From Horror Movie To Horror Comic: Return Of The Living Dead (1985)

Happy October 2024! For this one, we will be having a very cool “From Horror Movie To Horror Comic” update that will be based on one of my favorite 80’s zombie films, a film with an amazing soundtrack, great characters and has scary and yet funny zombies and I am of course talking about the horror comedy film Return Of The Living Dead from 1985! This punk rock Horror fright flick is a staple for many fans of the genre as it not only has creepy moments but it also has some great funny ones highlighted by iconic songs that stick in your brain your whole life. What we will be taking a look at for this review is a graphic novel written by actor Don Calfa who played Mortician Ernie in the film based on his script for the film’s sequel that he wanted to get made way back when. So if you are ready, let’s party with the dead at the local cemetery and see if Trash will take off her cloths again!

Return Of The Living Dead 1

The zombies that make up Return Of The Living Dead are super dangerous and could be some of the most dangerous undead we have ever covered here on Rotten Ink! The zombies in this film are mostly pack killers and swarm a victim given a human no place to escape. They come in all types of decay, from the newly dead to the long dead with only a skeleton remaining, and this grizzly appearance they have is enough to scare the life out of their victims and cause extreme panic. The zombies use their teeth and hands to rip and tear human skin and even skulls apart as they eat brains and this is a very painful death for the living. The zombies also can move fast and run as well as can speak and have intelligence that they use to trick and capture their next meal. They are reanimated back to life thanks to Trioxin, a gas created by the government that can also infect the living if exposed direct to it making the infected person slowly die and turn into a brain craver. The zombies also can survive attacks and even removal of body parts, in fact the pieces even try to attack making their danger level even higher for the living as every part of them want to try and make you dead. But while hacking, smashing and shooting don’t seem to work, even if you target the brain they can be stopped by being burnt to ashes and as well being blown to bits thanks to say a massive bomb dropped on them. But even with that, people need to be scared as the smoke from their burning flesh will infect the weather and cause acid rain that once it leaks into the ground at your local cemetery the dead will rise again and this cycle will repeat. I truly think up to this point on a From Horror Movie To Horror Comic update that the zombies from Return Of The Living Dead are the most dangerous ones we have covered, as it seems that only luck can truly stop them from expanding their ever growing army.

Return Of The Living Dead 2Return Of The Living Dead 3Return Of The Living Dead 4

Okay, now that we know how the zombie kill and just how dangerous they are to the living in the Return Of The Living Dead universe, let’s now take some time and chat about the iconic film they are from as we head to the party of the living dead! And like always, I will be taking the film’s write up from our friends at IMDB and then after that I will be writing about the film’s production as well as my thoughts on it. So wear a helmet, as these partygoers want brains and be aware they also stink to high heaven!

Return Of The Living Dead (1985)

“When a bumbling pair of employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to re-animate as they go on a rampage through Louisville, Kentucky seeking their favorite food, brains.”

Return Of The Living Dead originally was the brainchild of Night Of The Living Dead co-creator John Russo, who, after splitting away from George A. Romero, ended up owning the “Living Dead” aspect of the film. In 1979, he wrote a sequel to the film called “Return Of The Living Dead” as a novel and years down the line producer Tom Fox wanted to bring his novel to the big screen in 3D with Texas Chainsaw Massacre director Tobe Hooper at the helm. But after Hooper left the project scriptwriter Dan O’Bannon was brought in to direct as well as rewrite the script as many of the people involved in the film’s production thought that Russo’s draft was weak and slightly cheesy. The film was then cast with such names as Clu Gulager, Don Calfa, James Karen, Thom Mathews, Miguel A. Nunez Jr., Jewel Shepard and Linnea Quigley to name a few making up our human cast and names like Allan Trautman, Jerome Coleman, Terrence Houlihan and David Bond being casted in undead roles. The film was shot in Bakersfield, California and was a stressful experience for the actors and crew as this was O’Bannon’s first film and he and producers seemed to clash over much of the film’s very tight filming schedule. The films music was from such bands as The Cramps, The Damned, SSQ, 45 Grave and Roky Erickson and became truly part of the film’s cult following. The film was released in theaters on August 16, 1985 and did pretty well at the American Box Office bringing in over $14.2 million dollars on a budget of $4 million. And the film was a hit with film critics and fans and would go on to gain even more cult status when released on home media as well as shown on cable TV. The film was released alongside these other classic Horror and Cult films Teen Wolf, A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Fright Night, Weird Science, Friday The 13th V: A New Beginning, Cat’s Eye, Silver Bullet, Lifeforce, Once Bitten, Godzilla 1985, The Bride, Re-Animator and my favorite Zombie film of all time Day Of The Dead. And for those of you who really want an in-depth look at the making of this film, check out the documentary called “More Brains! A Return To The Living Dead” as it deep dives into the film’s history and showcases it better than I ever could.

Return Of The Living Dead was a film I first saw on VHS when my brother and I rented it from a local video store and it quickly became one of my favorites as everything about it brought me so much joy and entertainment! I can remember loving the looks of the zombies and of course Tarman was the standout of the undead creatures but I also always liked the rotten look of them all as when I think of zombies these mixed with the Romero amd Fulci film versions are what comes to mind. The film also had a kickass soundtrack with lots of super catchy songs with the likes of “Surfin’ Dead” by The Cramps, “Partytime” by 45 Grave, “Dead Beat Dance” by The Damned and “Tonight (We’ll Make Love Until We Die)” by SSQ being some of my favorites, and it was great hearing The Damned on a soundtrack as they were a band I was a big fan of thanks to the BBC show “The Young Ones” were they performed the song Nasty for a Halloween special. Way back before the days of DVD and Blu-Ray, I had to find this film on VHS to own and that was a quest as the film was very hard to find, and when you did finally find it, the tape carried a very high price tag, and when I finally found it at a second had store I felt like I had found one of the holy grails to my collection…now the film is super easy to find on every format, but for that brief time I can remember all my friends who were into Horror always wanted to watch it when they came over. My favorite character in the film was Spider played by one of my favorite genre actors Miguel A. Nunez Jr. as the character is a punk but also seems to truly care about his friends as well as the safety for other people, and of course everybody loves Trash played by Linnea Quigley as what is not to love about a sexy naked punk rock woman who ends up turning into a brain eating zombie! I am sure I am not the only one who is going to say this, but if you love 80’s Horror, Zombie Films and just Horror in general and have not seen this one, make sure to watch Return Of The Living Dead as it is a fun Horror Comedy film that brings the blood splatter and belly laughs. Also do yourself a favor and just buy this film on VHS, DVD or Blu-Ray as it as well as the films soundtrack on Cassette, Vinyl or CD are working owning in your collection.

Return Of The Living Dead 8

I love Return Of The Living Dead, as it’s a film that is easily in my Top 5 Favorite Zombie Films of all time and is a film that I think every horror fan should watch as well as own on physical media in their film collections like I have said above. There is something special about the film as all the elements just seem to work perfectly together and that’s from the directing, acting, music, effects and even set design this is just a well made and great Horror Film that deserves all the praise it gets as well as the Cult status it built for itself. We are now at the review part of this update and I would like to first thank Dead Mouse for making this Graphic Novel and making this update possible, I would also like to say Rest In Peace to actors Clu Gulager, James Karen, Don Calfa, Mark Venturini, Cathleen Cordell and any others that passed away as they helped make this film amazing and all did fantastic work in their respected roles. I would also like to remind you all that I grade these comics on a star scale of 1 to 4 and am looking for how well the comics stay to the source material, its entertainment value and its art and story. So if you are ready, let’s head into the cemetery and party with the living dead.

Revenge Of The Living Dead GN 1

Revenge Of The Living Dead # 1  **
Released in 2019    Cover Price $14.99    Dead Mouse    # 1 of 1

The bomb has missed it’s target in Kentucky to contain the zombie outbreak and only wiped out some of them. Tina and Ernie are able to survive in the mortuary while across the street in the warehouse Spider, Casey and Chuck survive but boards have fallen on Burt, and they think he is dead. The groups all meet up at the mortuary and are happy to see some of their friends made it out alive from the undead attack as well as the army bomb attack. And best of all they find that embalming fluid can keep the zombie versions of Frank and Freddy (who both also survived) under control and Ernie comes up with the idea of taking one of the ambulances, loading it with some trioxin from the warehouse and using it as well as the two now controlled zombie to expose what the government is up to! Once back in the warehouse Spider and Ernie take out Tarman who has placed his head back on as zombie Frank and Freddy get the trioxen from the basement and load it, and then the group escape and hide as the army is moving in with foot soldiers and vehicles again and have orders to kill everything in site! Ernie and the others watch as all around them the zombies and soldiers are clashing with both sides losing members. Our heroes end up in a mall parking lot and have to kill a truck driver they saved that got bit before arming themselves and having to fight off the attacking zombies who have even killed the military general! As Tina and Casey move the vehicle away from the battle Ernie, Spider and Chuck armed with tons of firearms start blasting the undead. Ernie and the others are able to escape and get away and come in contact with the military and after a brief standoff Ernie, Tina, Spider, Casey and Chuck are able to trade the remaining trioxen and the dead Frank and Freddy for their freedom. While back with the military, the zombies arrive and both Frank and Freddy as well go on the attack and kill them all as even one of the canisters cracks open and creates a new Tarman. The comic ends with Ernie and the others getting to freedom as back in front of the warehouse Burt is alive and fighting off zombies.

Revenge Of The Living Dead is a pretty entertaining read but is also kind of a letdown on several levels as it does not feel like it even is the same universe as the film its based on and while many of the films characters are around, they seem off and not like they should as it was very clear that Don Calfa was one of the writers as the character he plays Ernie is the main focus and is the main hero with all the other returning characters playing background players to his story of survival. The graphic novel’s plot has the bomb attack by the Government on Kentucky being a failure and with that many of the zombies are still running wild but also Ernie, Spider, Chuck, Tina and Casey also have survived and are trying to find away out of the warzone as now armed soldiers are being sent out to kill anything moving, and a subplot has Ernie figuring out that embalming fluid can help keep the undead under control for a short amount of time and uses it on Freddy and Frank to help him and the others get out alive. Ernie is the hero of this GN as he is the one that gets all the remaining punks together, sets all the plans in motion, finds a possible slowdown for the zombie infection and is the one that uses his mind to get himself and the others out of harm’s way buy bribing the military for their freedom. And Spider, Tina, Casey and Chuck are along for the ride taking orders from Ernie and being background players and only doing something big to help when Ernie commands it…and that is a big disappointment…as is the fact Ernie’s ankle injury seems to vanish really quickly as the story goes on. The GN also spends a lot of time with the military and the Generals arguing and being really bad at their jobs, and this “humor” is a little silly and felt more at place in a Looney Tunes cartoon. The zombies are all around with even Tarman and Trash making appearances and are super hungry for brains and the kills are bloody and gooey, plus we even get to see the body of Suicide still in the basement of the warehouse right were Tarman left it. The cover for this graphic novel is very cool and showcases all the main characters of this book, and Jason Miller is the interior artist who has a cartoonish style that is really good and cool…but not the style I would think of when it comes to Return Of The Living Dead. And that is kind of how I feel about this graphic novel as a whole; while it really is a “unofficial” sequel to the film, nothing about it even feels like the film, again sure characters and locations return but everything just seems off. I am glad I have this GN for my collection and it was a charming read, I sadly have to say I was over all letdown as I was looking for the punk rock charm that the film had in a comic, instead got the character of Ernie trying to be a more with it version of Ash from the Evil Dead films. I think I made my expectations way to high due to my love of the film and the fact Don Calfa wrote it. Check out the artwork below to see the style of Miller in this GN and see if you think it has that ROTLD feel.

Revenge Of The Living Dead GN Art 1Revenge Of The Living Dead GN Art 2Revenge Of The Living Dead GN Art 3

I really wanted to like Revenge Of The Living Dead more than I did, I just could not get past some of the flaws that just took me out of it…like the mind controlled Freddy and Frank are dressed in suits and are acting like servants to Ernie, like why was that a thing as Frank burns to death in the film and Freddy was super scary as the blinded by acid zombie who was still trying to charm his girlfriend while talking about eating her brains…here in the GN they are just tools that truly add nothing to the story as the whole can be controlled by the embalming fluid goes nowhere. And sadly I am not the only one in my circle of friends who read Horror Comics that was letdown by this one. But let’s hope that sometime in the future a publisher like Eibon Press, HorrorHound Comics, Dynamite Comics, IDW or even a returning Fangoria Comics get a chance at doing a series based on Return Of The Living Dead and get all the right creators to make it what it should be and that’s a scary funny, brain eating, punk rock, fist shaking great time. With that, let’s leave the world of zombies behind and head into the world of voodoo as the countdown to Halloween 2024 continues and we take a look at Mardi Gras Massacre and the comic book based on it. So until next time, read a Horror Comic or three, watch a Horror Film or two and as always support your local Horror Host! See you next update for a sleazy good time in the Big Easy.

Malibu Comics Ultraverse Memories: Sludge

Rotten Ink is a place to talk comic books, and like I have stated before, Malibu Comics is a company that sadly went under way too quickly and was bought out by a company that had zero clue about what to do with the characters they now owned. One of the characters that I was a fan of was the creature known as Sludge, who, thanks to toxic chemicals, was created to stop crime as well as be misunderstood by those who came in contact with him. And because he is a creature, a monster if you will, he is perfect to cover for one of our Ultraverse update as he is big and scary and is one of the Ultraverse characters that I have been looking forward to covering since I started these updates covering Malibu Comics. So if you are ready, let’s head to the dark and spooky swears and try to stay clear of Sludge!

Sludge 1

Frank Hoag is a cop who was dirty and was on the take of a crime boss named John Paul Marcello, but he finds himself a target of a hit when he refuses to kill another dirty cop that is on his boss’ payroll. Frank is killed by being shot several times and then blown up with a bomb, but something happened to Frank. As the bomb exploded, it also hit some nearby chemical drums that came in contact with Frank and cause him to become an oozing creature when his contaminated body is tossed near sewage. Now as this creature known as Sludge, he has many powers including being strong, able to shrug off many attacks and poisons, does not need air to break, can grow back his own limbs and even has a deadly touch that melts human skin. Sludge is a superhero, but also walks that line as his grotesque appearance and messed up speech seems to scare people that he is trying to save. It’s clear that Sludge was Malibu Comics’ version of Incredible Hulk and Man-Thing and was one of the first characters that drew me into the Ultraverse.

Sludge 2Sludge 3Sludge 4

So we all know that Marvel Comics became the parent company of Malibu when they bought them back in 1994. Over the following years after the purchase, they phased out the Malibu Ultraverse heroes, and as of this posting many decades have passed and these characters seem to be in limbo as none of them have seen the light of day in comics as well as other media projects. Now if I worked for Marvel Comics as a writer this is what I would have done with Sludge: first I would have him be hiding and lurking in the sewers of New York and after scaring some homeless people that are seeking shelter from a bitter cold night they alert the police who do not listen to their tale of a creature in the sewer but a person that does listen is Bruce Banner and this leads to him thinking that The Glob is back and as The Hulk he looks into this and we get an epic clash between The Hulk and Sludge as the two do not communicate and The Hulk thinks Sludge is a new look for his old foe! After the two work out this misunderstanding, I would keep Sludge in The Hulk universe but would also have him cameo in other Marvel titles set in New York like Spider-Man, Daredevil, The Avengers and Fantastic Four as you know as well as I do, comic readers would love to see him battle The Thing. And while in The Hulk universe, Sludge would be a friend and help him fight against the likes of The Abomination, Rhino, Absorbing Man and The Leader to name a few, but I would also do a mini series that would have Sludge finding himself in Florida and testing his death touch against the burning touch of Man-Thing!  It’s a shame that Marvel Comics is not using Sludge as he could have been a very interesting character in the Marvel Universe and could have all types of possibilities in both comics and in film and could have stayed a good guy or even turned into a villain to be a thorn in the side of any hero he faced. Shame on you, Marvel Comics and Disney for allowing these character to fade away with time.

Sludge 5Sludge 6Sludge 7

Sadly Sludge did not get the same treatment when it came to merchandise as besides the comic series, he got very few other items. Trading cards, promo posters and POGS are all I can really think of. He never even made it to the Galoob Ultraverse toy series as his figure was rumored but cancelled before release, but some really cool fan figures have been made of Sludge as well as a few other forms of items. It’s crazy that Sludge never did get his fair share of that merchandise bubble as his monstrous look was made for toys.

Sludge 8

When Malibu Comics started their Ultraverse line many of the heroes caught my attention with one of them of course being Sludge as at this time monster hero comics were some of my favorite things to read when it came to superhero titles as new issues of Incredible Hulk, Toxic Avenger and even somewhat Pitt were comics you could find in my hands sitting around the house. When I saw Sludge what came to mind was that Malibu was mixing Swamp Thing, Man-Thing and The Hulk together to make a superhero that blends in a touch of horror, and that is why I knew I had to read this comic series. Sadly growing up where I did, it was hard to find indie comics and Malibu comics were not stocked at the grocery stores that I would have to get most of my currant comics from. But when I finally was able to discover the Ultraverse, I truly became a fan of many of their characters, and Sludge was one of those as the monster characters in comics always caught my attention. And after reading the Sludge issues for the first time I really enjoyed them as I felt they were a great mix of the 90’s style superhero comics that was going at the time of their release, and yet they also had that 70’s feel of classic horror comics that were being released by DC and Marvel at that time like Swamp Thing, Tomb Of Dracula and Man-Thing. And from that moment on I was a fan of Sludge. And over the years when I found myself buying back all the Malibu Comics I used to have, Sludge was at the top of the list of ones I must get back and cover on Rotten Ink, and now here we find ourselves at that update that is long overdue. Really I did poor Sludge wrong as he was slated to be the first “Malibu Comics Ultraverse Memories” updates but when the time came I covered the team The Exiles with Prototype and Hardcase to follow, and Sludge kept getting pushed back. While Prototype is one of my favorites as well from Malibu I should have covered Sludge at the start of these themed updates. I am very much looking forward as well to sitting back and re-reading these issues as it has been a very long time since I have read them and I am hoping they hold up! To sum it up, I am a Sludge fan and if you like horror themed superhero comics make sure to check him out as his issues can be found pretty cheap at your local comic shops or even online. Also I want to thank the gone but not forgotten Bookie Parlor and its owner Hal for introducing me to Malibu Comics.

Sludge 9

As you can see, Sludge was one of the Malibu Comics that made me become a fan all those years back as I do find his look and backstory interesting! But growing up I never read the full series and only had spot issues in my collection so this will be a fun time reading them from start to finish. I want to thank both Bell Book And Comic as well as Game Swap Kettering for having all these issues in stock and making this update possible. I want to also remind you all that I grade these comics on a star scale of 1 to 4 and am looking for how well the comics stay to the source material, their entertainment value and their art and story. So if you are ready, let’s head to the sewers and see what Sludge has in store for us.

Sludge Comic 1

Sludge # 1  ***
Released in 1993.   Cover Price $2.50     Malibu Comics     # 1 of 12

Radio DJ Chase Naylor is talking about the case of missing NYPD Detective Frank Hoag, who has gone missing after responding to a break-in where lots of blood and bullets are found. The DJ is saying that the city should be sick of all the deaths, and as he is broadcasting a gang of thugs shoot at a rival and end up also killing innocent people in the gunfire. As the gang members get away, they run into the monster hero known as Sludge who destroys their car and takes many of their bullets and even a sword stab without being hurt. One by one Sludge kills the punks with some dying painfully as if he touches you new lumpy tumor like skin grows, and Sludge has no sympathy for those he is killing. Sludge also finds that thinking and speaking hurts and that while he is a muck monster, he does still bleed red blood. Sludge thinks back to the night he went missing as he is Detective Hoag and that crime lord John Paul Marcello is the one who gave the orders for him to be killed when Hoag refused to kill a fellow officer. And when the crime lord’s goons shot Hoag, a toxic chemical spilled all over his body and caused him to turn into this monster when it mixed with the sewer water they dumped his body in. When the gang’s bodies are found the police are happy that someone took care of them for good as Sludge is seen by the homeless that are living in the sewer.

The first issue of Sludge holds up for me as it is a great and entertaining read that showcases a monster hero who deals death to a handful of punks who deserve to meet their maker after killing innocent people during a hit. The plot is mostly about Sludge and his former life as a regular human that was a police detective that was involved in some shady stuff with the local crime lords that mostly was allowing drug deals to happen on beats he was on, but once he refuses to kill for them, he finds himself the victim of homicide and only because of a toxic chemical split on him is how he is still “alive” if you want to call being a bright blue muck monster living. Sludge is a confused mess of a hero as his brain is on fire, his thoughts are a mess, his body misshapen and his own speech hurts him…but while a mess, he is very much doing the right thing as he is going after criminals and dealing death to those who a doing truly evil things in the streets of New York. And his powers of creating flesh on his victims looks like a painful and terrible way to go. John Paul Marcello is a crime lord that gets what he wants and does not like being told no, and if you cross him, you will find yourself swimming with the fishes or is that sewer rats? The comic is pretty violent and showcases lots of blood an killings and that is kind of what sets it a part from the Marvel and DC Comics at that time. The cover for this issue is pretty cool and shows Sludge’s face and lets the reader get a real good look at him. The interior art done for this issue was by Aaron Lopresti and is really great stuff, and I like the way he draws Sludge to look very goopy and gross. I have to also point out that when Frank Hoag is covered in the toxic waste his transformation makes you flashback to the Troma film The Toxic Avenger, or at least it made me do that. The comic also features a backup story that is all about that vampire character Rune so you get a little more bang for your buck here. What a cool read, and I know remember why I was a fan of this comic series when I was younger as you cannot go wrong with a massive creature hero killing punks on the New York streets. Let’s see what issue two has in store for us and if it as well holds up.

Sludge Comic 2

Sludge # 2  ***
Released in 1993    Cover Price $1.95     Malibu Comics     # 2 of 12

Bloodstorm is a paid assassin and his latest job is killing a man’s father so that he can collect the family fortune, and killing does not bother Bloodstorm as he is good at his job and nothing is going to stand in his way. Meanwhile Sludge stumbles on some of Mr. Marcello’s men who are beating up a guy who owes money, and they are going to take a body part as payment…but instead they all meet a bloody and painful fate. Detective Quinn is looking into these vigilante style killings, and he and the doctor are confused over the rapid skin growths that appear on many of the victims, and they come up with nothing. Meanwhile Bloodstorm once more is performing a hit and this time kills a woman as well as some security guards that works the apartment she lives in, and like before he takes joy in his deeds. Detective Quinn is working for Mr. Marcello and they are all trying to figure out who is killing the criminals on the street, and they end up calling in the services of Bloodstorm who costs them lots of money but they think he is worth it and will find the vigilante who is taking down crime. Days pass and many shakedowns take place all the while Bloodstorm is watching and waiting for his target, and it finally appears as Sludge shows up on a pier and attacks more of Marcello’s goons. Sludge and Bloodstorm fight with Bloodstorm getting the upper hand and using an exploding arrow that takes Sludge down. This is all witnessed by Detective Quinn who was part of the shakedown of the man who owned the crime boss money, truly showing he is a corrupt cop.

The second issue of Sludge has our goopy hero still on the prowl and killing off the goons of the crime boss Mr. Marcello who is now very much annoyed by the killing of his men and that is why he hires the assassin Bloodstorm to take care of his “issues”. And speaking of Bloodstorm he is one scary villain as he kills with ease and very brutally and gets joy watching people die, all because he was a bullied child who was laughed at and mocked. Bloodstorm also gets joy in hiring woman to come to his house were he will beat them almost to death with his bare hands…he is one sick psycho! Mr. Marcello and his men are you typical crime family who do bad things but they look tame compared to Bloodstorm. Detective Quinn is another corrupt cop who is on Marcello’s payroll and is the cop that was slated to be killed by Hoag, and this is unknown to him and he is still on the crime lords payroll. Sludge meanwhile is still killing the baddies and wondering around the streets even bonding with the cities homeless. We also see that Sludge has to eat as well to survive and he gets his food from dumpsters! It’s crazy that Bloodstorm is able to use his explosive arrow to take Sludge down at least for a little bit, but while the issue ends with Sludge hurt we all know that he will recover to continue his crusade to bring down the crime in New York. And it is nice to see that Sludge, while un-killable, does have some weakness and that can be challenged by skilled fighters like Bloodstorm who is also known as Unknown! The second issue as well really holds up and is way more bloody than most superhero comics going at this time, and truly Sludge was one of the best characters Malibu Comics made for their Ultraverse series. The cover is cool and has Sludge and Bloodstorm fighting with Aaron Lopresti returning to do the interior art that of course is really good! And with that, let’s head to issue three as I want to see how Sludge makes his comeback in this fight against a trained killer like Bloodstorm.

Sludge Comic 3

Sludge # 3  ***
Released in 1993    Cover Price $1.95     Malibu Comics     # 3 of 12

Sludge is hurt on the ground as a group of crazed people appear and pick him up and toss his body into the ocean and then start attacking Bloodstorm who holds them off before retreating out of this crazed mobs attack. Detective Quinn as well finds himself being chased by the crazed people and he dives into the ocean to get away from them. At the bottom of the ocean Sludge wants to just die and end his weird life as a hero, while above ground a young mobster named Pistol working for Lord Pumpkin has his men wait around the dock to take down Sludge if he appears again as they have interest in this creature that has killed many of Mr. Marcello’s men, and he heads to Pumpkin to fill him in on what he has found out. While Mr. Marcello and his men are hiding out in a skyskraper, and the crazed mob are running wild in the streets and even climbing the building talking crazy. At the bottom of the ocean Sludge is forced to fight with a race of sea creature monster people called The Rivermen who end up taking him down and as their prisoner and to Lord Pumpkin who promises Sludge death if he helps him in his war with Marcello. Meanwhile Mr. Marcello sends a massive tank to New Jersey to go after Lord Pumpkin who is pushing into New York and his territory, and after taking down the tank that attacks his base Lord Pumpkins offer to Sludge is also shot down as the mucky hero wonders into the streets that is still filled with crazy people.

For those wondering, the crazed mob of people are explained in the Malibu Mini Series called “Break Thru” and the events carried over into Sludge. They do a very poor job of explaining them to the readers who just read Sludge and not the other million crossover and events that Malibu constantly had going on. The plot of this issue has the streets being filled with people who are like a mindless mob just wandering around the streets causing chaos, while Bloodstorm returns to his home, waiting to be paid for the job he got done and that was “killing” Sludge who in turn is not dead but wants to die. And throw in now a turf war between Mr. Marcello’s gang and the gang of the evil demon Lord Pumpkin and you have a showdown in hell. In this issue Sludge is a creature that really just wants to find peace in death, as he feels he has gotten his revenge and frightened those who double-crossed him when he was a human. But even when he finds a way to truly die he does not take as it would mean that he would have to work alongside another crime boss that this time is also a demon. Speaking of Lord Pumpkin, he is a supernatural crime boss who is making his way into New York and seems to get more joy in the upcoming gang war than actually gaining any real power. He also seems to employ some very odd henchman as one is a young kid who is good with guns that is called Pistol, and with this youngster he also seems to be calling the shots in the streets and is Pumpkin’s right hand man. The action in this comic is really fun and Sludge’s fight with the Rivermen is great and showcases monster vs. monsters and at one point the Rivermen are called Creature From The Black Lagoon’s…so brownie points there. The cover for this issue is really cool and has Sludge in the water being attacked by the fish creature Rivermen and like with the other two issues the interior art by Aaron Lopresti is great stuff and his style for Sludge’s look would be hard to beat for any other artist at Malibu at the time. Over all another great issue that makes me look forward to rereading the next issue.

Sludge Comic 4

Sludge # 4  ***

Two brothers are messing around in the New York sewers when they find Sludge and run away in fear, but only one makes it out alive as the other is killed by an alligator creature that rips the youngster apart, leaving the younger brother shaken and hiding in some bushes in the park covered in blood. The local newspaper get the scoop on the story and reporter Shelley Rogers wants to cover the case, and she gets a report that two city workers were also attacked in the sewer. Meanwhile Sludge finds the bloody coat of the murdered kid and starts wandering around looking to find him, and even comes above ground to get a newspaper to read. Meanwhile Shelley is getting no help from the police nor any photographer as she wants to head into the sewers and find what is causing these deaths. Shelley heads alone into the sewer and soon runs into Veffir Voon Iyax, the alligator man who also goes by “He Of Cold Blood And Boundless Appetites” and before he can attack and kill Shelley the wall shatters and Sludge comes to her aid an ends up killing Veffir Voon Iyax with some big hits to his skull! In the end Sludge crushes the camera of Shelley and tells her he does not want his picture in the paper nor does he want people to know who he is. Sludge then picks up the body of his fallen foe and heads into the sewer.

What a fun read as this issue has monster vs. monster as Sludge takes on Veffir Voon Iyax, a weird alligator man who can talk and loves to kill and eat humans. We also now have Shelley Rogers, a reporter who has seen Sludge and knows that he lives in the sewers. And while the fight between the two monsters could have been more epic, it does show that Sludge is very powerful as he is able to kill his foe with his bare hands and does so very easily. The character of Veffir Voon Iyax is pretty interesting as it makes you wonder where he came from and is he a God like he tried to pretend to be, plus why can he talk and is pretty smart with his words. Sludge shows that while he truly was a crooked cop he makes for a pretty great hero now that he is a muck monster who does what he can to protect people from those who are doing very bad things. And we all know that Shelley Rogers will more than likely become a pain in the side for Sludge as she will try and report about this monster hero from New York’s sewers. The issue has blood spilt as Veffir Voon Iyax murders many and even keeps body parts around his sewer home. Lord Pumpkin and Mr. Marcello and their crime family war is not spoken about in this issue, as this seems like Sludge who is very confused in his mind might have forgotten that the two crime lords even exist. This is such a great read as the plot being the build and final battle between two monsters was a great break from our story of Sludge hunting down and killing hoods. The cover for this issue is also very cool as it’s a showdown between Sludge and Veffir Voon Iyax and the interior art is done still by Lopresti who does a great job and his splash pages in this issue is really cool. Over all, this is once more a great issue in the series and like the others before it, I enjoyed revisiting this one as it held up really well.

Sludge Comic 5

Sludge # 5  ***
Released in 1994    Cover Price $1.95     Malibu Comics     # 5 of 12

A couple are walking home when they are attacked by a zombie looking creature that kills them and starts to eat them. The victims’ screams are heard by Sludge who busts from the sewer but he is too late to save the couple as the zombie creature runs off the police arrive and catch a look at Sludge standing over two dead bodies. Sludge is able to escape but the police blame him for the deaths and now he is wanted for murder! Shelley Rogers, the reporter who was saved by Sludge, is upset by the report as she is on the side of Sludge and says he is a hero and not a cannibal! Garrett Whale is a professor who is dealing with lung cancer and was fired many years back from the Aladdin Company due to his experiments dealing with the dead, as the cannibal zombie was his friend that died in an explosion and he brought back to life! And when hearing about Sludge and his touch that builds tumors on his victims he thinks that he can maybe use Sludge to find a cure for cancer and hires some thugs to get the creature for him. They are able to trick Sludge in the sewer and use a dart to knock the muck hero out and get him back to Whale’s lab. Meanwhile the Zombie is hanging out in the alleys with the homeless who take him in as one of their own, and it remembers back to the day it was created and how Whale buried it back in the ground when he thought it was a failure…the zombie ends up killing and eating the homeless man who took him in. Meanwhile Shelley Rogers gets the news and heads out to the location of these cannibal attacks, while back at Whale’s Lab, Sludge is about to be experimented on when the Zombie busts in and kills not only Whale but also his thugs! Sludge breaks free and the two monsters fight with Sludge ending the Zombies life again with his touch as tumors grow all over the undead monster as it once more slips into the abyss. In the end Sludge buries the Zombie in a cemetery and shuffles off to head back to his sewer home, as Lord Pumpkin watches his every move.

The fifth issue in Sludge is another monster fight as this time around our sewer muck monster hero fights with a cannibalistic zombie who is running around the city eating people, and worse of all Sludge is getting the blame for the crimes! And let us also not forget that a Professor who is dying from cancer is also on the hunt for Sludge as he thinks he might hold the key to cure him. Sludge in this issue is more confused than before as words do not come out right, his memories are jumbled and he still really just wants to die. But while he is dealing with his mind issues Sludge still is a hero and rushes to the aid of those screaming for help. Professor Garrett Whale is a very smart man who has turned bad when he finds out that he has lung cancer and this leads him into bringing the dead back to life, creating and spreading a new street drug and also taking Sludge prisoner in order to experiment on him! But of course Whale ends up paying for his crimes as the undead creature he created comes for him. The Zombie was once a very brilliant Doctor that might have found a cure for cancer but a lab accident leaves him dead and his cure gone with him, and due to desperation Whale brings him back from the dead…but the man he was is no longer and in his place is a flesh eating zombie. News reporter Shelley Rogers, who was saved by Sludge from being killed by the alligator man Veffir Voon Iyax, does not believe that her hero is the one eating people around the city and wants to help prove his innocence, and this shows that Sludge has some friends in the city with Shelley being one and the homeless being the others. The fight between Sludge and the Zombie is really cool as the undead human eater wanted to find peace, and thanks to the cancerous touch of Sludge, he finds just that. The cover for this issue is really cool and has a true indie horror comic look to it, with yet again Lopresti being the interior artist. And with them hinting that that war between Lord Pumpkin and Mr. Marcello is far from over, you know a crime land war is in our future, so with that let’s see what issue six has in store for us.

Sludge Comic 6

Sludge # 6  ***
Released in 1994    Cover Price $1.95     Malibu Comics     # 6 of 12

Tabitha works for Lord Pumpkin and delivers his drugs to very big clients all who do what is asked of them in order to get the drugs, but on her way to deliver she is attacked and killed with her body dumped at the base of Pumpkin and her drugs taken. Lord Pumpkin is angered as he was in love with Tabitha and sends Pistol and his men out on the streets to find out who did this hit, and while upset and saddened by the loss of his love Lord Pumpkin feeds her body to his plant that produces the drug he sells. We find out that business man and secret crime lord Wong Ten Yu is the one who placed the hit to get the Zuke drug to see what it is made of, meanwhile near the dock one of Yu’s ships explodes almost killing everyone on board with the only survivor being saved by Sluge who by accident tumors up her arm. This explosions sparks a talk between Yu and Mr. Marcello as they seem to both have a common enemy in Lord Pumpkin, and for the meeting each bring their top assassins and henchmen with Marcello even hiring Bloodstorm to watch his back. Lord Pumpkin gets the word of the meeting and gets a surprise guest as Sludge appears wanting to talk to the demon, as he will help him now if he grants him death. The meeting takes place at a cemetery and unknown to Yu and Mr. Marcello in the shadows watching is Lord Pumpkin along with Pistol and Sludge…and after a few moments Sludge goes on the attack! And then Lord Pumpkin shows himself to his two enemies and they are in shock of his appearance as he really does have a Pumpkin for a head and is a demonic looking creature. Lord Pumpkin lets them know that the war is truly on as he disappears with Pistol and Sludge as another fight with the crime lords is in the works.

In this issue the war between three different crime families is about to go down as each have made big mistakes that is causing lots of heat and New York is becoming a pressure cooker! It is clear that New York is not big enough for Lord Pumpkin, Wong Ten Yu and Mr. Marcello as all three want to corner the drug market as well as want the others dead or at least out of town…but I think death on one another is truly what is in their hearts. While Mr. Marcello and Mr. Yu are normal men, Lord Pumpkin is a true evil demon who while has love in his sinister heart for some does seem to be enjoying all the death, misery and abuse that this is causing. Sludge in this issue is really suffering mentally as his brain is truly turning into mush and he is having a real hard time dealing with it, while he tries to be a hero saving a woman from drowning his touch causes her pain and he even tries to kill himself but fails, and now he finds himself in a team up with the very evil Lord Pumpkin to try and end his life. Bloodstorm being added back into the series was a wise choice as he is the one villain who has really be able to hurt Sludge, as this far all others who have crossed him have meet a quick death. The other great part of this issue is showing that while Lord Pumpkin is a demon, he still has emotions as he was in love with Tabitha a woman he had working for him, and with her death now we understand why this crime war is going to turn deadly very fast. And if the killings in the graveyard is a preview of what is to come during this war many people are going to die. The cover is cool and once more has a very indie Horror Comic look to it and yep like we have seen many issues before this one Lopresti did the interior artwork. Over all another great issue that helps push this series story along as with each issue showcases the mental breakdown of Sludge and builds to the baddies of the city getting ready for a showdown.

Sludge Comic 7

Sludge # 7  ***
Released in 1994     Cover Price $1.95     Malibu Comics     # 6 of 12

Sludge is having a nightmare about Edna, the woman he was in love with when he was human, and in his dream he touches her and her skin turns to tumors and she dies as the evil Lord Pumpkin mocks him…but this time even when he awakes he sees the twisted face of Edna as his denigrating mind is playing tricks on him. At the cemetery reporter Shelley Rogers arrives as the cops are removing the bodies and meets Detective Quinn who refuses to answer any questions but she also meets Agnes who works for the Medical Examiners office and says after the autopsies she might be able to help Sheeley with her questions and story, this does not make Quinn happy. Meanwhile Lord Pumpkin has sent Pistol out to hire a lawyer, while Mr. Marcello is very much stressed over the cemetery attack and the sight of Lord Pumpkin himself and is skittish and thinks his own men are out to backstab him. While Lord Pumpkin is in a great mood and even gives Pistol a bigger cut on the sale of Zuke the drug they are offering, while Mr. Yu’s men are looking at how to duplicate Zuke so they can sell it themselves and later team with Mr. Marcello’s men to crack the code. Lord Pumpkin has created a new version of Zuke from the plant and is selling it cheap on the streets and this new drug is turning some of those who take it into psychos who feel no pain, and Sludge has to deal with one after the crazy kid kills a police officer. Later Bloodstorm gets hired by Mr. Marcello’s right hand man to kill Lord Pumpkin as Sludge is given the order to kill Mr. Marcello…and Sludge does just that as he touches the crime lords face causing it to be covered in tumors, and then the crime boss falls out of a window from his high rise building.

Well it looks like Mr. Marcello is no longer the leader of his crime family as he has splatted on the sidewalk below his penthouse home, and it looks like it will be Vittorio that takes over the operation as he is already setting in motion to try and work with his rivals, kill Lord Pumpkin and learn the secrets of the street drug Zuke. While on the other side it appears that Mr. Yu was injured in the cemetery attack and is also willing to work alongside his enemies to bring down the bigger threat to them both. While Lord Pumpkin is creating more drugs that appear make some people go crazy, is building up the trust of young Pistol, is getting legal eagles on his payroll and orders for the death of Mr. Marcello that is carried out by Sludge who finally gets his revenge on the man who gave the orders to end his human life and turn him into the muck monster he is. Sludge is really starting to lose it as his mind is playing tricks on him and he is even forgetting words now more often, it’s sad that he has to take orders from Lord Pumpkin in order to truly try and end his life. And with Bloodstorm now being called in to kill Lord Pumpkin you know that the action is going to heat up, as this hired assassin will not stop until his target is dead. Pistol, who is very young, is getting his mind warped by Lord Pumpkin as the youngster is starting to crave violence and power. I am going to say yet again that the interior art is done by Lopresti and is well done, and the cover for this issue is really cool and has Sludge going on a rampage. So with Sludge now truly being a henchman for the demon Lord Pumpkin truly shows just how confused our hero is as he is stopping criminals while working for one! So with that, let’s see what issue eight brings to our story.

Sludge Comic 8

Sludge # 8  ***
Released in 1994     Cover Price $1.95     Malibu Comics     # 8 of 12

The New York local TV News is covering the drug wars that is happing in the streets. They cover the death of Mr. Marcello as well as Zuke being sold in a cheap version on the streets that is turning some users into killers. Sludge is watching the news and has a weird vision of he and his ex-lover Edna eating dinner over a trash barrel, and when he snaps out of it he finds that he is just in a janitor room watching a TV and escapes back into the sewer as the worker returns. While at the cemetery during the funeral of Mr. Marcello, Vittorio learns that the others in the crime family want him to step up and take over, but he needs to bring down both Lord Pumpkin and Sludge! And Vittorio makes the call and hires Bloodstorm to kill them both, while Lord Pumpkin has a spy that over hears the hit and warns the demon who in turn calls on Sludge to help in the coming battle. While at the hospital Mr. Yu’s men take the survivor from the boat explosion out of there as they don’t want her to squeal on them. And while all this is going on Shelley Rogers is looking deeper into these drug killings, Zuke rages and the disfiguring deaths and Detective Quinn is now being asked by Mr. Yu’s group to spy on Vittorio’s group as they do not want to be double crossed. Bloodstorm has arrived and takes out some thugs and Rivermen along his way of getting to Lord Pumpkin, but the assassin is no match as he is blasted by Pumpkin’s demonic blast, shot in the hand by Pistol and then force to eat a ton of Zuke as Sludge makes his mouth cover over with tumors. As Bloodstorm is in pain and drugged up something odd happens as the Zuke that Sludge touched has made his hand human again! And during all this some of Yu’s doctors on staff are operating on the young woman who survived the boat explosion and they took from the hospital.

All Hell is breaking loose in New York as this crime war is getting out of hand and all three crime families are jockeying for that top position and each have their own slimy ways to try and achieve it. Mr. Yu and his men are playing it more quite and sending spies to watch what the others are doing, while they themselves are trying to crack the secrets of Zuke as well as are clearly doing something very bad to the young woman they took from the hospital. Vittorio finds himself in charge now that his boss is dead and buried and must do what he can to get the respect of the men who are shook by the death of their leader as well as the number of losses they have suffered on their side. Lord Pumpkin is kind of a sick puppet master during all this as he knows what each of his opposing sides are up to and almost loves the lack of a challenge they truly are to his power. Pistol is young and so willing to kill for Pumpkin who clearly is controlling the youngsters mind, and while I think Pumpkin likes him he would send him to die if it would further his game for power. Bloodstorm, who is a master assassin, soon finds that he was not ready to fight a demon and by the end of the issue is near death’s door! While Detective Quinn is playing all sides minus that of Pumpkin and reporter Shelley Rogers is getting so close to figuring out what is going on in the biggest story of her life. Sludge once more is just taking orders as he wants to die, but now that he sees that Zuke might be able to turn him human again…his wish for death just might change as being cured of this mucky curse might be the new agenda for him. This gang war story is lots of fun and reminds me of the Spider-Man story arch called “Gang War” that feature Kingpin, Hammerhead, The Rose and other super baddies at war with each other in New York…if you have not read this story, you should do so it’s a fun read. I am shocked just how easy Bloodstorm was defeated, but to be fair, the odds were very much against him. And the shocking cliffhanger ending of Sludge’s hand turning human adds even more drama to his sad story and makes you really want to read the next issue to find out how this plays out! Oh before we do move onto issue nine, I should say this cover is really cool as is shows both Sludge and Bloodstorm.

Sludge Comic 9

Sludge # 9  ***
Released in 1994     Cover Price $1.95     Malibu Comics     # 9 of 12

Lord Pumpkin has cleared the tumors away from Bloodstorm’s mouth and pumps him full of Zuke, and as the assassin starts to rage Pumpkin puts him to sleep. As a confused Sludge and Pistol look on Lord Pumpkin says that Bloodstorm has a use and must do a job for him that is why he did not let them kill him. Sludge takes Bloodstorm to the base of Vittorio and lets him loose as the madman now on Zuke opens fire and kills many more of that crime family, but finally Bloodstorm is gunned down and from his body Zuke gas escapes the bullet holes and chokes everyone in the room with its foul smell. Detective Quinn witnessed that massacre and runs from the scene to look for protection from Mr. Yu, but unknown to him, Shelley Rogers has hidden in his back seat and knows the officer’s dirty little secrets. While she’s listening to Mr. Yu telling Quinn they are working on a weapon that will help in this war, a Riverman appears and takes Shelley away to Lord Pumpkin’s hideout. Meanwhile Mr. Yu and his crime network unload an attack on Pumpkins pushers, sellers, customers and fiends. Lord Pumpkin’s operation is weakened and he once more calls of Sludge to help he and Pistol against the coming weapon that is being sent by Mr. Yu, with the promise being this is the final favor and he will be granted death or more Zuke to turn him normal again! Back at the lab the young woman has been turned into a cyborg and is a killing machine, Mr. Yu has her kill Detective Quinn before heading to the hideout of Lord Pumpkin were she makes short work of some of his men. Once inside she fights off both Pistol and Sludge and ends up “killing” Lord Pumpkin, with her mission complete the Cyborg sets herself to self-destruct, Sludge frees Shelley, and she and Pistol who is holding the head of Lord Pumpkin escape while Sludge grabs some Zuke before making his exit. After the explosion and the dust is settle several days later Pistol is holding and protecting the rotten head of Lord Pumpkin, before finally given up on his bosses return and placing the head into a trashcan.

The Gang War is finally over and so much has happened and changed and only one crime family is still standing tall after all the blood is spilt and the dust has settled and that is Mr. Yu’s who played a smart game and is able to create a Cyborg that brings an end to Lord Pumpkin for now. Mr. Yu seen weakness and took his shot and it paid off big time as he was able to give the orders that lead to him being the biggest crime lord in New York. While on the other side Vittorio and his family come off weak as their original boss is dead and he allows an attack at one of their own bases to happen that leaves many of his higher ups dead! Vittorio has lost the respect and fear that would have allowed his crime family to stay at the top of the crime food chain in New York. Meanwhile Lord Pumpkin’s own ego leads to his defeat as he thinking is was to powerful and bragging about it is what lead to his candle being snuffed out and his life for now ending, he leaves Pistol without a boss and lost on the streets as his own head rots in a nasty trashcan. Detective Quinn who is a no good cop meets his end by playing both sides as he was a narc for both Yu and Vittorio. Plus he was a trying to play a good cop on TV to save face. Poor Shelley Rogers gets abducted and forced to take Zuke for trying to crack the story of the crime war, but in the end she at least escapes with her life. Sludge who got a quick taste of the cure is now seeing a ghost version of his ex-girlfriend, is questioning if he wants death or life and finds himself used as a pawn in this gang war with his best interest never being taken to heart. This Gang War or Zuke War was such a great story arch in these Sludge Comics and some many characters played a part in this story with many of them meeting their fates by the conclusion, and so far can’t you readers see why Sludge was one of my favorites from the Ultraverse? The stories are very fun and the issues have monster fights, crime drama and even a hero that has issues that go very deep. The cover for this issue is cool and has Sludge fighting Lord Pumpkin as the cover reminds me of something you would have seen on an issue of The Incredible Hulk! And the interior artwork this time around is done by Robb Phipps, and his style is good and very fitting for the Ultraverse at this time. Over all another great issue that has held up to the sands of time for this blogger.

Sludge Comic 10

Sludge # 10  ***
Released in 1994     Cover Price $1.95     Malibu Comics     # 10 of 12

Sludge is in the sewer and takes the Zuke and it has no effect on him, his dreams of being back human are shattered. Meanwhile on the streets of New York weirdo Vinaigrette and her weird bird creature Organism 0.9B are running wild and causing issues for the cops, and when Sludge comes out of the sewer to try and help he is shot by an officer and this cause Zuke fumes to leak from his body and make our muck hero dizzy and as he returns to his sewer home he passes out. When he wakes up the next morning he is more human than before, can speak clearly and his head and thoughts are not mush! He heads up to the streets and gets some clothes and starts walking among the normal people again, and he heads to his apartment home only to find that a new couple lives their and the male armed with a baseball bat attacks Sludge to protect his home and lady! Sludge ends up getting away and finds the home of Shelley Rogers and fills her in on the whole story for a place to sleep and some food to eat, Shelley meanwhile hits the streets and starts to uncover the trail that will lead to finding out what the toxic waste was that turned Hoag into Sludge. The lead takes Shelley and Sludge to Pennsylvania to meet Dr. Ferdinand LaLama who worked at the lab and created a chemical that would re-grow damaged skin…the waste that was split on Hoag when he was shot and killed. At the clinic of Dr. LaLama they find it rundown, and after forcing his way in Sludge is attacked by Vinaigrette and her giant weird ride able bird friend Organism 0.9B who think Sludge is a threat for breaking down the door, and worse moments later Sludge finds that two hulking freaks called The Bash Brothers are joining the fight.

In this issue Sludge thanks to the power of the street drug Zuke has turned some what back to human and wants to find a full cure for his mucky curse, and is able to blend in with the right clothes and seeks out the help of reporter Shelley Rogers to find out what toxic chemical spilled on him and turned him into a monster and the person that created it! And of course nothing can be easy for Sludge as he finds himself being attacked by other strange powered and looking people that appear to be connected to the same man who might have indirectly been responsible for his own creation. Sludge while more human like still is super strong and seems to not be able to be fully hurt, while he does have aches and some pain now when it comes to combat. His mind and voice are clear and his one goal is to find a way to make himself back into just normal old Detective Hoag. Shelley Rogers is getting the story of a lifetime and it’s clear at this point that she has a friendship with Sludge and is willing to help him in his quest for answers. Vinaigrette and Organism 0.9B are very strange as Vinaigrette seems to sweating a slick oil like substance that makes her hard to grab onto while Organism 0.9B is a big silly looking bird who uses it’s head like a battling ram, while they were causing issues in New York I do not think they are baddies, and the same goes for The Bash Brothers who we do not get to see in action in this issue. Dr. Ferdinand LaLama is the man behind the toxic chemical and by the looks of it is also the keeper of the “freaks” it has created. While I am a fan of the classic muck monster Sludge, this more quick thinking version is a fun change of pace and is making for a good story of who and why he was created. And for some reason when reading this issue again I was getting Basket Case 2 vibes, if you have not seen the film its about a house of odd, strange and freaks living together in a home being cared for by a doctor. The cover for this issue is odd and yet catches your attention and for this issues interiors, Robb Phipps returns and does a great job, as clearly he likes to draw the ladies. With that let’s see what issue eleven has in store for us and if Sludge will get what he seeks from the mysterious Dr. LaLama.

Sludge Comic 11

Sludge # 11  **1/2
Released in 1994     Cover Price $1.95     Malibu Comics     # 11 of 12

The Bash Brothers end up beating up on Sludge and knock him out for a brief moment, and that attack stops when Shelley informs them that they can to seek help, and once the Brothers take a look at Sludge’s face that is now starting to burn drippy and gooey again they see that they were wrong to attack and inform the two that Dr. LaLama is away and has been for some days now and none of them have heard from him for a week! So The Bash Brothers, Organism 0.9B and Vinaigrette join Sludge and Shelley on their hunt for the now considered missing Doctor, and the ride back to New York Vinaigrette tells them all about a Dr. Gross who is the one that made her the way she is, and how he is a very bad man. Once in the city Vinaigrette and Organism 0.9B break away from the group to get money, while the rest find a portal opened in the city land of Dr. LaLama and when they all enter it they find themselves in a weird world, but they do find Dr. LaLama! To return home The Bash Brothers and Sludge must stand on each others shoulders so Shelley can climb up them and get back through the portal to drop down a rope, and when she makes it up, weird water creatures bellow attack our heroes! They are able to fight off the water creatures and climb the rope and return to the lab where Sludge is starting to turn back into the muck monster so he quickly asks Dr. LaLama about the chemical he made that turned him into this monster. Dr. LaLama informs him that the chemical was created to heal damaged skin, and when he was shot an dumped in the sewer the chemical bonded his flesh and bone with that of the sewage, and he informs him that without the Zuke samples he can not help him…Sludge who is turning back into the creature leaves the lab to return to the sewers a defeated man.

In this issue Sludge who is starting to turn back into the muck monster goes to another world to find the missing scientist Dr. LaLama who is the one person who might be able to help cure him or at least give him the answers he seeks…but instead all he finds in disappointment and a one way ticket into turning fully back into Sludge! While the issue is fun and the plot moves the story along as we find out that the chemical was not toxic, but was a way to help injured people that just went wrong for Detective Hoag when his body was dumped in the sewer, I also feel that it was the one this far that kind of dragged and that was mostly do to the uninteresting characters called The Bash Brothers who ramble on with their smart talk and just kind of are dorks. The Bash Brothers are around way to much of this comic an take away from Sludge and his story, plus I just think that once Sludge left the home of Dr. LaLama to find him in the lab back in New York the only person with him should have been Shelley Rogers and not the rest of the weirdoes. I think with the Gang War being over and no appearances of other monster for Sludge to fight the pace of the comic just kind of stalls as his fights in this issue or so brief. While this issue for me is a little slow, we at least do get a little look into what the chemical was that made him as well as now see that he is turning back into the monster hero we all love. The cover for this issue is great and has Sludge’s face being it on both sides by the fists of The Bash Brothers and the interior artwork is once more done by artist Robb Phipps and is solid great work. Not much to say about this issue besides it’s the weakest issue in the series that does help give a little look into the sad life of Sludge who just wants to be normal again or at least find peace in death.

Sludge Comic 12

Sludge # 12  ***
Released in 1994     Cover Price $3.50     Malibu Comics     # 12 of 12

A witch and her demon friend Phleeb have casted a spell and have Sludge under hero command, and as this event happens teenager Michael Green wakes up from a bad dream that was about Sludge’s cursed possession and this causes him to turn into the Ultra Hero Prime to go and investigate. The Witch orders Sludge to go to the museum and steal a stone tablet as if he joins that half they have with the half he has a smell can be done that will free the Witch’s son from another dimension and together they will take over the world. And with orders given the entranced Sludge makes his way to his mission and breaks in and gets the tablet, but Prime arrives on the scene and starts a fist fight with Sludge and for a brief moment Sludge snaps out of the mind control but quickly falls back under as the Witch uses her powers to do so as well as weaken Prime! The fight ends as Prime is getting weaker and Sludge makes it back to the Witch and she starts working on the spell to bring back her son as Prime recovers after many hours and goes back on the hunt for Sludge to finish their fight. Prime goes to the sewer and once Sludge appears the two start fighting with Prime being the one kicking butt, the Witch is bale to bring her son back who turns out to be a giant and he by accident crushes his own mom to death and this breaks the spell she had on Sludge who tries to stop the fight but is punched really hard and knocked out by Prime who gets out of the sewer and finds the city is being attacked by Demons! As Prime is fighting demons above ground Sludge wakes up and starts fighting them in the sewers before finding the witches body and then breaking apart the stone tablet sending all the demons back into their dimension. Prime and Sludge meet again in the witch’s lab and part ways once they figure out that neither have the answers on what just happened and why Prime is drawn to Sludge who wanders off back into the dark sewer tunnels.

And with this issue so ends Sludge is his own solo series and while this issue kind of just ends and the character just gets no breaks as this time around and old witch mind controls him to steal a tablet from a museum in order to bring her son and his demonic friends back from another dimension, but all this causes is for the witch to be crushed to death and for Sludge to get into a big fist fight with Prime, who is the strongest of the UltraHeroes. So the quest to be cured must be over for Sludge as he seems to not like it but has came to terms with the fact that he will be a muck monster from here on, but most of the issue he finds himself under mind control and only in the last few pages is he able to talk to Prime and clear his name. Speaking of Prime he was a nice guest star as he is able to slug it out with Sludge as well as the freed demons, plus his skin does not grow tumors when touching Sludge making him the hardest opponent that our muck hero has ever fought. And the side story of Prime for some reason being drawn to Sludge and as well kind of loosing control of turning form normal teenager Michael Green to the massive hero, and sadly in this series we are left on that cliffhanger and we never do get any answers. Sludge throughout this series goes from being a human cop named Hoag, to being murdered and covered in a toxic chemical, to having his body dumped in a sewer, to turning into a muck monster called Sludge, is in involved in a gang war, wants to die to wanting to be cured, fights monsters and so much more in-between! While this issue is a fun read I do also have to say that it is kind of a letdown when it comes to being a final issue as it seems like its more of a set up from a Prime story than a finish for the Sludge story. The cover for this issue is cool and has Sludge and Prime fighting it out, the interior artist on this final issue was done by Aaron Lopresti and it is nice to see him return to finish the series. I should also say that for the final villain for Sludge to fight with in his series being The Old Witch is also kind of a letdown as she is creepy and powerful and all, but is also very silly and dies at the feet of her own large demon child…I would have rather seen him tangle with Mr. Yu and his men or even a crazed madman on Zuke! But while this was the final issue in the Sludge main series we have one Christmas Special still to go, so our look at Sludge is not over yet!

Sludge Red X-Mas Comic 1

Sludge Red X-Mas # 1  ***
Released in 1994    Cover Price $2.50     Malibu Comics     # 1 of 1

It’s Thanksgiving and Sludge is in the sewer with a muddled mind and is annoyed that heroes like Hardcase have floats in the parade, while people just fear him. While on the street Pistol stops a purse thief Shifty and almost gets a reword from the woman as he returns it, as Shifty gets arrested Pistol heads to a strip club to try and get work from it’s owner Cornwell to do collections…but no jobs are going on during the holidays. Sludge stops a criminal from beating a woman to death with a crowbar as the woman he saves is the lawyer that Lord Pumpkin hired when he was alive and running the streets of New York. While Pistol is watching after some of the homeless people who are being bullied as well as running small jobs to get cash for them all to eat. Meanwhile Shifty has placed a hit on the officer that arrested him for the purse theft, and Pistol ends up talking to Sludge and tells him that Zuke was from the same place Lord Pumpkin was from and then stops Shifty from shooting the police officer! Pistol makes it in the newspaper for being a hero but will not give his real name, but his father Mack a man leading a city wide strike is a scum bag who use to beat Pistol and his mother and now he wants his son dead before he can talk and tell his dirty secrets. Pistol gets kidnapped and the officer as well as the female lawyer get shot and hurt during the abduction. Sludge stops the attackers and even roughs up Pistol’s dad who was going to kill his own son, later Pistol along with his crazy homeless friends, the cop and the lawyer lady are all hanging out in a ally opening gifts as Pistol to himself sends a silent thank you to Sludge for saving his life.

For me this is the better way to end Sludge and should have been the final issue in the main series instead of a special issue as I feel we get a slightly better ending for Sludge as he is a hero and even helps turn a criminal onto a path of doing the right thing. The plot has young Pistol wondering the streets looking for work from the loan sharks, but he is also stopping others from doing petty crimes like purse snatching and bulling. But he becomes a hero when he stops an assassination attempt on a police officer, but this new fame brings Pistol’s abusive father out of the dark who is trying to lead a government strike and who wants his son’s life taken so that his past does not leak out, but thanks to Sludge this does not happen and Pistol finds himself on a good path and friends with the officer he saved. It is really cool to see the character of Pistol grow as he turns from a lackey of Lord Pumpkin who would steal and kill on his boss’s orders, but once away from the demonic pumpkin he finds the hold broken and him choosing to do the right thing. Sludge is back in the sewer with visions of his ex-girlfriend in his muddled head, and still helping the innocent from those trying to cause them harm. The sad thing for Sludge is that during the holidays he himself spends alone in the sewers, as it would have been nice to see him spending time with Shelley Rogers or even his homeless friends. Christmas Comics are lots of fun and I am glad to see Sludge get involved and have one as growing up I remember reading Holiday issues of Hulk, Spider-Man, Batman and Superman. And I am shocked on just how well the whole Sludge comic series held up for me as I still find the character interesting as well as his issues being entertaining and keeping the story moving along, and a major plus being that it barely had the crossover annoyance that plagued so many of the UltraVerse titles were they would force you to buy other characters issues in order to finish a story arch. The cover for this issue is a lot of fun as it has Pistol and Sludge who has a wreath around his neck standing in the snow. The interior artwork this time around is done by Mike Ploog and is great stuff as Ploog does a great job of drawing Sludge. Over all this X-Mas Special and the whole series is a very great Indie Superhero Comic reads and I feel Sludge just like Rune was Malibu Comics way of bringing in Horror themed characters to their UltraVerse universe. And have to say that if you have not read Sludge you should check it out! Take a look at the artwork below to see the style used throughout this comic series.

Sludge is such a cool indie superhero and is one that I wish was still around, as I really do not understand why Marvel Comics have never did anything with him or any other Ultraverse character they own. As I truly think Sludge would make a great character in the Incredible Hulk series as well as it would have been cool to see him battle with the likes of Man-Thing! But we all know that the Disney owned Marvel Comics at this point will never bring the characters back as they are so lazy even with their creative stories for their own big heroes and characters, let alone they lack the creative minds to bring the characters into the Marvel Universe or even bring the UltraVerse back in general…or maybe it’s Disney to blame…who knows. But our time with Sludge has come to an end and our next update will take us to the world of Sci-Fi Horror as we talking about the film “The Man From Planet X” and the comic book adaptation of it! So until next time, read a comic or three, watch a film or two and as always support your local Horror Host. I hope The Man From Planet X comes in peace!

Marvel Horror Showcase – The Zombie Simon Garth

Marvel Horror was a gateway for me to the world of Horror Comics. As I have stated before the likes of Werewolf By Night, Man-Thing and Tomb Of Dracula all were comics I would read late nights in my nearly darkened room. One of my favorite past times was reading a Marvel Horror comic as it rained or a thunderstorm raged outside. I would grab an issue I had not read and listened to the storm as I read the eerie story that unfolded on the pages. But one classic Marvel Horror Monster that seems to not get as much respect as he should is Simon Garth, also known as The Zombie who was the main character in Marvel Horror Magazine “Tales Of The Zombie”! So I feel it’s my duty as a comic reader to bring you an update that is long overdue and one in my “Marvel Horror Showcase” themed updates based on Simon Garth The Zombie. So sit back and enjoy this spooky and yet heroic update.

Simon Garth was a mean businessman who treated everyone near him badly as he felt they were below him and his successful ways. One day he made the mistake of his life when his behavior and snooty ways lead to him firing his gardener, and this sparks his former employee to snap and kidnap Garth and stab him to death near the swamps of New Orleans! Once dead he takes the body and forces a Voodoo Queen (who happens to also work for Garth) to turn him into a mindless zombie that can be controlled with two necklaces that are worn by the zombie and the one who wants to control him. The gardener filled with a new sense of power uses the Zombie to do his will, but soon finds that even the undead can fight back when a line is crossed and he was commanded to kidnap his own daughter and instead fights the order and kills his master! For a while The Zombie wandered the Earth with many people controlling him when they got the amulet necklace, and at one point the necklace went missing and he roamed around until he could get it back and that was only after having a run in with Spider-Man. Sometime later the amulet landed in the hands of vampire Lilith Drake, and this time around Zombie had to team up with Spider-Man to get it back, and once they get it back Zombie returned to his slumber for years. His body would be found and taken to a morgue where he would once more rise and this time took a corpse bride before returning to his slumber. The Zombie would later be recruited to be a member of the supernatural team “ The Howling Commandos” alongside other Marvel Horror characters like Man-Thing, The Living Mummy, Golem and Frankenstein’s Monster. The Zombie would rise from time to time, and his most recent appearance came in 2018 that is the issue we will be reviewing shortly. As you can see, while Zombie is not a major character in the Marvel Universe he is one that is well loved by us readers who have always enjoyed the dark world of Marvel Horror.

Tales Of The Zombie started in 1973 and was a Horror Magazine that was created by Roy Thomas for Marvel Monster Group, and the character Zombie was taken from the 1953 Atlas Comic Menace # 5 with the character being created by Stan Lee. You see, in the 70’s Horror Comics became big money as the Comic Code Authority had become more relaxed and allowed werewolves, zombies, vampires and ghouls back in comics and violence and blood could also be added. The series lasted for 10 issues and had one Annual, and along with original stories, each magazine also had reprints of classic horror comics as well as showcased some other characters from their horror line like Brother Voodoo. Tales Of The Zombie came to an end in 1975 ending his spooky ride for a time, but like any good zombie, you can’t keep him down. Simon Garth The Zombie would return and make appearances in such Marvel Comics as Daredevil, Spider-Man, S.H.E.I.L.D., Deadpool and Marvel Zombies to name a few. Even in 2008 for the Marvel Max line, The Zombie once more had a mini series that lasted four issues and entertained readers who enjoy this character. His most recent comic appearance was in 2018 with Marvel Zombie a one shot issue that brought him into the world of an alternate Marvel Zombies universe. Who knows what Marvel has in store for the future of Zombie, and one wonders if he ever will get his own series or mini series ever again…and this even makes one wonder if he ever will make an appearance in a Marvel Movie Universe or TV show! One thing for sure, if you have never read a comic book featuring Zombie, I would say do yourself a favor and get an issue or two and give them a read.

Over the years Marvel Comics has dusted off the Zombie when someone working for them had a great idea for him, and this made his fans very happy! And one cool thing that happened in the world of Marvel in 2018 was when they released a One Shot issue of Zombie and set it in a world of gloom and doom, and this is the comic we are going to review for this Marvel Horror update as I stated earlier. I want to thank Bell, Book And Comic for having this copy in stock. I want to remind you readers that I am grading this comic on a star scale of 1 to 4 and am looking for how well the comic stays to the source material, its entertainment value and its art and story. So if you are ready to walk on the undead dark side of Marvel, let’s take a look at Zombie!

Marvel Zombie # 1  ***
Released in 2018     Cover Price $4.99     Marvel Comics     # 1 of 1

The Marvel Universe is in bad shape as a plague has infected the world and has caused most of the population to turn into bloodthirsty zombies. Simon Garth is wandering the decayed world enjoying his undead life, some humans still remain and are protected by The Defenders that are Daredevil, Spider-Man, Black Widow, Moon Girl, Devil Dinosaur 2.0, Hawkeye and Misty Knight who fight off the zombie horde. While the heroes battle the horde, young Donny finds a necklace and puts it on and during the fight he falls and is about to be eaten alive by zombies when all looks dark he is saved by Simon Garth and the pair start up a friendship. The heroes return to base and Moon Girl has figured out a way to use a bomb to dispose of a large section of the zombie horde. When Donny returns to base with Simon at first the heroes were going to kill the zombie until he proves he is different and a hero like them, but then things turn bad again when they want to use him to wear the bomb and become their suicide bomber! Falcon is another hero that is still alive and he returns to base with news that a massive horde is on the way and that they need to act soon, and this sets the suicide bomber plan into action. Donny is upset by the decision that Daredevil made to send his friend on a death mission. When the time comes Donny talks to Moon Girl about the original Devil Dinosaur and compares their friendship to his friendship with Simon and this causes Moon Girl to take the bomb off him and The Defenders die when they are swarmed waiting for the suicide bomber to appear. In the end with the heroes gone, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur 2.0 go their own way as do Donny and Simon Garth.

This was a great read, and I read this comic in the middle of a cemetery on a chilly day with my car windows down. The plot of this comic has the world being overrun by zombies with only a small amount of people and heroes left alive. And when a young boy finds the necklaces of Simon Garth, he controls the zombie and he chooses friendship over the fate of the world. Donny is the main character of this comic, and while he is a youngster he has lived his whole life in a world filled with flesh eating zombies, and when he befriends one he chooses to save the life of one undead creature to the masses as he allows all the rest of the worlds superheroes to be eaten alive. Think about that… Donny allows the world’s only hope to survive to be killed in order to have a “friend”…. Simon Garth is a zombie with a mind who is living in a world filled with zombies who only want to feed and kill. He is a good soul who protects those who has his necklace. Daredevil is the leader of The Defenders and with his crew of heroes, he thinks that there is a hope to save the world, and sadly his master plan backfires due to a young kid’s selfishness and leads to his own death as well as that of all his fellow heroes. What works the best for this issue is the fact is a self-contained issue and has a “Marvel Zombies” meets “What If?” feel to it. I like the aspect of Simon wandering the world filled with other zombies that he has nothing in common with and is almost super thankful when the young kid finds the necklace that controls and bonds with him. The comic does have some blood and violence and proves that Marvel still knows how to do Horror. The cover I have is amazing and very eye catching, and the interior art is top notch and done by Stefano Raffaele. If you like classic Marvel Horror characters, make sure to check this out as it’s a great read. Check out the art below to see the style of Raffaele and see how Simon Garth looks like in this issue.

This one shot Marvel Zombie issue to me proves that they as a company should do this more often! Why not make a one shot issue based on Tomb Of Dracula, Werewolf By Night, Living Mummy, The Golem and Man-Thing to introduce the classic Marvel Horror characters to new readers as well as deliver something new to their long time fans. I truly do think they should make these type of comics a Halloween season tradition. They should also use Simon Garth the Zombie more often in the regular Marvel Universe. For our next update, we will be walking away from Horror and will once more be stepping into the wrestling ring as we take a look at GLOW wrestler Sunny! So until next update, read a comic or three, watch a movie or two and as always support your local Horror Host! Get ready for the original wrestling Sunny days next update so I will see you then.

From Horror Movie To Horror Comic: The Dark (1993)

Cemeteries and small towns are packed with legends and tall tales of monsters and ghosts.  Around here in Dayton, Ohio I have heard my fair share of these stories and for our 3rd countdown to Halloween, we will be taking a look at a movie and comic that has a monster in the cemetery and is another in our “From Horror Movie To Horror Comic” updates.  I am talking about the 1993 film The Dark and the Norstar Comic based on it! During the early 90’s, horror was still going strong; the direct to video market was still very healthy as video rental stores were on almost every corner, and the youth were still very much into films with monsters, killers and supernatural beings. This film was on many video rental shelves and was watched by many monster kids of the 90s late on weekend nights. So let’s go to the cemetery and enter the tunnels as we take a look at The Dark, and the weird creature that lives in it.

We first must understand this comic and film’s monster, a hairy creature, in order to truly understand the horrors we are about to face. The creature in this film is called a Allotheria and is massive in size and has sharp claws and a very large head that supports teeth much like a dog mixed with a rat.  It makes its home in a cemetery as its main source of food is freshly dead buried bodies. The creature has lots of tunnels under the ground and seems to just attack when it feels its life is in danger or if you so happen to enter its cave. Not much is known what the creature is – some say it was an unknown species while it’s also hinted that it could be alien in nature, and this causes it to be wanted dead and alive by the government and its agents. The creature’s main means to kill is its sharp claws and teeth that it is able to use to shred human flesh.  It also can move pretty fast and can uses its tunnels to stalk its attended victim. Its main defense for  is a grey goo that is like blood and seems to heal wounds causing it to be harder to kill. The weakness of this creature is that while it can be a killing machine, it only attacks when provoked and this could leave it open for attacks. While the grey goo can heal most wounds, it does not protect from severe damage like multiple gunshots, and this can lead to the creature’s death. So this creature might not be the most powerful or most dangerous killers we have covered on one of our From Horror Movie To Horror Comic updates, but one thing is for sure, he could make any of us normal humans into bloody shredded cheese.

So as you can see, this dead human-meat eating creature just wants to be left alone and has the gruesome jaws and claws to make sure that he gets the peace he wants. But now that we have chatted about this killer creature we should now take a look at the movie it’s from and as always we will be taking the film’s write up from our friends at IMDB and after I will chat about the film’s production as well as my first time seeing it. So let’s go further underground and see what we can dig up on The Dark.

The Dark (1993)

“Something is alive beneath the surface of the graveyard. Something with the power to destroy and the power to heal. One man, a cop, is determined to kill this mysterious creature. Another, a scientist, is determined to capture and save this miraculous being. Stalking the creature in it’s subterranean habitat, neither man is aware of the battle they are about to start. A battle for science, survival and revenge.”

The Dark was released direct to video in 1993 and was produced by Lightshow Communications and had a theatrical release in Canada in 1994. The film was low budget and was directed by Craig Pryce who also directed episodes of “PSI Factor: Chronicles Of The Paranormal”, “Are You Afraid Of The Dark” and “Goosebumps” and stars such actors as Brion James, Stephen McHattie, Cynthia Belliveau and is the first movie role of Neve Campbell! The film is one that was met with mix reviews and over the years has gained a very small following among diehard 90s horror fans. Not much is out in the world wide web about the making of this film as it was one that came and went and was lost in the shuffle of horror films released in 1993 as these films over shadowed it Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday, Leprechaun, Return Of The Living Dead 3, Body Bags, Warlock: The Armageddon, Puppet Master 4, Maniac Cop 3 and Bloodstone: Subspecies II to name a few.

I first saw this film in August of this year and learned about it thanks to the Norstar Comic book that Pete of Bell, Book And Comic held back for me from a buy he did so that I could cover it here on Rotten Ink. So after digging around on Amazon, I found a VHS copy of the film and sadly when it showed up it was crushed and not in playing order so I had to send it back and ended up getting the film on DVD with the refunded money. Once I watched the film for the first time, I found it to be a fun monster flick that had a cool creature and an okay and simple story with cheesy lines and an ending that leaves it open for a sequel. I liked the setting mostly being a cemetery and that Neve Campbell played a young cop as she gave the film a edge as she does a good job on what little she is given. The disappointment of the film is that the monster is not shown as much as I wanted and in fact he does not seem like the biggest threat of the film as a rogue FBI Agent is clearly the more dangerous threat to our heroes. Over all while not an amazing independent horror film, it still was a fun one to watch on a boring day. You can find this film on DVD and VHS if you want to watch a film about a grey goo spewing, dead flesh eating, underground living creature who is wanted dead and alive by rival enemies.

So The Dark, as you can see, is a direct to video film from 1993 that features an underground creature, and while not a household name, it did get the comic book treatment and that to me is very cool as I think that many independent horror films should be doing this. Imagine comics based on films like Redsin Tower from Toe Tag or Babysitter Massacre from E.I. Entertainment getting their own comic books. So we are here deep in this tunnel under this cemetery, and as I look for a place to sit and read this comic, I want to thank Bell, Book And Comic for getting me this comic and scratched in the wall made of mud is this “I grade these on a star scale of 1 to 4 and am looking for how well the comic stays to the source material, its entertainment value and its art and story”! So I think the Creature wanted me to remind you all about this, so let’s sit back and prepare to be scared as we come face to face with The Dark!

The Dark # 1  **1/2
Released in 1993     Cover Price .80     Norstar Comics     # 1 of 1

Jake and Ed are digging a grave at the cemetery they work for when they witness a tombstone drop into the ground and Jake’s leg falls into a hole in the ground that is really a tunnel and Ed is able to get him free right before a creature is able to grab him. The cops are called to look into the tunnel and while searching it one cop is left dead as the gravediggers and female officer Jessie are greeted by Hunter and Tanya who warn them not to touch the black ooze that was left behind after the attack as he is here to capture the creature that made the tunnels and killed the cop. But as they are chatting, former FBI Agent Buckner shows up and locks all of them in a work shed besides Jake who he takes hostage and tosses in the tunnel as bait as he wants to kill this creature due to the fact the creature killed his partner years ago. Hunter and his crew escape the shed and he has a plan to bury himself in order to get the creature’s attention and try to capture it. And on this cliffhanger is how this issue ends with the question being what will the creature do.

This is a solid promo comic that gives you a taste of what to expect in the film and delivers good quick character development as well as a few cheap scares of the monster almost getting characters. The story is this: some gravediggers and a police officer team with a scientist and his new girlfriend to find a creature that lives in tunnels under a cemetery who become the target of a former FBI Agent who is hellbent on killing the creature as it killed his partner years back. Hunter is our hero of the issue as he is the scientist who wants to study the healing factors of the creature and knows that it could save many lives of injured people from all over the world. While he doesn’t get to flex his hero muscles to much in this comic he does use his brain to get them out of the shed and also comes up with an idea to bury himself to get close to the creature and find its lair. Tonya, Jake, Ed and Jessie are along for the ride and sadly are all caught up in this twisted game of kill or be killed. Buckner is a man who has turned mad and is eaten up with revenge and looks like he is willing to kill people in order to get it! The Creature is just being that an animal who is protecting its home and will kill and eat whom ever gets in its way! The comic is bloodless and doesn’t have any creature attacks and the horror aspect comes from suspense of the creature almost getting people and the drama of Buckner being crazy. The cover is an art version of the poster that hung in rental stores and is pretty eye catching for the time and for Horror Comic readers. The interior art is done by Paul Jenner and is solid and captures a true early 90’s independent comic feel. Over all this is only 12 pages long and is a great way to get readers hyped to see the film and is as well a great item for fans of the film to collect. To sum it up not life changing but a good quick read that does justice to the film. Check out the art below to see the Creature in all his ink and pen glory.

So we have gotten out of the tunnel and more importantly out of The Dark and we have found that the Allotheria Creature is a killing machine when provoked or attacked and that he jumped from movie to comic thanks to Norstar, a production company who released the film in Canada. So while we are all still in awaiting Halloween and with our next update being in October we are going to stick with our From Horror Movie To Horror Comic theme and take a look at The Willies! That’s right, the PG-13 Horror flick got its own comic and we will be taking a look at it next time we meet here at Rotten Ink. So until next time, read a Horror Comic or three, watch a Horror Movie or two and as always support your local Horror Host! The next update will give you The Willies!

Day Of The Monster Bash Vacation (2017)

Welcome back to Rotten Ink!  Once more, it’s time for Juliet and I to take a long overdue vacation, and once more we decided to spend it in Cranberry, PA to attend the best classic monster convention of all time, Monster Bash! It’s a special year as this is the 20th year of the convention and there are lots of great guests like Ricou Browning who played Gillman in Creature From The Black Lagoon, Larry Storch from The Ghostbusters and F-Troop as well as Hammer Horror actress Veronica Carlson to name a few. Plus I am pretty hyped to see what statues they have awaiting us attendees and whether there will be a fancy monster car up front besides The Munsters Drag-U-La! It will also be great to see David “The Rock” Nelson as well as Horror Hosts Son Of Ghoul, Mr. Lobo and Penny Dreadful as they are all great people and help add to this wonderful weekend getaway. I for one have been looking forward to this vacation for a while.  After moving and the stresses of work and the creative stuff I do, getting away and relaxing with classic monster fans sounded like bliss as well as just hanging out in the hotel and chatting with Juliet who is not only my girlfriend but also one of my best friends in the world as she is truly my soul mate. So on this update, we will also be taking a look at the third Romero film, Day Of The Dead as well as the one and only issue based on the film from Dead Dog Comics. So pack your bag and jump into the car as you friends and readers are going on a trip to Monster Bash!

Our quest for Monster Bash began on Thursday June 22, 2017 at around noon.  The weather was warm and muggy as Juliet and I climbed into the Mazda 3 and hit the highway. While driving we talked about Sparkle Comics and ideas for future issues that we would love to see be released by our comic family. We also chatted about Pro Wrestling from WWE all the way to Rockstar Pro and mostly chatted about wrestlers I remember watching when I was a youngster. For our listening pleasure, we listened to the podcast The Real Short Box that has three friends Kevin, Donald and Jarred talking about comic books with the best episode of the day being them talking about their favorite 80’s comic storylines with all three having good choices and all three so different.  If you have not listened to these guys and enjoy comics, you should check em out. For lunch we stopped at Ruby Tuesday’s on the Ohio and West Virginia border again where I enjoyed grilled salmon with rice and a baked potato, and Juliet dined on a crispy chicken cob salad. It was a very good meal, and this is the same one we ate at last trip to the Bash. Once in town we checked into the Comfort Inn in Cranberry and went to New Dimension Comics where I bought a stack of comics to read at night including issues of Action Comics, Avengers and Boris Karloff Tales Of Mystery.  We spent the rest of the night in and ate dinner at Eat N Park and went to bed with visions of monsters and horror films in our heads.

Friday, day one of Monster Bash kicked off with Juliet and I waiting for the convention to open at 3pm so we decided to get some brunch at Max & Erma’s and had a good and solid meal.  From there we decided to get some coffee in Mars at the Mars Brew House, a very cool family owned coffee house that serves very good variety of coffee. After getting our order and chatting with the owner about Monster Bash and Baron Von Porkchop, Juliet and I sat outside and enjoyed the cool and rainy weather under the porch while listening to the church bells and enjoying the feel of this small town. Also while there I had to get my picture with the UFO in my Space Monkey T-Shirt, and for you readers who don’t know who Space Monkey is shame on you as he is a very cool independent wrestler who is a monkey who was sent to space! After hanging in Mars for a little while, we decided that it was time to head back to the hotel and wait for the doors of Monster Bash to be open as we both love this convention! On a side note I also want to say that I really dig the small town feel of Mars as it reminds me of Mayberry as everyone is always so nice and train tracks run through downtown and churches are all around…just a very cool small town.

When 3pm hit Juliet and I made our way down to Monster Bash.  The Drag-U-La was out front, and I was happy to see it again! Once inside we noticed that this was the most busy we had ever seen Monster Bash since we began going, and it was great to see so many people at an event that is celebrating classic movie monsters. After waiting in line for a short time, we entered the convention and saw the statues that were all fantastic! This time they were Gillman from Creature Walks Among Us, The Monster from The Bride, Dracula from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and lastly the Hammer Horror version of The Phantom Of The Opera that was my clear cut favorite! We walked around and saw lots of amazing things and seen lots of great people. But after about an hour, the place was really hot and people started to forget manners so we decided to head to the hotel and relax and plan our Wing King and a movie night! As always this was a great first day, and we returned with some great items for our collections to fill our new home together.

So I am sure you’re wondering what my first day haul of goods from Monster Bash was, right? Well it was a good day even if it was over crowded and people kept bumping into and cutting in front of Juliet and I! So here is what I got comic book wise: Night Of The Living Dead: Back From The Grave # 1 comic for $2.50, El Toro Azul’s Monster Movie A Go-Go # 1- 2 for $10.00 and The Defenders # 70 for only $1.50! Paperback Book wise, I got Elvira: Camp Vamp for $3.75, King Kong for $4.75, Nosferatu The Vampire for $2.75 and Young Frankenstein for only $2.75! Music CD wise, I found a bootleg copy of The Cool Ghoul and his Phantasmagorical Funny Fonograf Record for $10.00, a true fun Horror Host release. And in DVD’s I got The Leech Woman for $20.00 and DVD-R’s of the films IT and Cry Of The Werewolf for $10.00 each! Over all a really great first day with lots of great items bought. The one I am most happy about finding is the paperback book of Young Frankenstein written by Gilbert Pearlman as I used to own this in my youth and am looking forward to reading it again. So check out the picture below for the cool haul from day 1.

For dinner the first night of Monster Bash we decided to eat Wing Kings and watch a movie on the old laptop.  The film we picked was Cry Of The Werewolf, a classic black and white film from 1944 as a classic monster movie seemed like the right choice for the evening. Cry Of The Werewolf stars Nina Foch, Stephen Crane and Osa Massen and was directed by Henry Levin who also did such films as “The Devil’s Mask” and “Honeymoon Hotel” and this would be my first time watching it! The plot of the movie is a princess who has the curse of the werewolf trying to keep quiet those she thinks are getting to close to her secret. And from Wing Kings I ordered 12 Garlic Wings and an order of Cheese Fries plus drank a small cup of Coke, and both the meal and the film were good and made for a perfect time for this evening. After dinner Juliet and I worked a little on some Sparkle Comics printing prep and later I read The Defenders # 70 that I bought from Monster Bash and watched some TV before going to bed and gearing up for the second day of one of my all time favorite conventions.

The second day of Monster Bash was way less busy and had less unaware people as Juliet and I were able to walk around and enjoy the world of classic movie monsters! Just being around fellow fans of classic monsters, comic books and vintage action figures is super relaxing plus seeing all the smiling faces as they are looking at DVD, VHS and comic books is really cool and feeds your inner nerd. Walking around I found a giant poster that show cased all the Marvel Comics Heroes and Villains from 1988, and I was having a blast finding all the characters and even found Man-Thing who was hiding and after talking to Juliet we decided to walk away from it, but if its still there on Day 3, it will be coming home with me as it was only $15.00 and would be amazing to hang up near my comic book collection. So after wandering around for a little while and saying hi to some of our horror host friends, we decided it was time to explore outside the convention.

After leaving the Bash, we headed to get some lunch at Moe’s and I had a really tasty chicken burrito with a lime coke to drink! Juliet and I sat in the restaurant and chatted about geeky stuff and decided from there to head back to New Dimension Comics who was having a store wide sale and we got 30% off our order! Juliet found a Star Trek: Next Generation issue she wanted to read, and I found handful of comics I wanted with such heroes as Wonder Woman, Thor and Lomax and after our brief shopping spree we decided to just drive around and check out the land and the local business in the area. After a nice and fun drive we decided to get some frozen yogurt from TCBY as Juliet cannot ever come to Cranberry and not eat there. After we had our nice midday snack we decided to go back to Monster Bash where I chatted with David “The Rock” Nelson and we once more soaked in the world of monsters, and once done headed back to the hotel to plan the night of Day 2 of Monster Bash.

Day 2’s haul at Monster Bash was also a good one as I found some really cool stuff! In comics I found Captain America Annual # 2 for only $2.00! I got a great Dr. Creep art print for free from the artist and it will be hung with pride in my editing room! I got two wood art plaques that will be hung in our horror movie room of Phantom Of The Opera and Waldemar Daninsky, and I must say having a Paul Naschy wood art piece for that room is pretty badass; they cost $25.00 each! I bought Devil Ant 1-3 on DVD-R from The Rock for $20.00 each, and I truly love supporting the world of shot on video directors. I also got the DVD of the zombie flick Sugar Hill for $20.00 and a DVD-R of the film The Dead Don’t Die for $10.00! And I got the paperback books of The Addams Family for $3.00 and Return Of The Living Dead signed by John Russo who chatted with me about finding the stock of this old book in the UK! So as you can see, I got some great stuff and I think my top purchase of the day had to be the Paul Naschy wood art…as it’s truly amazing!

For dinner, we decided to once more get some Eat N Park where I chomped down on some liver and onions with some rice, mashed potatoes & gravy as well as some hash browns and water to drink. The meal was good as always as Eat N Park has always delivered a good meal to Juliet and I when here in Cranberry! To finish off the meal, I ate a smile cookie, and I still really think it has a Monster Candy taste to them and for the rest of the night I read some comics and watched some TV before finally going to bed with the third and final day of Monster Bash to follow.

The third and final day of Monster Bash was on Sunday, and Juliet and I started our day getting breakfast at the Pig Iron right next door and I had an amazing dish called Chorizo Hash and a Pepsi to drink. Once done we walked around Monster Bash one last time and soaked in all the classic monsters and briefly chatted with vendors and said our goodbyes till next year. I must also note that the cool giant 1988 Marvel Comics character poster was gone so it just was not meant to be. After walking back to the hotel I really do think that Sparkle Comics and Baron Von Porkchop should vend one year at Monster Bash as I think that we would fit it so well and could spread our comics and Horror Host to the attendees. While we are still here in Cranberry, Pa for another two days, it’s very sad that another Monster Bash has come to an end and that I will have to wait another year to return! So as always I must praise Monster Bash for being one of the best Horror Cons that I attend and look forward to coming to it more in the future.

The third and final haul of goods from Monster Bash was pretty good as I picked up DVD’s of Monster Movie A Go-Go, a Horror Host show that has them hosting Plan 9 From Outer Space and Santa Claus Conquers The Martians as well as two independent horror films they made called Nail Biter and Children Of The Way plus a cool CD of a radio drama they made called Anton Rook The Mummy Express and I got all this for only $40.00! Plus I picked up a made for TV movie on DVD-R called Death Moon for $15.00! One cool thing about Death Moon is that it could be covered here on Rotten Ink as a “Made For TV” update! So as always another great day of cool stuff gotten and all stuff I am looking forward to watching.

After Monster Bash, it was time for Juliet and I to go on a little drive and go to The Snowman in Portersville as we love to get a cool snack and enjoy the farm land around us. On the drive over Juliet and I chatted about what is next for her to write in the world of Sparkle Comics, and while we did not lock a project many possibilities were discussed and by the end of our vacation I will have a project for her to work on! When we arrived at The Snowman, we noticed that it was the busiest it has been since we have been going, and this made me happy as I really love this little shaved ice shop. I ordered my Yeti Shake and Juliet got chocolate shaved ice and we chilled at a table and soaked in the sun and before leaving had to see the horses again with my favorite being Cookie who is the brown female horse who is 33 years old. Another great visit to The Snowman and if you’re in the Cranberry area make sure to stop by and enjoy a Yeti Shake or a shaved ice!

While leaving the Snowman and before hitting the highway again, I spotted a small cemetery near a church and had to stop and see it! The cemetery was behind Portersville Bible Church and was very tiny and surrounded by corn fields and sat on a hill with a great view! The parking lot had a very old a cool crypt that was turned into a shed and looked straight out of a classic black and white horror film and this was what really caught by eye as it was the perfect mix of classic and creepy. Many of the graves was very old and lots of the dates could not be read from wear, and the mood of the cemetery was very peaceful. As Juliet walked among the tombstones I stood on a patch of bare land and looked around the land around and breathed in the fresh air.  After a while we decided to leave and Juliet would not go to the abandon school across the street so we headed back out into the world of Pennsylvania!

After a great day of exploring and relaxing, we decided that we were once more going to have a night of Wing Kings and a movie! I was craving some wings and spending the evening watching a Horror Film and before bed reading Captain America Annual # 6 sounded like a perfect way to end the night. So I ordered 12 garlic wings and some cheese sticks and the film of the night was Devil Ant, the shot on video masterpiece from independent filmmaker pioneer David “The Rock” Nelson! The films that The Rock makes are so much fun and have so much heart and entertainment value to them and capture the true nature of shot on video backyard films. Plus The Devil Ant is packed with tons of cameos from such people as Roger Corman, Hilary Clinton, Son Of Ghoul and Svengoolie to name a few. Plus eating tasty chicken wings and watching a zero budget film is something I think every Horror movie fan should do on Sunday nights! So after dinner and the movie I climbed into bed and read the Captain America comic and went to bed ending the third and final day of Monster Bash.

Day five of being in Cranberry, Juliet and I decided to get some breakfast at Einstein Bros and after went to the Cranberry Cinema to see Transformers: The Last Knight on the big screen! We both really like the Cranberry Cinema as its a great independently owned first run theater with a great staff and on Mondays tickets are cheaper and they give you a free small popcorn! After the movie we hung out again at the hotel and I read some comics and took a nap, and once back up we ate lunch at Max And Erma’s and had desert at TCBY making it the second time we had frozen yogurt on this trip. After we had a good frozen treat, we went back to New Dimension Comics and loaded up on great $1.00 books where I found such cool comics like Night Of The Living Dead: Aftermath, Captain America and many more. Once back at the hotel and when evening came we watched WWE Monday Night Raw and had diner at Bob Evans via carry out. Before bed I read the first issue of Night Of The Living Dead: Aftermath and an issue of Action Comics. And so ended another great day of our vacation.

On the six and final day of our vacation in Cranberry we decided to head to Mars Brew House and get some coffee before we headed to what is always one of my must stops the place that for me helps get my creative juices flowing, Evans City Cemetery, the shooting location for one of the most iconic zombie and horror films of all time Night Of The Living Dead! I have been to this place many times and its charm and just beautiful atmosphere is refreshing to a guy like we who likes small town life, but has to live in the city as well as work in it. Juliet and I walked around for a long while chatting about Sparkle Comics, zombie films, graves and Monster Bash. One thing we noticed this year is that the cemetery was over run by chipmunks that darted around like little fuzzy wildmen.  This of course made us joke about doing a comic called “Night Of The Living Chipmunks”! Even at one point as we were walking the isles of tombstones we both had to dodge a crazed bird that was flying right toward us! This is such a peaceful place and if you find yourself in the area and just need a quite place to relax and maybe read a book or comic make sure to stop here and soak it all in.

While in Cranberry I sent a message to Wampum Underground to see if Juliet and I could take a tour of the main filming spot of my favorite zombie film of all time and the main topic of this update Day Of The Dead…but sadly they would not allow us, and while it was a letdown, I understand why they don’t let fans of the film in as it would be nonstop plus they store people’s personal items as well as companies. So while we could not go inside Juliet and I still decided to at least drive to it and see it from the outside, and man when we arrived I just imagined the whole area being swarmed with zombies and this made me smile. We drove past it a few times and I snapped a few pictures as we pulled over so that I could at least soak in the filming spot. Once done Juliet and I headed back home and chatted about comics, movies, life and wrestling while we listened to more Real Short Box Podcasts. I always hate when this vacation to Monster Bash comes to an end as I really do enjoy being there and just love the fact that classic monsters are being honored by the staff of the Bash as well as fans who attended the event. Once home I had a few more days off before I had to return to work and spent it working on the new house, working on Sparkle Comics and found some old movie scripts that might be finally shot for the possible rebirth of Independent B Movie. So that was the vacation part of this update and now its time for us to talk about…..DAY OF THE DEAD!

George A. Romero created the modern zombie film with his 1968 classic “Night Of The Living Dead” that I covered twice here on Rotten Ink.  One was the Prolougue & Aftermath and then I did the Adaptation of the film both done by Fantaco Comics. Then in 1978, he returned to the zombie world and made the masterpiece “Dawn Of The Dead” with last year me taking a look at the IDW Adaptation of the film, and now this year’s Monster Bash leads me to my favorite in the series hands down “Day Of The Dead”! So if you’re ready to go underground to hide from the living dead, we will start our journey into the third Romero film and enter the world of when the dead ruled the day and the dawn was over!

Let’s begin our trip to the underground world were the dead has taken over topside by breaking down the film itself. While I could babble on about this film for ever I will make it brief as I also think that those who want to really get the inside story of the film should buy the Scream Factory DVD or Blu-Ray and watch the fantastic extras that goes into the full history of the film.

Day Of The Dead was part of a three film deal that George A. Romero signed with Laurel Entertainment who wanted the third film in his dead series to be made and as part of the deal, both Creepshow and Knightriders were made and unleashed onto the horror watching masses. The idea for Day of The Dead started out big as the original budget was set at $7 million, and it was supposed to be the “Gone With The Wind” of zombie films! The original idea was to have it be high action with the army fighting zombies with boats and explosions in Florida with lots of the budget going into the effects. But after the budget was cut down to only $3.5 million, the big ideas had to be cut down to a more practical story.  The film ended up being mostly shot in Pennsylvania with some still being filmed in Florida, and they took lots of the action out of the script and added more drama. Casting was perfect and went as following Lori Cardille as Sarah Bowman, Terry Alexander as John, Jarlath Conroy as Bill, Joseph Pilato as Captain Rhodes, Gary Howard as Pvt. Steel and Sherman Horard as Bub to name a few. He hired Tom Savini and his crew to do the FX including Gregory Nicotero who would go on to do FX on the hit AMC show The Walking Dead. The film needed lots of zombies, and extras were brought in and did it for free or made a $1.00 and got a hat that said “I Was A Zombie In Day Of The Dead”. The production was grueling as they filmed under ground in Wampum, and the air down there made many actors and crew sick. When done Laurel Entertainment released it to limited theaters on July 19, 1985 and was meet with mix reviews by fans and critics and only brought in $5,000,000.00 at the US Box Office making the film not a major hit, but it did do better overseas bringing in $28 million to help the film become a minor hit. In 1985 Day of the Dead was # 115 at the box office and beat out such classic genre films as “Godzilla 1985”, “Rainbow Brite And The Star Stealer”, “The Bride”, “Re-Animator”, “Def-Con 4” and “The Company Of Wolves” to name a few. What hurt Day Of The Dead at the cinema was the fact it had a limited release and was up against other horror films like “A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Dead”, “Fright Night”, “Friday The 13th V: A New Beginning”, “Silver Bullet” and “Return Of The Living Dead,” a film that updated the the zombie genre that Romero created with faster, smarter and more threatening undead. But while for the longest time it was viewed as the weaker of the Romero Dead Trilogy, it has gained the respect and fanfare that it has been due since it was released. Again while I love many zombie films like Zombi 2, Return Of The Living Dead, White Zombie, Night of The Living Dead and Dawn Of The Dead, it’s Day of The Dead that remains my favorite.

So as you can see hands down my favorite zombie film of all time is Day Of The Dead and many of you long time readers remember that I first saw this film on USA Network when I was a kid and it captured my imagination and was a hot talk topic at school when it first aired on that iconic network. I spent sometime as well drawing pictures of Bub and wondering if he would show up in the 4th Romero Dead film. Once we got a VCR and I found the VHS tape of the movie, I of course bought it and watched the hell out of it! When playing Resident Evil 3: Nemesis on the Sony Playstation and near death I would limp around and scream “Come On” just like Captain Rhodes did in the film as it always made me and others laugh. The home video market is what helped Day Of The Dead gain fans and would also be what helped it make more money to build it up to being profitable. I also really like the fact that in Walking Dead season 4 in the episode called Us, characters Glenn and Tara are in a tunnel and are being attacked by zombies and clearly one of the zombies is Bub!! I watch this film on DVD all the time and even watch the USA Network print that my pal Jason Young gave me that he recorded when he was a youngster! So do yourself a favor and make sure to watch this film this Halloween as it’s worth the view.

I also want to note that with a heavy heart as I was working on this update, George A. Romero passed away from lung cancer, and this was a major blow to me as I have been a longtime fan of his work and even visit his filming locations as his films mean that much to me. I want to dedicate this blog update to Mr. Romero and want to think him for all the scares he has delivered to all us Horror Fans and my thoughts are with his family, friends and fans during this very sad and hard time.

The score soundtrack for Day of The Dead is done by John Harrison and mixes eerie horror with an island sound delivering a very interesting and in my opinion very memorable score. That’s one thing that drives me crazy is when people try and compare the Harrison score for Day Of The Dead against the Goblin score for Dawn Of The Dead as they are two different styles for two different styles and mood of films and each do their respective film justice. Harrison’s score music is very moody and captures the dread as well as the hope that members of the underground group have, as the dark sounds really represent the zombies and the army both who are the the real threats to the group of scientist as the more island sound represents our heroes and John the pilot who has a thought that they should take over an island and restart mankind and leave the past behind us. I have played this soundtrack many times on Alpha Rhythms on WYSO, and my favorite track is “Breakdown” as I truly think its an amazing track and sums up the feel and mood of the film. This soundtrack has been released on Vinyl and CD, and the first time I owned it was on a CD called “Dead Trilogy” that had it paired with Night and Dawn and was made by Roger’s Basement a cool old website that use to offer hard to find and never released soundtracks to Horror and Science Fiction films that would also have dialogue from the films, very cool stuff and I wish Roger would comeback to the web and start this back up again. Now I also own the soundtrack on an official CD release put out by Taurus, and on the vinyl reissue from Waxwork. If you’re a lover of Horror Film score music, do yourself a favor and pick this one up as it’s really is a great listen.

Like “Night Of The Living Dead” and “Dawn Of The Dead” before it, “Day Of The Dead” has had its share of some amazing merchandise! Like a very cool Prism Sticker that was in vending machines back in the late 80’s. Movie posters for theaters and video stores that would also find their way to being reproductions for home décor. The soundtrack made its way to vinyl and CD and has been played many times on Alpha Rhythms on WYSO. Halloween masks based on the likeness of Bub and Dr. Tongue have been made for fans to dress as their favorite zombie of the film. Plus Amok Time has made some amazing action figures based on Day Of The Dead of Dr. Tongue and Bub and these figures are a must have for fans of the film. Also fan art, shirts and comics have been made as well at the film has been released on many home media like VHS and DVD. Also Day of The Dead has been released on Blu-Ray and in the Arrow limited edition release a cool mini comic book came inside called “Day of The Dead: Desertion” that was about everyone’s favorite zombie Bub…before he was a zombie! So if you are a fan of this film like me, I am sure you own many of these cool items and here is hoping for more items to be made as I will for sure buy them to add to my collection.

So while Bub and Dr. Tongue are the two zombies from the film that get most of the attention from horror fans, I want to focus on one who in my opinion is over looked but is all the same a very cool zombie, and I am talking about Beef Treats! I am sure some of you readers are asking yourself who is Beef Treats, and I am here to tell you he is the male zombie that is captured and refuses to eat the beef in a can that the doctors are trying to feed him that is supplied by the army. Beef Treats, while not a major zombie in the film, has built up a fan following and was played by actor Mark Tierno whom I have had the honor of going to dinner with along side my pal Geoff Burkman who played a zombie in Day Of The Dead, Juliet, my pal David J. Getz and fans of writers of this iconic third film in the Romero Dead series at a Brown Derby restaurant after the Cinema Wasteland Convention in Strongsville, Ohio area. The dinner was lots of fun as it was great to hear Mark talk about his time on set and the motivation behind playing Beef Treats, I also think it was humorous that during dinner he ordered brussel sprouts, and in my mind I pictured a zombie eating those vegetables and it made me chuckle. It was also great seeing the fans and such asking Geoff about his time as a zombie as he is very proud of the fact he was in that film, and as he should be. So while he is not as iconic as Bub, I must say Beef Treats is a great zombie who added his own blood stain in the world of Day Of The Dead! So here is to you Beef Treats and actor Mark Tierno, who made this zombie come undead on the silver screen.

On April 11, 2015 Juliet and I decided to take our pal Geoff Burkman to Cinema Wasteland Convention as they had a big Day Of The Dead reunion.  Geoff played a zombie in the film and wanted to chat with the star.  This is also my favorite zombie film of all time, and I wanted to meet such stars as Lori Cardille, Terry Alexander, Sherman Howard, Gary Howard and all the others attending.  The main person I wanted to meet was Joe Pilato who plays Captain Rhodes, one of the best characters in Horror Cinema! The drive up to Wasteland was lots of fun and we all chatted about movies, The Walking Dead and even ideas for a Babysitter Massacre 2! Once at the event Geoff went his separate way as did Juliet and I, and after walking around for a few minutes and catching up with the old Cinema Wasteland Family, I got the honor of meeting Joe Pilato, and man, was he one kick ass dude! He cracked me up as when coming up to his table he screamed out to the crowd “Oh My God It’s Billy Romero, George’s Son!” as he told me that I reminded him of a young George Romero and that was one heck of a great compliment coming from him. The people around all looked at me when he screamed this, and I think some of them really did think I was Romero’s son! While at the table I chatted with Joe for a short time and told him all the same things all fans do about how he played one of my favorite characters of all time and got his autograph as well as a photo with him. Before we left his table he asked Juliet and I if we were going to the Day Of The Dead Q & A that was happing later on in the day and we of course said yes! Lucky for us when the time came we all got good seats and listened to the cast and crew chat about the making of the film as well as shout out famous lines from the film….it was amazing to hear all this in person! As we left the convention was when we were able to go out to dinner with Beef Treats Zombie and chat with fellow lovers of this film. I must say that Cinema Wasteland does it right when it comes to showcasing amazing cult actors and directors and don’t fill their guest list with B-List cameo actors from mainstream modern cable TV series. So I want to thank Ken and Pam for making this convention rock as much as it does as they have the heart and soul of true Horror fans! Below is the pic of Joe and I from Wasteland.

My pal Geoff, as you know by now, was a zombie extra in Day of The Dead. I have known Geoff since I was five years old as he owned a record store called Renaissance Music that my dad would shop at and I would as well once as I got older. Geoff is a cool guy and has been in a ton of plays in and around the Dayton area as well as has been in lots of great locally made films like The Manson Family, The Wolf Hunter 1-2, Babysitter Massacre, Depression The Movie, Atrocity Circle and many more. So it’s my pleasure and honor to sit with Geoff Burkman, zombie extra for Day Of The Dead and ask him a few questions!

Matt: How Did You Hear About The Casting Of Zombie Extras For Day Of The Dead?

Geoff: I was friends with a WSU film student, Bill Laxson, who was a customer at the shop. A year or so after he graduated, I think, I got a call from him out of the blue, telling me he’d gotten a job as a PA on the film. Either he mentioned the possibility, or I geeked out, or whatever, but one thing led to another, and soon I was in touch with the ladies running extras casting, and the rest is history.

Matt: When Selected Who Picked That You Would Be The Baseball Catcher Zombie?

Geoff: He was an umpire, actually. That was likely the choice of costuming, based on my measurements. I had no idea what I would be until I got there.

Matt: What Was The Process Like Getting Into The Makeup? And Who Did Your Makeup?

Geoff: Day One was the umpire zombie, part of the assembly line. Sadly, I don’t recall the name of the lady who did mine. I want to say there were 4-6 stations for making up the extras that morning. Took maybe an hour or so, iirc. Overall, we were on site by 730am and fully costumed, made up and ready to rock by 10am. We didn’t get called to shoot until at least 10pm that night. So, a whole bunch of waiting around.

Day Two I played a different zombie, one of the collar gang, presumably from the depths of the walled-off cavern. For that one I’d been shown through Saviniland by Bill and intro’ed to Tom himself as a possible head-shot zombie. No such luck, my hair was deemed not thick enough to mask the squib. Still, it was either Tom or one of his assistants (not Nicotero that I can remember, although I did meet him) who did me up, complete with several facial wounds off the “Zombies’R’Us” prosthetic molds.

Matt: Tell Us About The Scenes You Were In And Did You Get To Share The Screen With The Stars?

Geoff: Nope, no screen-shares for me. Day One umpire zombie shot scenes of the devouring of Steele, which show up late in the film. Umpire dude appears in the back right of two quick floor level shots with action in center frame. Of course, a lot more takes and angles were shot than appear in the film, including a close-up of me trying to jam a bloody bone through my mask. Boy, I’d love to have the raw footage from that night’s shoot!

Day Two was scenes of the break-in to the complex after Steele shoots open the door, so my guy shows up in the panning shot of the horde swarming in. I also did background for the sequence with Rhodes slamming a zombie off his golf cart, but I’ve never found him onscreen, even with careful freeze-framing. I was there, nonetheless. I was also a part of the crowd entering Steele’s death room, but didn’t make the final cut, despite another close-up in which Romero directed me to create a momentary bottleneck in the doorway. Such is the fate of an extra, even dead ones. So, I never got to work with any of the leads, although I was privileged to watch Joe Pilato, Gary Klar, and Taso Stavrakis (as a stunt zombie) do their thing. I don’t recall seeing any of the other actors while I was there, though I could just be forgetting that, since it’s not like they go around being introduced to the extras, and I would have been far too reserved/shy to approach them.

Matt: What Do You See The Fate Of Your Zombie Being After The Events Of The Film?

Geoff: Ha, ha! Pretty sad for them, eh? Stuck in that underground facility with the only way out going up the ladder after the escaping humans. And given that umpire dude was busy chowing down while Sara’s group was busy escaping, it’s not likely he ever made his way back into the cavern and up that ladder. I figure he just ended up wandering around until maybe he found a baseball somewhere and then sat down and bounced it off a wall until he rotted away. Same fate for my collar zombie, too, minus the baseball entertainment. I’d have to say that most if not the entirety of that horde eventually just fell apart, likely in pitch black after the power went out. Good thing they were already dead; what a way to go!

Matt: Thanks Geoff for sharing your memories with me again and my readers!

Geoff Burkman is a class act and has and always will be a great friend to me. I also really like the fact that Geoff enjoys horror films as well as comic books and music, and this is why I think we get along so well. Looking at all my friends I must say I have some very creative people in my life from movie makers, Actors, Comic Artists, Pro Wrestlers, Musicians, Painters, Models, Freakshow Performers, Horror Hosts, Tattoo Artist, Radio DJs, Book Authors, Clothing Designers, Beard Competition Winners, Craft Makers, Store Owners, Photographers and so many others who all do creative things! And I must say I value each of my friendships as each person makes my life better. So thanks again Geoff for taking your time and to answer 5 Questions for my readers and me. Below is a picture of the icon George A. Romero and tons of zombie extras.

As a longtime comic book reader, I was super hyped when I discovered a cool comic book company called Dead Dog Comics in around 2004 that kept showing up at Cinema Wasteland when I was a vendor there with Independent B Movie and later Andy Copp as this company was making high quality horror comics that were original and others based on movies, I would buy first thing and read them once back at the hotel and after dinner. The first comic I got from them was Night Of The Living Dead: Barbara’s Zombie Chronicles # 1 and I was hooked and even when returning home added all their comics I could to my Mavericks Cards and Comics pull list. I would also chat with the creators and owners of Dead Dog Comics while at Wasteland, and they would tell me what was coming up and listen to my ideas of what horror films should be comics as they clearly loved what they made and created. Sadly they closed shop in roughly 2007 and the void they left would not be filled for me until 2016 when Eibon Press was unleashed on the comic reading market. One of Dead Dog’s final releases was the comic we are about to review based on Day Of The Dead. I can remember being so hyped when I picked up this copy from Cinema Wasteland and was not disappointed when I read it then and can’t wait to see if it holds up! The downside is that this series was supposed to be a 3 issue mini series but only had one issue released before they went under. So as we travel even deeper underground to get away from the zombies I can hear this echo “Remember I grade these on a standard 1-4 star rating and am looking at how well the comic keeps to the source material, its entertainment value, its art and story.” So with that, let’s see how well this comic holds up to my memories and how well it does justice to my favorite zombie film of all time.

Day Of The Dead: The Rising Of Bub # 1 ***
Released in 2007 Cover Price $4.95 Dead Dog Comics # 1 of 3

Joe, his wife Anne, and a whole apartment filled of survivors hear the call from army soldier Miguel in the streets of Florida and try to get everyone together quickly in order to be saved, but an accident leaves one of their members dead and the opportunity to be saved lost. The survivors’ morale is down as they all meet up and try and figure out where the helicopter came from and who is manning it. The survivors group is made up of all types of people from young to old and locals and vacationers all who give their ideas about where the base is that holds their saviors, but it’s Norman who looks beyond the big airfields and finds a location that he thinks is the perfect place for them to be at. The next morning the adults meet at Norman’s garage and find that his plan is to use a push car called The Phalanx to get to the local jeep dealership in order to hot wire them and get them to the target location, and before they can decide if the idea will work over breakfast they are interrupted by Kat and her boyfriend who inform Joe that Anne has killed herself. While all this is going on the zombies are gathering and Bub is now free and leading a group of the undead.

This is Walking Dead and Land Of The Dead mixed as this focuses on a group of survivors who are held up in a apartment building in Florida who want so badly to be saved and think that if they can get to the base that Rhodes and his men are at that, they can be saved and are doing all they can to come up with an idea to reach their safe zone that they are unaware has been overrun by zombies. Joe is the “leader” of the survivors as it’s clear he is the one with the level head and breaks up fights and tries his best to keep the peace among his people. He also tries his best to keep an eye on his lady Anne and his daughter Kat who are also suck in this world of the undead. Norman and the rest of the group are all good people that are trying not to snap in the bad situation that they are in and tempers do get short as they all think they know what’s good for an escape. The zombies are everywhere and are hungry for human flesh and even Dr. Tongue is on the prowl looking for a quick meal. Bub is around but only shown in one panel as he is leading a group of zombies around underground and makes you wonder how angry he is. This is a great issue as it builds up our survivors and shows that they are desperate to find help and are stuck in a bad way as the world around them is filled with the undead.  The only major downside is that while Bub and the zombies are around, they are very much second thoughts and are the cause of the whole drama but only really get to eat one person for the whole issue. I would have liked to have seen more of Bub and do realize that issues 2 and 3 would have shown him more, but still a little sad all we got is one panel in this issue. The cover is great and shows a mad looking Bub in the underground.  The interior art is done by Jeff Zornow and is fantastic stuff and captures a good zombie comic feel. Over all this very much held up for me, and I enjoyed reading it in 2017 just as much as I did in 2007…wow that’s been 10 years! Fans of the film will enjoy this issue even if it’s not as dark as the film, and I hope that Dead Dog Comics comes back and delivers more comics based on cool horror films.  All I can say is come on, Chazz DeMoss, make this happen! Check out this cool art below to see what style this comic delivers.

So the day has ended, and we have survived another zombie invasion as well as another Monster Bash vacation.  I for one can’t wait to go back to Cranberry again next year and do it all over again! So with this we are leaving zombies behind and once more stepping back into the world of Pro Wrestling as we take a look at Chyna and the Chaos! comics based on her. So until next time, enjoy the rest of this summer, read a comic or three, watch a Romero film or two and as always support your local Horror Host! So see you in the ring, my readers and friends!

From Horror Movie To Horror Comic: Phantasm (1979)

You Write A Good Blog, Boy…But Now You Die! Those words are something I would like to think The Tall Man would scream at me if he was here at my apartment while I write this update.  The Phantasm film series is a horror franchise that breaks the mold of what one thinks of when comparing it to other horror films that came before.  The film was not made up of vampires, zombies, a slasher killer, ghosts or even animals running wild; oh no, this film was something more with a killer who was beyond the realms of normal horror bad guys as The Tall Man is so much more than your normal villain of cinema. When choosing Horror Comics for this year’s countdown to Halloween many titles were considered, but one I knew for sure had to be in this year’s roundup was this Xmachina comic based on Phantasm as the movie series as well as this comic deserved to be talked about here on Rotten Ink. This marks not only our second update in our countdown to Halloween but also the first in our “From Horror Movie To Horror Comic” updates that join our returning update themes like “Horror Host Icon”, “Alien Invasion”, “Undead Files”, “NES Challenge” and “Marvel At The Movies” among others. What I am trying to showcase in these updates are horror movie themed comics that lasted for 1-4 issues (some cases could be more issues) and can be from any comic company from Marvel all the way to Blackthrone and can be an adaptation or its own story or a prequel based on the characters of the film it’s named after. This also can apply to promo comics that used to be given away at video rental stores and now come inside DVDs and Blu-Rays, plus still sometimes at the movie theaters! Many great horror movie themed comics have been released and sadly many have been forgotten, so I feel it’s my duty here on Rotten Ink to dig them up from the comic long box graveyard and give them life once more and share them with you, my friends and readers, who might have interest in tracking them down to read or collect. So with that, let’s move into the graveyard and dodge those evil metal flying spheres and get one step closer to the world of The Tall Man!

The Phantasm movie series is the brain child of director and writer Don Coscarelli who grew up a fan of horror and wanted to make his own in the booming market. Inspired by the book “Something Wicked This Way Comes” by Ray Bradbury as well as from elements from films like “Suspiria” and “Invaders From Mars,” he made a film that became a hit at the box office as well sparked a cult-like following that is still going strong to this day. So before we dive too deep into this update, I want to talk about the films. The write ups will once more come from our friends at IMDB with some info and my brief thoughts and memories of the films…so let’s dodge the spheres and leap over some tombstones and get to talking about the films that are near and dear to many horror fans’ hearts.

Phantasm (1979)

“Mike, a young teenage boy who has just lost his parents, is afraid to lose his brother. This fear causes him to follow his brother to a funeral, where Mike witnesses the Tall Man lift a coffin on his own. Mike decides to investigate and discovers a horrible world where the Tall Man, along with his flying spheres, shrink them to half their normal size and reanimate them as slaves. It is then up to Mike, his brother, and Reggie the ice cream man to stop the Tall man.”

Phantasm was one of those films that when I first viewed it as a youngster, I was lost by the twist and turns of the plot, but nonetheless was so drawn in by the atmosphere. Looking back, I think I first saw this film on the USA Network or some other cable station as I can remember watching it with my brother late on a weekend night while living in Waynesville. As I grew older and into my teens when I started to collect more and more horror films on VHS, the Phantasm series was on my must-own list, and part one always remained a chilling and bizzarre classic in my eyes. The film was directed by Don Coscarelli, who also was the brain behind the idea of characters, and the cast was made up of such talents as Michael Baldwin as Mike, Bill Thornbury as Jody, Reggie Bannister as ice cream man Reggie and Angus Scrimm as The Tall Man. At the US Box Office it brought in a total of $11.988,469.00 on a $300,000.00 budget. The year it was released, it was joined by such other Horror Films as “The Amityville Horror”, “The Driller Killer”, “Tourist Trap”, “Zombie 2”, “Screams Of A Winter Night”, “Cannibal Holocaust” and “The Dark” to name a few. This first one is a true cult classic in my book and is one that you should watch this Halloween season if you have not seen it, and hell even if you have seen it, watch it again!

Phantasm II (1988)

“Mike is released from psychiatry, when he agrees with the doctors that the terrible happenings in his past were just in his imagination. But once he’s free, he contacts Redge and they team up to hunt down and eliminate the “Tall Man”, who plunders the graveyards and abducts the sleeping with help of his terrible gnomes. A beautiful strange girl starts to appear in Mike’s dreams. He assumes she’s in danger and needs their help – will they find her before the Tall Man can do her any harm?”

I can remember when Phantasm II was coming out to theaters as Fangoria Magazine was pushing it, and the TV spots playing on the local stations always captured my attention. My first time seeing the film was when it hit home video and my cousins Dino and Norman rented it and had me and my brother over to watch it. I can remember when the sphere killed one of the Tall Man’s funeral workers, Norman and I cheered and were in wonder as the effects looked fantastic.  This sequel was also directed by Don Coscarelli with actors James LeGros as Mike, Reggie Bannister as Reggie, Paula Irvine as Liz and Angus Scrimm as The Tall Man. The film did okay for Universal at the US Box Office bringing in $7,282,851.00 on a $3 million dollar budget. The film came in at 103 for the year and beat such cult films as Waxwork, Hot To Trot, Mac And Me, The Unholy, Braddock: Missing In Action III, Elvira Mistress Of The Dark, Monkey Shines, Night Of The Demons, Pumpkinhead, Maniac Cop, Hero And The Terror and Critters 2: The Main Course to name a few. The sequel packs a wicked punch and adds to the mystery of The Tall Man and his wicked dead spreading ways, a great watch for your Halloween season for sure.

Phantasm III: Lord Of The Dead (1994)

“The Tall Man, that imposing menace from Morningside Mortuary, is back and once again haunting the thoughts of the now-adult Mike and his friend, ex-Ice Cream vendor Reggie. The two continue their hunt for the mysterious figure and in his path of destruction encounter a variety of dangerous situations, friends and enemies. They also must contend with the resurrected dead plus a growing number of the infamous and deadly silver spheres which aid the Tall Man as he sets his sights on indoctrinating Mike and finishing the fight begun so many years ago”

Phantasm III was the first of the series not to make it to theaters, and the rumor going around about why it went direct to video was because Universal and Don Coscarelli were at war with each other and they did this as a way to flex their muscle, but by doing this they created one of the top selling direct to video films of all time. I first saw the film when my brother Bryan and I rented it from K&L Video, and both of us liked it but were also confused by some of it.  But that’s the real charm of the Phantasm films, they reveal answers but also make it so there are more questions that need answers from film to film. This one also adds female characters named Rocky and Tanesha who are also on a quest to take down the sinister Tall Man…part three in this series is great and was one that was worth renting and now owning on DVD.

Phantasm IV: Oblivion (1998)

“Taking off immediately where the last one ended, in this episode Mike travels across dimensions and time fleeing from the Tall Man, at the same time he tries to find the origins of his enemy, and what really happened the night that his brother died. Meanwhile, Reggie (accompanied by a beauty he picked up on the road) battles the spheres and the undead in a quest to find Mike before the Tall Man can complete his transformation.”

The fourth film in the series was another one that my brother Bryan and I rented from Blockbuster Video.  While good, I did find it to be the weakest in the series, but even with that said, it’s still an amazing and strange film. I don’t have much to say about this film besides I bought it on VHS and later DVD. It was great seeing The Tall Man back in 1998, and it was released by MGM this time around and not Universal. Also a fun fact is that the film was originally written under the title “Phantasm 1999 A.D.” and would have been set in a post-apocalyptic world and would have co-starred Bruce Campbell, but that script could not find funding so it disappeared into developmental hell. This film also had the lowest budget out of all the sequels that were made up to that point. Over all it’s a solid sequel that adds to the legend and mysteries that is The Tall Man.

Phantasm V: Ravager (2016)

“The final installment of the long-running Phantasm series.”

Not much is known about this fifth film in Phantasm series besides it was filmed in secret from 2012-2013.  Oddly enough the film has been scheduled for release this year and has yet to see the light of the movie theater or even the home viewing market, but just recently the release date of October 7th, 2016 was announced. This fifth film is also supposed to be the end of the series and is also the only film not to be directed by Don Coscarelli as David Hartman steps into the director’s chair. I am hoping that the Neon Movies in Dayton will get this film to screen when released, but I won’t hold my breath. I am very much looking forward to this film as the world needs another nightmare of celluloid featuring The Tall Man. So you friends and readers, are you looking forward to this fifth and final Phantasm film?

Tall Man in The Crypt

I am sure some of your readers would like to know who is Tall Man and what is he about. In the 19th century a mortician named Jebediah Morningside had become obsessed with finding out the connections between the worlds of the dead and the living.  He researched and built a machine that would allow him to travel through time and space via a portal that when stepping into it, lead him to an unknown destination and when returning he was no longer Jenediah; he was different…he was now The Tall Man. With these changes he became immortal, super strong, can shape shift, is telekinetic and able to control not only people but also objects with his mind.  When having a body part cut off, the severed limb not only grows back but the amputated limb can transform into insect-like creatures.  His helpers are many as he not only has humans to help in his goal to make the world a graveyard, but also small dwarves, gas mask wearing guards and spheres to name a few. His only known major weakness is cold as it’s believed that the dimension he came from is very hot and this makes is body not able to deal with freezing temperatures. Another fact is that with the change his blood is no longer red but yellow, and while he can be hurt, he has never been killed as shown for 4 films thus far (could his death be in the fifth film?). What makes The Tall Man a fascinating character is the fact that his motives are unknown for the most part besides he wants the land of the living to be the land of the dead. While he can talk, he is a bad guy of few words and mostly uses his face and eyebrow movement to show his feelings. The Tall Man is said to be 6 feet 4 inches tall, have grey hair and is always wearing a black suit. Actor Angus Scrimm has played The Tall Man for five films and his portrayal will forever lock The Tall Man as a true iconic character in the world of horror films. And one has to wonder if the Creepypasta Slenderman is slightly based on The Tall Man…think about it.

Let’s talks a little about actor Angus Scrimm, shall we? Born on August 19, 1926 in Kansas City, Kansas, Scrimm started his media journey when he wrote and edited for such magazines as TV Guide and Los Angeles Herald Examiner and would also write the liner notes for LPs and CDs for bands like The Beatles and Frank Sinatra and even won a Grammy for his work on liner notes. Hits first acting role was in 1973 in the film “Sweet Kill” with another role that year being in “Sceam Bloody Murder” and after another small role in 1976 for a film called “Jim The World’s Greatest.”  His career changing role would come three years later in 1979 when he landed the role of The Tall Man in the film Phantasm.  This launched his career in acting in horror and cult films, landing roles in “Wiches’ Brew”, “Subspecies”, “Wishmaster” and “John Dies At The End,” to name a few. Angus would travel around the world acting and appearing at conventions and was always a man who made time for his fans. But sadly on January 9th 2016 at the age of 89, Angus Scrimm passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and friends.  This marked another major blow for fans of horror as the year before we lost Wes Craven and Christopher Lee. While gone, his work will live one, and I just wanted to take a moment and honor the man who truly made The Tall Man come alive and scare all those who witnessed his cinema and home video madness. This update is for you, Mr. Scrimm.

The Tall Man has lots of creepy helpers that are trying to usher in a world of death.  Let’s take a few moments to take a look at them. The most popular of his helpers are the Spheres, also known as Sentinels.  They are flying weapons of death that are packing drills, knives, lasers and saws inside of them and are pure killing machines. The Dwarves, also called Lurkers, are pint size terrors who are crushed down dead bodies that have their brains removed and act as his main forces in his quest. The Hearse is another of his allies, a roaming self controlled four wheeled death machine, and lastly we have the Gravers, who are gas mask wearing slaves who act as guards. All these minions help make The Tall Man a true menace that the world fears and has to combat in order to save their towns from becoming wastelands of death.

Phantasm has had its share of merchandise and only VHS, DVD and Blu-Ray and other home media releases. Over the years Phantasm and its character The Tall Man have appeared on t-shirts, posters, a comic book, action figures, posters, books, wall clock, hats and many more official and unoffical products. Over the years my most favorite Phantasm item I own is my NECA action figure that not only showcases The Tall Man but also a Lurker.  I also really like my Xmachina Comic as well as an item I will be talking about very shortly. So if you’re a fan of Phantasm and are also a collector of cool things, you can find some very kick butt stuff that showcases characters and the logos for this cult classic horror film.

In 2009, a Phantasm homebrew video game was made for the Atari 2600 by Scott Dayton.  During its limited release, it was placed on a cart, and I was lucky enough to get a copy of it to play. It’s an adventure game and has you looking around doors in the mausoleum trying to find your shotgun and fighting off the dwarves and dodging The Tall Man who says/screams “Boy” at you. The best part of the game is the midi version of the film’s theme…amazing! While not ground breaking, the game is very much a fun play and makes you flashback to the days when a joystick and one button were all you needed to play a game. While out of print and pretty hard to find, from time to time it will show up on Ebay, and for a high price, you too can get yourself a copy of the horror video game.

The score music for the 1979 classic Phantasm was done by Fred Myrow and Malcolm Seagrave and could be some of the most memorable horror film music to come out of the 70’s next to Goblin’s Dawn Of The Dead work. The opening theme has a creepy organ sound that blends the sound of the 70’s and yet also mixes in the eerie feel of the 60’s horror score music. The soundtrack has been released on vinyl and CD, and both are pretty much out of print and fetch a very high price in the used market. I was lucky to find a special edition CD release for Phantasm that puts the scores for the first and second film on one CD-R and play the main title during the Halloween show of Alpha Rythms on WYSO. If you’re a music score fan and have extra cash, you should check out this soundtrack as it’s worth buying and listening to.

Back in 2011 as part of the podcast Gutter Trash’s Halloween special, I was asked to be a guest to review Phantams alongside hosts Jason Young and Eric Shonborn, and wow was it a fun time! We ate take out Chinese food and watched the film over at Eric’s house and after the film recorded the podcast in the Gutter Trash studio….and I was the only one trying to defend it! It was a great time, and if you want to take a trip to the past and listen to some movie and comic geeks chat about Phantasm and other topics, make sure to give it a listen here.

So we are now in the heart of this Horror Comic Mortuary where good scary comics go to die, and it’s my job to bring them back to life and share them with you my readers – I should warn you that I have had to dodge so many Lurkers who have tried to stop me! I want to thank an Ebay seller for having this issue in stock. I also want to also tell you that this Phantasm comic series was planned to be a four issue mini series, but after Xmachina closed up the comic shop, only one issue was released. But I would like to make a prediction that may could come true; Eibon Press, the new amazing Horror Comic Company who is releasing the missing issues from the Xmachina Gates Of Hell comic series, could take the chance and release the remaining issues..again, just a guess that I could be WAY OFF on. As I am writing this, I can hear a Lurker mumbling this, “Remind them that you grade on a star scale of 1 to 4 and are looking for how well the comic stays to the source material, its entertainment value and its art and story.” And that Lurker said it best..let’s move onto the Phantasm comic that is the perfect way to countdown to Halloween with as well as kick off my new themed updates “From Horror Movie To Horror Comic” so dodge the spheres and try to outrun The Tall Man and see what this comic has to offer as this is my first time reading it.

Phantasm01

Phantasm # 1 ***
Released in 2002    Cover Price $4.95    Xmachina Comics    # 1 of 4

Mike is stuck in a world of his memories of his past run-ins with The Tall Man and his strange world and followers. He remembers back to when he was convinced it was all a dream and that his brother Jody died in a car crash and was not taken away by The Tall Man.  He also remembers when The Tall Man took him into his world and he witnessed the bizarre and weird place in between dimensions that he walked between.  He remembers going along with his best friend Reggie and meeting a female survivor named Rocky and how they had to fight to stay alive, and he remembers how The Tall Man removes his brain to show him not all is what it seems…and then he wakes up attached to machines, greeted by a hippie looking doctor named John Andrew Quezada who is dream specialist.  The year is 2047, and he has been studding Mike who he claims has been in a coma since 1979, a year after his brother Jody and friend Reggie were both killed in a car wreck.  He also claims that the world went crazy some years back and that many people went into dream comas and that The Tall Man is something that lives in dreams and only one other person has ever lived this long in a coma. Mike is still young as a serum was used to keep him youthful, and now Quezada wants him to help find a cure for the dream coma that is sweeping the world. The woman who survived is Rocky, and Dr. Quezada puts them both through dream tests that pits them against The Tall Man and his army of minions, but also what ever weapon they dream up to fight him with can be made as the clinic has a weapon manufacturing room! In one of his dream tests Mike has his own mind taking the appearance of Reggie telling him that this is all a trick of The Tall Man to get him and Rocky out of the way so he can spread death around the world and that they must fight back and end The Tall Man’s path of destruction. When he awakens, he questions Quezada who in turns answers questions but soon turns into The Tall Man and along with spheres and his minions attack Mike and Rocky, only for them to run away and smack dab into a twisted grotesque version of The Tall Man…and our story ends.

Just like the movie series this is based on this comic took so many twist and turns and was so odd that it fit perfectly into the world of Phantasm! The plot mixes the elements from the four films and tries to twist Mike’s memories into nightmares and say that he has been in a coma for decades – and that The Tall Man is nothing more than a nightmare man who has infected the sleep world of many people on earth causing ones who dream of him to go into comas…this of course is all a trap as Mike and Rocky, a returning character from the film Phantasm III, soon find out that this clinic to help them is just another sick game being played by their most hated enemy The Tall Man. The things that work the most about this issue are that while you are reading it and being drawn deeper and deeper into the possibility that these nightmares of Mike are what’s causing these major and evil problems, you know in the back of your mind that it has to be the work of The Tall Man as his sinister mind games are on par with the Marvel Comic villain The Red Skull as they both get joy in watching their targets squirm as their twisted plans unfold. Mike is a great character as by the point we join him in this comic issue, he has already been through so much and he seems to be fed up with all the strange and sinister antics he has had to deal with in his young life.  Plus he knows that he is the key that can stop this approaching end of the world, and he is ready to take up the fight! Rocky is also a fighter, and she tries her best to have no fear even when the odds are stacked against her.  The best way to describe her to modern horror comic fans is that she is much like Michonne from The Walking Dead. While we see Reggie and Jody in flashbacks mostly, they are missed in the story, but I have a feeling that later on they would have played a major part in the story. Doctor John Andrew Quezada is one of those characters that from the moment you see him you’re not sure if he can be trusted and after getting to know him a little better you lighten up only to again quickly question his motives…is he good or bad or a pawn of The Tall Man…I can’t say for sure, but by the end of this issue, he sure does seem evil! The Tall Man always seems to be around in this issue whether its in flashback, on TV screens or in person, and he just wants to screw things up and mess with the minds of those who can stop his rampage. Tall Man is always also surrounded by his minions and his spheres making him a major threat. The cover has a dark mood look and for some reason The Tall Man looks like he is part Terminator with his glowing red eye.  The interior art is done by Michael Broom and is creepy and fitting for this style of story based on these characters. The story is well crafted and put together by Stephen Romano, who you could truly tell was a fan of the series.  I wish that Xmachina Comics stayed around longer so that this series could have been finished up and we horror comic readers could have seen how the story played out. Here is to hoping that sometime in the future companies like Eibon Press or Rough House Publishing will pick up the series and put out the remaining three issues in the planned miniseries. Over all, this is a great read and something that fans of the film series should track down as well as horror comic readers. Below is artwork from the comic that shows the badass nature of what this comic has in store, so enjoy!

So I hope you’re not too scared as we have just started with our countdown to Halloween 2016, and I think taking a look at Jaws 2 and Phantasm was the right way to kick off this season. Phantasm is one of those cult classic films that has a loyal fanbase that just cannot be beat, and I for one will always stand by the fact that I am a fan, or as they say Phan, of this film! Our next update is a comic based on another film that I am a super fan of, the 1932 classic film Dracula.  We will be taking a look at the Dark Horse Comic adaptation of that Universal Monster Classic as well as Lugosi’s Dracula and the impact it has had on society.  So make sure to join me back here for that as you will not want to miss it.  Until next time, avoid The Tall Man, watch a horror movie or two, read a horror comic or three and as always support your local Horror Host. Also watch out for flying spheres as they can be a real pain in the neck!
