for their help. “Jar Wars” Granny is making preserves and has to run next door to get a missing item as Sylvester goes after Tweety and by accident spills the preserves on himself and the chase continues into the near by woods where Sylvester is grabbed by a massive bear who wants to lick the sweet preserves off him, as Tweety mocks him as he knows that when they get home Granny is going to be really ma about her preserves being spilt. “Matter Of Habit” Sylvester is watching TV and sees about habits and learns about a boy who when he hears a bell will climb over pillows to find cookies to eat, so he comes up with an idea of using a gong to leave bird seed for Tweety in order to capture him and make him into a sandwich, but when the gong goes off bother Tweety and Sylvester snack and they figure out to never use the gong again besides for regular meal times as they both have gotten chubby and into a bad habit. “Friendly Fellows” Sylvester has built a skateboard and while learning to ride it looses control and crashes into the cat Friendly Fred and this causes Fred to break his glasses, later Sylvester is carring lumber to Granny’s house as he wants to build himself a small home outside to relax in and once more by accident smacks Fred in the face with the lumber knocking him out and when trying to help Fred, Sylvester drops him into the lap of a female cat who’s boyfriend punches Fred knocking him even more silly. In the end Sylvester gets his little house built but Fred appears with an axe and chops it down out of rage.

This is yet another fun issue and I really do think the creators behind this comic series deserve some praise for bringing the classic Looney Tune characters to the pages of comics and while the core of the cartoons are present the comics also kind of build a new world around them, like I feel that the stories in the comics is what took place between the cartoons. And I need to point out that in this issue a group of kids are tormenting a cat by chasing it and throwing object at it, and those kind of kids are terrible and if you have any of them in your neighborhood who do things like this call your local authorities on them as they are clearly youths who need mental help. And I like in this issue that once more most of the stories are about Sylvester as Tweety is more of side player and this issue our feline star goes from being lazy, to learning respect, to trying to be a protector, to being covered in food and being a treat for a hungry bear, becoming a jerk and of course chasing Tweety around as he wants to eat him for a snack. While Tweety showcases that while he does sometimes bait Sylvester into chasing him he also clearly looks at him as a friend and even tries to get him out of trouble. The issue also introduces use to a few more the neighborhood cats as we meet Linda Cat and Friendly Fred, and I like that in all these issues so far we do get to meet these other cats that roam around and know Sylvester. The best story in this issue for me was Friendly Fellows as I enjoyed the story of poor Fred getting beaten up and Sylvester being kind of a jerk about all the pain he has caused his fellow feline friend, only for Fred in the end to be pushed to far and armed with an axe he chops down a small home Sylvester spent time and money on to build. While the rest of the stories are good if I had to choose the weakest I would say Jar Wars as it is a short and silly story, but I do like that when the preserves fall on Sylvester he looks like a gooey version of the Pink Panther. The cover is goofy and has Sylvester and Tweety standing behind a photo stand, and yep you guessed it the interior art by unknown artist is great stuff and has that classic Looney Tune comic look that is iconic for those who grew up reading them. So with that lets see what the next issue has in store for Tweety and Sylvester.

Tweety and Sylvester Comic 94

Tweety & Sylvester # 94  ***
Released in 1979      Cover Price .40   Whitman    # 94 of 121

“Count Me Out” Tweety and Sylvester are walking down a street as they find a poster that says if a cat can survive three rounds with Slugger Sam they will win $100! And after some pushing Sylvester takes the challenge and steps in the ring with Sam who wants to knock out his opponent fast. Sylvester acts silly for two rounds and is able to survive but the third round he runs into the fist of Sam and is knocked out, and while Sylvester did not win the prize money he does win free dance classes! “Color Scheme” Granny wants to get a new oil painting for the living room and as she goes for a walk to get it, Sylvester and Tweety think that she means to paint the walls an the two start doing so and cause a massive mess and the walls look terrible and once Granny get back home with the painting she is mad over the mess made of her walls. “Movie Buffs” Sylvester opens up a movie theater in the garage and is showing old bird watching videos that Granny made, but when the mean alley cats show up they refuse to pay and Tweety goes and gets a dog to be the door man and makes them all pay as they leave the showing. “Sleepwalker” in this one Sylvester is sleepwalking through the city as Tweety follows and makes sure he is not hurt, and in the end Tweety gets Sylvester back home safe so he can nap some more.

This issue has four adventures starring Tweety and Sylvester and is another really fun and entertaining issue that has some of my favorite stuff mixed into the stories as you long time readers know that I am a fan of seeing films in the theater and one of my favorite sports in boxing! And we also meet a few more of the alley cats around the town with most not having any names but they are bullies and try and steal movie tickets and the other is Slugger Sam a very strong cat who is a boxer. And my favorite story in this issue is Count Me Out as I love that Sylvester tries to box a massive cat named Sam to win some prize money and only takes the match cause Tweety is the one pushing for him to take the match and last the three rounds. And man Sam with one stiff punch knocks Sylvester silly and causes our favorite feline to not win the cash. The weakest of the stories is also one of the shorter ones as Sleepwalker while fun it is also very basic and has been done even then many times in cartoons and comics as one character sleepwalks around dangerous sites while the other character tries to keep them safe. The cover has Sylvester mowing the grass as Tweety is mowing the welcome mat and it’s a fun sight gag. The interior artwork is done by Unknown Artist again and is like before very cool stuff and I like the way they drew bother Sylvester and Tweety as well as all the side characters. And once more I have to say that I am shocked we have yet to come across a cameo for such other Looney Tune characters as Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny or even Daffy Duck! With that lets get to the next issue I own and see what’s next.

Tweety and Sylvester Comic 95

Tweety & Sylvester # 95  ***
Released in 1979      Cover Price .40   Whitman    # 95 of 121

“Making Dough” a group of crooks run a bakery and in the back of the shop they are making fake money, but the mice are eating the money and this causes one of them to nab Sylvester off the street with orders to kill the mice! But Sylvester notices the counterfeit machine and money and with the help of the mice and the outgoing cakes he is able to get the attention of the police and the crooks are arrested. “Out With The New And In With The Old” Sylvester is damaging furniture to try and make it look like an antique cause he thinks he can sell it for lots of money, so Tweety follows and had his woodpecker friends help damage some furniture. “Tough Mutt!” Sylvester is watching a hypnotist on TV and falls under his spell as he watches and thinks he is dog and the TV is turned off by Tweety and this causes Sylvester to not be snapped out of it and he walks around barking like a dog and even starts a fight with Butch the bulldog! And after walking around town as a dog it is Butch who snaps him out of it when he snaps his fingers and Sylvester ends up running away a scare cat! “My Life As A Cat” Sylvester is sitting down to write a book about his life when both Tweety an Butch demand to be in it, and when Sylvester is done and leaves the pages on the table both Butch and Tweety add to it and this causes the book to be mostly about them and even the Publisher changes title name to feature their names. “A Lazy Crazy Day” it is Sylvester’s day off and when Granny calls for him he hides for her as he does not want to do any chores, and it’s Weezy that alerts him that he has seen Granny an Tweety drive away before Sylvester goes back home and falls asleep in his bed! But a little later Tweety awakens Sylvester and tells him Granny was looking for him to go to the amusement park with them and he of course missed out going by hiding.

In this issue we are treated to five stories with many of them once more being a bigger showcase for Sylvester with Tweety playing the supporting character. And you have to love the fact that Sylvester is catnapped in one of the stories and with the help of some mice and cakes is able to bring down a criminal counterfeit ring and be a hero as well as truly show that while he wants to kill his friend Tweety he still is a good feline…for the most part. And also in this issue Butch the Bulldog plays a bigger part and alley cat Weezy Cat also returns for a small cameo, and it was cool seeing both in these roles as they both now feel like apart of the series with Butch being in many issues up to this part. The best story in this issue is Making Dough as I like the fact that Sylvester is a reluctant crime fighter and uses his mind in order to stop crime! While the other four stories are good I would say Out With The New And In With The Old is the weakest as it was only a one page gag story over furniture and woodpeckers, but keep in mind this one page gag is even really good and is more cleaver than most modern kids comic being released in these modern times. And it is clear at this point that the creators of this comic series new that they could do more and better stories with Sylvester than Tweety and that is why he is given more panel time and more stories that revolve around him. The cover is cool and is a gag on exercise with once more the Unknown Artist bringing their great artwork to the interior pages of this comic. And with that let’s head to the next issue and see what it has in store for us.

Tweety and Sylvester Comic 110

Tweety & Sylvester # 110   **1/2
Released in 1981      Cover Price .50   Whitman    # 110 of 121

“A Case Of Canary-Itis” Sylvester is walking down the street and sees Alfie Cat passing him by with a extreme tummy ache and Professor Cat tells him that he thinks Alfie has Canary-Itis a sickness that felines get after eating canary birds! Once home Sylvester sees Tweety and tries to avoid eating him as he does not want to get sick, but later in the day Sylvester and Tweety see Alfie and he is fine and Tweety tells Sylvester that the reason Alfie had a tummy ache was no sickness it was cause a canary he was chasing punched him in the gut! And this news gives Sylvester relief and he once more starts his chasing Tweety was back up. “Soft Landing” its snowing outside and Tweety wants Sylvester to go ice skating with him, but the feline refuses as last winter he slipped in the ice and got hurt…but after some encouraging words and some tied on pillows Sylvester heads to the ice with his friend Tweety. “Keep Calm!” Sylvester and his friend Bernie Cat are hanging out and before they part Bernie lends him a book about how to stay calm, and Sylvester rushes home to try and read it. But while at home Tweety keeps annoying him and no matter how hard he tries to ignore him the pesky bird just keeps getting under his skin. In the end Sylvester snaps and throws the book at Tweety and wants to have him for lunch! “Not For Sale” Granny is on the phone talking about selling some items at a bazaar and Tweety and Sylvester miss-understand her and think they are for sale and run away, but after wondering around trying to find a new home they are picked up by Granny a few minutes later who settles the misunderstanding and they all head to the sale to have fun. “One Life To Go” Sylvester is chasing Tweety around town and has an accident that has him hit by a truck and Tweety alerts him that he is on his last life of his nine! Sylvester runs home and hides in a closet as he does not want to die, but after chasing Tweety around the house and a bookshelf falling on him Sylvester thinks his nine lives have reset and is now wearing hockey pads in order to protect his next nine lives better.

This issue of Tweety and Sylvester is a pretty fun one but is a little basic when it comes to the five tales featured here as they bring some laughs but they also just seem like all are really just backup stories. And like before Sylvester is the main star of the comic but I will say Tweety also seems important in many of the stories. We also meet the ally cats Alfie Cat, Professor Cat and Bernie Cat with all of them being friendly with Sylvester and it’s clear that Bernie is one of Sylvester’s friends. The issue also features Granny and Duke with the later being super mean as when Sylvester and Tweety run away from home when they think they are being sold and need a place to stay Duke will let Tweety stay with him but not Sylvester. The best story in this issue is One Life To Go as I like that Sylvester is worried about his last life when he lost most of the others doing silly things like trying to get an apple from a tree and even gets killed four times by Butch the Bulldog! Plus the end laugh of Sylvester’s nine lives starting over again and him now wearing hockey gear to chase after Tweety is just fun cartoon stuff. The one story that did the least for me was A Case Of Canary-Itis as it was just kind of rushed to build the story of Sylvester being scared of eating a canary, but I do think the payout of the sickness really being that a mad canary punched a cat in the gut. The cover is great as I like that it has Sylvester and Tweety eating Chinese Food as it looks like Sylvester himself is eating some fried rice and that is one of my favorite things to eat! And you guessed it unknown artist once more did the interiors and killed it as they made them look like the cartoon characters but also have their own comic style and look. Over all a good issue that did it’s job as I was entertained reading it.

Tweety and Sylvester Comic 111

Tweety & Sylvester # 111  **1/2
Released in 1981      Cover Price .50   Whitman    # 111 of 121

“Butch’s Party” Sylvester gets a letter in the mail that is a invite to the Birthday Party of the bully cat Butch who is so mean that if he does not like his gift he will beat you up! Sylvester goes and talks to some of his alley cat friends like Weezy and Norris to see what they are getting him, and then he panics when they have good gifts and he only has .36 for a gift! So he tries to make him a kite that ends up flying away and Tweety comes up with an idea to make it look like Sylvester was in an accident and can not attend the party, but it backfires for everyone as Butch now is going to have a second party later so Sylvester can attend! “ The Funaways” Granny has taken Sylvester and Tweety to the beach and as she takes a nap Sylvester chases Tweety around as he wants to have a juicy snack! But Tweety tricks Sylvester into following him into the beach’s amusement park and this causes Sylvester all kinds of pain and excitement and once back to Granny she is mad that Sylvester is passed out, as she wanted him to stay awake and watch Tweety. “The Photo Story” Sylvester has found Granny’s old box camera that only has three pictures left to take as he wants to enter the Knights Of The Alley Cats Photo Contest and his three subjects are Butch The Bulldog, Weezy and Tweety and all three end up getting hurt when the pictures are taken. And in the end Sylvester wins a prize that is about what not to do when you take photos. “Black Belt Birdie” Sylvester walks past a window and sees birds learning karate and gets scared of the idea of Tweety taking classes and beating him up! While walking home he finds that bulldog Butch’s house is destroyed an his arm is in a sling, and once inside Tweety’s cage is smashed up and this scares Sylvester silly. Sylvester goes to the basement and tries to learn to defend himself but when he finds out that Tweety does now know karate and that Butch’s injury was just an accident…and this means Sylvester chases Tweety around as he is hungry and doesn’t have to fear being beaten up! “Flight Of Fancy!” Tweety is outside in his cage with the door open in order to get some fresh air and Sylvester is trying to figure out away to capture him so that he can eat him! Sylvester uses all types of tactics from being fired out of a cannon, to swinging on a rope and even springs on his feet and each attempt ends the same way and that is with Sylvester being hurt! In the end covered in bandages Sylvester kicks some rocks that end up hitting Butch the Bulldog who chases the injured Sylvester up a tree. “Pills And Spills!” Granny has decided to give Tweety some vitamins to help him grow and Sylvester mocks it and even by accident knocks himself out while beating his chest. Meanwhile a tired and injured eagle crashes into a bucket of yellow paint and decides to rest on the roof of Granny’s and when Sylvester wakes up he thinks that the Yellow Eagle is Tweety who had already grew thanks to the vitamins, he uses a rope to wrap around the eagles leg that ends up taking him for a ride that see him crash through a window of a house that a realtor was showing who looses the sale and punches Sylvester for the lost house sell.

For this issue we are treated to six stories featuring Tweety and Sylvester and they are up to all types of mischief from heading to the beach to trying their hand at photography and of course sometimes the pair are friends working together and other times they are under each others skin and Sylvester is trying to have a birdie sandwich! And that is one of the more fun aspects of these comics as each issue from story to story the friendship between Sylvester and Tweety is present even when they are trying to annoy the other, as always when one is in need of help the other is their to do so. This issue also has cameos from Granny and Butch The Bulldog who both at this point are clearly supporting characters. For me the best story of the bunch was Butch’s Party as I like that the neighborhood bully cat throws himself a birthday party every year and makes all the alley cats attend and give him gifts, and this year Sylvester has no money to get a gift so he and Tweety try and figure out a way for him not to attend the party and get beat up…great silly stuff. If I had to pick the weakest story I would say Flight And Fancy and while it is a funny tale, it is also the one that feels like you have seen the gags many times in other kids comics. The cover is fitting for this issue as its about photography and yep Unknown Artist was at it again doing the interior art, but I will say you can tell different artists worked on this issue as many of the stories look different from each other. Over all another solid issue and one that I enjoyed reading!

Tweety and Sylvester Comic 113

Tweety & Sylvester # 113  ***
Released in 1982      Cover Price .60     Whitman     # 113 of 121

“Elecronicat” Sylvester has created a robot cat to use in his attempt to capture Tweety, but things get crazy when Sylvester looses control of the robot cat and it destroys the house and even knocks down Granny as Tweety leads it outside! Finally Butch the Bulldog breaks the robot cat and stops it’s rampage as Sylvester is in big trouble and is forced to clean up the house. “Quarantined” Sylvester is chasing Tweety around and they end up in the kitchen when Tweety uses pepper to make his feline attacker sneeze and this triggers Granny to take him to the vet, and later Sylvester uses the pepper trick on Tweety and now Granny thinks both her pets are sick and place them in a room together! But Tweety thinks fast and uses the vents to get more pepper and uses it on Granny and now the three of them have to quarantine for 10 days together and this saves the birds life as Sylvester wanted to eat him! “World’s Fastest Feline” Sylvester is chasing Tweety around the block when the feline is asked to join a race for cats were the winner gets their face on a cat food box and gets me meet the companies female feline spokes lady! And in order to stand a chance Sylvester has Tweety fly in front of him in order to gain the speed, but things turn south when Tweety goes off the track in order to talk to a friend and this causes Sylvester to loose as well as all the other cats who end up following his lead! In the end in anger the cats are chasing Sylvester who is chasing Tweety. “Meating With Defeat” Sylvester is craving meat and cannot stand to eat anymore dry cat food, so he attempts to steak a steak from Butch the Bulldog and on his first attempt he gets tossed over a fence and his second one he by accident pulls the hot grill on himself with a fishing pole! In the end out of anger he once more starts chasing Tweety around the alleys. “Hooligan’s Island” Sylvester and Tweety have grabbed some snack food to sit an watch their favorite TV Show but the picture is bad, so Sylvester and climbs to the roof and tries to move the antenna around but things go wrong when it gets hooked in a helicopter and carries the frightened feline away. “Magic Madness” Sylvester is reading a book about witchcraft and learns that cats are the favorite pets for witches and he thinks that he has magic powers and when trying to use them things around start to move around! In the end Tweety figures out that the construction next door is what is causing the items to move and Sylvester still believes he has powers and walks around like a goof trying to use them. “It’s Okay, Chief” tiny aliens come to Earth and meet Tweety and Sylvester and by mistake both of our stars get stuck in the UFO and fly around town! And in the end the Aliens think that Earth and its people are silly and head back home.

Holy Cow we have seven stories in this issue and shocking all of them are really fun and many of them are all about the chase between Sylvester and Tweety and then a few others have them being friends and going on adventures together! And lets us also not forget to mention that this issue also has a few Horror and Sci-Fi elements as they add one story that is about witchcraft and another that is about aliens and UFO’s and this is what also made this issue very cool for me! And of course Granny and Butch The Bulldog show up and add to the humor and each have their moments to shine. When it comes to the best story in this issue it was really hard to pick as I liked several of them lots but I think I would choose Quarantined as my favorite as you can not go wrong with the classic pepper causing people to sneeze bit, plus I like the fact it was a war game with that pepper as using it at the right time is what made this story move and bring the chuckles. Almost taking the best was Magic Madness as it was so cool to see Sylvester thinking he was a witch and had magical powers, it was fitting to have a dash of Horror in kids comics at this time. And if I was forced to pick the weakest I would say Hooligan’s Island as while it was fun and silly it was very short and the payout was cheesy. The cover for this issue is bright and eye catching and classic comedy stuff and I know you are sick of hearing this but Unknown Artist did a great job on the issues interior art. So with that ,let’s head to the next issue and see what is in store for us.

Tweety and Sylvester Comic 119

Tweety & Sylvester # 119  **1/2
Released in 1984      Cover Price .60    Whitman    # 119 of 121

“The Cat On The Flying Trapeze” Jenny Lush is a canary who works for the circus and Sylvester decides that he wants to eat her for dinner and tracks her down to a hotel and ends up getting beat up by her Hawk bodyguard. Meanwhile Tweety has fallen in love with Jenny and the two have dinner, and while having dinner Sylvester tries to attack the two but falls out of the window and is sent to the hospital as Tweety and Jenny end up having a relationship. “Canary Clean-Up” an alley in town is messy and Tweety and the Canary Scouts decide to clean it up and when Weezy and the other alley cats show up they find their home clean and all their trash food gone. They find Tweety’s scout cap and head to threaten Sylvester that he better have Tweety mess the alley back up or they will mess him up! Sylvester does not know what to do as Granny is happy with the alley being clean but he don’t want to be beat up by his fellow felines. Tweety heads back to the alley for his hat and meets the alley cats and shows them that they moved their old cans to a better location and all is well between them…well besides Sylvester who gives chase to Tweety once he figured out that he made him stress for no reason. “One Night Stand” Sylvester is trying to join a feline singing group and his voice is bad, and this causes him to not get the gig but as one of the cats goes to his house to tell him he stinks, Tweety is listening to an album and the cat thinks that the singing is Sylvester and he is hired in the group. But when they play their first gig Sylvester sings and they are booed off stage and he is quickly fired. “Final Fate” Sylvester finally captured Tweety and is heating up the oven and getting all his spices ready, and while this is happening Tweety reminds him they are friends and all the bad things that will happen if he eats him, and this gives Tweety enough time to escape and for Sylvester to fall out a window and wind up in the hospital.

Okay, first thing I need to say is this issue also has three shorter stories just called “Sylvster and Tweety” that are clearly reprints from another Looney Tunes comic book, one of these has Sylvester and Tweety on a farm and it’s a funny read. But it is clear by this point that this comic series was running a little low on stream as each stories are a little shorter and seem to rush to a ending with many at this point ending with Sylvester getting hurt and winding up in the hospital or wrapped in bandages. Also with them reprinting old strips shows that they were just trying to fill the pages. But with that said this issue still is really good and almost all of the stories bring a few chuckles and laughs as we go along with Sylvester as he tries to become a singer as well as try and kill a celebrity bird! While we also see that Tweety is super smart as well as supportive and a friend to Sylvester no matter how many times the feline tries to eat him. The best story in this issue for me was One Night Stand as watching Sylvester sing terrible and yet do to a miss understanding somehow able to join a singing group and in one night with less than one song gets them booed out of a feline night club is funny and epic. I would say the weakest would just be the reprinted stories as they are fun just a letdown that they took this route. The cover is cool and has Sylvester and Tweety listen to records and the interior art by Unknown Artist is great like before. Over all another fun issue that did its job of entertaining me, but up next is the final issue I have ready for this update.

Tweety and Sylvester Comic 120

Tweety & Sylvester # 120
Released in 1984      Cover Price .60    Whitman     # 120 of 121

“The Jolly Joker” Sylvester has sent away for a Genie in a bottle in order to help him capture Tweety, but he soon learns that the Genie is a prankster and uses his magic to help but in weird ways that always ends with him getting joy out of the anger and chaos it is causing. Finally Sylvester and Tweety team up and trick the Genie back in his bottle to end his silly ways as they send him back. “Cat With A Hat” Sylvester is watching a magic show and returns home wanting to learn magic, and by mistake Tweety takes a nap in a box and Sylvester thinks his magic made him appear! But after a few tries Tweet ends up trying to help Sylvester with his magic but his help causes him to get be up by a bunny thats kids wind up in his hat. And Sylvester mad after getting beat up chases Tweety through the woods who ends up finding a bulldog to protect him. “School Daze” Sylvester decides to go to school in order to learn and use what he does learn in ways to capture Tweety, but of course Tweety comes to the school and causes trouble and Sylvester is blamed for it and ends up by the end being apart of the football team as he is a kicker and the team paints pictures of Tweety on the ball! “ Borrowed Trouble” Sylvester has lost his money purse and is now in need of cash and tries to borrow some money from Tweety who in turn plays up that he has lots of money and makes Sylvester get him food, draw a bath and even fight off another cat! In the end the money he gives Sylvester is his own as Tweety found his money purse and this causes Sylvester to be mad and chase him around! “Birdwatcher” Granny has Sylvester watch after Tweety while she is gone for the morning and Tweety acts as if he is sleepwalking in order to get outside and see his bird friends, and when Tweety gets away Sylvester buys a new cage and captures him at the pet store, but because he bought the cage he gets a free gift that is another canary and the two are now driving the feline crazy.

This is the final issue I currently own of Tweety And Sylvester and this issue is also the one before the series would come to an end at Whitman Comics and I have to say this issue was lots of fun and it seemed like the creative minds behind the series knew that it was coming to an end and tried to deliver a very fun and entertaining issues for the readers. And that is one thing I have to say that Tweety and Sylvester as well as all the other Looney Tune comics that was released by Whitman and Gold Key Comics were very well done kids comics as they did the characters justice and kept them close to the cartoons but also did a great job of building a comic book world around them. Sylvester throughout this series really is the star as we follow him through many adventures as well as his weird friendship with Tweety as well as the alley cats that live around his home. Tweety in this series loves to push the buttons of Sylvester but also very much looks at him as a friend as he does what he can most of the time to help him out of trouble as well as point out that they are friends. And their friendship that is on and off again is what makes this comic work as it brings lots of the humorous situations throughout the series. This issue featured five stories with all of them being really fun and for me the best being The Jolly Joker as I like that both Sylvester and Tweety get sick of the Genie and his pranking ways and team up to get him back in the bottle and sent back via the mail were he came from. But I also really liked School Daze as Sylvester going back to school and joining the football team reminded me of the Adam Sandler films “Billy Madison” and “The Waterboy”. I would say that Birdwatcher was the weakest story as while it had some great cartoonish moments I feel the payout of the new canary joining the house was just kind of meh. The cover for this issue is fun as it has Tweety and Sylvester playing with a train set, and the blue background makes it very eye catching. The interior artwork was done by the Unknown Artist as was the whole series and I like the different styles used throughout while some times I was not a fan of how the artist drew Sylvester as some would make him look super chubby I have to say over all I really dug the art in the series. So as you can see, Whitman comics back in the 70’s and 80’s really did bring great comics to the hands of Looney Tune fans and delivered some very fun and silly reads. Check out the artwork below to see some of the styles used by the Unknown Artists.

The Tweety and Sylvester comic series by Whitman and Gold Key Comics is lots of fun and reading these made me feel like a kid again as my brother and I use to read these all the time growing up, and these comics are truly great Kid Comics that are based on cartoons of the time. And thank you for spending a little part of your Thanksgiving with me here at Rotten Ink as doing these updates I hope make your holiday just a little more fun. And before we end this I also really want to say if you like Sylvester and Tweety track down a few of these issues and give them a read. Horror Host Icon: Dr. Shock (PA)

Happy Halloween and welcome back to Rotten Ink. When thinking about horror hosts, a state that I feel at times does not get the recognition for having some amazing ones is Pennsylvania, and for me, one of the tops from that state is Dr. Shock who is the topic for his “Horror Host Icon” update. Like so many, this one is long over due as I have been wanting to cover him for awhile and went on a hunt to track down episodes to make this update possible, but while I could not find any, I did find a tribute show that is just perfect to showcase his style as well as is a heartwarming tribute to him done by the station that aired his show as well as his friends and fans. So if you are ready, grab a big bowl of popcorn and turn down the lights as it’s time to have a blood chilled and our funny bone tickled thanks to Dr. Shock and his Mad Theater!

Dr Shock PA 1

Dr. Shock was the host of Mad Theater (along with all of its name changes) and was a fun natured ghoul who took his style from Horror Host Zacherley and even slightly looked like him. He entertained viewers on Channel 17 with his goofy jokes and magical tricks. Dr. Shock had grey skin, wore a black suit, and while friendly, he did have a slight mean streak as he would love to hit crew members with a plastic hammer when they would get on his nerves. He would also take time to give bad medical advice to those who would wander on his set and really loved hosting the films that he presented. The fact that he had that jolly ghoul appeal made his viewers bond with him quickly as he was that late night horror film watching friend who brought laughs to the horrors on the screen. Dr. Shock is truly one of those iconic horror hosts who did it right as he really did make viewers feel like he was their friend and entertained his viewers for almost a full decade, and for that he truly was one of Pennsylvania’s best horror hosts of all time. When Dr. Shock make public appearances, fans would flock to meet him as he would be one of the area’s most loved stars. All the way to his sudden passing, his show was must-watch TV and his passing is still felt to this day. I should also note that Dr. Shock’s sidekick was Bubbles, his young daughter that viewers watched grow up on the show, and she became a big part of the show’s history.

Dr Shock PA 2Dr Shock PA 3Dr Shock PA 4

The original show that was hosted by Dr. Shock was “Creatures Features” in 1970, and after a very short time, the show had a name change to “Scream-In.” Oddly Channel 17 decided to fire Dr. Shock after only 13 episodes, and after getting several very angry letters and calls, they brought him back to air and the fans were happy! But when he was brought back, his original sidekick Igor was not. So Dr. Shock brought on Bubbles, a young girl who over the years grew up in front of viewers’ eyes. The show would go from showing a single film to a double film in late 1970. Scream-In would become “Mad Theater/Horror Theater” in 1972 and would be on air until 1979, before the untimely death of Dr. Shock. The viewers of Dr. Shocks shows enjoyed his cheesy comedy, magic as well as all the zany characters he would play like Wild-Man Of Pango Pango, Samurai Swordsman, Henny Himself, Food Man, Freaky Fairy and Great Grandma Shock to name a few. The show really meant something to Philadelphia fans and was well loved by all his fans and viewers who made his shows must views for the week. Despite the name changes and even the channel firing the host for a brief time, Mad Theater would be a staple or Channel 17 for over 9 years. Sadly while footage can be found on YouTube as well as trade lists, no known full episodes have been found, due to home media recorders being very rare in the 1970’s.

Joseph Zawislak was born September 14, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and from a very early age he had the creative and entertainment bug as he learned the accordion as a youngster as well as did impersonations of famous people to make family and friends laugh. When old enough he joined the Navy and was in from 1955-1957. It was after this that his love for magic was born and after becoming a master magician, he would perform going under the names Dr. Alky and The Fabulous Mister Joseph and his assistant Sylvia DeNardo would later become his wife by 1958. During this time Joseph would also own a steak shop, run a pinball arcade and even become an insurance salesman. He would also have five kids with his wife and would dress up as Horror Host Zacherley at family get togethers to make people have a good laugh. But his life changed in 1970 when at a barbershop he overheard a head of WPHL-TV Channel 17 talking about them not being able to find a host for their upcoming Horror Movie show, and Joseph went up to the man and did went into his Zacherley act and was hired on the spot! Joseph would become a local celebrity from the moment his first show aired and would remain one his whole career. But sadly his time on this Earth was cut short as at the age of 42 on September, 28 1979 he would pass away from a heart attack. While gone, his horror host legacy and memory lives on with his family, friends and fans.

Dr Shock PA 8Dr Shock PA 9Dr Shock PA 10

On March 22, 2014 at HorrorHound Weekend, Dr. Shock was inducted into the Horror Host Hall Of Fame as one of the hosts of the Class Of 2014 and was inducted by Nibbles The Clown and Punkin of Freakhouse Flicks who did a fantastic job paying him respect and honor. The fans who attended as well as fellow Horror Hosts clapped as he took his place among the best the art of Horror Hosting has to offer. Also names in the 2014 Class were Crypt Keeper, The Ghoul, Grampa Munster, Mad Daddy and Penny Dreadful to name a few. And with Dr. Shock making it in, I am sure this was something that his family, friends and fans are really proud of and happy to see that his legacy still lives on.

Dr Shock PA 11Dr Shock PA 12Dr Shock PA 13

Dr. Shock is a true icon and legend in the world of Horror Hosting and while he asked and got permission to use elements and even the style that Zacherley used, I feel that Dr. Shock took them and added so much more to the character and made them his own. One of the coolest aspects of Dr. Shock was his use of magic during his segments as at the time it was really something special that set him apart from all other hosts going in and around the Pennsylvania area at the time. Plus I feel that his jolly nature and the silly elements of his show are what really made him must watch for viewers who liked their horror host dashed with humor. I respect Dr. Shock so much that I almost was going to make a 17hr round trip drive just to visit his grave and pay my respect to him! I also spent lots of time searching the Grey Market as well as horror host tape trade lists trying to find any episodes of Dr. Shock and came up empty handed. When you talk to those who grew up in Philadelphia and the surrounding area that were able to view Dr. Shock, they all say how he was a big part of their lives and childhood, showing just how much he meant to the culture of that city and the state of Pennsylvania in general. For me Dr. Shock is a great horror host who is a Hall Of Fame member and shows just how great the horror hosts of Pennsylvania can be.

Dr Shock PA 14Dr Shock PA 15Dr Shock PA 16

So as you can see, Dr. Shock is one of those hosts that will always be remembered in his home state of Pennsylvania and beyond and with being inducted into The Horror Host Hall Of Fame, his legacy truly will never be forgotten. Now sadly, like many older hosts at this point, his shows are lost to time and for this update we will be taking a look at a tribute show that aired after his passing that was filled with many amazing clips from the show. And like before, I will be taking the show’s write up from our friends at IMDB and I will be writing about the host’s antics the best I can. So if you are ready, let’s take a spooky laugh filled trip with the one and only Dr. Shock.

Dr. Shock is a true Icon in horror hosting and is one of Pennsylvania’s top hosts as to this day his fans talk about the joys of watching his show. He really is a truly awesome host, and I hope someday that I will be able to track down a few full episodes so I can experience this host like his fans did back during his original run on television. I hope that this update brought back some great memories for those of you reading this that grew up watching Dr. Shock. And to all you readers, I hope this added to your Halloween holiday and made it a little spookier as well as humorous. Horror Host Icon: Zombo

For many Monster Kids something that was near and dear to them was getting home in time to catch their local Horror Host on TV, and better yet when that Host seemed like their friend who made them laugh to ease the scares of the film of the night. And for me watching the likes of The Creeper of Moraine Playhouse Theater or Dr. Creep of New Shock Theater (and so many more) while a thunderstorm raged outside are some of my favorite memories of watching TV when I was a kid. And for little Eddie Munster, that strange kid who lives in that rundown house on Mockingbird Lane, his favorite Horror Host was Zombo who hosted the show House Of Zombo! For this Horror Host Icon update, we will be taking a look at Zombo and have a quick look at this Horror Host that was part of the sitcom The Munsters from the 1960’s and who helped inspire a generation of Horror Hosts in just one TV appearance! So sit back and be ready to be chilled to the bone as we enter the House Of Zombo!

House Of Zombo 1House Of Zombo 2House Of Zombo 3

Zombo is the host of House Of Zombo that aired in the late afternoon, and he was a host who was filled with wise cracks, had a sinister look and hosted from his creepy home. Zombo is a pale faced warlock with massive hands and thick fingernails. He has dark circles around his eyes, a long nose with a wart, long white hair and teeth almost like a vampire. He also has a very iconic sounding laugh as well dresses like a vampire sometimes and other times like a demented wizard. His catch phrase is “You Kill Me”, and this phrase has been quoted by his fans for decades now and is also always on his autographs. Zombo connected with his viewers and made them not only laugh but also makes them feel like they are his friends. A truly talented and funny Horror Host who is Eddie Munster’s favorite Host and even his role model. Actor Louis Nye was Zombo and was a well loved comedic actor who had a very long career in film and TV and who is known for roles on such TV Shows as The Beverly Hillbillies, Needles An Pins, The Love Boat, Curb Your Enthusiasm and did voice work for cartoons like Inspector Gadget, Foofur and The Real Ghostbusters. Sadly Louis Nye would pass away at the age of 92 due to lung cancer in 2005. And in 2022, an uncredited actor played Zombo for the made for streaming film The Munsters that was directed by Rob Zombie.

House Of Zombo 4House Of Zombo 5House Of Zombo 6

Growing up, I was always a fan of The Munsters and can remember watching classic episodes on reruns on TBS as well as watching Grampa Munster host Super Scary Saturday who had Grampa hosting Horror and Sci-Fi films, as both where must see TV for me. And I mean let’s be honest, most Monster Kids had a crush of Lily Munster! So as you can see, this show and its characters have always been a big part of my life growing up and one of my favorite episodes of all time is “Zombo” as I have always been a fan of Horror Hosts and could understand why Eddie had a fondness for Zombo as growing up for me Commander USA was one of my favorite people on the planet and his show was something I had to watch. And I think what is really cool for Zombo is that he only made one appearance and only had a few moments on screen, but he made such a big impact and has truly inspired many to pursue becoming a Horror Host and that truly make him an Icon in my book. And let us not forget also that the character has inspired artwork as well as other Horror media showing just how impactful he was, and for some I am sure he also acted as a gateway to introduce some folks to Horror Hosting much like Count Floyd and Alister Cookie have as well. Say what you will about Zombo, but to me he really has made a big impact to the art of Horror Hosting.

House Of Zombo 7House Of Zombo 8House Of Zombo 9

So now we are at the point of this Horror Host Icon update that we take a look at the episodes I own and with Zombo we will be taking a look at the episode of The Munsters he appeared in. I will be taking the episode’s plot from our friends at IMDB, and I will be then writing about the antics of Zombo from the episode. And like always, I will not be rating or grading the show as these updates are not to review as much as they are to respect the history of the hosts and their episodes. So with that, the doors of the House of Zombo are open and that’s our invite to come in and see what he is all about.

House Of Zombo DVD

The House Of Zombo!
Starring – Fred Gwynne & Yvonne De Carlo     Not Rated     1966

Host: We open with an old abandoned house, the place that Zombo lives who welcomes us to the show and makes a few pun filled jokes, and then tells the viewers that today they will be picking the winner of the “I Like Zombo Because” contest! He then howls and reads another chapter from the book “Mark Of The Werewolf” and then a little later talks about Crumble Creature Crackers and how you smash them to eat them and then drown the pieces in milk! After that he announces the winner of the contest that is a young lad by the name of Eddie Munster. We then join Zombo later behind the scenes and he is out of costume as he meets Eddie and his mother Lily, and they watch as he gets made up in his makeup and costume, and sadly Eddie is very disappointed by this as he thought Zombo was real. Later on the House Of Zombo show, he sits with Eddie and introduces him to the viewers, but Eddie snaps and grabs and removes Zombo’s wig and fake nose showing the viewers at home that Zombo is just an actor and not a real ghoul and as Zombo tries to hid his real appearance Eddie runs wild on the set and the show ends due to technical difficulties. Back behind the scenes, the producers say that the Zombo show is done for good due to this, and Zombo thanks Eddie for his help as he wanted out of the show for months and tells Eddie to grow up to be like his Dad and not Zombo.

Movie: Eddie is under the spell of Zombo, the host of a television horror show, who he considers to be a hero. Herman feels neglected by Eddie who hasn’t got time for his dad anymore and is jealous of Zombo. When Eddie has won a contest and gets to go to the studio and meet Zombo in person, Herman tries to become just like Zombo so Eddie will consider his dad a hero again.

House Of Zombo 10

Zombo is a “Host” that really did leave his mark on the world of Horror Hosting as I have spoken to many hosts who have said he was a big influence on them and help inspire their characters and desire to became a host, so to me that is very impactful and I truly see him as a fully fledged Horror Host as his show inside The Munsters sitcom world has become one of the most iconic episodes in the series’ history. And with the 2022 Rob Zombie film reintroducing Zombo to modern viewers, let’s hope he inspires a new generation of Horror Hosts like the original’s appearance did all those decades back. And again I want to stress in the world of Horror Hosting there are all types of Hosts, and Zambo is one that in one appearance on a sitcom has become a truly iconic Horror Hosts. So with that our next update will take us out of the world of Horror Hosting and will take us to the baseball diamond, as we will find ourselves at the Rotten Ink Stadium to take a look at the rest of the Cincinnati Reds Mascots! So until next time, read a Horror Comic or three, watch a Horror Film or two and as always support your local Horror Hosts! And I hope you are ready to chat about Schottzie # 1 and 2!

Horror Host Icon: The Night Watchman (WGN)

Welcome back to Rotten Ink! I am wondering how many of your readers out there remember Movie Underground, a hosted movie show that featured The Night Watchman bringing viewers some of the best films he could find in the film vaults he was hired to protect? This short-lived Host and his show are the topic for this Horror Host Icon update as I feel that all hosts should be remembered! Plus this show was on a big station out of Chicago, Illinois and had a pretty loyal and large following as Illinois is also another state that has a rich history of late night Horror Hosts. But we are not here to talk about the others as we are here to celebrate the career of The Night Watchman and go on his rounds as he protects the film vault and shares a movie with us.

WGN Movie Underground 1

The Night Watchman is the host of Movie Underground and is the night guard at the Fortress Of Television and is also very much into movies and wants to delver the best he can offer to the viewers. He is a super goofy and is a fun loving, jokey kind of guy who looks like actor and comedian Drew Carey in a guard outfit. He also seems to love to chat about the night’s film given facts as well as joking about parts of the film and sometimes playing off what characters say. His jokes are silly and have a “Dad” quality to them and that is part of his charm that built up his connection with the viewers as he seems like he is watching the film along with you, and most of the time he has his trusty popcorn ready for a snack while he watches. He is good friends with his co-worker and co-host The Nightie Watchman and loves joking with her about the night’s film. While he is not the zaniest nor flashiest of Hosts he is a good one who entertained his viewers with his antics and jokes show after show. Marc Chase was the actor who played The Night Watchman who had a background in Radio and worked for Tribune Media.

WGN Movie Underground 2WGN Movie Underground 3WGN Movie Underground 4

WGN Movie Underground was a weekly show that would air on WGN America on Friday Nights at 8pm and would have host The Night Watchman and his co-host Nightie Watchman hosting a single movie and they would fill the time with facts, trivia and jokes. The set was an area outside the vault that had a big comfy chairs, table with a bucket of popcorn, a lava lamp and movie posters hanging on the walls behind them. The show had a good fan following and the hosts were well liked by viewers who also would participate in the Swap Shop segments of the show that would have viewers try and trade for an item that the hosts had up for grabs most of the time props from the show. Movie Underground would start in 2008 and sadly by 2010 it was off the air as WGN decided to renew it for another season. Most of the shows segments was written by Michael Walter and they were produced and directed by Paul Crossey. While the show was short lived it was well loved by its viewers and still has a cult following on tape trade lists to this day.

The Nightie Watchman is the beautiful co-host of Movie Underground and she as well wears her guard outfit and loves to chat about the movie that they host, and by all accounts she as well is the more knowledgeable about the movies and is the better at hosting between the two when it comes to that. Her name is Henrietta or Henrie but she goes by Nightie Watchman and she was one of the most popular parts of the show, not just cause her stunning good looks but because of her personality and fun nature. The shows official website use to even have a Nightie Watchman photo gallery for fans to bask in her beauty. Nightie Watchman was played by model April Rose Maydock who was also an actress as well as a MAXIM Magazine lady. She is a great co-host who at times really did outshine the shows main.

WGN was a station that I can remember watching when I was a kid as it was a station we could pick up from time to time and they would always be airing weird movies and shows in reruns. I am not sure when this happened but at some point our Ohio cable provider dropped WGN from the lineup so in 2008 when Movie Underground was airing I had no clue about it as I would have watched the show and would have really enjoyed it as it has a great vibe and a host who was silly and goofy and added his own touch on the art of hosting, plus lets be honest Nightie Watchman was very eye catching with her beauty. Plus I must say that it’s great when a host and a co-host have great chemistry on the screen and I feel that these two have that magic. I wish that more major broadcast stations would do this type of show and that is why we fans of Horror Hosting should be grateful for METV for airing Svengoolie!

The Night Watchman and Nightie Watchman are a great team when it comes to being Movie Hosts who could also be called Horror Hosts as they have hosted their fair share of Horror, Comedies and Sci-Fi films over their run. And I would like to thank Horror Host Dr. Pureblood for getting me episodes of this show and making this update possible as well as B-Videos 101, I also want to thank our friends at IMDB for the movies write ups. So if you are ready it looks like The Night Watchman is about to start his patrol and that’s our cue to tag along for the zany ride. Oh and before we start our movie watching and protecting patrol I want to also remind you that I do not rate or grade the episodes and I do write about the zany antics of the host. So lets get patrolling.

WGN Movie Underground 14

WGN Movie Underground and it’s hosts Night Watchman and Nightie are really solid and made their mark on Horror Hosting and is a show that I feel still could be on TV today and WGN should bring them back as these types of movie hosting shows are lacking on broadcast TV. And I truly do thank that Night Watchman and Nightie made a great duo and did a fantastic job of not only entertaining the viewers but also educating them on the films. But our time with The Night Watchman has came to an end as his shift is over, but before we end this Icon update I would like to tell you that our next update will be the July 4th update and will feature a comic book American Hero as it will be about the youngest elected President in America Prez! So until next time read a comic or three, watch a movie or two and as always support your local Horror Host. See you next update for a firework in the sky good time.

The Mighty Gigantic Grape Ape!

Hanna-Barbera cartoons were very big in my youth as I grew up in the 1980’s and 1990’s, and they seemed to be on every Saturday and Sunday mornings, with me watching many of them when they first aired and others via reruns on USA Network’s show The Cartoon Express. And while you longtime readers know that Yogi Bear is my favorite Hanna-Barbera character, another one that is at the top of my list is Grape Ape as his cartoon was so silly and entertaining that he became a must see toon for me. And over the years I feel that I have not covered enough of the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons that shaped my childhood as up to this point we have only covered FooFur, Inch High Private Eye, GoBots and Yogi Bear and now Grape Ape will be joining their ranks. So if you are ready to go on an adventure with a massive purple ape who is called Grape Ape, let’s get this update started!

Grape Ape 1

The Grape Ape Show was a cartoon that was created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera to release via their Hanna-Barbera Productions for ABC to air for their Saturday Morning Cartoons lineup. The show would start airing on September 6, 1975 and would end on December 13, 1975, lasting for one season and a total of 16 episodes. Even though it would only run for a very short time, the cartoon would remain airing in reruns until 1978 and was very popular with the kids. The show would then end up in airing on the USA Network as part of their Cartoon Express and would find even more fans and viewers and would make Grape Ape an even bigger star in the world of cartoons. Oddly enough over the years the show has not gotten the complete series released on VHS, DVD nor Blu-Ray even though it remains a highly requested series for Warner Brothers to release. But for some reason you can get the series only digitally via Amazon. I know for many of you readers it is shocking to thank that only 16 episodes were made for Grape Ape as when I was a kid it seemed like he was always on via reruns.

Grape Ape 2Grape Ape 3Grape Ape 4

Grape Ape is a 40 Foot Tall purple-furred ape that is very childlike who wears a green jacket, black bowtie and green hat that has only two things he can say and that’s “Grape Ape, Grape Ape” and “Beegly Beagly”. He has a very big sweet tooth and likes to eat ice cream and due to his size, he is very misunderstood by those who come across him as to them they see a giant monster but really his is sweet and super friendly. Because of his size he can also move cars like toy cars and can easily save the day as he is always looking to do the right thing. Besides The Great Grape Ape Show, he has also appeared in such cartoons as “Laff-A-Lympics” as part of Scooby-Doo’s team and over the years also has made a cameos of some sort on shows like Dexter’s Lab, Harvey Birdman Attorney At Law and Robot Chicken. Voice actor Bob Holt was behind Grape Ape in his original run who was a well-known cartoon voice actor in his time.

Grape Ape 5Grape Ape 6Grape Ape 7

Beegle Beagle is a talking dog that is the best friend of Grape Ape and is the one that drives him around, gets him into all types of adventures as well as is the one who takes him out for ice cream! Beegle was a fan of the color red as he would wear that color for his hat as well as vest and would also rock a very cool bone bowtie. And it is clear that while Beegle does some silly things and wants to make money off his giant friend from time to time, but it is also very clear that he cares and will watch out for Grape Ape. Beegle can also drive a car and he is how the two get around as Grape Ape sits atop the vehicle. Marty Ingels is the voice behind Beegle Beagle and he was a very popular voice actor for the time as he also voiced such characters as Pac-Man and The Devil for Darkwing Duck. Beegle Beagle is the perfect style cartoon straight man to the childlike antics of Grape Ape.

Grape Ape 8Grape Ape 9Grape Ape 10

Over the years, Grape Ape has had some very cool merchandise based around him and many of his fans truly enjoy getting these collectables for their collections. Like if you are a fan you can get Grape Ape toys, dolls, shirts, posters, board game, air freshener, coloring books, buttons, comics and stickers to name a few. And growing up I can remember having a Grape Ape coloring book and over the years got the comics. And for many collectors, they really enjoy the Funko Pop release of Grape Ape. But as you can see lots of cool stuff to collect and shows just how big Hanna-Barbera use to be.

Grape Ape 11Grape Ape 12Grape Ape 13

So as you can see, Grape Ape was a very cool classic cartoon series that was very popular with the kids at the time and was a cartoon that my brother and I always had to watch when on as how can you not like a giant ape and his wise talking dog friend. I would like to first say thanks to Hanna-Barbera Productions for making so many amazing cartoons that shaped so many kids’ childhoods. I would also like to thank the Etsy Seller who had both of these issues in stock and made this update possible, as these comics are a little rare and hard to find. I would like to also remind you all that I grade these comics on a star scale of 1 to 4 and am looking for how well the comics stay to the source material, its entertainment value and its art and story. So let’s see what Grape Ape has in store for us in the world of kid comic books.

Grape Ape Comic 1

The Great Grape Ape # 1  **1/2
Released in 1976      Cover Price .30     Charlton Comics     # 1 of 2

“The Great Grape Ape Escape” in their trusty van Grape Ape and Beegle Beagle are following a car full of mobster bank robbers and watch as they pull over and run into the bank to steal the money. Grape Ape ends up putting their get away car on top of a building, but this does not stop them as they end up taking Beegle Beagle hostage and make him drive them to the airport so that they can make a clean get away. But while in the air Grape Ape grabs the plane from the sky and delivers the mobsters to the cops and saves the life of Beegle Beagle. “The Great Grape Ape Sees A Ghost” while driving around and using their last bit of money to wash the van Beegle Beagle and Grape Ape run out of gas and decided to take a challenge to stay a night in a haunted house to win $100.00! And Beegle Beagle gets inside and is scared of the ghosts that haunt it, but once Grape Ape removes the roof to join his friend the Ghost flee in fear and while they win the prize money the end up owing it back due to the damage caused by Grape Ape entering it! “Bring Em Back Alive Clive” while driving down the highway Grape Ape by accident knocks himself out by running into an overpass and he ends up on the highway, but his troubles soon become worse when Clive, a conman who runs a circus, nabs the knocked out ape with a crane and takes him prisoner, but soon when Grape Ape wakes up he wonders around causing damage and Clive ends up climbing into a giant robot version of himself, only for it to crumble after one punch from Grape Ape! In the end Grape Ape and Beegle Beagle leave the circus and Clive is happy to see his prisoner leave!

The first issue of Grape Ape features three short stories with each of them showcasing Grape Ape and Beegle Beagle in all sorts of strange adventures from being in a haunted house to stopping back robbers and even escaping a circus and all the while the lovable giant ape has a smile on his face and a playfulness in his heart. Grape Ape is very kind and childlike in the issue as he has no fear of ghosts and does not even seem to understand that he has been Ape-napped by a conman! But because he has no fear this does allow him to scare some ghosts as well as annoy and bring down some mobsters who were very mean spirited in nature. Beegle Beagle does what he does best and that is watch over his giant friend as well as drive them around from place to place. But sadly due to his size and the fact he is a dog, he does seem to get treated poorly by the crappy people they come across on their adventures. The plots for these three stories are very simple and have a quick pace and some truly silly and fun moments, but because they are so basic they do lose a little charm as I feel that at least with this first issue they lack the true kids comic silliness of say the Whitman Looney Tune Comics. But with that said, I do feel that the comic series also did a good job of capturing the charm of the cartoon it’s based on…so I would have to say that over all it really is a entertaining comic for fans of Grape Ape. My favorite story of course is The Great Grape Ape Sees A Ghost as you can never go wrong with a spooky tale of a haunted house and ghosts. The cover is fantastic and showcases both Grape Ape and Beegle Beagle enjoying some ice cream while the interior art is really well done and truly looks like the cartoon versions, but sadly I could not find who the artist was so this is another for Unknown Artist to claim as his own. I have to say this is a really good comic if you enjoy classic Hanna-Barbara Cartoons.

Grape Ape Comic 2

The Great Grape Ape # 2  **1/2
Released in 1976      Cover Price .30     Charlton Comics     # 2 of 2

“Timberrrr!” while driving through the woods Grape Ape and Beegle Beagle come across a fallen tree and find that the giant Paul Bunyan and his ox Blue are the ones doing it as they are stealing all the lumber for themselves and chasing off all the other lumberjacks! Grape Ape ends up standing his ground against the giant lumberjack and finds out that both Paul and Ox are robots being controlled by a rich man who truly wanted all the lumber for himself. Grape Ape destroys the robots and saves the day and even gets a job offer before he and Beegle Beagle ride off into the woods. “The Great Grape Ape vs. Snap Dragon” while driving through California Grape Ape and Beegle Beagle come across a town that is being tormented by a power shovel that has gone rogue and is destroying the town and drinking up all the gas and oil as it now spits fire! But Grape Ape has seen enough and decides to help the town and does so by punching and breaking the power shovel ending its reign of terror, and with that the town’s people are thankful and Beegle Beagle and Grape Ape continue their quest. “Frisbee Fun” while driving around Beegle Beagle and Grape Ape watch some kids play with Frisbees and this makes Grape Ape sad as they are too small for him to use, but just then UFOs from Mars try and invade and Grape Ape grabs one and flings it back into space causing them all to flee and stop the invasion! Grape Ape is a hero but all he really wants is a Frisbee his size to play with.

The final issue in the very short lived Grape Ape comic series is a pretty entertaining one as we once more join him and Beegle Beagle in three adventures that this time have them fighting robots as well as stopping an alien invasion and of course all the while Grape Ape is a hero that is doing what he thinks is right and that is stopping the baddies. Grape Ape in this one seems to be ready for a fight as he beats the heck out of robot versions of Paul Bunyan and Blue as well as a fire breaking Power Shovel with his big bare fists and even tosses a UFO away with ease and has fun doing it! The one think that I do have to point out that the comic gets wrong is they have Grape Ape say more words than he should and that kind of makes its feel slightly off. In other words Charlton Comics needed to have Grape Ape not say as much as he does through both these issues. Beegle Beagle in this one seems more like a background player as he is featured in all three stories it’s clear that Grape Ape is the true star and is the one who gets almost all the panel time. I have to say also that Snap Dragon the Power Shovel gone crazy truly reminded me of the made for TV film “Killdozer” mixed with Godzilla and a Dragon…and I for some reason really enjoyed that showdown the best as I think it is my favorite story in the issue. Plus you have to once more enjoy the fact that this issue brings the Horror and Sci-Fi elements into the stories. I have to say that while it does have a very small amount of flaws that makes the comic feel slightly different from the cartoon I do think that if you are a fan of Grape Ape, you will really like these comics. The cover for this second and final issue is great and has Grape Ape squaring up against Snap Dragon and is super eye catching, and Unknown Artist once more did a great job of brining top notch interior artwork that does look like the toon its based on. If you really do enjoy Grape Ape or just Hanna-Barbara cartoons, make sure to checkout this series. Take a look at the artwork below to see the style used in this comic series.

Grape Ape Comic Art 1Grape Ape Comic Art 2Grape Ape Comic Art 3

As you can see, Grape Ape not only was a great cartoon but also a very fun comic book series as Charlton Comics proved that they knew how to make kids comic based on popular toons at the time and you can never go wrong with their series based on Hanna-Barbara Cartoons! And really this update was a blast to work on as it made me not only feel like a kid again but also brought back my love for the character Grape Ape that I feel is very much overlooked in this modern time…I say give me Grape Ape over 99.9% off all the modern cartoons flooding the airwaves now. Anyways I now just sound like an old man yelling at the clouds so with that I think our time with Grape Ape and Beegle Beagle has come to an end and our next update will take us to the Ultraverse as we take a look at Sludge the monster hero of Malibu Comics! So until next time, read a comic of three, watch a cartoon or two and as always support your local Horror Host. See you next update for a muck monster of a gooey good time.

Tube Toons: Captain America (1966)

Welcome back to another Tube Toons update here at Rotten Ink, the themed updates where we take a look at the complete run of a classic cartoon series. For this one we are continuing our look at the 1966 Marvel Super-Heroes series and will be looking at the cartoons of Captain America! It’s a shame that today’s youth does not get to experience the joy that was Saturday Morning Cartoons. The morning was filled with so many great cartoons. They would be based on the toys or comics that were on the shelves at your local stores, and the commercials played was for toys, cereals, fast food, video games, candy, junk food and movie releases all things that us kids thought we needed. In modern times kids get their cartoons from stations like Nickelodeon, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network and many watch the streaming services that have cartoon on tap making Saturday Mornings lame on stations like ABC, NBC and FOX. But here at Rotten Ink Saturday Morning Cartoons will live on with these Tube Toon updates, and with that, let’s see what Captain America and his mighty shield has in store for us!

Marvel Superheroes Tube Toons Vol 2 Logo Cap copy 2

The Marvel Super-Heroes was a cartoon series produced by Grantray-Lawrence Animation that started to air in 1966 and featured such Marvel Comics Superheroes as Iron Man, Thor, Namor, Hulk and Captain American. These cartoons would be 30 minutes long with each hero’s segments being done in 7 minute chapters, and this animation was used around the classic comic book art that they would crudely animate. With Captain America, much of the artwork used was that done by the legend Jack Kirby making the cartoon a much see for fans of The King. The series would run for just one season and would be pretty popular with the kids at the time and would even gain kind of a cult following over the decades for fans of Marvel Comics and classic animated shows. Sandy Becker was the voice actor for Captain America and had lent his voice to such other cartoons as “King Leonardo And His Short Subjects”, “The Beagles” and “Go Go Gophers”. While Paul Kligman would voice Red Skull, Vita Linder would voice both Peggy and Sharon Carter and Gillie Fenwick would voice Baron Zemo with other voice actors like Henry Ramer, Jack Creley, Max Ferguson, John Vernon and Paul Soles lending their voices to characters. In the Boston area actor Arthur Pierce would dress like Captain America and would film live segments to add to the awesomeness of the airing. The cartoon is very iconic and is one you have to track down and see if you are a fan of Cap like I am. Also the theme song for this cartoon is awesome, and if you don’t know it make sure to look it up on YouTube and be ready for it to be stuck in your head all day long!

Marvel-Super-Heroes Cartoon Ad 2 Cap

Growing up I had seen many of the 1966 Captain America cartoons thanks to them being released on VHS, and I can remember being really into them as they featured the classic looking Cap as well as many of his big villains like Red Skull and Baron Zemo. You would also get cameos from many of the other classic superheroes. And to be honest I am very much looking forward to watching these cartoons again for this Tube Toons update as it’s been way too long since I last watched them, and I truly hope they keep their charm like they did for me when I was a youth. I would like to thank an Ebay seller for having this DVD in stock and making this update possible. For these Tube Toons updates I will be telling the plot and then reviewing each episode as well as giving the episodes a star rating of ½ – 4 stars. I will also be showing screen grabs from the episode to help give you a look into these cartoons. So let’s turn on the TV and see what kind of adventures Captain America has in store for us.

The next day a new fighter plane is being tested and while in the air its engines blow and it crashes as Steve and Bucky watch on. Later that night as Cap and Bucky, they find that Red Skull and his men were the ones behind the crash, and before they can capture Red Skull, he makes his escape again thanks to his men who open fire on the superheroes. Later back at Camp Lehigh, Bucky and Steve are peeling potatoes and thinking of ways to stop the Red Skull.

Review: This first episode of the 1966 Captain America cartoon is a very cool one as we get a very fast origin story on how Steve Rogers became Captain America and how the government is keeping his identity a secret, all the while he is busting heads and kicking butts. The one downside to the cartoon is that at times you are not sure if it’s taking place in America or overseas as they do a poor job of really explaining that. We also see in this episode that Captain America gets a sidekick in Bucky after the youngster finds out the secret of Steve being the man behind the Cap mask. Captain America in this episode is very proud of America and will do whatever he can to protect it as well as deal out justice to those who mean to do it harm as well as harm the innocent people. Cap leaps into action at the drop of a dime and is such a skilled fighter. He makes short work of many of those who get into his way. Bucky is a great sidekick as he as well loves America and fights hard, but in this episode he does get captured twice by the enemies and has to be saved. Agent 13, who is Peggy Carter, shows up and alsowants to bring down the spies that are infecting the area with their sinister plans. The main villains of this issue are Red Skull, Sando and Omar, who of course are all part of the Nazi party and who have sinister plans for the world as they do what they can to cause fear, panic and destruction for America and it’s allies. Of course Red Skull is the most evil of the baddies, and while he is run off this time, he is not fully stopped. One scene in this cartoon that made me laugh is when Red Skull runs and jumps out of a window. It’s so stiff and weird. This first episode is packed with lots of action as well as some great humor as The Sargent’s dislike for Steve Rogers is slapstick level as at one point the Sargent even trips over a bowl of peeled potatoes that Steve left on steps. A super fun episode and a great kick off to the series as we get an origin story, lots of fights and even showcases Red Skull who is the biggest villain in the history of Captain America.

Episode 2: The Sentinel And The Spy

The Red Skull is at his hideout and is planning his next attack, to steal the American secret weapon called Project Vanish by using a spy prisoner they have in a camp who gets to go on supplies runs after the the original prisoner is shot and killed trying to escape. While in the army truck the spy prisoner uses a hidden gas grenade to make his escape as Steve Rogers and Bucky Barns go after him. The spy prisoner uses more of the gas to knock out the guards watching over the Project Vanish that is a massive gun that with one shot makes whatever it hits disappear. By the time Steve and Bucky get there it’s too late as the weapon is in the spy’s hands and he is not afraid to use it! As Bucky heads to get help, Steve becomes Captain America and is going to try and stop this madman from getting the gun to Red Skull. Captain America uses his shield and even a shot from a tank does not bring the spy down, but it does end up hurting the leg of Cap. The spy ends up blowing himself up by accident when he turns the Project Vanish gun on full blast and it over loads, but Captain America is hurt and Bucky has to sneak him his army uniform so when he is found it’s Steve Rogers who’s injured. A few days pass and on orders Steve, Bucky and the rest of his platoon are sent on a rest break, and this angers Steve who is being taken away from the war and finding Red Skull…plus he knows that it also removes Cap from the war. While on the ship heading to their rest area, an enemy submarine attacks and sinks it, and while the others get away, Steve and Bucky are hit by the torpedo and are left behind injured, but they were at least able to change to become Captain America and Bucky. The Red Skull sends his men to the ship and after using gas they are able to take Captain America prisoner, and Red Skull tells of how he became the crimson-headed villain that serves on the side of Germany. And then with the help of a mad scientist, the Red Skull is able to brainwash Cap into following his orders! While outside Bucky is lined up with other prisoners to be killed via a firing squad, but Bucky leads the prisoners in a escape. Meanwhile Captain America on the orders of Red Skull is set to kill a top ranking American military leader and before he can carry out the order, his friend Bucky is able to stop him and together they bring down a group of German soldiers.

Review: This second episode once more has Captain America and Bucky clashing with the sinister Red Skull, who this time around is hell bent on stealing a top secret weapon as well as having one of America’s top military men assassinated by a brainwashed Cap! And of course his plans are shut down and he is once more defeated, but again not captured. Captain America in this episode goes through a lot as he is injured in three explosions, is taken captive, is punched, gets brain washed and must fight to save America from the evil doers. The one thing you can say about Cap in this episode is even when he is down, he is not out. Bucky is a hero in this one as he helps not only snap Cap out of his mind control but also saves the lives of prisoners when he leads them in a escape. With the Red Skull once more being the main villain, we are treated to his backstory of why he is who he is, and also we see that even his own side fears him and his crazed madness for power and respect. We also get to see that Red Skull seems to enjoy toying with his enemies as well as he likes to sometimes be short to the point with wanting them dead. Some of the animation in this episode for the Red Skull in his hands and facial expressions make me wonder if some of Ren Hoek’s animation from Ren & Stimpy Show was inspired by it. The action is pretty hard hitting in this episode as Captain America even gets injured, but because he is such an amazing superhero he still is able to shake it off and save the day. A really fun episode, and it’s great to see Cap always shutting down Skull on all his antics.

Episode 3: Midnight In Greymoor Castle

Steve Rogers and his platoon are called into action, and Bucky Barns is forced to stay back at the camp due to his young age. After most of the soldiers are gone, the camp is attacked, and Bucky must put on his mask and try to stop this attack on his own…he fails and is taken as bait to a castle to lure in Captain America. Inside the castle is Dr. Rollins, a man who has turned on America as he wants fame, money and power and doing science for his own country has left him with a metal hand. While in battle Steve Rogers finds a telegram about Bucky’s capture that is to the Red Skull and it calls for the young hero’s death. Changing into Captain America, he heads to the castle to rescue his friend. While at the castle Dr. Rollins gets word that Cap is on his way and starts using Z-Rays on Bucky as part of an experiment. Captain America hijacks an enemy’s plane and heads for the castle as Dr. Rollins sets a trap for the hero by using an explosive tank hidden on the table they have Bucky chained to, and all the while Dr. Rollins’ own sister tries to talk him out of turning on America to serve Germany. Once Cap gets to the castle and inside, he is warned by the Dr.’s sister that it’s a trap but after beating up some soldiers, he tries to free Bucky. The room fills with gas from the hidden tank, and Captain America is knocked out. When he awakens he finds himself in chains alongside Bucky and the Dr.’s sister. They are then loaded into a rocket to be blown up all the while Dr. Rollins begs for them to not to do this to his sister…they just smack and mock him. Cap is able to wake up before being loaded in and starts fighting back against the Germans, and this gives Bucky time to recover as well and fight off his attackers. During the fight, the sister is shot and as she is dying she is able to tell Cap that his fellow soldiers are being attacked. As she dies, Rollins uses his rocket to attack the Germans that have surrounded Cap’s men and as this happens, the castle catches fire and crumbles with Cap and Bucky being the only ones to escape.

Review: In this episode, Steve Rogers and his fellow rangers are sent on a mission that they complete, but soon he has to turn into Captain America when he finds out that Bucky has been taken prisoner to a castle and is to be killed on the orders of Red Skull. Once inside the castle, our hero of course saves the day and also sadly has to watch as an innocent woman dies and her brother who was a traitor burns to death, but not before he makes things right for America. In this episode, Cap is hard hitting and really wants to bring down the Germans as they have caused harm to so many, and when they once more try and kill his teenage sidekick, he is pushed to fight even harder to save his friends life. Bucky as well in this issue fights hard against his enemies and is very much a help to Cap in several fights. Dr. Rollins is an American who has turned on his country as he feels that they did not respect his work even when it cost him his own hand, and his own sister begs him to not to help the Germans…and this of course costs him his sister who dies, his sanity and well as his respect as the Germans mistreat him worse! And if you think about it, Dr. Rollins would be the main villain of the episode as his castle and his weapons are what come into play to try and take down Captain America and the American Rangers, and after two episodes of Red Skull, it is nice to see that Cap has made other strange baddies who wants to bring him down. This is a fun paced episode that truly feels like the comic from that time coming alive, and much of the action is lots of fun! I should also say that the cartoon does not say that the Germans are Nazis and even Hitler is replaced as the leader by just a generic looking guy, so I give them credit for trying to not show any logos or people that are connected to hate.

Episode 4: Return Of Captain America

On a submarine Iron Man, Thor, Wasp and Giant Man find the floating body of Captain America and bring him inside, and when the masked hero wakes up he is confused and goes on the attack…but finally calms down and tells his new friends of his last memories before waking up in their sub. His memory was falling from a missile into the water. As it exploded, it killed his sidekick Bucky who was holding onto the missile trying to deactivate it. The group of heroes do not at first believe that he is the real Captain America as he was missing for over 20 years, but after they test his fighting skills they learn that the masked hero is still alive and in great shape as it appears he has not aged a day since his disappearance. The heroes introduce themselves to Cap and tell him that they are known as The Avengers and that they fight for what is right, and they welcome Cap into their ranks. As The Avengers arrive back home in New York, they are meet by the press and among them is a criminal who fires a gun at them and turns Iron Man, Wasp, Thor and Giant Man into stone statues! Captain America was asleep on the sub, and when he wakes up he sees the statues and is confused by why they left him and all the big changes to the city, and heads to a hotel and meets Rick Jones who asks Cap to help him find The Avengers. Cap and Rick do some research and find a clue that shows the man with the gun who turned The Avengers to stone. Cap then follows leads and tracks him down, and after beating up some evil henchmen, he gets the man and forces him to return The Avengers to normal. And while The Avengers go looking for the madman with the gun who’s name is Bull is able to slip away after he turns them back. Captain America is welcomed to stay at The Avengers Mansion. That night Bull and his gang try to attack Cap in the mansion but soon learn they made a big mistake as they are defeated with lighting speed.

Review: This episode is the first one that removes Captain America from World War II and places him in then-modern New York and has him meeting and then joining The Avengers! It’s pretty fun as in the cartoon Cap is not even in a block of ice, and they just find him floating in the ocean where he has been for over 20 years! They also kind of make Cap a sad sack for a bit as he seems to be really depressed by the loss of Bucky and even thinks Rick Jones is him for a very short time. The Avengers are around but are turned to stone pretty early on, and they return in the very end to fully welcome Cap to the team. The main bad guy is Bull, a crime boss who has a gun that turns people to stone, and while he is dangerous, and while the gun is pretty dangerous, he is defeated pretty easily! In fact The Avengers are defeated really easily by Captain America as well when he awakens on their submarine and is confused about where he is. While it is cool to see Captain America in New York and the war being over, it still is a little strange as I feel that we still had lots more adventures during the war that seem unfinished. Plus the episode is humorless as gone are the silly moments between Steve Rogers and the Sargent. And I have to say while I enjoyed this episode, I do feel it is lacking something that made the past few episodes special, and The Avengers really do just seem like a second thought in the episode as they are around and are mostly statues throughout.

Episode 5: Zemo And His Masters Of Evil

Baron Zemo is at his jungle hideout reading a science journal that was brought to him by a pilot who flew in to deliver it as Zemo is looking for a way to get the glue that holds his mask in place off his head. He then tells the story of how it got glued on to the pilot after seeing a picture of Captain America in the journal. You see, Zemo created the glue foam that is unbreakable and it was to be use as a weapon of destruction, but Cap found his hideout and during the fight his head was covered in the glue causing his mask to forever be sealed to his face. Zemo then gives the order to set The Masters Of Evil loose on New York in order to get Captain America to appear so that they can kill him once and for all. First to attack the city is Black Knight who sprays the glue foam all over the streets! Meanwhile Melter is using his powers to melt metal as well as spray the glue foam all over while Radioactive Man as well is spraying the foam with the hopes to draw out Cap. And this plan works as Cap alongside Thor and Iron Man appear and try to stop the super villains. But while Thor and Iron Man are held at bay, Cap finds himself foamed glued to the street! Iron Man is able to cut out some of the concrete around Cap’s feet and lift him away so that they can free him at The Avengers lab. Once in the lab, Iron Man gets the idea that the only person who can free Cap from the foam glue is Paste Pot Pete, who knows all things to do with sticky stuff, and he gives Iron Man a formula that works and now Cap is free again. After tricking Melter, Radioactive Man and The Black Knight into spraying the un-stick formula around the city, our heroes defeat the villains and Zemo escapes…sort of as Thor uses his hammer to create a tornado that carries Zemo and his pilot away after they shoot Cap with the bullet only fazing him.

Review: This is a pretty fun episode as Baron Zemo is in a full rage when he finds out that Captain America is still alive and wants nothing more than to finally kill his arch nemesis! In order to try and get his revenge, he hires the help of super villains Radioactive Man, The Black Knight and Melter who are all armed with guns that fire the foam glue that Zemo created and is what has caused his mask to be stuck to his face forever. A part that made me laugh is how easy Thor and Iron Man give up the fight at the start of the battle, as they just kind of half heartedly try to defeat the baddies, and Iron Man even gives up on trying to save Cap from the glue with Melter only firing one shot at him. But in the end both Iron Man and Thor prove that they are heroes and not only help defeat all the super villains but also save Captain America from being stuck in the foam glue for the rest of his life. Baron Zemo is so overtaken with rage and the want for revenge that he even tries to fist fight with Cap as he wants to end the hero’s life so badly as he truly blames him for his life of torment of wearing the mask that is glued to his face. And because of his rage he fails to see that a way for him to remove his mask is there, but he looks past in in order to try and kill his foe. The episode has lots of action and Captain America is focused on saving New York as well as bring down Baron Zemo, and that is why this is a very cool episode as I also think that it brings back Thor and Iron Man back to being heroes.

Episode 6: The Revenge Of Captain America

Time has passed, World War II is over and his friend Bucky is long been deceased as Cap has a workout where several pro wrestlers try and attack him. He of course is too much for them and tosses them around. Once home Captain America is lost in his thoughts and depression as he feels he failed Bucky all those decades back, and it is because of him that Bucky passed away at the hands of Baron Zemo! And when Rick Jones makes the mistake of dressing in Bucky’s old uniform, he sets Cap off in a rage who swears that he will bring Zemo to justice and get revenge on him. Meanwhile in the jungles Baron Zemo is in control of a tribe and is using them to harvest gold so that he can hire a team of mercenaries to help him kill his enemy Captain America. The next day one of Zemo’s agents attack Cap and Rick at the park. As they try and kidnap Rick, they open fire of Cap who blocks the many bullets with his shield, and all the while our hero knows that Zemo is the one who set up this attack. Rick Jones is taken to Zemo’s hidden jungle empire as Captain America follows them in order to rescue his friend, and even in the sky Cap in his plane must fight off Zemo’s planes who have orders to try and kill the masked hero. Once Cap beats the plane he then out maneuvers the tanks that are trying to blow him out of the sky. Cap lands to the ground after a scary parachute accident and finds himself trapped in a deadly pit. Zemo goes and gets his men to help finish off the American Hero, but Cap escapes the pit and uses Zemo’s own weapons against him and this causes Zemo’s men to flee leaving their leader screaming with anger. Cap is able to free Rick, and together they defeat the mercenaries and Cap is able to defeat Zemo who is crushed to death under falling rocks.

Review: The sixth episode of the series takes Captain America out of World War II and drops him into the 60’s with a new teenage partner this time it being Rick Jones who you readers will also remember from the Hulk cartoons from 1966. And Captain America is very much filled with rage, anger, sadness and pride throughout this episode as he has been thinking lots about his now gone friend and sidekick Bucky and wants nothing more than to avenge him by taking down the baddie who killed him way back when. Rick Jones is a hip modern teenager who once followed the Hulk around and is now following Captain America around and wanting so badly to be a hero like him. Baron Zemo is a very evil man who treats his own men poorly as he beats them with whips and gives sharp toned orders, he also has lots of gold and will hire blood thirsty mercenaries as well to do his bidding! And because Zemo is crazy and driven by ego, he is responsible for his own death as he fires the shot that brings the rocks down that crush him. While this episode is a fun watch for some reason for me it just lacked something to make it a great episode and it kind of just putted along. I think also the harsh time jump from Cap being in the war to now being in then modern time with zero explanation also was a very odd choice for the cartoon series to do and as well makes the episode a little jarring (well I guess I should blame episode 4 for this time jump). The one cool thing about this episode is that it’s our second appearance of Baron Zemo in the cartoon series and it also looks like it might be his final appearance.

Episode 7: Let The Past Be Gone

Captain America is alone at The Avengers Mansion and looking through a photo album of his past as butler Jarvis brings him a cup of coffee. After drinking it, he checks the mansion and finds an intruder that looks like an enemy he faced in World War II that had been dead for years who quickly disappears, and then he starts hallucinating even more thinking he is kicking German butt with Bucky and even finds his old Sergeant in the Mansion given orders for soldiers to march! Captain America passes out and sees war all around him gunfire, explosions, death and destruction and it’s Jarvis who snaps him out of it, or is it Jarvis? We find out that Super-Adaptoid was posing as the butler, and this imposter had slipped something into the coffee of Cap and has taken the real Jarvis hostage. The Adaptoid then takes the appearance of Captain America, and we learn that this creature is working for A.I.M, a group of rogue scientist and creators who want to destroy Captain America once and for all! But shortly the real Cap wakes up and fights with his Adaptoid Clone knocking him out and keep him captive so that the now returning Avengers can see this odd new villain….and once they see him Giant Man, Wasp and Hawkeye all leave once more and this gives the Super-Adaptoid the chance to clone bits of all the Avengers and he once more makes a play at killing Cap. The two fight on land and in the air with Super-Adaptoid showing just how powerful he is, but Cap finally finds out Super-Adaptoid weakness is water and the two fight near a large body of water and in the end both fall into the water with Captain America surviving the fall and Super-Adaptoid meeting his end.

Review: This episode has Captain America with Jarvis at The Avengers Mansion on watch, and after drinking some coffee he feels odd and starts having visions and flashbacks and we learn that those creeps at A.I.M are to blame as they have created and sent a Super-Adaptoid to attack and clone himself to be Cap and as well learn and steal the powers of the other Avengers in order to stop all our heroes once and for all. And of course Cap is not having it as he goes after this cloning villain with extreme force and even brings him down for the count. Super-Adaptoid is truly a foe that could be a force to be wrecking with, if he did have the weakness of water that is! I like that Super-Adaptoid cloned all the powers and strengths of The Avengers he seen and for some reason decided to turn himself green! And his fight with Cap in the final really does show that he could be a threat, but also it showed his mind was not as sharp nor was he as smart as Captain America. I do like that for some reason Hawkeye has shown up and is in The Avengers and that Thor seems to be lost to the sands of time as they at least mention and show Iron Man’s suit. Also we see that A.I.M has it out for Captain America and that they have the feared Cosmic Cube at their headquarters, and if you readers know, that is a very dangerous item in the Marvel Universe. Over all this is a really fun episode as we get to see Captain America fight and out smart his foe, and we also clearly are taking the series in the direction of A.I.M being his new major foes for a bit, a very entertaining episode.

Episode 8: Coming Of The Swordsman

The Swordsman has broken into The Avengers mansion and has a quick fight against Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, claiming he wants to join them, but also is fighting them with cheap shots. Finally Scarlet Witch brings him down with her magic, and Captain America shows up after the fight, and once they find out that the Swordsman is a criminal he is able to escape by cutting the power and slipping away in the dark. A few days later Cap decides to become a part time Avenger in order to help fight evil around the world, and this angers his fellow Avengers…but soon Hawkeye finds out that this was an evil plan from Swordsman and rushes to help Cap who has stepped into a trap. In a warehouse Captain America and The Swordsman have a big fight that leaves Cap on the losing end, and when the rest of The Avengers find him the Swordsman has him prisoner and will kill him if they do not name him the new leader of the team. But Cap breaks free and along with his fellow Avengers they fight with Swordsman…while in a castle in China, The Mandarin watches and uses his 10 Rings to bring The Swordsman to him. As Hawkeye and Cap argue and the archer explains he knows the Swordsman and once feared him as he tried to kill him as a youngster. Meanwhile The Mandarin wants The Swordsman to kill Iron Man and bring down The Avengers Mansion, and if he does so, he will make sure he leads the superhero team! The Mandarin upgrades his sword and sends him back to New York with the tools to fight The Avengers only after using a fake Iron Man to planet the seed of the team accepting The Swordsman. But once inside the mansion and a bomb placed, The Swordsman has a change of heart and removes the bomb and comes clean with The Avengers…in the end The Mandarin is mad over this betrayal.

Review: This is a very fun episode as Captain America is pushed to his limit by a foe that is skilled with a sword, but like always, no matter how hard this baddie tried, he is defeated by our hero. But to be fair, The Swordsman does get the upper hand several times and it takes The Avengers to truly stop him, that is until he has his big change of heart and decides to save their lives instead of end them. I also find The Swordsman to be a very strange villain as he does not think he is a baddie even though he acts like a heel and all he really wants to do is join The Avengers and most important to him is lead them. We also get a second villain in this episode as The Mandarin appears and tries to get an ally in his quest to kill Iron Man, but of course his ego is what causes the team up to be short lived and his evil plot to be unfinished. We also get the first cartoon appearances for Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver and we also get Hawkeye and they build up his jealous nature for Captain America. We also see Iron Man, but it is a fake one just merely a hologram. Lots of fun action and drama in this episode and another very entertaining one, also I have to point out throughout this cartoon series there are times that the animation is so bad as they try to add mouths and hands in spots that just look awkward and weird and even laughable at times.

Episode 9: Bitter Taste Of Defeat

At The Avengers Mansion it seems that tempers are out of control as both Captain America and Hawkeye are always at each others throats while poor Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver have to get in the middle to cool down the situation. We soon find out that The Enchantress along with her muscle bound goon Power Man are who is causing this drama with her powers. She then starts using her magic to create monsters that only they can see, and when doing battle with it they are causing damage and fear in New York as on one is seeing what the heroes are. Power Man even uses his might strength to knock out Quicksilver and leaves him on subway tracks to be run over, but lucky for him, his fellow Avengers show up to save him…but this is all an illusion as well and ends up costing The Avengers lots of money as well as respect…and as a fight breaks out between Cap and Hawkeye they get a letter from the government that says they must disband The Avengers! They all part ways as Captain America tries to keep them together as he has figured out that the stuff they are seeing and the sour mood are the work of The Enchantress. Captain America is mocked by The Enchantress and our hero ends up fighting off her magic and tracking her down but not before she is able to take Hawkeye hostage. But once Cap tricks the villains into telling their crime, he frees Hawkeye and along with Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver bring down the villains and clear their name and become a team again.

Review: This episode features the disbanding and the reunion of The Avengers and also builds up the rivalry between Captain America and Hawkeye on who should be the one leading the team into battles, and of course it is shown that Cap is the better leader and by the end the two become friends. Captain America is the first of the superheroes to figure out that he and his team have been tricked into not only fighting among themselves, but also into seeing things that are causing them to attack delusions in the own minds that is causing destruction and fear around New York as people thing that the heroes have lost their minds and are causing chaos in the streets. But of course all the bad stuff is being done by the very sly and powerful The Enchantress who is teaming with the power house fighter Power Man to try and defeat Captain America and The Avengers for her own amusement. She fails of course and Power Man proves to be no true threat to The Avengers. They also show that Scarlet Witch is the member who tries to keep The Avengers together and from fighting and that she truly does respect Cap. Meanwhile I have to point out that Captain America fakes his own suicide by jumping from a bridge all to get into a disguise and trick Power Man into bragging about the sinister plan they are pulling off on The Avengers. Over all this is a fun above average episode that’s main attraction for me was the heated fights between Cap and Hawkeye as well all want to see Cap book the hot shot archer in his place.

Episode 10: Doorway Of Doom

Captain America is standing watch at The Avengers Mansion and informs Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver that he has been given thought on retiring from the team. They try and talk him out of it as they all then head out for the evening. The Avengers get a call from an Asian country that is calling for help on the words that they are under attack, as in reality this is a trap done by their mountain of muscle General who is stealing money from his own people and wanting to show his power by bringing down the heroes of America. Once in the country The Avengers soon find out that it was a trap to get them there and they start fighting off the Generals men with each hero showing their power and bringing down these criminals. But with the help of a trap door the baddies capture Scarlet Witch and keep her prisoner as the other three Avengers try and save her they are knocked out with gas! When they wake up they find that Scarlet Witch will be killed unless they fight the General one at a time, first up is Cap who he defeats and then Hawkeye is the next to fall…but Quicksilver’s speed tries and also fails. But in the end it’s Scarlet Witch that beats The General who turns out to be a robot! Once back home Captain America decides not to quite and stay on as the leader of The Avengers.

Review: This episode is very weird and clearly is out of order as in this one it says that Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are brand new members of The Avengers when as we have seen they have been around for several episodes now. And Captain America is once more talking about stepping away from The Avengers and it also is kind of the start of the bad blood between he and Hawkeye. The mission they are on pits them against a mountain of a man who has the power of The Hulk, but turns out to be a robot an is destroyed in the end giving all the people it ruled over freedom. And truly the main hero of this episode besides Cap is Scarlet Witch who uses her hex power to save the day several times. While the bad guy in this episode is not an iconic villain he serves his purpose well and is a true challenge for our heroes. And it’s odd to see Captain America in his own cartoon not be the one to save the day and in fact is beat in combat by the robotic General! Not much more to say here besides a fun episode that takes our heroes to Asia.

Captain America in Avengers Mansion is telling Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and Hawkeye old war stories and about his fights with Red Skull. That night Cap has a terrible nightmare about his last battle with Red Skull during World War II and how even an exploding hand grenade did not stop his foe, and he remembers that Red Skull warned him that in 20 Years he would return and that his sleeper agents as well will awaken and cause chaos. The first Sleeper awakens and his a giant robot, and Cap flies to it and tries to slow it down from meeting with the other two. Sleeper 1 is very powerful and all Cap’s attempts fail to slow it down but he has an idea to use missiles against it and races to an old military base just as Sleeper 2 awakens and can fly and is causing lots of damage to the surrounding towns. And Cap is helpless as he watches as Sleeper 2 and Sleeper 1 combine into an even more destruction machine! Captain America is able to get the help of the US Army and they attack the Sleepers with all they got while in another location Sleeper 3 is about to be awakened that is a mechanical head that looks like that of the Re Skull and is a bomb! The now full combined Sleepers head towards the North Pole with the plan to dig into the center of the Earth and explode the bomb that would explode the world! But Cap armed with a blowtorch is able to blow up the bomb in the air stopping the rampage of The Sleeper and saving the world from the Red Skulls final plan.

Review: This was a fun and strange adventure for Cap as he flashes back to his past and his then final battle with Red Skull were the villain on his “death bed” threatened the world with big end of the world destruction but only 20 Years from that day that he was defeated…a very strange plan indeed that involves robots and the Earth’s core and agents that are loyal to Red Skull for two decades after he has “died”. Most of the episode has Captain America following and trying to stop the Sleeper robots from pulling off their plans and only by luck and a blowtorch is Cap able to stop them and save the day. The Sleeper Robots are very cheesy looking and yet so fitting for the 1960’s versions of bots, Cap for the most part is being out muscled by these machines, but thanks to his quick mind and battle strategies they are defeated and brought down. One strange part of this episode is that The Avengers do not join him on this mission and they would have been very helpful in trying to help stop The Sleepers. Over all not much to day about this one besides it entertained me as it is one of the more cheesy episodes in the series and Cap is a hero who uses a blowtorch.

Episode 12: The Girl From Cap’s Past

Captain America is lost in his thoughts of being a hero out of time, and worse is when he watches a TV Documentary about World War II that shows a picture of him looking shocked, and Cap starts to remember back to the day he lost his true love during one of the final battles of the war as she lost her memory. While in modern times a group of very bad men have lost their powerful weapon Inferno 42 that can burn a city down in seconds to a secret agent of S.H.I.E.L.D and send Batroc The Leaper to get it back. Meanwhile Cap decides to go for a walk and sees a girl that looks like his lost love who does a hand off for a package and is confused by it all as he thinks is it really her and what is in the secret package. Batroc ends up going after the mystery woman and this causes Captain America to fight with him to protect her and the package. As Cap and Batroc fight the woman runs away with the package that is the missing Inferno 42 and later the two fighting masked men must work together to try and get it back as the package has cracked and the weapons awesome power could be released at any moment killing everyone in the city. As Captain America and Batroc give chase the woman who is an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D uses all types of traps to shake them off her trail, as she does not realize her life is in danger…until its to late as she passes out from the leaking Inferno 42 and this causes Batroc to turn on Cap and kick him out of a window to make an escape with the package an deliver it to his shady bosses. But Captain America finds the criminals hideout and fights with Batroc and beats him up but the masked criminal is able to escape, Cap then rushes back to find the woman very sick and being taken away by paramedics and just like that he feels that he lost his lady love once more.

Review: In this episode we learn that Captain America had kind of a girlfriend during World War II and he lost her during a celebration after a hard fought fight when she was injured and her mind goes blank and she wondered off, but in modern New York he sees a woman that looks just like her who is working for S.H.I.E.L.D and once more he fights to save the world…but possibly loses her again when she falls very ill due to the mission she was on that had to do with a very dangerous chemical. While Captain America’s love life is the biggest part of the episode for me it was great to see Batroc The Leaper make his first appearance in this cartoon series as he was one of Cap’s big iconic villains in the early days of the comic series and it was cool to see him and Cap go at it all over a package that holds a world changing weapon…not pressure on Cap at all to get it back safely. It is really weird that they will not say the name of the woman Cap is in love with throughout the whole episode, nor do they say the S.H.I.E.L.D agents name that looks like her. And for those wondering, the original woman was Peggy Carter and the woman in modern times would be her niece Sharon Carter. Over all this is a good action packed episode that has some drama thrown in for good measure.

Episode 13: The Red Skull Lives

A rocket ship lands in New York and a group of masked men start running wild in the streets, but oddly Captain America is the only one who can see them and chases them off. He then wonders if he is losing his mind and visits a Doctor and while at the visit one of the mask men attack again and like before only Cap sees him and the Doctor thinks the superhero is cracking. We soon learn that Red Skull is still alive and is working with A.I.M, and thanks to a special helmet, he is the one behind these masked men attacks as the helmet blocks everyone else from seeing the attacks! The next goal is to commit a murder and then blame it on Cap, but our hero stops the attempt and is able to knock the helmet off the mask man showing that these creeps are real to the New York crowd. Later Cap even saves the life of an A.I.M worker who warns that Red Skull has the powerful Cosmic Cube in his hands and this could be very dangerous for the whole world! Captain America makes it to the island were Red Skull is and has many obstacles to over come as he becomes temporarily blind due to a gun shot flash and even is knocked out by gas! In the end Red Skull is controlling the powers of the Cosmic Cube and Captain America fights with the madman and is able to knock the Cube into the ocean and Red Skull dives after it but is buried under rocks in the water and is presumed dead. Captain America stands victorious as he as stopped the Red Skull and Cosmic Cube for now!

Review: Captain America in this final episode showcases all his skill and proves why he is one of the world’s best superheroes as he uses his fighting skill and his mind to bring down the Red Skull as well as get rid of the Cosmic Cube for now. The Red Skull who for a brief time is teaming with A.I.M is very sneaky and uses hypno-waves in order to mess with the mind of Cap as he sends masked goons around New York to cause some trouble, but once Cap figures it out and learns of the Red Skull’s return the menace’s time is ticking down. The two bitter enemies have a showdown on a beach, and like always, good brings down evil as Cap is able to trick and defeat the Skull who even haves great cosmic powers on his side. I also like in the episode how A.I.M quickly learns that they made a mistake on trusting Red Skull and tries to stop him and when that fails they alert Captain America to his sinister plan. The final episode has lots of action and fighting, and I feel that it is very fitting that the final baddie he faces is Skull who is his most iconic villain in the comics. And what really makes this a great final episode is that it ends with Captain America looking into the sky while on top of some rocks that are in the ocean. While the animation style and voice acting might not be for everyone I myself really did enjoy this classic Captain America cartoon series and it held up after all these years.

The Marvel Comics 1966 cartoons are really an acquired taste, and compared to modern cartoons they are very, very primitive, but to me they have lots of charm and hold that classic Marvel feel that I love. And what I really liked about this Captain America series is that it featured all of his top villains that included Red Skull, Baron Zemo and Batroc The Leaper. Plus fans of The Avengers get many guest appearances from Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Scarlett Witch, Wasp, Giant Man and Quicksilver! And while I myself wish the episodes had way less of The Avengers, it was nice having them around. Captain America has always been one of my all time favorite heroes in comics, and it was great to take some time and watch his first ever cartoon series again as it has been decades since I had seen them last thanks episodes being on old VHS tapes. And with this being the second in my Tube Toons updates, I want to remind you all to please check out my first update that covered the 1966 Incredible Hulk Cartoon here, and if I had to choose which was better between Hulk or Cap I would say slightly over all I enjoyed Hulk more but story wise Cap was better. But as you can see, this Tube Toon update has come to an end, and I really enjoyed this one and I think will continue on with this themed update series, but speaking of updates our next one will keep us in the land of cartoons but will take us far away from superheroes as I will be chatting about Grape Ape! So until next time, read a comic or three, watch a cartoon or two and as always support your local horror host! GRAPE APE, GRAPE APE!
