Matt Goes To The Movies 2025

Happy New Year! And man was last year a great time for seeing films at my favorite local theaters, but to be honest, every time I go to the cinema to see a film on the big screen, it makes for a great year as there is just something so amazing about the theater experience, sitting in the seats with your family and friends with a drink and snack and being taken to a new world in so many different genres. The cinema is a great escape from the stress of the real world and is a great way to unwind. And this year I mostly once again went to see as many horror films as possible but did also watch The Day The Earth Blew Up, Fantastic Four, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts and Karate Kid, all of which I enjoyed in their own ways.

So like last year, I will be sharing my countdown of the best horror films that I saw in the theater, and man, did I see a lot! But again, due to a few ongoing health issues, I did miss a few that I did want to see like Frankenstein, Self Help and Dies Irae to name a few. I also want to thank many of my friends and family that joined me in watching films at Cinemark and Regal Cinemas this year so Juliet, Jeff, Theresa, Dave and Stephen thanks for watching many of these flicks with me on the big screen in ’25.

Let’s dive into the horrors I saw in 2025 in the theater. I was a good year for horror in my opinion as we had many great original scares, foreign frights as well as some franchise returns that brought new life into the legacies. So with that, let me present to you my Countdown of Horror Films I saw in theaters from worst to best, and really besides the film in last place, most of the others that ranked lower are not terrible, they just had lots of competition this year.

A tourist town in Japan known for their hot springs is under attack by sharks that are living in the springs and are coming through the pipes and killing people! The sheriff fails to stop them and is bitten by one and falls very ill with the only cure being from one of the hot springs sharks’ fins. The Japanese government now wants to bomb the town in order to kill the sharks and not allow them to spread. But a wacky female doctor, the town’s Mayor, and Macho a strange body builder get inside of a 3-D printed submarine to go on the attack and save the town from the sharks and being bombed and are also able to get the fin to save the sheriff’s life…they even have a fight with a massive King Hot Spring Shark in order to win the good fight. This is a very silly and low budget horror comedy film from Japan that had a very limited release in America as it showed only once at the local chain theater. The film is very cheesy and the shark attacks are a mix of bad CGI and shark dolls being moved around by actors. The jokes fell flat for the viewers at the theater I saw it with as no on laughed at all. The film stars Shoichiro Akaboshi, Masaki Naito, Mio Takaki and Shigeo Osako to name a few of the film’s cast. The film did okay for Utopia at the domestic box office bringing in $26,260.00. I am not sure but I think that this film might have been crowd funded and for me was just sort of an unfunny, cheesy dud.

In 1928 Emma Schmidt has been possessed by demons and is in need of help and the church of Father Joseph Steiger has been selected to house the young woman’s exorcism that will be done by Father Theophilus Riesinger. But this small Iowa church is not ready for the evil that has arrived as nuns are getting injured, the townspeople are getting scared and Father Joseph is losing grip on his mind and faith. But when the church comes together, they are able to defeat these demons who are many from Judas to Beelzebub to save this woman’s soul. This film is based on the real story of Emma Schmidt, who had one of the biggest and well documented true exorcisms in American history that spawned many films in the horror genre, but the issue is that it brings nothing new to possession films and truly has a been there and seen that feel as even the jump scares have a familiar feel. The film stars such actors as Al Pacino, Dan Stevens, Patricia Heaton, Ashley Greene, Patrick Fabian and Abigail Cowen with many being good in their roles…Pacino not being one of them. The film had a limited release and did okay at the domestic box office bringing in $527,118.00 on an unknown budget for XYZ Films. Over all this was not a bad film, just a very middle of the road one that brings some cheap scares and another possession films to cinemas and home media for fans of that sub genre in horror.

Abraham Van Helsing, along with his wife Mina and two sons Max and Rudy, has moved away from England to America to escape as he thinks that the vampires are after them and that Dracula might have returned and wants revenge. Along the way he has also left a trail of dead bodies, all of whom he claims were vampires. But when Mina passes away, his son Max starts to question his father’s sanity and if there really are vampires or if he has been killing innocent people for all these years. When Abraham sets his sights on killing a camp of railroad workers that he claims are infected, Max must make a decision to join his father’s quest or put a stop to him once and for all. This vampire film is based on a short story by Joe Hill and is a weird twist on the Dracula story and makes you question the acts and ways of Van Helsing, and while an interesting concept, this film is a very slow burn with a middle of the road twist that I was able to spot very early into the film. The film is well acted with such names as Titus Welliver, Brady Hepner, Judah Mackey, Jocelin Donahue and Aurora Perineau being the main cast. The film had a limited release and did ok for RLJE Films at the domestic box office bringing in $212,706.00 on an unknown budget. If you like slow burn horror films with a dash of vampire lore surrounding mostly one location with a twist to the Dracula story, then check this one out.

Kris and Celina have a internet show where they visit haunted locations along with their camera man Jay. As a surprise, Kris does not take the group to a haunted cemetery that they thought they were going, but instead takes them to a haunted house in the middle of woods that no one has covered yet called the House On Eden. They discover that the house is in perfect shape with no dust on the furniture, but it does not have electricity or running water and once inside strange things start to happen like Kris blacking out and Celina talking in strange ways. Finally Kris learns that she is not alone as Celina and Jay go missing and that she is in the house of Lilith, who is looking for be reborn and claim her unborn child as her own, and she has a cult of followers to help her claim what she wants. This is a found footage horror film that is written, directed and starring YouTuber Kris Collins as well as fellow social media stars Celina Myers, Jason-Christopher Mayer and even has cameos from Sam Golbach and Colby Brock and is clearly influenced by The Blair Witch Project as well of the story of the Garden Of Eden and Lilith. The film has some good jump scares, cool old house setting and a likable cast of characters. I would like to see Kris do more horror films in the future and see how she will grow as a genre director and creator. The film had a limited release and did well for IFC Films bringing in $455,830.00 on an unknown budget. A cool first film that should please fans of found footage paranormal films as well as those of you who like ghost hunting shows on social media as this is a mix of scares as well as a dash of humor at the start before going full horror by the end.

Actress Lauren Lane is loved by the American people as she has grown up before their eyes on one of the most popular sitcoms on TV, but she is finding herself in some controversy when her personal accounts are hacked and sexy images as well as a picture of a positive pregnancy test have caused her to be the target of the media who wants answers as to who the father is. To get away from it all, she, along with her pet dog, head to a remote Air BNB in the woods to get away from the drama, only for her to find herself in danger as the baby’s father has hired a man to kill her so as to not ruin his career as he is connected to the young actress via the TV Show. She has three thieves that have broken in to try and steal, her dog is injured and rescued by a store clerk and the cops are trying to figure out what is going on…oh and poor Lauren is trapped in a room that has bad wiring and it is filling up with water. Can Lauren survive or will this be her final curtain call. This is a pretty average and yet entertaining thriller that has a bunch of characters that all end up in the same location and all hell breaks loose and the bad people get what is coming to them and the good survive…well, mostly. The film is well cast and stars such names as Sophie Turner, Katey Segal, Peter Mensah and Billy Campbell to name a few. The film had a limited release and did okay for Republic Pictures bring in $368,186.00 on an unknown budget. If you like Sophie Turner or enjoy thrillers where your lead is in lots of trouble then check this one out.

Scott is a comic book artist who lives in a big fancy home in Hollywood with his wife Liv and daughter Chloe, and things get really bad for them as they have rats in the walls and have to call in a creepy exterminator, the next door neighbor Trip has ladies of the night come visiting, a massive storm has came through and knocked out their power and worse they are no trapped inside their home as a wild pack of coyotes are on the attack and killing any person or animal that is getting in their way and the house next door is on fire with the flames spreading! Scott must get over his weakness of seeing blood and must do what he can to save his family in this horror comedy that stars the likes of Justin Long, Kate Bosworth, Mila Harris, Brittany Allen and Norbert Leo Butz. The film is an animal attack one with the coyotes ripping into human flesh and even hunting people down in their own homes and is filled with some fun bloody effects. The downside is that some of the humor falls flat, it should have been a little shorter and the ending is a little silly. I also have to say the exterminator is supposed to be a big part of the comedy, but I just found him to be a jerk and annoying. The film had a limited release and did ok for Aura Entertainment at the domestic box office bringing in a so-far unannounced amount on an unknown budget. If you like animal attack films with a dash of humor and Justin Long, give this one a watch.

As a kid, Blake Lovell lived on a farm with his father in the middle of nowhere. His father was very strict with him as the woods around their placed seemed to have been stalked by a missing hiker who got a disease called Hills Fever that turned him into an animalistic ravenger that acted like a wild wolf. Decades later Blake must return to his fathers farm after he has gone missing and been declared dead by the state. He brings along his wife Charlotte and daughter Ginger, only for them to be attacked by a strange beast man who infects Blake with a scratch giving him Hills Fever. Now he must fight not only to stay alive and keep his wits but also to get his family away from the farm house and to safety. Will Blake be able to save them or will the beast man outside rip them apart or will Blake become a beast himself? Watch this Universal Monster remake and find out for yourself. I’m not going to lie, this was very much a big letdown for me as I am a fan of the Universal Monsters with The Wolf Man being my favorite, not to mention I really liked writer and director Leigh Whannell’s take on the Invisible Man in 2020, but his version of The Wolf Man is a mostly boring lackluster fright film with only a few moments of creepiness and even some bland acting in spots. The Wolf Man in the film is not so much a werewolf as it’s a person infected with a disease that makes them into a beast like person who takes on some elements of a wolf, and while the effects of the “werewolves” are not great, they are not as bad as others have said. The cast was all right with actors like Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, Matilda Firth and Sam Jaeger being the leads, and while I don’t mind actress Julia Garner, at times in this film her acting was like a cardboard box. The film did not do well for Universal at the domestic box office bringing in $20,707,280.00 on a budget of $25 million. Word of mouth hurt the box office of this film and I hope that it does not also hurt more Universal Monster films being reimagined in the future as I really do think Whannell and Blumhouse dropped the ball here. While not a totally bad movie and it is one I will watch again, I would just say I wish it was better and less of a letdown.

Cam Cade has been pushed into football by his late father and grew up idolizing Isaiah White, the quarterback for the Saviors who has won 8 rings and has overcome many injuries to become the greatest of all time. Cam is now slated to be the next big QB in football but is attacked before the draft and left with a brain injury and is passed on, only for White to take a chance on him wanting to privately train with him to give him a chance at playing for the Saviors as he might be retiring. But soon Cam finds that this is more like a cult and weird things are going on all around him with some pushing him to go forward and others telling him to run away as people are being hurt, he is cut off from his family and keeps getting strange injections. Will Cam become the next big football star or will he get away from this strange group that are being the Saviors franchise? Watch this weird Jordan Peele produced film and find out! This really is a horror film that blends football, a cult, having a message, being a little silly, arty shots and some blood splatter all together to make a weird hybrid that was meet with mix reviews from viewers and critics. The film has a good cast with such names as Tyriq Withers, Marlon Waynes, Julie Fox, Jim Jefferies and Don Benjamin making up some of the leads. This film did okay for Universal at the domestic box office bringing in $25,009,605.00 on a budget of $27 million. I enjoyed the film for the most part but did find it also a little boring in spots as well as goofy as a character screaming “I Am Football” during a fight to the death really is one of the goofiest bits of dialogue I had heard in 2025.

Eva is a young woman who is in charge of a fishing outpost as well as the ship and its crew after her husband passed away during a fishing outing, and worse the season has been rough with food and catching being very low. One day Eva and the fisherman make a grim decision to not rescue any survivors from a boat they see that is sinking in the distance, and only after a day passes do they journey out when they find a barrel of salt pork washed ashore…but once near the wreckage the crew of the sinking ship appear and try to get aboard looking for help but they are beaten and left in the water by Eva and her crew…killing them as their bodies wash ashore later and this causes superstition to run wild at the fishing outpost of a creature of the sea who would be looking for revenge for the sins they committed and things start to get worse when what food they do have goes missing and members of the outpost are dying. This leaves Eva and what’s left of her fishing crew fighting for their lives and a way to kill this creature that has marked them for death, that is if the creature is real at all and their minds are not just turning on them. This was the first horror film I saw on the big screen in 2025, and it was a very slow burn fright flick that used atmosphere and jump scares to bring the terror. The film is really well shot and the snow covered fishing outpost and the beautiful bay helped add to the dreadful feel of the story. It is also well acted with Odessa Young playing Eva and she was fantastic with other actors as Joe Cole, Lewis Gribben, Michael Og Lane making up some of the other cast. The film had a very limited release and did okay for Theatrical Film Distribution at the domestic box office bring in $1,371,951.00 on an unknown budget. While it’s a slow watch, fans that like folk style horror should enjoy this one.

Eddie Barrish is a man that is down on his luck as he is a repeat criminal who is trying to get his life straight for his daughter, but finds himself short for cash when it comes to getting his car repaired and decides to go and rob cars to find items he can sell. He soon enters a very expensive looking car only to find himself trapped inside it as he is taken prisoner by the car’s owner William who has rigged the car to teach thieves a lesson. Eddie is surrounded by smash proof one way glass with William being able to control the heater, the radio, the AC and more from his phone. He torments Eddie with no food and water and even controls the car to commit a few hit and runs that leaves people dead. As Eddie is injured and weak, he must use his street smarts in order to outsmart William whose end game is the death of Eddie to truly teach him a lesson to honor the memory of his daughter. This is a wild horror thriller that mostly takes place inside of a car where a man is being tortured for trying to steal from it all the while the cars owner is hell bent on watching him suffer in order to teach some sort of twisted message that crime never pays. The film stars Bill Skarsgard as Eddie and Anthony Hopkins as William with other cast members being Ashley Cartwright, Michael Eklund and Navid Charkhi all who do well in their parts. The film did okay for The Avenue Entertainment at the domestic box office bringing in $1,632,758.00 on an unknown budget. This film was produced by Sam Raimi, and fans who like their horror a little claustrophobic should check it out.

Liz is going to a cabin in the woods with her boyfriend Malcolm, who is a doctor and treats her very well. She is having a good time as they have a nice dinner, she meets his weird cousin and his new girlfriend and even has a piece of cake that was made by the caretaker of the cabin…but after eating that cake is when everything seems to start to go wrong for her! Liz is starting to have terrible nightmares, is seeing and hearing things and even has been left alone in the cabin, as Malcolm has to get to the hospital to check on a patient. She soon learns that her perfect relationship might not be so and that she is being prepped for something not so wonderful…what terrors await her in this cabin in the woods and what does Malcolm have to do with them…watch this folk horror film from Osgood Perkins and find out for yourself. This is a slow burn fright film that builds to a pretty cool and creepy ending, but while the ending was good, I did feel the build up was just lacking a little something to make it a true must see classic for me. The creature effects are well done and the setting in the woods adds to the folk horror feel but I for one just did not like the characters as none of them I felt connected to in any way. The film is well casted with such names as Tatiana Maslany, Rossif Sutherland, Birkett Turton, Eden Wiess and Tess Degenstein in the cast. The film did well for Neon at the domestic box office bring in $4,200,165.00 on a budget of $6 million. If you like slow burn folk fright films or just enjoy the work of Osgood Perkins, make sure to give this one a watch.

Dre is holding a drag rave party in New York when all hell breaks loose and a zombie outbreak happens leaving her trapped inside the club with her performers, staff and brother in law as they try and survive the night…but she is also worried about her wife who works at the hospital when she cannot get ahold of her, as in reality she and a patient are on their way to the club, but can any of these members of the LGBTQ+ community and the brother in law survive this night of the undead or will they all be eaten and join the ranks? Watch this horror comedy by Tina Romero, daughter of George A. Romero, and find out for yourself. This is a pretty fun fright film that has likable characters and the classic slow moving zombies that were featured in her father’s films. It even has some nice throw backs to those films in the music and dialogue. The film is a mixed bag of humor with some parts making you laugh with other parts falling flat. The main flaw it has is that at times it drags a little and the zombies are very much a second thought as the focus is the characters and a message about acceptance and the different groups that make up that LGTBQ+ community. The film is well cast with such names as Katy O’Brian, Jaquel Spivey, Jack Haven, Riki Lindhome, Nina West, Tomas Matos and Margaret Cho being some of the main cast. The film did well for IFC at the domestic box office during its limited run bringing in $113,123.00 on an unknown budget. If you enjoy zombie horror comedy films or just want to see a film done by Tina Romero, give this one a watch.

Rosario is a very successful stockbroker who finds out that her grandmother has passed away and during a massive snow storm she must go to her apartment and wait for the ambulance to take the body away. While stuck inside this small apartment, she soon learns that an entity named Kobayende is after her soul as someone in her family may have placed a curse on her that is causing her to see visions of her own dead mother who is hunting her around the apartment. Rosario must dive into the faith of Pola and figure out why and or who has cursed her and find a way to survive until morning as this entity wants what is owed to him. This is a pretty entertaining supernatural fright film that is mostly set inside of a run down apartment building complete with a few weird tenants and a creature that can shape shift into looking like the dead body of a loved one. The film relies heavily on the isolation of the apartment and the bad snow storm outside to make you feel like Rosario really is in a dangerous spot with Kobayende after her very soul. The film is well cast with Emeraude Toubia as Rosario. She is fantastic as are David Dastmalchian, Paul Ben-Victor and Jose Zuniga. The film had a limited release and did ok ayfor Mucho Mas Releasing bringing in $866,466.00 on an unknown budget. Some cool effects, a creepy creature and Emeraude being beautiful is just some of the reasons you should check this one out.

Chloe is a teenage girl who has lost two of her friends to drug overdoses, and while her father is understanding of her pain, her mother and brother are a little less so. When they move into a new home, a presence is around and watches the family as they have personal issues. It also seems to be watching out after Chloe. When a young man keeps coming around who might not have pure intentions towards her, it becomes clear that its not there to harm the family but watch after one of them. But who or what is the presence and what will it do to truly keep Chloe safe? Well watch this Neon horror film that takes place from the point of view of the presence. This is a slow burn horror film that is not about the scares as it’s about the pain of loss as well as how cruel people can be to one another as it also touches on being there for your family during the hard times. The film is well casted with Callina Liang as Chloe being the standout and other cast including Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Eddy Maday, West Mulholland and Natalie Woolams. The film also does something very interesting as it all takes place from the view of the presence so we see what it sees and know what it knows. The film did well for Neon at the domestic box office on its limited release bringing $6,900,044.00 on a budget of $2 million. This movie is not for everyone as it really is more of a arty style slower paced film, but I found it entertaining and am glad to have seen it on the big screen.

# 40

Violet is a single mother who survived an abusive husband and is finally going on a first date with a man named Henry Campbell (a photographer for the mayor) at a very posh restaurant called Palate, but her date turns deadly when an unknown person keeps dropping her messages that is ordering her to kill her date. She also finds that a masked killer is in her home and if she looks for help, word will be given to kill her son as well as her sister that is babysitting! Violet must play this sick game, all the while trying to figure out who is behind these threats as well as not alerting others to her dilemma as if she fails then those who mean the most to her will die. This is fun thriller horror film that plays sort of like a modern Hitchcock film as it builds the suspense and dread for our main character as she does not want to kill her date but also does not want to lose her son. The film is well cast with such names as Meghann Fahy, Brandon Sklenar, Violett Beane, Reed Diamond, Gabrielle Ryan Spring and Jeffery Self making up the main cast. The film did pretty well for Universal at the domestic box office bringing in $16,600,805.00 on a budget of $11 million. If you like thrillers that is the right amount of suspense as well as a touch of humor, make sure to give this one a watch. Also a cool bonus: when we saw this film, in attendance were the cousins of the film’s writers.

As a child, Bruce Tucker survived a shark attack and now gives swimming with the shark experiences, but he has a truly dark side as he will kidnap two women and then take them out into the ocean and film as he feeds them to the sharks! He is able to capture surfer Zephyr and young lady Heather, and after feeding Heather to the sharks, Zephyr fights to survive. Her new love interest Moses comes looking for her, and they both find themselves at the mercy of Tucker who wants to feed the sharks and make his videos, but will Zephyr become chum in the water or will this surfer girl fight back and let the sharks finish what they started with Tucker those many years ago…watch this horror thriller and find out for yourself. This is a weird and twisted film that is mostly set out at sea as the killer is obsessed with sharks as well as filming the painful deaths of his victims as they are munched on by sharks. It’s almost like he gets off on their screams and the fear in their eyes as he watches the death tapes as he eats his meals. Another weird thing he does is snip off some of their hair in order to use them on lures. The film is well cast and acted with such names as Hassie Harrison, Josh Heuston, Jai Courtney and Ella Newton making up the main cast. The film did well for IFC Films at the domestic box office bringing in $2,733,481.00 on an unknown budget. While this is an entertaining film, it is one that sort of just runs middle of the road that does have an interesting story as well as a crazy killer. I do think you should see it at least once as who knows, this might be the next Wolf Creek for you when it comes to horror set in Australia.

Sergeant Ryan Baker leads a platoon called The Vultures in the Vietnam war with them being sent on high risk rescue missions. When they get sent out to find some missing Green Berets, they soon find themselves in big danger as deep in the jungle they are under attack by a group of Russian soldiers as well as even more deadly dinosaurs and now Ryan and his men must fight for their lives against these deadly beasts as well as try and finish their mission and stop a crazed plot of time portals being done by a crazed Russian general whose motivations are unclear. This is a fun action packed horror film that is like a war film meets Jurassic Park with lots of dinosaurs eating people and soldiers blasting things with their guns while all your typical music used for Vietnam War films (like CCR) plays in the background. The film does have some cool blood deaths, and The Vultures are all likable characters and you can never go wrong with t-rex’s and raptors on a rampage. The film is well cast with such names as Ryan Kwanten, Tricia Helfer, Nick Wchsler, Anthony Ingruber and Jeremy Piven, to name a few. The film did ok for Fathom Events at the domestic box office in a limited run bringing in $1,005,222.00 on a unknown budget. If you like killer dinosaur films or weird war ones, make sure to check this one out.

Maya and her fiancé were attacked by The Strangers, a trio of masked killers, and she is the only survivor who barely escaped with her life. While she’s in the hospital, the trio end up arriving and try to finish her off but Maya is a fighter and ends up escaping the hospital, fleeing through the woods, being attacked by a wild boar, and meeting some locals who may not have her health in mind. All the while she is being stalked by The Strangers who are killing anyone that tries to help her, but in the end Maya is able to take out one of their members, the Pin-Up Girl, as the film leaves us on a cliffhanger for Chapter 3, the final film in this new trilogy. This film is pretty much one big chase scene as Maya is always on the run while the killers are tracking her down wanting to make her dead meat, and it also adds in elements that just maybe The Strangers are connected to a church or religious cult of some kind. But we will not get that answered until the next film. The film is your normal slasher film where the killer(s) play cat and mouse games with their victim and some moments will make you wonder why they’re happing, like the attack and killing of a wild boar. The film stars Madelaine Petsch, Ema Horvath, Rachel Shenton and Gabriel Basso, to name a few and was plagued with bad reviews when released. The film did so-so for Lionsgate at the domestic box office bringing in $15,153,346.00 on a budget of around $8.5 million. While it is a flawed film with some cool kills as well as head scratching moments, it is one that you should check. out if you like the other films in the series.

Riley Brennan is the host of a paranormal YouTube show. Since she was a kid, she has had terrible nightmares and saw a demonic figure through her window always watching her. When she goes missing for 12 years and her crew is found dead, her sister Mia is part of a documentary about the killing and disappearance when a man shows up to her house with a tape from her sisters show and shoots himself dead. Now Mia travels to Shelby Oaks, Ohio to find her missing sister and unfolds a sinister trail that has a demonic being named Tarion that has followed the sisters since their youth, the reason for the man’s suicide, and the reason for her sister’s disappearance.Mia must face her own fears…will she find her sister and if so will she still be alive? Check out the film and find out for yourself. This is a good fright flick that blends both found footage and supernatural horror together and adds some twists as well as turns as well is set in Ohio. The film has a cool demon character in Tarion who lurks around and at times is even played by Derek Mears and it also is well casted with such names as Camille Sullivan, Sarah Durn, Brendan Sexton III, Robin Bartlett, Charlie Talbert and even an appearance by Keith David. Shelby Oaks did well for Neon at the domestic box office bringing in $4,500,051.00 on a budget of around $2.8 million showing that movie goers really do enjoy seeing scares on the big screen. If you like films about found footage as well as a demon who just wants his chaos to continue on by using the young, make sure to check this one out.

Clover and her friends are looking for her missing sister Melanie who has went missing, and the last location she was known to be around is Glore Valley, a strange place that’s town center is surrounded by raging thunderstorms and appears to be deserted, but when a hourglass on the wall turns over on its own, all hell breaks loose as Clover and her friends are killed over and over again by monsters, killers and spirits only to wake back up and repeat the night only gaining some small clues on how to survive as they need to last until dawn on the eleventh night as well as find a way to stop Dr. Hill who is responsible for this hellish nightmare. Will Clover and her pals be able to survive or will they just become more lost souls trapped in this loop of terror, and also will Clover find her sister and discover her fate? This film is based on the popular Playstation video game, but those who are the fans of the game might be a little annoyed as the fright flick swerves very far away from the game’s plot. The film has many gruesome kills and many cool creatures, as they are the highlights for this entertaining fright flick. The film is well cast with such names as Ella Rubin, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, Michael Cimino, Belmont Cameli and Peter Stormare making up the main cast. What works for this film is the setting of a strange town surrounded by bad weather that is populated by a crazed doctor and supernatural killers all looking to kill and strike fear on those foolish enough to enter this cursed forgotten town. The film did ok for Sony at the domestic box office bringing in $20,172,192.00 on a budget of $15 million. While the film got lots of hate from critics on horror news websites, it really was a fun watch in the theater and is one I bought on home media when released.

Elliot Kintner and his daughter Ridley are guests at the Leopold estate that is in the middle of a nature reserve. While driving up they accidentally hit and kill a unicorn and out of fear they hide it in their car and try to act normal, but they also find out that the creature’s blood cures them of small ailments like sinuses and acne. When the unicorn wakes up and the Leopold family find out about the healing properties (that even cures Odell Leopold of his cancer), they want to harvest the creature’s blood and horn shavings as a way to help cure people…well those who can pay lots of money for the limited treatments. But they all soon find themselves in trouble as the unicorn they have is a child and its two very pissed off parents are on a rampage to heal it back to life and get revenge on those who have been keeping it and with Ridley being the only one besides the family butler to see how wrong this all is. She must find a way to save herself and father from the deadly horns of the Unicorns in this A24 horror comedy creature feature. This is a pretty silly and bloody film as the Unicorns impale bodies with their horns as well as use their teeth to rip out the guts of their victims, and the humor is dark at times it brought a few laughs to the almost filled theater. The films unicorns are CGI and are pretty cool looking in my opinion even thought some critics slammed the effects. The film is well cast with such names as Jenna Ortega, Paul Rudd, Richard E. Grant, Tea Leoni, Will Poulter, Jessica Hynes, Sunita Mani and Anthony Carrigan making up the leads. The film did well for A24 at the domestic box office bringing in $12,899,252.00 on a $15 million budget. While this horror comedy might not be for everyone, I found it to be an enjoyable, bloody creature feature that had a few good laughs.

Ambi has lost her husband and has to return to his home town to get his last wish of selling his family manor done, along with her daughter Shweta they face a town that has been plagued with missing young woman who are taken into the jungle and return a few days later very much different as there is talk of a demon that is transforming the girls into his demonic army in order to fight the Goddesses and take over the world! And when this Demon takes Shweta, it is up to Ambi to get the power of the Goddess Kali in order to save her as well as the other girls of the village from his evil clutch as well as end his reign of terror in the village as well as the whole world once and for all. This is a spinoff film from the 2024 Bollywood fright flick Shaitaan and continues the world of demons and black magic and for the most part is a pretty interesting and entertaining film…just not as good as Shaitaan. The Demon whose name is Ambika has a tree like appearance and is creepy, the film does have some deaths and gruesome moments and is well casted with such names as Kajol, Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, Kherin Sharma and Roopkatha Chakraborty all being great in their roles. I will say that I think the film does start off a little slow and builds to a battle between mother and demon that was well done. The film had a limited release in America and for the screening I went to the theater was almost fully packed! This is one I enjoyed and was a demon film that also had some Evil Dead like moments.

A small fishing village in India has been cursed since the 1980’s as any time fishermen head out to sea, they are found washed ashore dead. Now in 2025 the village is getting their money from Thomas, a smuggler from a neighboring village who pays them to work for him. He tells the villagers that they need to sacrifice ladies once in awhile to the spirits in the ocean who are angry. King and his friends once worked for Thomas, but when their young crew member Benji is killed and they find out that they have been smuggling drugs and not sea cucumbers like they were told, they fight against their former boss and set out into the cursed ocean to find out its deep dark secrets that includes a razor teethed zombie ghost, the zombie ghosts of the ladies that have been sacrificed, waves filled with bones and skulls and the true secret of why these waters are cursed and who holds the power to stop it all. Kingston is a cool Bollywood Horror film that has elements of The Fog mixed in to deliver some scares in-between a crime plot that is unfolding and once the film’s setting is switched to a boat on the ocean the pace for the terror really picks up. The zombie ghosts effects are a mix of practical and digital, and they are effective when they appear. I really liked King as well as his crew and lady Rose; they made for a team that I found myself cheering on to make it through this deadly journey. The film is well cast with such names as G.V. Prakash Kumar, Divyabharathi, Chetan, Nithin Sathya and Sabumon Abdusamad making up some of the main cast. The film had a limited theatrical release in America, and I am not sure how well it did at the domestic box office, but seems to have done well overseas. If you like your horror films set in the ocean with evil zombie like spirits on the loose and some musical numbers that will get stuck in your head, give this one a watch.

Riya wakes up injured and with no memory in a space station on another world and finds the bodies of her fellow crew members that all have been murdered with one of them missing. She soon is joined by Brion who claims that she sent out an SOS, but as the stations oxygen levels drop and her memories start coming back, she does not trust her own mind as she thinks she might have been the one that killed them all…but also that there might be an alien life form loose on the ship that might have infected the missing crewmember…but will her memories return in time for her to save herself from the lack of oxygen and the alien…or is she doomed to die like all the others. This is a weird sci-fi horror flick that is a slightly slow burn but does a great job of presenting a mystery that unravels a little at a time as the plot moves forward, and it’s also shot really well and makes great use of lighting and its score. And Spoiler…the alien once inside the body of Brion is really cool a creepy as his head is split and tentacles are flying around. The film is well casted with such names as Eiza Gonzalez, Aaron Paul, Flying Lotus, Kate Elliot, Iko Uwais and Beulah Koale all doing great in their roles. The film had a limited released in America and did okay for RLJE Films bringing in around $1,083,743.00 on an unknown budget. This was a really well done fright film and it was great seeing Juliet jump out of her seat at least three times during the screening, and it’s one I bought when released on home media.

Hank was a high school football star who’s home town is being overran by a plant like organism called Ick that ends up the reason Hank breaks his leg and is forced to stay in the small town and become a science teacher as he lost his cheerleader girlfriend Staci, is battling alcoholism and his father dies of a heart attack. The Ick has now turned deadly and is attacking the locals, and Hank learns that Staci’s teenager daughter Grace could be his and does what he must to save her from The Ick as well as fight back against The Ick who ruined his life and is once more trying to take everything from him. This sci-fi comedy horror film is very much inspired by The Blob and has some pretty gruesome deaths as well as likable characters making for a very fun watch. The film is also filled with songs from 2000’s bands like Creed, Blink 182 and All American Rejects and is well casted with such names as Brandon Routh, Mena Suvari, Malina Weissman, Jeff Fahey and Taia Sophia all who do great jobs. The film had a limited release and did well for Fathom Events at the domestic box office as it brought in unknown profits on a unknown budget. If you like sci-fi horror that has comedy mixed in, make sure to check this one out.

Max is a 15 year old girl who has a hard time fitting in as she is quiet and into performing magic tricks. On Halloween night she is mocked by her fellow classmates and ends up being entwined with The Jester, a demonic being that is going around collecting souls that he shows a magic trick to, and after Max gets him with a trick, he has to have her with him to pull off the collecting as they both have to do so before a candle runs out or they are doomed to burn. Max must play his game and lead people to their deaths via tricks, all the while trying to figure out how to beat The Jester at his own game. This is a fun indie slasher film that takes place during Halloween, and this makes it feel like a more bloody version of a Goosebumps or Are Your Afraid Of The Dark episodes. The Jester is very much cut from the same villain cloth as Art The Clown from Terrifier as he is a mute killer that pantomimes his sinister deeds, and I will say I really liked the Max character as I felt bad for her as so many people were just mean to her for no reason. The film is well casted with such names as Kaitlyn Trentham, Michael Sheffield, Dingani Beza and Jessica Ambuehl in main roles and all doing a great job. The film did alright for Fathom Events during its limited run in the theaters bringing in unknown profits on a unknown budget. If you liked the original film or just enjoy modern slashers, give this one a watch.

Quinn Maybrook and her father have moved to Kettle Springs after her mother passed away from a drug overdose, she soon starts a friendship with Cole and his friends who make horror themed internet videos based around Frendo, the clown mascot for the town’s old corn syrup brand called Baypen. But one night Quinn and her friends become the target for a batch of masked Frendo killers who are out to slaughter them as this town’s mascot is not to be mocked as it has it crazed followers who want things to remain the same…can Quinn and her friends survive this clown massacre or will she be just another victim of this town’s dirty little secret that has been going on for decades? Give this slasher film a watch and find out for yourself. This is based on the book of the same name that was written by Adam Cesare and does a good job of following it. It’s rated R and packs in some bloody kills as well as clown masked killers that I am sure will chill some viewers’ blood. The film is well cast with Katie Douglas, Cassandra Potenza and Verity Marks stealing the show and Carson MacCormac, Vincent Muller, Aaron Abrams, Will Sasso and Kevin Durand all being fantastic as well. The film did well for RLJ Entertainment bringing in $7,251,799.00 at the domestic box office on a budget of only $1 million. If you like the book, like slasher films with masked killers, like horror films geared toward young adults that still have a R rated bite, then check this one out.

Kids are going missing being taken by Peter Pan who claims that he is taking them to Neverland, a place they will never grow up as he will also call and taunt their families. It’s clear that Peter is targeting LGBTQ children who are little boys and to get some of them, he will kill their family as well as other children that do not fit his requirements. When Peter ends up kidnapping young Michael Darling, he learns that his older sister Wendy will not stop until she finds him, and the two have a massive fight in Peter’s drug den home as this scared up killer does not want his delusions and fantasy to be disrupted. This is part of the Poohverse and is an off shoot of Winnie The Pooh Blood And Honey as at some point the two will crossover. Peter Pan is a creepy slasher villain who is clearly insane, as he likes to kill and be around small children and will even make weird voices at time. The film also has a trans drug addict Tinker Bell and a tortured victim in the basement with a hook for a hand that is this twisted world’s version of Captain Hook. The film is also pretty bloody and does borrow some elements from Black Phone and Terrifier. The film is well cast with Martin Portlock as Peter Pan, Kit Green as Tinker Bell and Megan Placito as Wendy Darling who is a pretty cool final girl, and I for one would love to see Placito in more horror movie roles. The film did pretty well for Iconic Events Releasing at the domestic box office for its limited release bringing in around $230,515.00 on a budget of around £250,000. While not a groundbreaking fright flick, it was a fun one to see on the big screen.

Jason is 24 years old and is returning to be a counselor at Camp Pineway. He is the oldest one and is pretty much considered a dork by his team and that is only by the ones who remember him! But things get really bad for the counselors when a killer in a devil mask starts killing them off one by one and poor Jason is blamed for being the killer and must find the courage to be the lead counselor and save the lives of his fellow co-workers as well as clear his name of being the killer. But can Jason be the hero he wants to be and will be able to stop the killer of killers on the loose? This is pretty fun horror comedy that has some silly laughs mixed in the slasher kills and while it does have some blood being spilled, it’s really not that gory of a fright flick so don’t expect a Friday The 13th style body count or amount of splatter. The film is well acted and the cast is great that includes Fred Hechinger, Abby Quinn, Billy Bryk, Finn Wolfhard, Julia Lalonde and Pardis Saremi being only some of the talents in the film. The film did well for Neon at the American box office bringing in $3,182,678.00 on a budget of $3 million once more showing indie horror is a draw at theaters. If you like horror comedies, make sure to check this one out. It is one I got on home media when released.

The Long Walk has 50 boys from all the United States walking for hundred of miles nonstop while being televised to bring up the American spirit. The walkers are given no breaks and must keep a pace of 3 miles per hour, and worse they have the military following them and The Major giving them pep talks…and if a boy gets three warnings or breaks the rules, they are shot dead as only one can win the prize. All the boys have their reasons to want to win the walk and among them is Ray who ends up making friends with a boy named Peter as the two watch out for one another as others are dying around them. Who will win this long walk and in the end what will be their big wish? Watch the film and find out. This is a good thriller film that is a character piece as along this walk of death and glory, we get to meet a group of boys who all come from different backgrounds who end up becoming friends, having bonds and then having to watch as members are killed off one by one and each death seems to bring on more dread as the numbers drop and you as a viewer realize that your favorite character could be next. The film is well cast with such actors as Cooper Hoffman, David McVries, Ben Wang, Garrett Wareing, Joshua Odjick, Mark Hamill and Judy Greer to name a few. The film did not great for Lionsgate at the domestic box office bringing in $35,163,573.00 on a budget of $20 million. If you like the more character driven thriller stories of Stephen King as this film is based off his novel of the same name, check this film out.

Billy Chapman lost his parents at a young age when they were killed by Charlie, a man dressed as Santa Claus on their way home from visiting his grandpa who lived in a retirement home. When the killer is also killed and Billy touches the dying man, he becomes a killer himself as the voice of Charlie drives him to hunt and kill selected people that are killers themselves! Billy ends up meeting Pamela and falls in love with her and is torn between continuing his bloody work or settling down, but his secret to her exposed when killer The Snatcher kills her father and Billy takes her with him to get revenge. This film is lots of blood splattered fun and is like if you mixed Silent Night Deadly Night with Dexter and Venom as our killer Billy only kills the bad people and also has a inner voice that guides him. And it’s weird, this version of Billy is more grounded and just knows that he has been selected to kill bad people via the month of December and also his own parents were killers and he has no brother Ricky. The film is well casted with such names as Rohan Campbell, Ruby Modine, David Tomlinson, Mark Acheson and David Lawrence to name a few and all who do well with what they are given. The film did ok for Iconic Events Releasing at the domestic box office on its limited release bringing in $1,495,324 on an unknown budget. If you are looking for a straight up slasher, you might be a little annoyed by the more goofy supernatural elements, but if you are looking for something goofy to watch or love the other Silent Night sequels, check it out!

Doug and his friends Griff, Kenny and Claire made and watched many horror films growing up and now all of them have hit a rut in their lives, and they decide to remake one of their favorite films Anaconda and even raise a small budget and head to the jungles and waters of the Amazon! But the friends soon find themselves being hunted by a truly massive anaconda snake as well as being involved with some gold smugglers who are being tracked by the police, and all the while all they want to do is survive and make their movie. This is a really fun, silly, action packed fright flick that did a fantastic job of bringing this film franchise back to the big screen and introduce it to a whole new audience. And while there are some that have grumbled that the film is a comedy with horror elements, it really is an entertaining film with likable characters, plus the story of friends making movies together hit home for this aging SOV filmmaker. The film has a great cast the includes Jack Black, Paul Rudd, Steve Zahn, Thandiwe Newton, Daniela Melchior and Selton Mello with cameos from Ice Cube and Jennifer Lopez the stars of the original film. The film did well for 20th Century Films at the domestic box office bringing in (as of this update’s posting) $29,571,097 on a budget of around $45 million. If you like giant snake films that packs both laughs and scares give this one a watch.

As things get bad, Abby her brother Mike and ex-cop Vanessa, the daughter of William, must find a way to stop this slaughter while trying to make contact with the original animatronics that had the souls of the killed children in order to fight these more advanced killer bots. Will they be able to stop The Marionette or will the town be doomed for crimes of the past done by one madman who ran a pizza parlor and served murder on the side? The film did well for Universal at the domestic box office bringing in $121,162,630.00 on a budget of around $51 million showing that Blumhouse had a few good hits this year. This is one I will pick up once released on physical media.

Indy is a dog whose owner Todd that is very sick with a terminal lung illness that has him deciding to live in his grandfathers old home in the middle of the woods. His sister does not agree with this move and she even teases him about it being haunted. As time passes, Indy starts seeing a black shaped figure as well as the ghost of Todd’s grandfather’s missing dog. As his master keeps getting sicker and sicker, Indy does what he must in order to try and save Todd from the unknown all the while having to face that nothing can stop death. This is a haunted house film through the eyes of a dog and is filled with some spooky jump scares as well as some sad and depressing moments. The fact that a dog is the main actor in the film and is not a trained actor dog makes this even more of a fun watch as he does such a great job, as does the human cast who are the following actors Shane Jensen, Arielle Friedman, Stuart Rudin and Larry Fessenden, and I also want to say Max ,who played the Grandfather’s dog Bandit also did fantastic. It has a short run time that makes it move along pretty fast and the use of typical fright backgrounds like thunderstorms and a graveyard help build the creepiness. The film did well for IFC during its limited release bringing in $6,624,062.00 on an unknown budget. If you like your horror films with dogs as lead characters make sure to check this one out.

Millie and Tim are a couple that end up moving to a small town, as she is a teacher and found a job and he is a musician who is dealing with some issues after he found his father dead and rotting and his mother mentally broke. As their bodies start merging and melting together, the couple has to figure out a way to stop it as well as why it’s happing, but will they be able to stop it or will two become one? This is a weird and entertaining body horror film that has interesting characters and some cool effects and once more shows that Neon is a player in the world of Indie horror. The film stars Alison Brie, Dave Franco, Damon Herriman and Mia Morrissey all of whom are fantastic in their roles and help add to the strange events of the film that is unfolding. The film did well for Neon at the domestic box office bringing in $21,273,159.00 on a budget of $17 million. If you like body horror that also has a weird religious cult, make sure to check this one out.

Ramona lives out on a farm with her kids Taylor and Ramona, and things are a little sad as David, the father, has passed away in a car wreck, but things get spooky for them when a woman dressed in all black and her face covered appears in their yard. As time passes she keeps getting closer, and strange things start happening in the house as Ramona and Taylor clash over what to do as his mother’s behavior is off and its clear that this woman in the yard is up to no good. Soon the family is tormented by this dressed in black woman who can use her shadow to slay animals, cause destruction and sneak into places where it can be cast to torment the family as she is on a mission to get to Ramona and cause her to do a life altering act that will change the course of the family forever. This is a pretty good horror thriller that deals in many deep subjects like grief, depression, suicide and trust and ties it around a supernatural element with The Woman In The Yard who on this day is the source of all the families issues coming to the surface. This film is well cast and the short list of actors that appear include Danielle Deadwyler, Peyton Jackson, Estella Kahiha, Russell Hornsby and Okwui Okpolwasili as The Woman, and they all do great jobs in their roles. The film has a few jump scares but really plays off the fear of events that you cannot change. The film did well for Universal at the domestic box office bringing in $22,405,985.00 on a budget of $12 million. This film again deals with dark subject matter like suicide so it will not be for all viewers, but it is one I bought when released on home media as I thought it was a spooky little PG-13 fright film.

Vyom is a paranormal investigator, who is hired to look into strange suicides that are taking place at a medical collage as the deaths are very gruesome and the bodies show signs of fast decay and rumors of an evil spirit starts to spread around the campus and town. During his investigation, he gets the help of Anthony, a worker at the collage, and meets Avanthika, a PHD student teacher who seems to be a target for this paranormal madness that is tied into the collages library, its past as a church, medical experiments done with sound, hidden secrets, lies, torture, disabled youth, music and bats! Can Vyom crack this case and find out what this spirit or spirits want, or will more deaths happen until their from beyond message is heard? Watch his fun Bollywood fight flick and find out for yourself. This is a really fun and spooky film that brings in ghosts, bats, black magic and a haunted location together to deliver its story of tragedy and sadness with a pretty good hero who is strong willed and keeps at his task until he can solve the case. The film is well cast with such names as Aadhi Pinisetty, Lakshmi Menon, Simran, Redin Kingsley and Rajiv Menon all in featured roles and all do great work. The film does have some musical numbers but they are not ones that feature the characters as are more used to push along the story in almost montages, and many of the effects are done by digital with the colony of bats being the most obvious. The film had a limited release in America ,and I am not sure how well it did her at the domestic box office. If you like supernatural horror films from India, make sure to give this one a watch as it was a fun one.

Ariel Ecton is a young journalist who is working for a magazine and is looking for her big break in order to get the fame in order to write books and novels, and she is shocked when she is selected to attend a listening party for iconic musician Alfred Moretti, who disappeared 27 years ago and is back with a new album. Ariel is joined by her boss as well as other journalists of all types from TV to social media and she soon finds that this is going to be one weird experience as Moretti is living in a compound with a cult that are called the Levelists. And the journalists start to go missing, Moretti and the cult keep getting weirder and it’s clear to Ariel that this gathering is much more that just a listen party as something sinister is going on and she must find a way to escape this cult in order to tell her story to the world. This is a strange and fun horror film that has a dash of comedy that really works well together as it brings a celebrity twist to the idea of a cult and the quest that people who are creative strive to make their masterpiece. The film is well casted with Ayo Edebiri who plays Ariel being the standout and rest of the cast including John Malkovich, Amber Midthunder, Juliette Lewis, Murray Barlett, Stephanie Suganami as well as the others all being outstanding as well. The film also has a great score and some fun songs done by Malkovich as the Moretti character that will get stuck in your head. The film did ok for A24 at the domestic box office bringing in $1,993,397.00 on a budget of $10 million. This is one that for some reason was met with mix reviews, but is one that I really enjoyed and bought even when released on home media.

Ally is having a rough time as she has broken up with her boyfriend and her job is in trouble for a jewelry company as her ad campaign has caused bad responses. It’s Valentines Day and she meets Jay Simmons a man who has been hired to help her get things back on track, and the two end up being the target for the Heart Eyes Killer (HEK) who goes around killing couples on this holiday in different states every year. While Ally and Jay are not a couple, they are mistaken for one and must fight back against this masked killer, confront their growing feelings for one another as well as just survive this terrible night filled with love and slaughter. This is a fun romantic comedy horror film that is brought to you by some of the same people who made such films as Happy Death Day and Werewolves Within, and it does a great job of blending all the genres together. The masked Heart Eyes Killer has a cool look and is pretty menacing with his knives and mini crossbow, and it does have some pretty gruesome deaths that spill blood on the scenes. The film is well cast with such names as Olivia Holt, Mason Gooding, Jordana Brewster, Devon Sawa, Gigi Zumbado and Latham Gaines all who did great in their roles. The film did well for Sony at the domestic box office bringing in $30,415,738.00 on a budget of $18 million. A fun slasher with some romance that is worth checking out if you enjoy your horror with some laughs.

Gemma is now spending her time to try and rope in AI and robotic usage among companies as well as kids, and this is causing her niece Cady lots of annoyance. But when a combat robot made from the same designs for M3GAN named AMELIA goes rogue and is committing murder and killing all those who were responsible for her production, Gemma must rebuild M3GAN who is the only one that might be able to defeat this was machine. But can Gemma trust M3GAN who is still very loyal to Cady and protecting her? Has M3GAN learned from her past programed mistakes? And who or what is behind AMELIA? Well I am not going to tell you as you need to checkout this fun sequel for yourself and find out! I really enjoyed this film and found it to be a good mix of horror, sci-fi, action and comedy and the character of M3GAN shows growth and goes from a robotic terror to a robotic hero of sorts. The film has some cool kills as well as some weird moments that should please fans of the original who don’t mind that the horror aspects are being shared with other genres. The film is well casted with many returning faces like Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Arnie Donald, Jenna Davis, Jen Van Epps and Brian Jordan Alvarez with new names like Ivanna Sakhno, Jemaine Clement, Timm Sharp and Aristotle Athari all doing great in their parts. The film did well for Universal at the domestic box office bringing in $24,101,280.00 on a budget of around $25 million. I am looking forward to a M3GAN 3 and also got on home media once released, also for some reason this film faced lost of negative vibes before it was even released, but as always, don’t listen to critics or online views, check it out for yourself.

Winston Gooze is a man that is down on his luck his girlfriend passed away and he is raising her son Wade as his own, he is a janitor for an enhancement drug company, the place that he lives is being bullied by a crime lord to sell the property and he also has found out he is dying from a brain ailment! And when he finds that the companies insurance will not cover his medical treatments, he tries to steal money from them and ends up being shot, killed and dumped in water along with his radioactive mop where he becomes mutated and is called the Toxic Avenger as he runs around defeating crime as well as tries to bring down his old boss who himself becomes a hideous deformed monster of superhuman size and strength and also must save his son who has been kidnapped as well as work alongside an activist who is trying to also expose the drug company for the liars and killers they are. This is a super fun and gory remake of the Troma cult classic film that brings a new character into the Toxic Avenger name and allows him to try and clean up his city from the crime and greed of big business. The film would have such names as Peter Dinklage, Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Taylour Paige, Jacob Tremblay, Julia Davis and Luisa Guerreiro in the main cast. The film had a limited Unrated release in theaters and did pretty well for Iconic Events Releasing bringing in $2,866,783.00 on an unknown budget. While not as good as the original film, this splatter funfest holds its own and is one that I say you should check out if you like your horror films mixed with humor and over the top violence.

Iris is a companion robot to Josh and they are invited to stay a weekend at his friend Kat’s boyfriends Sergey house in the woods near a lake and miles away from people. But things get crazy when Iris ends up killing Sergey after he comes on to her forcefully and she is quickly shutdown and tied up so that the police can be called and she can be arrested for her crime…but soon Iris finds that she has been set up by Josh as he hacked her programing and caused her to kill to defend herself, and now Iris must get away from the crime scene and her one time lover and his friends before she is shutdown for one final time. This film has lots of bloody fun moments, as it’s a horror sci-fi film that has some gruesome kills, a likable main character even if she is a robot and some caring and humorous moments. The idea of a companion sex robot finding her inner strength and joy of being a living being and fighting back against her abusive, controlling and greedy ex-owner is something to behold. Sophie Thatcher is fantastic as Iris and the rest of the cast that includes such actors as Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Gullen, and Rupert Friend. The film did pretty well for New Line Cinema at the domestic box office bringing in $20,809,101.00 on a budget of around $10 million. If you like weird horror films that feature a robot as the main character who is both beautiful and likable, make sure to give Companion a watch.

Ava and her friends Danica, Teddy, Milo and Stevie are hanging out on the 4th of July in 2024 when at a Dead Man’s curve in the road they pull over to watch the fireworks and goof around and by doing so they cause an accident that has a man named Sam Cooper to wreck and die as his truck goes over the cliff. And they swear to cover it all up with the help of Teddy’s father who is a very rich man. But the next year Daniaca gets a card that alerts her that some one knows what they did last summer during her bridal shower, and now the friends have to come back together to figure out who is threatening them and later killing them off one by one! And they end up getting the help of Julie James and Ray Bronson who survived killing very similar back in 1997, but who is this killer and why are they wearing a fisherman coat and armed with a hook and spear gun and why are they killing the friends as well as others around town? Well watch this fourth film in the series and find out for yourself as the killer might just shock you. This was such a fun throwback film as I feel that the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” films are in the same league as “Scream” when it comes to iconic horror film franchises that were spawned in the 90’s. The film as some good kills, and I have to say it was great seeing Jennifer Love Hewitt as Julie James on the big screen again as it was nice seeing actors like Freddie Prinze Jr., Brandy Norwood and Sarah Michelle Gellar return as well as new faces like Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline and Sarah Pidgeon being wonderful fresh new faces to the series with Cline having a Florence Pugh charm to her and for me that’s fantastic. The film did well for Sony at the domestic box office bringing in $32,165,634.00 on a budget of $18 million. The film leaves itself open for a sequel and more Julie James, and I am here for it and am looking forward to it if it happens.

Can Alok and Tadaka’s love bring peace and a new balance to the blood drinkers or will they be a tragedy at the hands of Yakshasan and his followers? Watch this super fun horror comedy and find out for yourself. Thamma was truly one of my favorite Bollywood Horror Films I saw this year as it had lots of cool vampire moments, catchy songs as well as truly was funny in spots as the moviegoers as well as myself laughed out loud several times. The film is well cast with such names as Rashmika Mandanna, Ayushmann Khurrana, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Paresh Rawal and even cameos from Varun Dhawan and Adhishek Banerjee from Bhediya (2022). And I have to say that actress Rashmika Mandanna is absolutely beautiful and I could not take my eyes off her in this film. The film had a limited release in America and did well. I wish this one as well as several other Bollywood Horror films would get released on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Ed and Lorraine Warren have stepped away from investigating hauntings and possessions after Ed’s heart attack and are spending their time together as well as giving lectures while their daughter Judy, who is having visions like her mother, is gearing up for her wedding with her fiancé Tony. But the Warrens are sucked back into the supernatural game when the Smurl Family from Pennsylvania are experiencing a very violent haunting that ends up even taking the life of one of their friends as this spirit is using three other spirits to get at the family as well as lure the Warrens back as this spirit has unfinished business with them and wants Judy that it has tagged since her birth. Can The Warren’ finish this final case and come out alive? Will the Smurl Family survive this haunt? Will this evil demon get what it wants? Watch this fourth and final film in the Conjuring series and find out for yourself. What a nice ending to the story of The Warrens as they come together as a loving family to defeat a very dangerous spirit and its minions in a battle of good and evil. Plus it was great to see many returning faces from the series past both human and demons making it feel like a twisted family reunion. The film has a few good jump scares, some cool bloody effects and mean looking demons. The film is well cast with Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Mia Tomlinson, Ben Hardy, Beau Gadsdon and Steve Coulter all who are fantastic in their roles. The film did great for New Line Cinema at the domestic box office bringing in $177,753,512.00 on a budget of $55 million. While New Line Cinema will forever be the House That Freddy Built, in more modern times The Conjuring Universe have made upgrades and keep the lights on. This is one I bought when it was released on home media.

Spike is a 12 year old boy who is about to leave the safety of his island home with his father Jamie who is a scavenger for the town bringing back supplies, and his poor mother Isla has an unknown illness that leaves her confused and with terrible headaches and nose bleeds. And on his first time off the island Spike is able to kill one slow moving infected but chokes when he and his father are chased by a pack of them. But he and his father do make it back to the island after being chased by an Alpha infected, and Spike seeing a massive fire set off in the distance showing life is still going on in the mainland. And when Spike finds out that his father might be lying to him about things on his mother’s illness and that the fire that he seen was made by a doctor, he sneaks himself and his mom off the island to get her help. But Spike learns that the mainland is a very dangerous place filled with the infected, scared & crazy people and that some illnesses just cannot be cured. This is the third film in the 28 Days Later series and the first in a new trilogy and brings another intense virus infected scares and gross moments to viewers while showing how the living would have to adapt to this new cruel world. I really enjoyed the mood and feel of this story with my only big complaint being the silly ending of flipping and flopping cult members fighting the infected. The film did well at the domestic box office bringing in $70,446,897.00 on a budget of $60 million showing that these classic film series still have lots of life left in them. I am looking forward to the second part of this new trilogy that will be released in early 2026. This is a film I bought when released on home media.

Stefan Mortensen is a judge who suffers from a massive stroke and is forced to live in a old folks home in order to try and rehabilitate, and he is placed in a room with a old Rugby player who had messed up his hip and knee named Sonny, but soon Stefan learns that the old folks are being tormented by a fellow resident named Dave Crealy who carries a puppet around named Jenny Pen. Dave is a twisted man who has all the staff fooled as he goes around injuring, torturing, setting up and in some cases killing the others around him all the while making them pledge their loyalty to Jenny. Stefan is wheelchair bound and must find a way to fight back against the psycho Dave and avoid the rule of Jenny Pen. This is a really great fright flick that not only has some creepy moments thanks to Dave and his puppet Jenny but also just the horrors of growing old and having health issues. And truly Dave is a evil and sadistic man as he makes those he is tormenting pledge to Jenny and degrades them the whole time. The film is amazingly casted with John Lithgow as Dave Crealy and Geoffrey Rush as Stefan Mortensen, both of course stealing the show with other cast members including Nathaniel Lees, Ian Mune, Irene Wood, Maaka Pohatu among others rounding it out. The film had a limited release and did well for IFC Films at the domestic box office bringing in $43,817.00 on an unknown budget. A very cool indie horror film that I bought once released on home media.

Dek is a runt Predator whose father wants him dead and when trying to kill him, his brother fights for his life and ends up dying and Dek is forced off planet to do a hunt to deem himself worthy as well as for the memory of his brother. But during this great hunt he ends up making some friends, battling synthetic beings and getting even with his hateful father. This is a very exciting sci-fi, action, horror Film that makes a Predator the main star of the film who along this dangerous hunt ends up learning that the ways of his race might not be fully right and that being in a clan might not have to be with those who don’t accept you but with your true friends & family who like you for who you are. Who would have thought a Predator film would have a message! The creature effects in the film are really good as is the pacing and musical score. It is well casted with such names as Elle Fanning, Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, Mike Homik and Cameron Brown being some of the main cast. The film did well for 20th Century Studios at the domestic box office bringing in $90,946,639 on a budget of $105 million. This is a Predator film that is a mix of action, humor and drama and is a fitting sequel to this long running franchise and is one I bought when released on home media.

Hal and Bill are two twin brothers whose father has disappeared and after finding a strange toy monkey in his closet of junk he collected as a pilot and when they twist the toy monkey’s key and he plays his drum people around them start to die, and Hal even tries chopping the toy up with a cleaver and the brothers drop it down a well after their mother and uncle die in freaky painful ways. Now as adults the brothers are estranged, and Hal is not being a good father to his teenage son Petey and worse The Monkey has returned and their town is being plagued by crazy over the top deaths as the brothers are truly at odds with one another as one of the siblings wants the other dead, but can they survive The Monkey and its death curse and if they do, what will be left of their mental wellness. This is based on a short story by Stephen King and is a bloody horror comedy that is filled with lots of splatter and laughs as many of the deaths are gooey and so over done they will make you laugh as people explode and heads look like dropped pizza, and what is great is most of the gore effects look great. The film is well cast with such names as Theo James, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, Tatana Maslany, Christian Convery, Elijah Wood and Osgood Perkins who also wrote & directed. The film did well for NEON at the domestic box office bring in $39,724,909.00 on a budget of $11 million. If you like the work of Stephen King or like horror comedies with splatter, make sure to give this one a watch as its one I got on home media when released.

In 1968 Iris Campbell saved the lives of over a hundred people when she had a premonition of a tower restaurant blowing up and collapsing and for decades she has kept herself safe and locked away in a cabin in the woods. She has gotten really good at spotting Death’s tricks to get her and because of all this, she has driven her own children away who think she is mentally ill. But in 2025 he granddaughter Stefani is having terrible nightmares about the accident in 1968 and learns that Death is after all of those relatives of Iris that came after the accident as they should not be as Death does not like to be tricked and will take what is owed and when her grandma dies a strange death before her very eyes to prove this theory, and soon Stefani watches as her family start dying off one by one while she tries to find a way to stop this madness and save her bloodline. This is the 6th film in the Final Destination series and proves that this extreme kills and body count fright flick series has lots of gas left in the tank as this one was lots of fun as it has its fair share of smashing and mutilating bodies for the viewers enjoyment. And like most of the films in this series, it really is a “event” film as groups of family and friends gather at the cinema to see how the creators will kill off the characters in bloody ways. The film has a great cast with such names as Tony Todd, Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Teo Briones, Rya Kihlstedt, Brec Bassinger, Richard Harmon and Anna Lore making up just some of the main cast. The film did amazing for New Line Cinema at the domestic box office bringing in $138,130,814.00 on a budget of $50 million, and I am sure they are glad they went to the theaters with it as the original plan was for it to be only on HBO Max, their terrible streaming service that loses money. With the future of A Nightmare On Elm Street up in the air and The Conjuring universe slowing down, it’s clear that Final Destination is going to be a franchise that helps New Line Cinema claim the crown for horror films from other major production companies, and yes I bought it when released.

One night 17 children go missing all at once as they walked out of their house and ran into the darkness. These kids were all from the class of Justine Gandy, who is being blamed by many of the town for this as only Alex remains, who as well has been questioned by the police. Soon things start getting more and more weird around town as Justine is being harassed, her cheating lover is a cop who has a short temper, Archer one of the fathers of the missing kids is trying to solve the case and young Alex seems to be hiding a secret as his parents are not around and his strange aunt is around and is being seen around town as the people who do see her start acting strange and like they are in a trance and will become violent towards select people and will not stop until they are dead. Where are the kids that went missing? What the Hell is wrong with Aunt Gladys? Will Justine and Archer find them? Will they end up dead or missing themselves? Watch this strange and highly entertaining fright flick for your self to get those answers! This Zach Cregger film is his follow up to Barbarian and is another fun and twisted tale that unfolds for the viewers. The film has some bloody deaths that will gross out some viewers and the film has an amazing cast that includes Julie Garner, Josh Brolin, Cary Christopher, Amy Madigan, Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams and Alden Ehrenreich. The film did well for New Line Cinema at the domestic box office bringing in $151,550,044.00 on a budget of $38 million once more proven horror is a great money maker. This is one I bought when released on home media.

Finney and his sister Gwen are still dealing with the emotional fallout of him surviving and killing the serial killer The Grabber as he is still being plagued by phone calls or deceased kids looking for help and Gwen is being tormented by nightmares that are plagued with The Grabber as well as their mother who died by suicide. And all this leads them to a camp where their mom use to be a counselor and where three young boys were killed and their bodies never found some of the first victims of The Grabber who is the one that lead them there as he has returned from the grave in their nightmares and wants revenge for his death. This was such a spooky and great sequel to Black Phone as it turns The Grabber into this generation’s Freddy Kruger as if New Line Cinema is not going to deliver a new A Nightmare On Elm Street, the folks at Blumhouse and Universal gave us a good alternative. I really liked the setting of the camp that is surrounded by snow and ice as it helped add to the creepy feeling. Returning to the cast is Madeleine McGraw, Mason Thames, Jeremy Davies, Miguel Mora and Ethan Hawke with such names as Demian Bichir, Arianna Rivas and Anna Lore joining the cast. The film did well at the domestic box office for Universal bringing in $77,378,880.00 on a budget of $30 million, showing horror is a genre that almost always turns a good profit. If you like the first film, enjoy supernatural terrors or like nightmare slashers, give this one a watch. This is one that I got when released on home media.

In 1932 the Smokestack Twins (Smoke and Stack) have returned to Mississippi from Chicago with the idea to open up a juke joint inside an old sawmill they have bought with cash. They want their cousin Sammie to play the blues at the grand opening and go around town to get their friends to help get it ready including the brothers estranged ladies Annie and Mary as they all want this place to work and give them a place that makes money as well as give the Black community a safe place to let loose. But things soon turn really bad when the music draws in Remmick, who is a vampire musician and sort of a cult leader arrives with a band of vampires and slowly starts turn the guests and the friends of the Twins into bloodsuckers with the goal to get his claws on Sammie and his musical talent. This is a really cool vampire flick that reminded me a little of From Dusk Till Dawn if it was set in the 1930’s and the plot was based around music as well as had the interesting characters like in The Lost Boys as the Smokestack Twins and their cousin Sammie are all likable in their own ways, even if the Twins have done bad things. The film is a slow burn before it gets into the vampires attacking, the character work as well as the soundtrack and score just work so well that you find yourself being drawn into the story. The film has an amazing cast that includes Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, Jack O’ Connell, Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo just making up some of the leads and all who are fantastic. The film did well for Warner Brothers at the domestic box office bringing in $278,578,513.00 on a budget of around $100 million, once more proving that horror is a hit at the box office. So if you like horror films that feature vampires, blues music, set in the 30’s and or just enjoy a good fright film make sure to check this one out. I bought this one once it was released on home media.

Andy and his vision impaired stepsister Piper lose their father in an accident that had him slipping in the shower, and now placed in foster care they are being watched after by Laura, a single mother who lost her blind daughter by drowning. She is also watching after a mute young boy named Oliver. While things at first are odd but okay, Andy starts to see that Laura is not what she seems and neither is Oliver as they are doing some odd things that includes Oliver being a little weird with animals and being locked in his room, while Laura seems to be obsessed with Piper who reminds her of her deceased daughter. Things start to unravel when Laura has really lured Piper to live with her, as she needs to kill her in order to have the spirit of her daughter to take over her body by a weird ritual as a murderous and flesh-eating spirit is inside Oliver needs to consume the flesh in order to bring back life. Can Andy save his sister or will Laura be able to have her lost child return? Watch this awesome indie fight flick for yourself and find out. This film from the brothers who brought you Talk To Me shows that they understand and could be the next faces in horror that will take the genre into a new direction filled with blood, developed characters and brooding atmosphere. The scenes of the demonic Oliver mutilating himself as he eats things like knives and wooden table tops is pure nightmare fuel. The film is well cast with such talent as Sally Hawking, Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips and Sally-Anne Upton making up the main cast. The film did well for A24 at the domestic box office bringing in $19,323,752.00 on a budget of only $20 million showing that indie horror is always a hit. Bought when released on home media, as I needed it for my collection.

What can I say, I just love going to one of the many local theaters and seeing a horror film on the big screen as it is a genre that has been with me pretty much my whole life through both good and bad times and has brought me so much joy as well as helped push my imagination to the limits. Well as you can see the projector has been shut off and the lights have been turned on here at the Rotten Ink Theater, but do not worry I am pretty sure that the workers here that are the ticket taker, the concession worker, the usher and the projectionist will not mind if I take a few moments to let you all know that our next update will be all about the 1977 version of Island Of Dr. Moreau and the Marvel Comics adaptation of the film…but also it will be the start of a multiple year event that will be going on here at Rotten Ink as every update will be a “From Horror Movie To Horror Comic” update! It has been something that I have been thinking about doing for awhile now and after talking to some of my family and close friends who thought it was a great idea, I think 2026 is the year to start it. So until next time, read a comic or three, watch a film or two and as always support you local theaters, horror hosts and wrestlers. See you soon as we learn the law of Dr. Moreau as told to use by Marvel Comics and the animal people force to live by these laws.

Matt Goes To The Movies 2024

It’s 2025! I hope that you had a great holiday season and were able to spend it with family, Friends, pets and plants as I know that is what I did. But 2024 was also a very interesting year for cinema in the theaters as Hollywood had a rough time with the actors’ and writers’ strikes in 2023 and this caused many films to be delayed and shifted around as well as allowed some more indie films to get their time to shine. But sadly for me, at the start of the year I had some medical issues that kept me out of the theater, so I saw way fewer movies than I normally do including missing some bigger released films like Dune Part 2, Madame Web, The First Omen, Gladiator 2, Kraven The Hunter, Joker 2, to name a few. But I still tried to go and see as many horror films that I could as I am always loyal to my favorite genre! This update might not be as epic as years past, but I do think that you all will have a blast sitting here at the Rotten Ink Theater with me as we talk about the movies I saw in the theater in 2024.

movie-snacks-2024

I only got to see a small amount of films in 2024, and the ones I did get to see were mostly horror as that is my favorite genre but I did get to see the following films Deadpool And Wolverine, Twisters and I.S.S. So yeah, not a lot to work with here, but I did still try and see every horror film I could…while I missed some due to health issues, I was able to checkout a good amount this year on the big screen so let’s just get to my countdown of the best horror films I saw in the theater in 2024!

Sam and Colby The Legends of the Paranormal Poster

Social media stars Sam and Colby along with friend Nate are heading to Nevada in order to investigate the legendary Skin Walker Ranch to look into all the paranormal goings on in the area from UFO sightings, skin walker spottings and even the ghost of a Native American shaman who is said to protect the land. The three friends stop at Boot Hill to visit the graves of the people killed in the old west town before starting their creepy investigation that takes them all over the ranch, hearing all kinds of noises, having some communications with the other side, getting spooked and finally learning what it is all about. This film is clearly made for a younger audience and is a weird mix of documentary and horror film as parts are clearly set up all the while they are also trying to tell you about the legends of the area. The film really does feel like one long YouTube video with very little scares being shown and lots of stock footage used over and over again to get the story moving. While this was not for me, I am very happy to see that the pairs’ fans really enjoyed the film and wish the pair of young filmmakers the best of luck on all their future projects. The film did well for the pair at the domestic box office bringing in $1,755,000 on an unknown budget, and I am sure this will lead to more of their paranormal investigating films to make it on the big screen.

in a violent nature Poster

In the White Pines woods an undead killer Johnny, who committed a massacre there many years ago, returns after his mother’s locket necklace is stolen from his grave by a group of friends who are staying at a nearby cabin. Johnny is on a mission to get the locket back and as well kill as many people as he comes across on this quest. In the end Kris is the only one left alive, and she tries to return his locket, but is this enough to save her life? Watch this indie slasher film to find out for yourself. This is a film that is not for everyone as it is really slow moving and very boring in spots as much of the film is just Johnny walking slowly around the woods…and I mean A LOT of this film is this. The ending is also pointless and has long dialogue moments that go nowhere and have zero payout, and for me the sin this film commits is that it really is very boring in long sections of the runtime. As for the stuff that works for it, some of the kills are gruesome and well done. I also didn’t mind the killer Johnny as he is kind of cool looking and has a classic slasher kind of backstory. Some of the shots are good when not static and boring and the sound is well done and is like a character of its own. The film did well for IFC Films on a limited release bring in $4,229,999.00 at the domestic box office on an unknown budget. This was a film that I could not get into, but I can see why some horror fans enjoy it.

exorcism (2024) Poster

Actor Tony Miller has just come off a battle with drugs & alcohol and has been cast in a horror film called “The Georgetown Project” where he plays a priest who tries to save the life of a possessed young woman, but after the start of filming Tony seems to be losing his mind as something has taken over causing him to act strangely at home as well as on set. His daughter Lee, along with her girlfriend and star of the film Blake and man of God Father Conor, try to save her father’s very soul as a demon clearly has a hold of him and a showdown takes place on the closed down film set that pits daughter and father against one another, but is his daughters love and the power of Christ enough to set his tortured soul free or will evil come out on top? Watch this possession film to find out for yourself. This is a pretty fun demonic possession film that for the most part just blends in with all the other films that have this same plot, but what does set this one apart for most of the others is the casting as Russell Crowe, David Hyde Pierce, Chloe Bailey, Ryan Simpkins and Sam Wothington are all great in their roles and give solid performances with what they are given to work with. The film scares are delivered by the overuse of jump scares as well as just the subject matter of demons and lost faith. One other note I should say is the Kevin Williamson is one of the film’s producers. The film did ok for Vertical Entertainment at the domestic box office bringing in $4,530,418.00 on an unknown budget. While it’s not a ground breaking film, I did have a good time seeing this in the theater.

Afraid (2024) Poster

Curtis works for a marketing company and has a loving wife Meredith and three kids Iris, Preston and Cal. As apart of his job he has a smart AI device called AIA put in, and their lives change as it does things to make their lives better. Slowly Curtis starts to question the company behind AIA and also the device itself as something just seems off about them both, and when a strange person from a motorhome appears and does strange hand gestures it’s the final straw and Curtis tries to get AIA out of his home and away from his family, but this AI does not want to leave without a fight. This is a fun sci-fi horror film that brings some jump scares as well as brings to light the unknown dangers of AI. The film is well acted and stars such names as John Cho, Katherine Waterston, Havana Rose Liu, David Dastmalchian, Ashley Romans, Lukita Maxwell and Keith Carradine. The film did okat for Sony at the domestic box office bringing in $6,725,687.00 on a budget of only $12 million. While the trailers made it look like a ghost movie, it really is not, and while it got very mixed reviews from critics and fans, it was a fun film to see on the big screen and is one that I will watch again on home media.

Werewolves (2024) Poster

One year ago a super moon turned millions of people into werewolves when they looked up at it, and now a group of scientists are trying to figure out how to block the effects of the moon this year as well as protect those who were effected last year and have a craving to become the beast again by using a spray. Wesley Marshall, a former military man, is part of this scientific group and is also watching after his sister in law Lucy and niece Emma after his brother passed away during the first werewolf outbreak. After the experiment goes wrong at the lab and chaos is breaking loose, Wesley does what he must to get to what is left of his family to protect them against the horrors of the werewolves that are roaming around outside as their ranks get growing and people keep dying. This is a horror action film that feels like a slightly bigger budget direct to Sy-Fy movie that has some truly unintentional goofy moments and characters that made really dumb decisions. The film does have practical effects werewolves so that is a plus. The film stars Frank Grillo, Katrina Law, IIfenesh Hadera, Lou Diamond Phillips and James Michael Cummings as the leads and all do their best in what they are given. The film has lots of shaky camera moments and over uses blinking lights so be warned. The film did ok for Briarcliff Entertainment at the domestic box office bring in $1,903,905 on an unknown budget. If you like werewolf films filled with action and goofy moments, check this one out.

Ghostbusters Afterlife Poster

The Ghostbusters are back in New York, but while busting they are also causing damage to public property and this makes them a target of Mayor Walter Peck who has for decades had issues with the team, and worse he forces them to take Phoebe Spengler off the team due to her being only fifteen. So while her mother, brother and former science teacher are busting ghosts, she is forced to hang around the firehouse…but things change when she meets a ghost named Malory in the park as well as when original Ghostbusters Ray Stantz & Winston Zeddemore research and unleash Garakka a evil spirit who can control other ghosts as well as cause the world the freeze! Now the current Ghostbusters with the remaining classic Ghostbusters must team up along with a goofball that is the Fire Master (their only hope to defeat Garakka) in order to save New York once again as well as prove to the Mayor that Phoebe is an important part of the team. This fifth film in the Ghostbuster movie plays hard on people’s nostalgic love for the series as we have returning characters like Slimer and Walter Peck, plus gadgets and vehicles, and while it was a fun popcorn movie, it is kind of a mess as it has too many characters who offer nothing to the story, plot holes, character changes that are puzzling and a main villain that they seem to forget the powers they gave him. The film has original cast members like Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, William Atherton and Annie Potts returning and new regular cast like McKenna Grace, Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Logan Kim and Celeste O’Conner as well coming back. Plus Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster and Emily Alyn Lind appear. The film is light on busting ghosts, brings a few laughs, has some cool effects and should be seen if you are a fan of the series. The film did well for Columbia Pictures bringing in $113,306.664.00 on a budget of $100 million showing that this series still has some life in it. While it is one of the weaker Ghostbuster films, it is one that I picked up for my home media collection.

Stream (2024) Poster

The Keenan Family has headed to Pine Hills Hotel for a bonding experience but unbeknownst to them and the small amount of other guests, it’s been taken over by Mr. Lockwood and four masked killers who are playing a game for the rich people that are watching them via a live stream and placing bets on who will survive, what killer will have the most kills points and so on. But while the guests are dropping like flies, these killers underestimate the Keenan family, as they are not going down without a fight in this lockdown hotel from Hell. This gruesome film is brought to you by the same people who have made the Terrifier series so that means lots of over the top gory kills and psycho killers who love what they are doing to other people. The film is packed with some awesome actors who are both in main roles as well as in cameos and this includes such names as Jeffrey Combs, Danielle Harris, Tony Todd, Tim Curry, Bill Moseley, Terry Alexander, Felissa Rose, Mark Holton, Dee Wallace, Tim Reid, Daniel Roebuck and David Howard Thornton with Charles Edwin Powell, Sydney Malakeh, Wesley Holloway and others being main cast. The film while reminding me of a mix of “Slashers (2001)” and “The Game (1984)” has a good plot but is over long in its runtime making some of it drag a little. The film had a limited release and did well for Iconic Events Releasing at the domestic box office bringing in an unknown profit on a unknown budget. While it had flaws, it is always great to see Danielle Harris on the big screen as well as Tim Curry and to support indie horror.

Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey 2 Poster

Christopher Robin survived the Hundred Acre Woods massacre and in many peoples eyes, he is the one who killed all those people, but he knows that it was Pooh Bear and Piglet that killed them all, and worse they are still out in the woods and are now joined by Owl and Tigger with their killing ways. Now Christopher is on a mission to prove the town wrong and get to the history of Pooh that just might tie into the disappearance of his brother when they were kids. And when Pooh and his friends start a rampage around town that kills a bunch of ravers, Christopher’s parents and even his young sister goes missing by their hands and this causes Pooh and Christopher to have a showdown that will leave only one alive…and I am not telling you who survives and what is left of them. This slasher film is a bloodbath when Pooh and his friends go on their killing sprees as they rip off heads and shred flesh with their claws, but some moments that focus on Christopher Robin do tend to drag…oh and they also act like the first film was just that a film based off the massacre. They also changed the look of Pooh and Piglet, and the new designs are well done as are the looks of Owl and Tigger. The films stars Scott Chambers, Tallulah Evans, Ryan Oliva, Marcus Massey, Lewis Santer and Simon Callow all who do good in their roles. The film did okay for Fathom Events for its limited theatrical run bringing in $533,144.00 on an unknown budget. If you liked the first film or just enjoy slasher films starring public domain characters made popular by Disney, then this one is for you.

Thorns (2023) Poster

Gabriel Goodman is an ex-priest who now works for NASA and is sent to an observatory that they lost contact with after it was reported that they made contact with something weird coming from an old satellite. As he travels to this remote area he gets a call from Archbishop Jenkins who tells him that this also might be a matter for the church as well due to Sister Agnes being seen around the area speaking of nightmares and Hell coming to Earth. When Gabriel arrives he finds that everyone inside is dead, and that the head doctor has been taken over by a demonic being called The Necronaut and is trying to send a demonic message across the world to usher in Hell on Earth. Gabriel along with Agnes must do what they can to avoid being corrupted and stop this end of days before it can happen…but can they do so or is mankind doomed? This is a fun and weird end of days fright flick that takes elements from many other films like Hellraiser, Event Horizon and Hellmaster (as it makes sense on this one as they are both directed by the same guy). The film has some great practical effects and some okay digital ones and has a pretty gross eyeball-cutting scene. It also builds a interesting story, world and monsters but suffers from a goof of a hero who makes dumb choices and does not sell any of the terrors he is seeing. The film stars Jon Bennett, Cassandra Schomer, Bo Shumaker and Doug Bradley in lead roles. The film had a very limited release in theaters and brought in unknown profits at the domestic box office. While not a groundbreaking film, it really was a fun watch on the big screen and is one that I would watch again.

Tarot (2024) Poster

Haley along with six of her friends have rented out a mansion to celebrate a friend’s birthday when they find a very old deck of tarot cards and she gives everyone a reading including herself. When the party is over and they all head home, they start dying one by one from mysterious deaths and after a few, they all realize they are dying by their read horoscope and each victim is meeting their fate at the hands of the final cards each drew like The High Priestess, The Hermit, The Fool, The Devil, The Magician, Death and The Hangman as the tarot cards were cursed may centuries ago by The Astrologer and whoever does a reading with those cards has doomed the person who had their signs read. Now Haley and her remaining friends must race against the clock to break the curse and stay alive. This is a paint by numbers PG-13 horror film that is still pretty entertaining and has some cool monsters causing deaths to those foolish enough to have their fortunes read with their cursed deck of cards, and I think they could have a franchise on their hands if the film would have done a little better. The film is a mixed bag when it comes to acting as some of them are really bad and the character Paxton played by Jacob Batalon is very eye rolling. Other actors in this film include Harriet Slater, Adian Bradley, Avantika, Humberly Gonzalez and Larsen Thompson to name a few. The film did okay for Screen Gems at the domestic box office bringing in $18,771,004.00 on a budget of $8 million. Not a bad film but also not a great one but is one I will watch again and possibly buy on home media.

Night Swim (2023) Poster

Ray Waller is 3rd baseman for the Milwaukee Brewers who was once a powerful hitter and is now dealing with having M.S. and he moves his family into a home that has a massive natural spring swimming pool that ends up doing wonders in his therapy and he starts to slowly feel better the more he is in the pool water. But the pool also has a very dark side as many of people have drowned in it and his wife, daughter and son have seen and heard things while in this pool. And when Ray is taken over by the spring pool water, a sacrifice must be made and his family must fight to stay together as well as try and save not only each others lives but that of their ill father…can they do it or will the pool claim another life. This was the start of horror films in the theater for 2024 and for the most part was a great way to kick it off, as it was a fun little chiller film set around a cursed swimming pool and yes, it’s a film about a cursed pool that houses spirits. The film relies on jump scares to bring the chills and the look of the spirits is interesting and creepy. The film is well acted and stars Wyatt Russell, Kerry Condon, Amelie Hoeferle and Gavin Warren who make up the family. The film did well for Universal at the domestic box office bringing in $32,494,740.00 on a budget of $15 million. Worth a watch if you find water, pools and evil spirits scary and is one I got on DVD when released.

Founder's Day (2023) Poster

Allison Chambers witnesses her girlfriend Melissa being killed by a masked killer all right before the town’s election for Mayor and worse people all around town are now being killed by this crazed killer and at this point everyone is a suspect as many of these people are connected to Allison in some way, but when suspects are found are they the true killer or is something more sinister at play. This is a pretty fun slasher film that does suffer a little from an over long runtime and some predictable moments but when the killing starts up, it really is a scream. The masked killer is cool looking as the mask is cool and the weapon of a gavel with a knife that pops out of the bottom is an interesting weapon. The film stars Noami Grace, Olivia Nikkanen, Emilia McCarthy, Andrew Stewart-Jones, Kate Edmonds and William Russ to name a few. The film did okay at the domestic box office on a limited run bringing in unknown profits on an unknown budget. While this was not a great slasher film, it was an ok one to see in the theater on a cold winter night. Also I have to say that Grace, McCarthy and Nikkanen should be hired to be in more Horror Films.

front room (2024) poster

Belinda and her husband Norman are struggling to pay bills and they have a child on the way, but their lives are about to change when his father dies and his overly religious stepmother Solange comes to live with them and with her comes money as well as lots of issues that include her being racist, having bathroom accidents, claiming the Holy Spirit is in her, trying to name and raise their child when born and as well trying to turn Norman against his wife Belinda by claiming she is abusing her and their daughter. But what will happen when it all comes ahead when Belinda and Solange clash for the home, the baby and the attention of Norman. This is a very strange and fun religious horror film that sets an overbearing stepmother against a new mother who is well educated and has faced being treated poorly due to her race and one will have to go…but which one will be left standing. The film stars Brandy, Kathryn Hunter, Andrew Burnap and Neal Huff who are all great in their roles, and I have to say we need more horror films starring Brandy! The film did ok for A24 at the domestic box office bringing in $3,092,269.00 on an unknown budget. The film faced very harsh reviews but it’s a very weird and fun film that has gross moments and a very sinister old crazy lady as a main villain and is worth checking out if you like the indie films of A24.

Y2K (2024) Poster

On New Years Eve 1999 high school best friends Eli and Danny are heading to a party with the idea of finally kissing one of their female classmates as Eli has been crushing on popular girl and hacker Laura and finally wants to make his move, but as the clock strikes midnight the Y2K virus takes effect via the internet and has turned the machines against mankind by not only killing them but also forcing them to get a chip into their mind that will cause them to be their slaves. But Eli is not going to stand by and watch this happen and people he cares about have either been killed or chipped so along with Laura, Ash, CJ and Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit) come together to stop the machine uprising and shutdown Y2K once and for all. This is a pretty fun horror comedy that is a love letter to the late 90’s in all things pop culture. The Y2K Robot machines are pretty cool as they are made up of things like computers, VCRs and pagers, and I have to say that I think that some of the jokes work, while others do not. The film is well casted with such names as Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, Lachlan Watson, Julian Dennison and Daniel Zolghadri make up the main cast and all are fantastic with Watson and Zegler stealing the show for me. The film did pretty well for A24 at the domestic box office bringing in $4,210,306 on a $15 million budget. If you like the 90’s and horror comedies, make sure to check this one out.

Imaginary (2024) Poster

Jessica moves back into her family’s home after her father is put into a home, along with her is new husband Max and his two kids Taylor and Alice. Things are going pretty well at first as Jessica remembers nothing of her childhood just that she was raised by her grandparents at a very young age and now she is doing her best to be a mother to her stepdaughters, all the while working as a children’s book artist and writer. But things start to get really weird when Max goes on tour with his band and young Alice makes an imaginary friend by the name of Chauncey who appears as a stuffed bear and who ends up being very mean making her do things she doesn’t want to do like hurt herself as well as speaks very meanly to her in-between telling her he is her best friend. You see Chauncey was Jessica’s old imaginary friend, and he is mad that she left him behind. In the end Chauncey kidnaps Alice and takes her to his realm of make believe to lure Jessica in as claiming his one time best friend is his goal and he will do whatever it takes to do so from killing to tricking. This is a fun kid friendly PG-13 horror film from Blumhouse and Lionsgate that brings a spooky teddy bear to the big screen that is more than meets the eye as he can grow into a monstrous bear or even show his true form that is like a spider with white TV like eyes. The film also uses lots of particle effects and that’s always a plus. The film is well casted with such names as DeWanda Wise, Pyper Braun, Taegen Burns, Dane DiLiegro, Betty Buckley and Tom Payne all making up the main cast and doing great in their roles. This is like a kids version of Insidious as there is even a Blue Door like the Red Door and a spooky realm that you must enter. The film did well for Lionsgate at the domestic box office bringing in $28,009,161.00 on a budget of around $12 million, showing the smaller budget Horror Films can bring in the people to theaters. This was another case of a film getting hate on the web from the old guard horror “fans” but make up your own mind and give it a watch.

never let go (2024) Poster

Nolan and Samuel are twin brothers who live with their Momma in an old home in the middle of the woods as she told them that world has ended and that there is evil all around and that they must only leave home with a rope around them that is attached to their home as if they let go the evil will get inside and this will cause them all to die. But when young Nolan starts to questioning his mother’s sanity and if the evil is really out there, things start falling apart and this leads to a series of tragic events that will change this isolated family’s lives forever…but is the evil real or is it all just in her head…watch this creepy film to find out for yourself. Never Let Go is one of those films that mostly takes place in one setting, the family home that is surrounded by woods and this setting is what helps bring the uneasy feeling while viewing. The film stars Halle Berry, Percy Daggs, Anthony B. Jenkins and Stephanie Lavigne all who do great in their roles with Berry as Momma stealing the show. The one thing that did make me a little annoyed with some of the characters is the decisions they made, as at times they caused the chaos they faced. The evil also delivers some great spooky moments as over all it’s a pretty fun fright flick. The film did very poorly for Lionsgate Films bringing in only $10,306,106.00 on a budget of $20 million. While it did perform badly, make sure to check it out as it’s not a bad film at all and is worth a watch.

I Saw the TV Glow Poster

Outsiders Owen and Maddy meet in school and bond over the spooky teen TV show called “The Pink Opaque” about two girls that fight supernatural monsters together even though they are far apart. And while they enjoy the show together as well as separately, things are very rough in their everyday lives as they battle their own sexuality, their parents, their fears & sadness and when Maddy goes missing and his mother passes away, Owen is all alone and starts working jobs as well as trying to be a man, but his life is once more turned around when Maddy shows back up after missing for over a decade and tells him that the show they watched and their lives are not what they seem. But what is real and what is not real will come into play for Owen and make him second guess everything and everyone that has ever been in his life. This is your typical A24 horror film that has lots of art house mixed in and makes you have to think about the story you are seeing before your eyes on the big screen. The film deals with lots of depressing topics and feelings that teens face, as well as makes you face that things you remember might not be what you they are. There are creatures in the film as they are part of the TV Show but the horror really comes from the unknown. The film is well casted with Justice Smith & Brigette Lundy-Paine playing Owen & Maddy, and they are fantastic! Other cast members include Helena Howard, Lindsey Jordan, Emma Portner, Fred Durst, Danielle Deadwyler, Michael C. Maronna & Danny Tamberlli to name a few. The film had a limited release in theaters and did pretty well for A24 at the domestic box office bringing in $5,017,817.00 on a $10 million budget. This film will not be for everyone, but I enjoyed it and will watch it again to see what I missed.

strangers ch. 1 (2024) Poster

Ryan and Maya are driving through Oregon to get to Portland as she has a big job interview, but after stopping at a diner for lunch in the very small town of Venus, their car won’t start and has to be towed to the local garage and they have to stay the night in a Airbnb out in the middle of the woods. What starts out as romantic turns into a nightmare when three strangers wearing masks (Man In The Mask, Dollface & Pin-Up Girl) all show up to torment them and uses knives, truck and axe to do so. They chase the couple all around the home and through the woods to in the end stabbing them both and leaving them for dead…but Maya survives. This is a relaunch of the film series and is a strange way to kick off a new trilogy as in many aspects it just feels like a remake of the first film from 2008 with just some more modern changes. The Strangers are as creepy and sadistic as ever as they clearly enjoy playing their cat and mouse games with their victims and being a slasher, the film was far less bloody than I was expecting. The film is well cast with Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez, Rachel Shenton, Richard Brake making up some of the main cast, and The Strangers this time were played by Matus Lajcak, Olivia Kreutzova and Letizia Fabbri. I do need to say that Madelaine Petsch needs to be cast in more Horror Films! The film did well for Lionsgate at the American box office bringing in $35,202,562.00 on a budget of only $12 million. While this was by far not the best film in The Strangers film series, it still had some good spooky moments and was worth the watch in the theater.

Trap (2024) Poster

Cooper seems like a great dad as he is a firefighter who is taking his daughter Riley to a Lady Raven pop concert for getting good grades and best of all he has gotten her great seats, but things get a little stressful for Cooper when he notices that the venue is swarming with police officers and surveillance cameras. He learns from a staff working selling tour merchandise that the cops are there to bust a serial killer called The Butcher…and unknown to them all, Cooper is The Butcher and now must find a way to exit the building while not tipping his daughter off that something is wrong, but as this killer meet his match in a pop singer and an elderly criminal profiler? Make sure to watch this entertaining horror thriller from M. Night Shyamalan and find out if this killer can get away with his horrific crimes or if his slashing ways comes to an end. This is a very creepy film as you watch the killer Cooper who cares about his daughter but also will do whatever he can to not be caught and that means other people’s wellbeing are no concern of his. The film is well acted with Josh Hartnett playing Cooper and other names in the cast including Saleka Shyamalan, Ariel Donoghue, Hayley Mills, Alison Pill and Jonathan Langdon. The film did ok for Warner Brothers at the domestic box office bringing in $42,777,281.00 on a budget of $20 million showing once more that horror almost always turns a profit at the theaters. This is one that I got when released on home media.

Late Night with the Devil Poster

Jack Delroy is a late night talk show host for a program called Night Owls and his ratings over time are dropping and this causes him to panic and want to go all out for his 1977 Halloween Special and have a massive ratings hit. So he invites a psychic, a skeptic, a parapsychologist and a young girl named Lilly, who was the only survivor of a mass suicide committed by a demon worshiping cult and who is said to be possessed by a demon. And things turn really sinister and wrong for Jack, his guests, crew and audience when that demon decides to come out and play and bring some of Jack’s dark secrets to the light as well as cause death, panic and fear…this is one live broadcast that the network never wanted people to see again. This film plays like a mix of a documentary as well as a re-airing of that tragic show and for the most part it really does a good job of pulling it off. The film has some creepy moments with Lilly being the main source of those moments as well as brings some laughs and Jack and his show are just cheesy late night fun. The films stars David Dastmalchian, Laura Gordon, Ingrid Torelli, Rhys Auteri, Ian Bliss, Fayssal Bazzi, Josh Quong Tart and Michael Ironside to name a few of the leads. The film did well for IFC Films at the domestic box office bringing in $10,001,000.00 on an unknown budget. This creepy little film is not for everyone, but if you enjoy films like The Last Broadcast or WNUF Halloween Special you will dig this one. It’s one I bought when released on home media. Also the film had some protest over using some AI images, silly as they are not that in your face.

Watchers (2024) Poster

Mina is a young woman who cannot get over the death of her mother in a a car accident and while working for a pet shop, she is asked to deliver a bird to a zoo. Along her journey her car breaks down and she finds herself running from unknown creatures in the woods and having to find shelter in a building that has been dubbed the coop by the three other people that found themselves suck in the woods that are Madeline, Ciara and Daniel. Every night they stay inside this building that has a massive thick glass window and are watched by the creatures. But as time goes on Mina and the others want to make an escape and they learn what these creatures are as well as who and why the strange glass bunker was made. But when some of them make it out alive, they are not fully out of the woods as something has followed them out and doesn’t want their race’s story and secrets out. This is a very cool creature feature film done with a twist and is done by Ishana Night Shyamalan, the daughter of M. Night Shyamalan and is her first movie as director and writer, and she does a great job. And what the creatures are is pretty interesting, and not the classic folklore beings you would expect. The film is well casted and acted as such names as Dakota Fanning, Olwen Fouere, Georgina Campbell, Oliver Finnegan and John Lynch all shine. The film sadly did not do all that well for Warner Brothers at the domestic box office as it brought in $19,071,404.00 on a $30 million budget. While the film did not do that well, I for one loved it and got it once released on home media.

bloody axe wound Poster

The town of Clover Falls is the stalking ground for a masked supernatural serial killer named Roger Bladecut who has been killing people for decades and even has videotaped his crimes to turn them into movies that the townspeople rent from the video store he owns. He has a daughter named Abbie who has to take over the killing business when he starts to have some health issues from decades of past wounds, but when she falls in love with Sam Crane and becomes pals with all her friends that have all been selected to be slaughtered for the next film she must figure out a way to save them, all the while dodging her father who is now on a rampage as he wants them dead and his daughter to come back to the family business of killing. What can Abbie do to save Sam, the woman of her dreams as well as not betray her father who is counting on her for the slaughter. This is a very fun slasher film that showcases what a young woman has to put up with when her father is a true urban legend psycho killer and all she wants to do is please him but also have happiness in her own personal life. The film has some bloody kills and is well casted and acted with such actors as Sari Arambulo, Molly Brown, Billy Burke, Eddie Leavy, Margot Anderson-Song, Angel Theory and Jeffrey Dean Morgan making up the main cast. The film was released very late in 2024 and had a very short limited release for RLJE Films and it looks like it will be making them a good amount of extra cash. Worth watching for sure and is one I will buy on Blu-Ray when released.

beetlejuice beetlejuice Poster

Lydia Deetz has grown up: her husband died in the Amazon, her daughter Astrid barely speaks to her, she sees ghosts and now has a TV Show about it, her manager is trying to become her new husband and worse of all she gets word from her step mother Delia that her father Charles has passed away, eaten by a shark after surviving a plane crash. Lydia, Astrid and Delia head back to the old house in Winter River for the burial services and wake for Charles where Astrid meets a boy who ends up not being what he seems and Lydia must call on Beetlejuice to help save her daughter from the other side, but Beetlejuice needs help to survive his soul sucking ex-wife who is back and looking for revenge…but can these two truly trust one another. This was such a fun sequel that was long overdue and brought Beetlejuice back to the big screen for old fans as well as new, as watching this gross jokester undead goof again made me feel like a kid. The film also wins big points with me for using lots of practical effects as well as bringing back Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara to their iconic roles but also brought in Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, Burn Gorman, Arthur Conti and Danny Devito into the mix. The film did really well for Warner Brothers at the domestic box office bringing in $111,003,345 on a budget of $100 million. A really fun film that should prove to Warner Brothers that sequels to some of their iconic films like Beetlejuice, Gremlins, The Goonies and The Lost Boys should be given proper sequels, a must see for fans of the original film.

Maxxxine Poster

Maxine Minx is living in Hollywood in 1985 and is trying to breakout of just being a porn actress and auditions and gets the lead role in the film “The Puritan II”, but her past is about to catch up to her as a killer wearing black gloves is killing those close to her, a private detective is harassing her on the paycheck of the killer, two homicide detectives are wanting to question her and the director of the film is pushing her to focus as this could be her big break into fame. But Maxine is not going to go down without a fight as she wants to be famous no matter the price and whoever gets in her way be damned. This third film in the X series is a mix of 80’s Slasher with some Giallo thrown in for good measure as the plot really is Maxine Minx being taunted, tormented and stalked by a faceless killer in black gloves all the while the serial killer the Night Stalker is prowling the streets and Hollywood is not missing a beat. Mia Goth once more shows why she is the new “It” actress in horror as she kills it playing Maxine again, and other actors like Elizabeth Debicki, Kevin Bacon, Michelle Monaghan, Moses Sumney, Bobby Cannavale and Lily Collins all kill it in their roles. The film did okay for A24 at the domestic box office bringing in $15,097,632.00 on an unknown budget. While not as good as X or Pearl, this film still is a very entertaining, great watch and has ushered in a new horror franchise for sure, also the Bates Motel and Home from Psycho appears in this flick.

Terrifier 3 Poster

Sienna Shaw and her brother Jonathan were the sole survivors of the Miles County Massacre on Halloween being done by Art The Clown and while he has tried to move on by going to college, she has spent years in an asylum and now that she is out and living with her aunt she is trying to get her life back in order but things will never be the same as Art The Clown is back as well and he has backup with Victoria Heyes. They are on another killing spree this time during Christmas and like before Sienna and her family and friends are on the chopping block as there is something more demonic at play this time around and Sienna will need all her chosen one powers to truly stop this killer clown from Hell. This third film in the super popular Terrifier series is filled with gore, over the top kills and a decent story this time around. Sienna Shaw is a fantastic character and is one of modern slasher films best final girls, and the actress that plays her, Lauren LaVera, is awesome and I hope to see her in more horror films! David Howard Thornton is truly Art The Clown and has taken a mute character and given it so much personality in his face and movements. Other cast members include Samantha Scaffidi, Elliot Fullam, Margaret Anne Florence, Kailey Hyman and Alexa Blair Robertson. The film also has lots of cool cameos from the likes of Jason Patric, Chris Jericho, Clint Howard, Tom Savini and Daniel Roebuck. The film did well for Cineverse at the domestic box office bringing in $53,981,071 on a budget of $2 million. If you liked the first two films in the series, make sure to give this one a watch as well as it’s a blood splattered good time.

Lisa Frankensrein (2023) Poster

Lisa Swallows is a teenager who witnesses her mother be killed by a masked killer and is now very much the odd kid as she barely speaks, has a strict stepmother, a goofy father and no boys pay attention to her. The only things she has in life is her music, crush on Michael the school’s paper editor, her caring cheerleader sister Taffy and the local abandoned cemetery that she relaxes in. But after a freak thunderstorm and an odd lightning strike in the cemetery, a member of the Frankenstein family (called The Creature) comes back to life to show his love for Lisa and the two end up becoming friends and lovers but there is a catch as Lisa and The Creature have to kill people in order to replace his rotting of missing body parts! With the police closing in as the bodies are found, Lisa must make a decision to face the crimes or end it all for true love. This is a very fun PG-13 horror comedy that takes place in the same universe as Jennifer’ Body and brings a new twist to the Frankenstein story. It was also very much inspired by the classic Universal Monster films as posters, masks and art from those films are featured throughout. The humor is silly and hit the mark for me and it is well casted with such names as Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, Liza Soberano, Carla Gugino, Joe Chrest and Henry Eikenberry making up the leads and really Newton is fantastic as Lisa. Sadly the film did not do well for Focus Features at the domestic box office bringing in $9,774,285.00 on a budget of $13 million. It’s a shame that moviegoers did not support this film in the theater as it’s really good and one that I ended up buying when released on home media. Also the film has a great soundtrack!

Shaitaan (2024) Poster

Kabir and his wife Jyoti are heading to their farmhouse along with their teenage daughter Janvhi and young son Dhruv for a relaxing time, but while getting there they meet Vanraj at a restaurant who ends up buying the parents tea and gives their daughter a laddu that ends up allowing him to take control of her actions, and this is unknown to them all until that night during a massive thunderstorm Vanraj appears at the home and takes control of Janvhi making her hurt not only herself but also her family for his amusement as he wants her parents to willingly give her to him as he has evil plans for the young teen. And after many attacks, being stabbed and finally Dhruv being seriously injured Janvhi is given to this mad man with black magic powers…but Kabir has others plans as he wants to get his daughter back and free from his control as well as end his evil ways once and for all, but can this father’s love truly stop evil or will his daughter be lost forever, checkout this great film and find out for yourself. In 2024 Bollywood Horror has been killing it delivering some truly amazing films to the big screen that are bringing the chills and thrills and this remake film of the 2023 fright flick “Vash” did just that! The film is draped in black magic and the character of Vanraj is such a creep who really gets enjoyment of tormenting a teenage girl and her family, but even when the family fights back he seems to get joy from it. The films cast is fantastic as our main cast is played by Ajay Devgn, R. Madhavan, Jyothika, Janki Bodiwala and Anngad Raaj who all rock their roles and are very believable as a family and a evil sorcerer. The film did well at the worldwide box office bringing in $1,503,613.00 with a budget of ₹ 65 crore showing that Horror is a hit around the globe. If you like Bollywood horror films, creepy thrillers or films about black magic make sure to check this one out.

Tumbbad (2018) Poster

The always rainy town of Tumbbad is cursed by the greedy and now forgotten God known as Hastar who had stolen all of his mother goddess’ gold but was defeated by his siblings when he tried to all steal all the food, and for this he has been banished to forever live inside her womb and those greedy enough to look for his gold will face a brutal death or can become an immortal monstrous slave to the beast as all they will do is eat and sleep all day long. Vinayak Rao has grown up in Tumbbad and has always been into finding the treasure of Hastar that is said to be hidden inside, and as he grows older and with the help of his cursed Grandmother he truly finds the hiding place of Hastar and has a way to distract the God in order to gain more coins and become very rich by doing so, and as he gets older and has a family he teaches his son how to raid for the gold and even ends up sacrificing one of his friends who wanted to steal from him to Hastar. In the end Vinayak and his son while in the womb must truly work together to survive as Hastar as well has a sinister plan himself that will leave one of them undead and the other broken emotionally. This film was released in 2018 and in 2024 finally was released in the local theaters here in America, and I found it to be a really good and creepy Bollywood fright flick complete with a demonic looking greedy God and even a Evil Dead deadite style grandmother. The film is really about the horror and does not have musical numbers done by the cast as it plays for the scares. The film is a mix of digital and practical effects and both are pretty well done with their being lots of blood and some gruesome moments. The film stars Sohum Shah, Anita Date-Kelkar, Ronjini Chakraborty, Mohammad Smad and all do fantastic in their roles. I am not sure what the film did domestically in America during this run for Blooming Lotus Media. A really good Bollywood horror film and I am looking forward to watching Part 2 when it’s released.

speak no evil (2024) Poster

Ben Dalton has lost his big job and moved from America to England for it, so to get a fresh start he along with his wife Louise and daughter Agnes go to Italy for holiday where they mean Paddy, his wife Ciara and their son Ant and they all hit it off. After the holiday is over Paddy, who is a former doctor invites Ben and his family to come stay a week with them at his farm house in the middle of nowhere, but things start to get really weird as Paddy and Ciara start to act strange and over bearing as they also witness Paddy be very strict and cruel to his own son who is mute. This peaceful week spent with new friends turns into a nightmare when Ant alerts Agnes to what is really going on and now Ben and Louise must figure out a way to get away from Paddy and the farmhouse before its to late. This film is a remake of the 2022 Danish horror film that keeps to core of the story but of course adds in its own twists and turns and delivers a entertaining thriller with two insane baddies in Paddy and Ciara. The film stars James McAvoy, Aisling Franciosi, Mackenzie Davis, Scoot McNairy, Alix West Lefler and Dan Hough all who do a great job on their roles. The film also makes great use of the songs Cotton Eye Joe by Rednex and Eternal Flame by The Bangles. The film did well for Universal at the domestic box office bringing in $36,931,420.00 on a budget of $15million. The film is really good, and McAvoy makes some amazing sinister faces in this fright flick.

Heretic (2024) Poster

Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton are missionaries for the Morman Church and are out trying to spread their message when they come across Mr. Reed, a man who lives out in a strange home who invites them in to chat about religion as a snow storm starts blowing in. But soon the two young girls find that they are trapped in the house with Mr. Reed who is trying to make them question their faith, lives, choses and more as he sets them to witness a miracle, but when the ladies question him on his words, things just get worse and more out of control for them…but will Mr. Reed change their minds or take their lives as Barnes and Paxton must fight for their lives. This is a really interesting horror film that is faith based and has the villain trying to break the will and faith of his captives in order to try and “teach” them a lesson and when the true intensions of Mr. Reed is shown you see just how evil that guy is. The film is well cast with Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East playing Barnes & Paxton and Hugh Grant as Mr. Reed and all are amazing in their roles other cast members include Topher Grace and Elle Young. The film did well for A24 at the domestic box office bringing in $27,791,987 on a budget of around $10 million. If you like your horror films with a dash of art house, make sure to check this one out as it was a great watch.

Gretchen moves with her father, stepmother and half sister to a resort in the Bavarian Alps and from the start she notices that something is not right when she takes a job working the front desk at the lodge as women seem to be always getting sick and acting really weird just like her boss Herr Konig, who is also employing he parents to design a new building, and the front desk closes at a certain time every night. One night after leaving work late, Gretchen is attacked by a strange woman and this triggers events that has a siren song being sung from the woods, people dying of strange causes, her young sister to fall ill, her getting questioned by a former cop and also being targeted by the people of the lodge town who are in power. This is a very strange and yet great indie horror film that has some really creepy moments with a female monster that leaves her offspring in the bellies of human women in order for them to raise, and its setting of a lodge town with people of power in on this strange act and protect the monster just adds to the over all weird factor of the film. It is well acted with Hunter Schafer being outstanding as Gretchen and other cast members like Jessica Henwick, Dan Stevens, Jan Bluthardt, Marton Csokas and Greta Fernandez all great in their roles. This is one of those films that was met with mixed reviews and in some cases judged a little too harshly as people acted like the plot was hard to follow…it’s not. The film did well for Neon at the American box office during its limited run bringing in $5,324,184.00 on a budget of $7 million. A good little spooky film that shows Neon is closing in on A24 when it comes to the strange indie horror films in the theater.

godzilla x kong the new empire Poster

King Kong is living in Hollow Earth and is being watched by the people of Monarch and the massive Titan is lonely as he has not found any of his kind. Meanwhile Godzilla is on a rampage as he is attacking other Titans and stealing their powers as its clear that he is gearing up for something big…and this big event is the coming of The Scar King, another primate Titan who is very cruel and has an army of Kong-like apes at his order as well as an ice breathing Titan that he controls by using pain with the goal of taking over the world and ruling everyone and everything…so Kong must team with Godzilla and the reborn Mothra in order to save Hollow Earth as well as the above Earth from total destruction. This is yet another great film in Legendary Monsterverse series and is packed with lots of giant monster fights as well as for me its always great to see King Kong on the big screen. The film stars such actors as Rebecca Hall. Kaylee Hottle, Dan Stevens, Brian Tyree Henry, Fala Chen and Alex Ferns all who do a great job in their roles. One part of the movie that had the audience and myself laughing is when Kong uses Suko, a small primate Titan, as a weapon, no joke it was the funniest thing I’ve seen on the big screen this year. The film did really well for Warner Brothers at the domestic box office bringing in $196,350,016.00 on a budget of $150 million showing that these giant monsters are a draw at the theaters. This is one I bought on home media when released. Also I hope they keep making these Monsterverse films as I will continue to watch them in the theater.

ALIEN: ROMULUS - © 2024 20th Century Studios. All Rights Reserved.

Rain and her android “brother” Andy are stuck on Jackson’s Star where she has to work for travel freedom and watched as both of her parents died from working the mines for Weyland-Yutani Corporation, but she soon finds a way out when her friends discover an abandoned spacecraft that they can steal the cryostasis chambers to escape to the planet Yvaga and stop being slaves for a cooperation that does not care about them. But once they get to the spacecraft, they find that it’s filled with face huggers as well as Xenomorphs that go on the attack and bring down these friends one by one. And Rain along with Andy (who gets an upgrade) must escape this infested ship all the while Andy’s new program is turning him into a company droid and wanting to do what is right for them and not his friends, but can Rain save herself and what is left of her friends and will she be able to remove the upgrade and get Andy back…watch this great Alien sequel and find out for yourself! I am a fan of the Alien films, and while the past two sequels before this were sort of bland, I feel Romulus has gotten the series back on track and has introduce to very likable characters to the universe with Rain and Andy. The Xenomorphs look great, as do the face huggers. The film packs in lots of creepy settings as well as great scares and even has some Easter Eggs throughout that are connected to the other films in the series. The only thing I was not a super fan of was The Offspring that was a human and alien hybrid. The film did well for 20th Century Films at the American box office bringing in $105,313,091.00 on a budget of only $80 million showing that this series has lots of gas still left in the tank. This is one that I look forward to watching again.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 (2024) Poster

Ruhan Randhawa is a con man who goes around exercising ghosts from people’s homes, he is also a problem solver as he can make it seem like a person was possessed in order to cover up for mistakes that would get them into trouble with loved ones. But Ruhan once more finds himself in a real haunted palace when he is forced to help Meera (who has footage of him being a fraud) and finds that this mansion is being haunted by Manjulika, a woman who was burned alive for killing her own brother, and returned in order to cause death, chaos and fear, but when strange women start to show up to the estate as well as a few goofballs from Ruhan’s past things start to get a little more terrifying as Manjulika is out for blood and revenge and will not let anyone leave alive as this evil spirits true motives as well as story needs to be told and forgiveness needs to happen and at the center of it all is Ruhan who once more shows that he can be a true hero when need be. This third film in the Bhool Bhulaiyaa series is lots of fun as the humor and horror just mix really well here as the scares play creepy when they need to and for laughs when needed. The character of Manjulika is an interesting one as what you think you know about them just might not be the full truth as the true story comes to light in the end and shows why it’s been on such an evil path for all these years. The film stars Kartik Aaryan, Vidya Balan, Madhuri Dixit and Triptii Dimri all who do great in their roles. The film did well for in the domestic release as it brought in $2,230,000.00 on a unknown budget. The Bhool Bhulaiyaa series is really great stuff, and I cannot wait for a fourth film in the series to be made.

Abigail Poster

Abigail is a young ballerina who is the daughter of a very dangerous, rich and violent crime lord who is kidnapped by a group of six people who were hired to do so in order to extort money from her father, but these criminals soon find that they have been tricked by Abigail, who is the one who set this all up as she selected these people who were all responsible for actions that effected her father’s empire…as she is a vampire and her father is Count Dracula and blood will be spilt (or is that drank?) as she takes out her revenge on them as they try to fight to stay alive. This once more proves that the classic Universal Monsters have lots of life in them when they are tackled by the right creative teams, that treat them as scary films and don’t treat them like dated spooky jokes. The film has lots of blood splatter and even some gore and Abigail is one deadly vampire who loves to torment her victims all in the attempt to get her father to pay more attention to her. The film is very well cast with such names as Melissa Barrera, Kathryn Newton, Alisha Weir, Dan Stevens, Will Catlett, Kevin Durand and Matthew Goode all being fantastic as their characters, and I have to say that I think Kathryn Newton is truly becoming one of my favorite horror actresses in these modern days. This is the third attempt from Universal to breath new life into Dracula, and I think this is the best of the modern takes as it was better than “Last Voyage Of The Demeter,” a film I really enjoyed and it was a million times better than the horror comedy mess that was “Renfield” and I hope Universal sticks with making these films scary. One thing I do have to say is that while this is a great film I do wish it was a more modern take of the 1936 film “Dracula’s Daughter” that is one of my favorite sequels in the world of classic Universal Monsters. The film did pretty well for Universal at the domestic box office bringing in $25,867,515.00 on a budget of $28 million, showing that classic monsters truly never go out of fashion. This is one that I loved seeing on the big screen and is one that I bought on home media when released.

Bramayugam Poster

Thevan is a singer who escapes slavery and is trying to get back home to his mother but finds that he cannot when a river and waterfall stands in his way, but while trying to figure out another way, he stumbles into an old rundown mansion in the woods and meets its owner Kodumon Potti who invites the man to stay and when Thevan agrees he soon finds that his host is a black magic sorcerer and that he cannot ever leave and also is in this mansion alongside a Cook, a visiting succubus, a constant rain storm and even a goblin…but not all is what it seems as this mansion is filled with lies as well as is truly cursed! Will Thevan be able to escape or will he forever be stuck in this truly evil mansion watch this black and white Bollywood Horror Fright Flick and find out for yourself. This is a very creepy black magic supernatural horror film that is a slow burn that as the time passes more is uncovered and the feeling of dread builds. The songs and score is also fantastic and help add to the spooky nature of the film. The films stars Mammootty, Arjun Ashokan, Sidharth Bharathan, Manikandan R. Achari and the lovely Amalda Liz and are all fantastic. The film did well at the domestic world box office for Night Shift Studios bringing in $1,388,375 on a budget of ₹27.73 crore showing that horror is popular all over the world. If you like slow burn horror with some supernatural black magic tones and a goblin make sure to give this one a watch!

Longlegs (2024) Poster

Lee Harker is a young FBI Agent who is also partly psychic that is on the case to hunt down and kill a serial killer called Longlegs who has caused the deaths of families over the decades, and the deeper Harker gets into the case, the closer she gets to realizing that her past might just be connected to this crazy devil worshiping killer who has dark powers that force his victims to follow his orders, but is Agent Harker able to solve this killers demented puzzles or will she just have to stand by and watch as more families fall victim to his satanic plan. Make sure to check out this horror thriller and find out for yourself. This is a creepy film from Oz Perkins, who is the son of Anthony Perkins who horror fans know best as Norman Bates in the Psycho film series, that is about a weird satanic cult who gets joy in killing kids and their families on the kids’ birthdays. Nicolas Cage plays the killer known as Longlegs with Maika Monroe playing FBI agent Lee Harker other actors in the cast include Blair Underworld, Alicia Witt, Michelle Choi-Lee, Dakota Daulby and Kiernan Shipka to name a few. The film again proves that Neon is creeping up on A24 for being the must watch company when it comes to indie horror in theaters as I found this one to be a really interesting and creepy watch and is one of Cage’s best performances in horror in many years. The film did well for Neon at the domestic box office bringing in $74,045,655.00 on a budget of $80 million. One I got when released on home media, as I wanted to watch it again. Also this film got a lot of unwarranted hate from viewers, but don’t listen to reviews from critics nor friends and go see the films that get this treatment for yourself.

quiet place day one Poster

Sam is a woman in New York hospice care who was once a published poet and is now spending her remaining days with treatments and her support cat Frodo, when she heads to the city on a field trip with other residents to see a puppet show, the world changes in a instant as things start falling from the sky and monsters start attacking anyone making noise. Now Sam along with other survivors in the city must find a way to stay alive and get to the water as the creatures cannot swim, and on her journey to get pizza before her life ends ,she meets English man Eric who is a law student and the two start up a friendship that sees them watching out for each other, but can they survive or will they make too much noise and become just another bloodstain on the streets of NY, watch this third film in the A Quiet Place series and find out. This is a really fun creature feature, and it’s great seeing these noise sensitive monsters running loose in a big city like New York as it also shows that these creatures are all over and humans are being hunted down and slaughtered in their homes and streets. The creatures are as deadly as ever and deliver many scares with several being jump scares, and its also very well cast with names like Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Djimon Hounsou and Alex Wolff all doing fantastic in their roles. The film did great for Paramount at the domestic box office bringing in $138,930,553.00 on a budget of $67 million. Over all while it didn’t bring anything super new to the series, it was one heck of a good film and is one I bought when released on home media.

Skye Riley is a pop star who has had a rough past year as she had become an addict and a crash left her badly injured and her actor boyfriend dead, but she is on her comeback tour and things are looking up for her that is until her dealer she buys pain pills from takes his own life in front of her with a big smile on her face and now the entity that drove him insane has latched itself onto her and she is starting to fall apart with everyone around her thinking she is using again. But when she meets the brother of a man who died at the hands of the spirit she starts a plan to try and stop this Smile Entity once and for all, but will she be able to do so or will this mega star just be another victim spreading this evil beings agenda to the next person. What a fun and bloody sequel that feels right at home with the original film, and Naomi Scott who plays Skye is fantastic in the role and the pop songs will be stuck in your head days after seeing it. The film was way more bloody and violent than I was expecting and some of the deaths were really gross and well done. Other cast members include Rosemarie DeWitt, Dylan Gelula, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Peter Jacobson, Ray Nicholson and even a cameo from Drew Barrymore. Smile 2 did great at the domestic box office bringing in $68,967,012 on a budget of $28 million showing that Paramount is not just back in the horror business but also they have the start of a great franchise on their hands. A great film and one I bought when released on home media.

Nosferatu (2024) poster

Ellen Hutter is newly married to her husband Thomas who is being sent away by Knock, his boss at the real estate agency he works for in order to sell a very old property in Germany to Count Orlok, a very creepy nobleman from Transylvania who turns out to be a Nosferatu who has set his sites on Ellen who has had a bond with for many of years in her loneliness and along with plagued infected rats he arrives in Germany looking for her to finish their link and along the way Orlok makes her pay for falling in love with another by making her friends pay with their lives. Thomas must escape the castle and return home and along with Doctor Sievers and Professor Von Franz he must save the soul of his wife as well as his village from the plague of Nosferatu. This film is a really great remake of the 1922 silent classic, and the cinematography is stunning and beautiful. It is filled with some great scares, creepy moments, blood and even a few boobs and shows that classic Horror and characters like Count Orlok are truly timeless if done right. The film is well casted with such names as Bill Skarsgard, Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney and Willem Dafoe make up the leads. And I have to say Skarsgard was fantastic as Orlok and Depp ended up surprising me in her performance. The film did well for Focus Features at the domestic box office bringing in $45,201,020 on a budget of around $50 million as of this writing. A fangtastic and creepy classic horror film that is one I will buy once on physical media.

Elisabeth Sparkle is an aging health show star who is turning 50 when her boss decides to let her go, and after having a car accident and meeting a young doctor who gives her a flash drive that is an advertisement for a medial injection called The Substance her life changes as it allows her to spawn a second half that is younger named Sue…but the catch is that they need to switch back and fourth every seven days or there are terrible changes for Elisabeth. And when Sue wants to stay around longer than the seven days, Elisabeth is drained of her age and finds herself becoming a twisted looking being, but can Elisabeth stop Sue as this is the part of her that is becoming the superstar she has always wanted to be or will Sue take over and have to find her own better side…watch this twisted and gross body horror film and find our for yourself. The film feels like a mash off films like Basketcase, Society and many of the films of David Cronenberg as it has lots of gross moments and the human body being distorted. The film is also filled with lots of blood and nudity and delivers a really interesting watch. The film is well casted as Demi Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle and is fantastic as I have always been a big fan of hers, other names in the cast include Margaret Qualley, Dennis Quaid, Gore Adrams and Oscar Lesage to name a few. The film did okay for Mubi at the domestic box office bringing in $16,443,999 on a budget of $17.5 million. If you like gross horror with beautiful ladies make sure to give this one a watch.

The Wonderful Wizard of Wally

Hey, all and welcome back! This time around we are going to take a look at one of Star Comics’ most popular home grown characters, Wally The Wizard. I first heard about Wally The Wizard via a free give away/very cheap subscription on the back of a box of cereal and sent away and got issue # 1 of Wally, Top Dog and Planet Terry for free/dirt cheap. While I didn’t know the character, I found myself liking his over all good nature. While Wally did pretty well for Star, it was lost in the sea of licensed based comics like Ewoks, Strawberry Shortcake, He-Man and many others making him not one most kids would talk about nor trade on the playground. While his impact not very huge, his books lasted for 12 issues longer than many of the licensed based titles, showing his sales had to be good enough to keep him afloat.

Speaking of afloat, here in and around Dayton we had many small movie theaters that aren’t owned by Showcase, The Rave or Regal, and sadly many of them over the past 15 years have slowly gone away.  I guess the small theaters can’t compete with the IMax and stadium seating. While we still have The Englewood Theater in Englewood, Little Art Theater in Yellow Springs and Neon Movies in Dayton, we have lost the likes of Chakeres The Kettering Theater, Flicker Palace in Huber Heights and most sad of all Page Manor in Fairborn. Let’s first talk about The Flicker Palace in Huber Heights, a small theater in the middle of strip mall that hosted many late night horror films and even was the first home of Horrorama (a charity event I’ve been helping with for the last 14 years or so).  Sadly I never got to step foot in Flicker but only heard the stories from friends like Andy Copp, Dr. Creep and Rick Martin about how cool the place was. I have gone and visited the run down shell that was Flicker over the years and when looking inside the windows you see that it has been gutted and I mean gutted.  From the floor up, it’s just one big empty room with gravel floor, It’s a shame that the owners of the strip mall decided doing this to the theater was a good idea and even more of a shame that no one bought this theater after closing and kept it going. Below is a picture of the theater and a picture of Andy Copp and Dr. Creep in the theater.
FlickerAndy and Dr Creep

Next up is the Kettering Theater, an amazing place to see movies when I was younger.  Sure, the seats were rock hard and you would leave with a backache, and sure, the popcorn tasted like it had been under a heat lamp for 3 months but it was still Kettering’s own little theater house before the jumbo movie house in the outside mall, the Greene, moved in. I remember going and seeing movies like Broken Arrow and Austen Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me at the theater and this is even where my brother meet Dr. Creep and sparked our love for the Dayton horror host before I even was in school. The theater’s exterior was an amazing classic style theater, and the inside was very old and should have been updated but the dirt inside also added to the charm of the theater. After the theater went under, the building sat empty for many years until in early 2013 a church bought it to transform into a new meeting place for their congregation.  So sadly, the epic Kettering Theater and its amazing building will now no longer be used for a movie going experience. Below is a pic of the theater, and the pic of my brother Bryan with Dr. Creep.

Kettering TheaterBryan and Dr Creep

Page Manor was the coolest small theater in the area and had not only two screens but also a very small video arcade and hosted lots of fun stuff from Rocky Horror Picture Show at midnight to independent horror films that included one of my old shorts called Hellraiser Warehouse. One of my best memories was seeing Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation when it was finally released for its very small theatrical run and Page Manor was the only theater to pick it up. I was working at Kroger at the time and was a teen who loved horror films.  I became friends with Jason Shivadecker, a guy who was a few years older and who as well loved horror films and also made his own shot on video films. When we heard that Page was showing the new Texas Chainsaw, we were hyped and made sure to get tickets early and plan for this epic night of horror! We got to the theater early as did many fans who were waiting to see Leatherface do what he does best, and that’s when some odd early 20’s something kid was pacing around looking for someone to talk to him.  He targeted us and started to ramble on and on about how he had seen the movie every screening thus far at the Page and how he loved it and how it was the best in the series.  After a few minutes we were able to get away from this super fan and get a seat. We got our seats that were great, and the film started and what we saw was something that would stick with me, not because of the gore and scares but because the film was so silly and dumb that I had a blast watching it. After the film we drove around laughing at the film and then went to a party. Also at that theater I have been to Horrorama’s, late night horror shows put on by Andy Copp and so much more. This was my favorite theater in the area, and when it went under for the second time, a rumor was going around that it was coming back, but sadly this did not come to be and after a fire in the strip mall, it was the owners who decided to demolish the theater. Below is a pic of the great Page Manor as well as a screen grab of Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Next Generation.

Page ManorLeatherface Jacks

One last one just because it was a fun place to see movies was Beavercreek Cinema that later became The Bargain Box Office.  It had multiple screens, terrible popcorn and hard seats but it was a fun time. I went to this theater when I was younger and saw films like Ghostbusters 2 and The Goonies their during their first run and saw second run films when it reopened and became the Bargain Box Office. One fun story I have about this place was when it re-opened my girl at the time, Jennifer, liked Kevin Smith movies while I on the other hand don’t like his work.  But being a trooper, I took her to see Clerks 2 and while being tortured with his unfunny dialogue, a miracle happened as a bat began flying all around the screen and in front of the projector and to me this was a sign from Count Dracula or Batman that I should be at home watching them on DVD. The Beavercreek Cinema is closed now and sits rotting in Lofino’s Shopping Center hoping one day to come back and spread the love of films.

Bargain Box Office

Those are just a drop in the hat of cool theaters that closed.  I mean I know I am not the only one who misses the movie theater that was inside the Dayton Mall. But with that let’s get away from movies on the big screen and take a look at a movie on the small screen as we talk about another Independent B Movie flick, this time directed by Matt Hoffman – none other than The Wolf Hunter or The Werewolf Hunter as it reads in the credits. After Werewolf of Ohio 2, we were on cloud nine, and this was our peak.  Many inside the group including myself really liked the idea of The Wolf Hunter character having his own spinoff movie and none spoke louder than Matt Hoffman who played the character for me. With Hoffman really wanting to play the character again, I went down into the cool basement that was Independent B Movie studios and wrote out a draft that took place before the character’s death and showed that he had his own major foe with a werewolf king called Malice. The script I wrote was about a cat and mouse game played between the two that left many dead and a final showdown that was to take place in some deep dark woods.  The film was to have a higher budget than any of the past films and was set to be the bloodiest one ever made. This, however, was not the case as Hoffman liked the script and went in to rework it, and took out lots of the blood and even the cat and mouse game and added more screen time for just the Wolf Hunter character who now was in 97% of the film, unlike the 75% that the original script had. All of Malice’s kills were cut, and he was pushed more into the background as an almost afterthought until the very end. The end battle was also changed and taken out of the woods and onto an old bridge that in my opinion worked even better than the woods! While at first I was a little annoyed that my script had gone through such a wild and extreme re-write, seeing how proud Hoffman was of this project made that go away fast, and I was happy for my friend who found a character he could truly bond with. Hoffman and I, with his script in hand, set out to cast it and we first hired Brandon Womeldorff as lead camera man and I took up being the second unit camera man. My good friend Patrick Neeley played Malice.  Josh Weinberg played Oliver another werewolf. Jason Gilmore played both werewolf Red-Eye and The Holy Bullet Man, and Amy Hoffman played Amber, the love interest of the Wolf Hunter and lastly we cast Geoff Burkman as Amber’s Father. The film’s plot followed The Wolf Hunter, a loner who takes a job rescuing a young woman named Amber from a werewolf named Oliver who when human loved her.  After her rescue, The Wolf Hunter finds that he himself is in love but makes the mistake of leaving her behind and she is killed by Malice, king of all Ohio werewolves. The rest of the film The Wolf Hunter tracks down and battles Malice to the “death” at an old covered bridge. Filming went fast, and the production had very little set backs and even less in-house fighting. One funny moment on the set had Jason Gilmore, who as Red-Eye fell into the waters of Caesar’s Creek, running around naked behind Matt Hoffman as he gave an on set interview and was clueless to the fact a naked man was moving around behind him. After the film wrapped, Brandon Womeldorff, Hoffman and myself headed to Fairmont and we edited it in two days.

Wolf Hunter VHS

After the film was done, a meeting was called for a screening of Hoffman’s first ever directed film, and the house was packed with almost everyone who was a part of Independent B Movie. Hoffman gave a brief introduction to his film, and then play was hit on the VCR and the film known as The Wolf Hunter started playing on the TV. After the meeting, the film was meet with mix reviews as most just picked it apart because Hoffman made it.  I for one think the film is super fun and cheesy and hits the spot when it comes to a late night flick watching. The film was then made on VHS and sold at conventions and did pretty well  Years later it would also get a DVD release that also sold well. The film also got a t-shirt based on one of the hunting scenes! The film has been reviewed on a number of websites and has mostly been meet with poor reviews because of its production value, but many of them point out the fun and silly over all nature of the film and see the camp value of watching it. Poor reviews aside, the film has built up a very small cult status and is still to this day talked about amongst the old group of movie making friends that made up Independent B Movie.

The Wolf HunterShowdownWolf Hunter 1

Wolf Hunter was filled with lots of “scary” werewolves that were said to haunt Ohio and here real quick, I would like to give you a quick rundown of each werewolf and how they came about. First, let’s take a look at Malice, who was played by Patrick Neeley.  The mask was bought at K-Mart during Halloween time by Hoffman who liked the look of the grey furred open mouthed mask. The character Malice was based on a short film script that was given to me many years before when I worked at Kroger as a bagger by a fellow bagger called Bark At The Moon. In the Bark script, Malice was a sorcerer who lived in the woods and was cursed by magic to become a blood thirsty werewolf. In The Wolf Hunter, we changed it so that Malice is and always has been a werewolf and alongside The Wolf Man (Werewolf of Ohio) has spread the curse all over Ohio. Malice is super strong and also super smart and is protective of his area that contains a covered bridge that acts as his home base.

Malice

The second werewolf is Oliver who was played by Josh Weinberg.  The mask was bought at Wal-Mart around Halloween time and was picked because I thought it looked like Oliver Reed’s werewolf in Hammer horror film Curse of the Werewolf. Oliver was purely based on that Hammer film, and his look in the film was as well, wearing a ripped up button up shirt and black pants.  From day one, Josh was the choice to play the part. When human, Oliver was a rich young man who was dating Amber, the daughter of a media store owner, and he was was attacked on his way home after a date and became a werewolf. Even as a werewolf, he held a love for Amber and kidnapped her and rushed into the woods of Oakwood, where he was attacked by The Wolf Hunter and Amber taken away from him. Oliver has brown fur and is strong but not a pure top powered werewolf.  He also is smart and seems to learn from his past mistakes. His home base is the woods around Oakwood, and he is very protective of his area.

Oliver

The last werewolf of the film is Red-Eye, who was played by Jason Gilmore who was going by the name Max Price, and the mask was bought at Wal-Mart and was very cheap and at first almost didn’t make it into the movie. Red-Eye was written into the film to open it up and be a target for The Wolf Hunter to show his hunting power. Red-Eye wore an old green button up shirt and tan pants and was rocking slick backed black hair and his face has brown. Red-Eye is a weak werewolf who is considered a bottom feeder who only feeds on the leftovers of more powerful werewolves. Red-Eye is weak and is very nervous around humans, and he has no home base area and spends his time roaming.

Red EyeThe Wolf Hunter has a legacy that pleases diehard fans and tickles the funny bones of those who see it as a cheesy action horror film. And while the film is no master piece and by most accounts is no budget trash, I for one am proud I had something to do with it and am even more happy to see my friend Matt Hoffman be so proud of a film he has his heart and soul in.

The new WWE Game has been titled “WWE 2K14” and is now being made by 2K Games after THQ sadly went out of business early in the year. This year, the theme went away from the Attitude Era and is now focused on “30 Years of Wrestlemania” where players get to play through some of the biggest matches in the event’s history like Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant at Wrestlemania III and Hogan taking on Ultimate Warrior at Wrestlemania VI.  But as with last year some top names have been snubbed from being in the game and here is my top 5 list of wrestlers that 2K and WWE should be ashamed of themselves for not including them in the game.  I will also point out key matches that they were involved in.

WWE2K14 Hulk Hogan20909Hotspot-SingStar-80:Layout 1wwe2k14 ultimate warrior

I would also like to point out that while many wrestlers have been snubbed they did include a lot of great names: from the past like Andre The Giant, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Bret Hart, Ultimate Warrior, Big John Studd and King Kong Bundy to name a few.  So good job on those inclusions…but with that let’s get into my snub list. Now for my list I looked at all the past Wrestlemania’s and even watched a few on DVD to get the full dose of matches these grapplers I picked had.  These are all legends of the sport that I truly think were snubbed! So let’s get onto my picks on who should be in WWE 2K14.

rowdy roddy piper

Rowdy Roddy Piper

Rowdy Roddy Piper is a legend in the wrestling world who began his pro career in 1973 when he became a member of the roster for the AWA as what is known as a jobber (a wrestler who is thrown to the top stars to lose).  Piper then went on to wrestle in some of the industry’s top promotions like NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) and GCW (Georgia Championship Wrestling), and in these two places Piper made a name for himself as a solid worker and a master of mic skills. But while in GCW, Piper was blackballed from the territory for showing up late to a match and would work for Puerto Rico and Jim Crocket Promotions. In 1984, Piper made his way to WWF and started out as a manager to wrestlers Paul “Mr. Wonderful” Orndorff and David “Dr. D” Shultz and later became a full fledged member of the roster.  Piper was a bad guy (heel), and his first two major feuds were with Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka and Bruno Sammartino! But in 1985, his most important rivialy took place as Piper was picking on pop singer Cyndi Lauper and wrestling manager Captain Lou Albano sparking WWF Champions to come to their aid and sparking a fight that would take place on MTV at an event called “The War To Settle The Score.”  This match then lead to the first main event at the first Wrestlemania! The match had Hulk Hogan and actor Mr. T taking on Piper and Paul Orndorff, and history was made. Piper would come and go in the WWF/WWE for many years after this and would have many great matches with the likes of Bret “Hitman” Hart, Bad News Brown, Goldust and Adrian Adonis. From almost from the moment he stepped into the company, Piper was also given his own talk show called “Piper’s Pit” where many iconic moments took place from bashing Jimmy Snuka in the head with a coconut to beating up a jobber wrestler with one arm behind his back! Fans have loved and hated Piper over the years, and he is one of the most iconic wrestlers WWF has even had.  So to me, it makes no sense why he is not in the game and since he had many Wrestlemania moments that outshine Goldberg’s terrible match with Brock Lesner. Here is to hoping 2K and WWE wake up and make him DLC. Piper also is in the WWE HALL OF FAME as of 2005!

Key WM Matches: Piper & Paul Orndorff vs. Hulk Hogan & Mr. T (Wrestlemania) and Piper vs. Bret Hart (Wrestlemania 8)

Paul Orndorff

Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff

Before Lex Luger, Ravishing Rick Rude and Dolf Ziggler, Orndorff was the original show off, the man who thought his body was better than everyone else’s but without the glam and with more of a kick ass attitude. Before his pro wrestling career Orndorff was a star on the college football fields and even was picked up to play for the NFL! Orndorff began wrestling in 1976 for many small promotions and even a few major ones like NWA, SCW (Southeast Championship Wrestling) and GCW before going to WWF in 1983 where he had Roddy Piper as his manager and fought guys like Tito Santana and Jimmy Snuka. Orndorff took the side of Piper in his feud with Hogan and had feuded with Hogan up until the main event at the first Wrestlemania. Orndorff would turn good and bad throughout the years and even had a match with Don Muraco at Wrestlemania II. He would have huge matches with Hogan after this event that even lead to steel cage matches and more. In 1988 Orndorff took time away to heal some injuries and would go on to wrestle for WCW (World Championship Wrestling), UWF (Universal Wrestling Federation) and Smokey Mountain. He would end his career with WCW after injuries and worked as a trainer and backstage for the company. In 2005 Mr. Wonderful was inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame. Mr. Wonderful was a hard worker and a great competitor and should be in this game for helping launch Wrestlemania. Without him and Piper, the first event would not be the iconic event we fans view it as.

Key WM Matches: Roddy Piper & Orndorff vs. Hulk Hogan & Mr. T (Wrestlemania) and Orndorff vs. Don Muraco (Wrestlemania II)

Sid Vicious

Psycho Sid

Sid is a man of many names in the wrestling world from Lord Humongous to Sid Justice to Sid Vicious, but most fans know him as Psycho Sid from his time at the top of the WWF! Sid started his career out in 1987 in such promotions as Memphis, New Japan and World Class, but by 1989 WCW had gotten the powerhouse to join their federation.  The master of the power bomb was in full swing as he became a member of the tag team the Skyscrapers and would later become a member of the legendary Four Horseman with Ric Flair, Arn Anderson and Barry Windham. Sid left WCW after a true lack of world title push and left for WWF in 1991 where he became a top runner for the world title and had feuds with The Undertaker and Jake Roberts.  After thinking he had been overlooked for a title shot, he targeted Hulk Hogan who he thought was the man standing in his way. After a fight at Wrestlemania, Sid left the company. In 1993 he returned for a short time to WCW and then went to a few other smaller promotions before coming back to the WWF in 1995 to become Shawn Michael’s bodyguard and once more become a top runner for the world title fighting guys like Diesel, Bret Hart and The Undertaker, having many top profile matches and being one of the company’s top stars. Sid would leave again in 1997 and would finish his top company career out in WCW. Sid was a massive man, and I would love to have him feud in WWE 2K14 with the likes of The Big Show, Andre The Giant and Big John Studd! In 2012 Sid even showed back up on WWE TV with two appearances on Monday Night Raw! Here is to hoping that he is future Legends DLC in the game because I for one would love to powerbomb Daniel Bryan into a table!

Key WM Matches: Sid vs. Hulk Hogan (Wrestlemania 8) and Sid vs. The Undertaker (Wrestlemania 13)

jake roberts the snake.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts

Once more Jake finds himself not in a WWE game that clearly he should be in! Roberts began his wrestling career in 1974 and was a roster member for such federations as Mid-South Wrestling, Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, GCW and NWA, but it was in 1986 when Jake was called up to the WWF and became the Snake! Jake, like Piper, was given his own talk show called “The Snake Pit” and his first major feuds were with Ricky Steamboat and The Honkey Tonk Man. He would change from a heel to a face many times in his WWF run and would wrestle guys like Andre The Giant, Randy “Macho Man” Savage, Ravishing Rick Rude, Earthquake, Rick “The Model” Martel and Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase.  Jake would leave in 1992 and would work for WCW, AAA and Independents before coming back to WWF in 1996 where he was a veteran and was used as a man who had battled demons in his past and was there to talk the word of God to those who would listen. Sadly, Jake was a real life junkie and had burned many bridges and failed many drug tests and this was his first full second chance of becoming a top superstar. During this late 90’s run, Jake also helped spark the “Austin 3:16” catch phrase after a match with Steve Austin at King of The Ring! Jake “The Snake” Roberts has never held a WWF/WWE title and has yet to make it to the Hall of Fame, but he remains one of the company’s top legends that still has fans to this day. Jake should be in this game and here is hoping he will be DLC.

Key WM Matches: Roberts vs. Honkey Tonk Man (Wrestlemania III), Roberts vs. Andre The Giant (Wrestlemania 5), Roberts vs. The Undertaker (Wrestlemania 8)

Note From Matt – Well, I got one right as Jake Roberts will be on the game’s final DLC Pack.

Lex Luger

Lex Luger

While The Total Packahe Lex Luger didn’t make the splash in WWF that Vince and the company were hoping for, he still was a main-eventer who should be in WWE 2K14! Lex Luger began wrestling in 1985 for NWA Florida, and a year later he was working for NWA that later became WCW where he became a main-eventer who would go on to be a member of the Four Horseman and would feud with the likes of Ric Flair, Ron Simmons, Sting and Barry Windham. While there, Luger capture the World Title and become one of the company’s top heels. Luger, however, left them in 1992 and went to work for WWF and its bodybuilding league the WBF.  His first gimmick in the WWF had him playing The Narcissist Lex Luger, a heel who was so egotistical that he would pose and look at himself in mirrors, his major matches being with Mr. Perfect Curt Henning. Luger turned face and became an all American hero type after he slammed Yokozuna on July 4th. Luger would become a top contender for the world title and would feud with such grapplers as Bret Hart, Tatanka, Crush and Ludvig Borga and would later form a tag team with The British Bulldog to be called Allied Powers. Then Luger would shock the world as he showed up on the first episode of WCW Nitro while also being on a taped WWF match the same night. Luger had switched companies and was the first major shot fired at WWF. Luger would wrestle for WCW until 2001 when the company shut down. Luger would then make a few appearances on TNA (Total Nonstop Action) before retiring from the sport due to a spinal stroke. Luger was a power house in whatever federation he was in and should be a member of the 2K14 roster! John Cena would so be put in the torture rack!

Key WM Matches: Luger vs. Yokozuna (Wrestlemania 10)

So there are my top 5 wrestlers that I truly think got snubbed for WWE 2K14 30 Years of Wrestlemania. All the grapplers above were hard working and guys that impacted the event. I am not sure why they were left out but I hope that somehow some way 2K sees this list and gives each of these guys a second look at maybe being DLC. With this let’s get into our main event with Wally The Wizard!

wwe 2k14. logo

Star Comics officially started in 1984 with a three issue movie adaptation of Muppets Take Manhattan, and in 1985 Marvel Comics fully opened up Star as branch that dealt with strictly kids comics.  When Star opened, it had a few cartoon/toy/TV based comics like Muppet Babies, Thundercats, Fraggle Rock, and Care Bears but they also had some original characters like Top Dog, Royal Roy, Planet Terry, Spider-Ham and Wally The Wizard. While most kids flocked to the more well known characters, Wally was one of the originals that I can remember being on the comic rack at United Dairy Farmers next to Spider-Man, Superman and Transformers, and as I said before, I remember getting issue one as a free giveaway and enjoying it. While I do remember reading a few other Wally issues in my youth, I don’t have as much of an attachment to the character like I have for Spider-Ham, another Star original. Wally The Wizard is a kid who has been picked by the great wizard Marlin, the brother of Merlin, to be his apprentice.  While he is good, Wally still has a lot to learn and is in love the the princess of the kingdom. He has two best friends Conrad and Jay who he gets into adventures with, but he also has a demon guardian who is a nice guy named Gorg who watches out for him. The character is pretty simple and would have made a fun film idea if done by Steven Speilberg! The idea of a kids comic character having a demon as a friend was pretty shocking at the time of the whole Satanic Panic that was gripping America so I give the writers props for having the balls to do that. Wally The Wizard is a good mix of kid friendly adventures, fluffy magic and an element of 80’s film fantasy.

Wally The Wizard AdWally StarGorg as Spiderman

With a look back at long gone but not forgotten Dayton Movie Theaters, the rundown of Wally, WWE 2K14 snubs and the epic making of Independent B Movie The Wolf Hunter, I think it’s time now for us to dive into the world of Star Comics and take a look at one of their top home grown characters: Wally The Wizard.  I want to remind everyone that I grade these comics on a standard 1-4 Star scale and look for entertainment value, art, story and how true the comic is to its source material. So let’s dive into the world of a kid wizard that was way before Harry Potter and take our journey with Wally. And thanks to Lone Star Comics and Bell, Book and Comic for having these issues in stock!

Wally 1

Wally The Wizard # 1  ***
Released in 1985   Cover Price .65   Star Comics   #1 of 12

“A Plague of Locust” Wally is an apprentice to Marlin, brother of the famous wizard Merlin, and they are in the business of magic.  His best friends are Conrad (squire to the lead knight) and Jay (a chubby fryer), and after an accident Wally frees a demon named Gorg who pledges friendship for life. Wally makes medicine for the King and rushes to deliver it and along the way meets a dragon and helps save its child from a well. Wally makes it to the king and sees his crush, Princess Penelope, but not so faraway, the King’s evil half sister and her minions have made a giant robot Locust and set it free to bring down her brother’s kingdom. The Locust does major damage but is stopped by Wally who calls upon the Dragon he helped earlier who takes the Locust to the sun, and Gorg helps bring Wally safely back to the ground.

This is a great first issue and is a sure way to get people hooked on Wally’s and his friends’ adventures. In this issue, Wally comes off as a normal youth who questions his role with his master wizard and has a crush on a princess who clearly likes someone else.  He also seems to make friends easily as Gorg the Demon and a Dragon both come to his aid in the end. Princess Penelope is a snooty rich girl who turns her nose up to Wally and in some panels treats him as a low life. I hope she gets more likable in later issues, because as of right now I am not a fan. Jay and Conrad don’t have much to do in this issue and are your normal throw away friends who are around to add humor and friendship to the main character. Gorg is pretty badass and is an evil looking demon who talks of the future, but is an all around good creature who values friendship. One thing cool Gorg does in the issue is turns into Spider-Man and tells the kids of the past that the kids of the future love this look.  The artwork in the issue is pretty good and simple and reminds me of the funny papers in the Sunday paper. For being an original, the story is cheesy kids’ stuff that works, and the cover is very appealing with the pink demon Gorg being a nice addition to draw readers in. I only read this issue when I was younger and liked it then and still like it now.  So I really can’t wait to see what the rest of the series is like.  So with no more wait, let’s jump into issue 2!

Wally 2

Wally The Wizard # 2   **1/2
Released in 1985   Cover Price .65   Star Comics   #2 of 12

“The Magic-A-Thon!” When Marlin was a young wizard apprentice, he won a tournament called the Magic-A-Thon.  Now Wally his young apprentice wants to fallow in his footsteps and trains super hard to do so. Sleepless Knight is a pig of a man who stuffs his face and thinks of a blind date he is to have, but when his fortune cookie tells him the date will be a bust thanks to a wizard’s apprentice, he goes to rid himself of this pest who just so happens to be Wally! At the town square, Sleepless waits for Wally and attacks chopping his spell notes in half and causing him to fall inside a huge hole. After escaping, Wally makes it to the event spelless and manages to win just by using his brain. Sleepless makes one last attempt to kill Wally at the event and fails making himself look silly and running his chances with his date. In the end Wally is cheered, and his teacher Marlin is very proud of his young student.

This second issue while not as good as the first was still a fun read that kept Wally’s charm up and built more on his friendship with Marlin. In issue two, Wally is more into his magic and even makes a few spells that he learned but then also uses his brain to win the Magic-A-Thon. His appearance also changes and so do his attitude, making Wally seem as if he had grown as a character. The bad guy, Sleepless Knight, is a full fledged knucklehead, and it’s amazing that he wants to kill a kid over a fortune in a cookie. A funny flub in this issue is the fact Jay and Conrad seem to have changed who’s who as the names are given to the wrong character! Characters from issue one also make cameo appearances in this issue like Princess Penelope and the King. The art in this one is way more cartoon like, and this makes the events a little more fun.  The story is goofy and very kid appealing, and while the cover is pretty good, it could have been better. This is a good average issue # 2 and would have had me back in my youth. Let’s see if issue # 3 is any good.

Wally 3

Wally The Wizard # 3  ***
Released in 1985   Cover Price .65   Star Comics   #3 of 12

“Folkquest” Wally is down due to the fact he has not gotten any letters from his parents for weeks.  They are servants and seem to have forgotten about him. Wally gets the day off helping Marlin and goes to Vikk, a young Viking boy who lives in the kingdom after falling overboard his father’s ship.  The two feel sad together that is until they hear the news that a Viking ship had anchored and raided a near by castle and kidnapped the servants! Wally and Vikk start of a quest to find the ship and see their parents, but the journey is long and dangerous as they must fight off the evil step sister and giant lake monsters. In the end, only one can make it to the ship, and it’s Vikk who finds that it’s not his dad’s ship and trades his necklace (a gift from his dad) of Thor’s hammer to the captain for Wally’s parents’ freedom. In the end Wally’s parents adopt Vikk into their family leaving everyone happy.

This 3rd issues is a good fun kids comic that is filled with goofy adventure and some cheesy lines that would make any reader smile. It’s shown that Wally is far away from his parents to be Marlin’s apprentice and that he and his family are very close, adding yet more layers to Wally and making him less of a generic kid comic hero. He also gets a new friend in this issue named Vikk who is a young lost Viking boy who lives in the kingdom and is waiting for his dad. Vikk is a nice addition to the Wally family and makes me wonder if he will make more appearances in the series. Adventure and a quest also makes up the issue’s plot and is a fun way to get Wally out of the kingdom and into harm’s way as he is captured, eaten and must use his wits to rescue his parents. The art in this one is well done and much like issue 2, adds more detail to the character.  The story is well done as is the cover making this a good issue worth reading for fans of the first. Let’s check out issue # 4 now!

Wally 4

Wally The Wizard # 4   **1/2
Released in 1985   Cover Price .65   Star Comics   #4 of 12

“The Wand in the Stone” Marlin tells Wally of a story of a wand that has all the power in the world that is stuck in a stone.  The story goes that a master wizard will come along and remove it and become the strongest in the world! Wally’s mind filled with wonder of the story as he and Marling go into the woods to look at the stars and moon, but Marlin has forgotten his glasses and sends Wally back who gets lost and meets a Troll to takes him to the wand in the stone.  As other wizards watch on, Wally removes the wand and becomes the target of all the wizards around who want the power. After doing battle with a few, he decides to put the wand back and is transported back to Marlin’s side with a tale of excitement. The second story in this issue, “The Barbarians Are Coming,” is about a small man named Bul-Bul who looks like a barbarian and gets all the knights in the kingdom worked up as they think an invasion is in the works, but it takes Wally to befriend him and help him get home safe.

Issue 4 is just average and for some reason has two stories instead of one.  This is a change I do not like! Story one: “The Wand in the Stone” is a take on the sword in the stone and fits perfectly in the story this far of Wally and his life/adventures and has he and Marlin charting stars and the moon together. Then Wally performs a feat that shows one day he will be the most powerful wizard. Throw in Conrad for a cameo, and add a small Troll who lives in a small house in the woods, and you have a good adventure. And it shows more adults wanting to kill the young Wally…man, this kid has equal bad luck to go with the good. Story two is “The Barbarians Are Coming,” and while short, it’s a clear throw away and seems very much off from the storyline we have going this far.  While Gorg is back for a brief moment, it mostly follows Wally as he helps a lost short strange old man.  While goofy and light hearted, I just found it to be weak and the pages it takes up should have been used to expand on the Wand in the Stone story. The art in this issue is done by Ben Brown, and while the first stories art is okay, the second seems like a rushed mess and is not appealing to the eye. The cover, however, is pretty cool and has a nice fantasy look to it. With being 4 issues in, I can say so far that Wally The Wizard is a good kid’s comic and makes me really hyped to read issue 5! So with this let’s move on to more magical adventures of Wally.

Wally 5

Wally The Wizard # 5  **1/2
Released in 1985   Cover Price .65   Star Comics   #5 of 12

Wally gets Marlin upset when he trips over a broom and ruins six months worth of work.  Marlin lectures Wally he tells him to always pay attention to things around him. As Wally leaves the lab, he misses as Princess Penelope is being kidnapped and taken to the dark castle of Vastar and his wizard Erasmo who has placed a forcefield around the castle and is keeping the knights from being able to save the Princess. Marlin and Wally figure out that they might be able enter the castle from a hole above it that lets out the smoke from the fires going in the fireplaces. Wally gets the help of his demon friend Gorg who flies him into the hole and into the castle where he is able to free the Princess and spoil the evil one’s attempt for ransom money. The second story is another short one called “Dragon Fire” where Wally outsmarts a dragon as the kingdom’s under its attack!

Once more this takes the approach of having two stories instead of one, and again the second story seems like a waste of pages. Wally and Marlin seem to be at odds at the start of the first story, and this is odd and comes off not as cheery as their friendship has in the past issues. Wally once more uses his skills and mind to figure out how to save the day and once more tries to impress Penelope who comes off as a full fledged brat and is not likable at all in this issue. I do like how Wally clogs the hole and how Gorg once more is his demon self and is a loyal friend to Wally, though I must say I HATE the way Ben Brown draws him.  I feel he rush draws him and makes the character have zero detail. Vastar is a fat evil man who is controlled with greed and power.  His wizard Erasmo looks like a very generic 80’s evil character complete with black goatee! The second story has a dragon who is talked down from attacking by Wally and has the knights once more powerless to stop the challenge that is in front of them and makes you wonder how they stay a free kingdom and not taken over. The art is okay, and while some of Brown’s pages look good, others seem rushed and a mess. I don’t understand why he takes his time on some of it and clearly rushes the next.  His deadlines must have been a nightmare. The cover on this one is also just okay and nothing special. So let’s move on to issue 6 shall we?

Wally 6

Wally The Wizard # 6   ***
Released in 1985   Cover Price .65   Star Comics   #6 of 12

“Terror Mountain” A volcano is about to explode as The King and his people look to Marlin and his science for help, but he has nothing and only tells them all to flee the area and let it explode! The king doesn’t like what he hears and nor do his subjects, and they start to question why the pay him.  But worse for Marlin, his brother, the great magician Merlin, is coming, and while the world thinks he’s the best, his brother knows he’s a con man and is nothing more than a showman. When Merlin shows up with his apprentice Alfred, they wow the kingdom and take two full bags of gold and say they will stop the volcano and head for the border with the money and no intention of stopping the doom of Terror Mountain. As Wally and Marlin watch, the mountain explodes and traps Merlin and Alfred in its smokey death grip.  This causes Marlin and Wally to come to their rescue, and after doing so, Wally pulls a trick of his own as he replaces the gold Merlin conned away from the king with rocks, and together he and Marlin return to the Kingdom to give the King his gold back.

This issue is 100% a blast and has Wally being a hero and showing that he was the right choice for Marlin’s apprentice. I also like that is fleshes out Marlin and shows a little of his back story in a flashback of he and his brother growing up. Also Star took a huge chance and took a character that every one loved like Merlin the Magician and has him be a complete fraud that’s nothing more than cheap tricks that fool everyone into thinking he is powerful when really he is just a thief. Doing this was a bold move because it changes the image of a character who fans of King Author really love. I also like how the true meaning of this story is science vs. magic, and they want to prove magic is fake and science is real.  Odd move for a comic that is based around a kid wizard. Alfred, who is Merlin’s apprentice, is a good hearted kid but it’s clear he is learning at a young age to fool people and to con them of their money.  I am hoping that both Merlin and Alfred show back up in this series. This issue is back to one solid story, and this is a good thing as I would say that this issue next to issue # 1 is the best issue in the series thus far! The art is good and is down by Brown again, and time was taken.  The cover is pretty good and eye catching with its use of purple. After this issue I can’t wait to see what the next issue has to offer. Also this marks the half way point and makes me wonder if this series will stay solid or start to fall apart.  Only the future issues will tell!

Wally 7

Wally The Wizard # 7  **1/2
Released in 1985   Cover Price .65   Star Comics   #7 of 12

Wally is trying to make a magic elixir and makes a mistake and makes a mess, causing Marlin once more to be mad at him and tells him to go do something helpful. So Wally along with Conrad takes on the task of hanging flyers of the kingdom’s jousting competition where the winner gets the honor of being the best.  The odds on favorite is Sir Flauntaroy who is the King’s top knight. While in a small village, Wally meets Lucretia The Witch who has a strong dislike for Flauntaroy and gives an amulet to Wally to give to him for good luck, but it’s really a cursed item that causes fear! Wally rushes back to the Kingdom to get the amulet to Flauntaroy as Lucretia sends her nephew Heinous to enter the competition and to kill Flauntaroy who shot her down for a date years before. Wally gets the help of Gorg and makes it to the event as Flauntaroy is about to take on Heinous, and the evil plan backfires as Heinous is the one scared and Flauntaroy wins the event. The second story in this issue is called “Wrong Number” and has Wally and Marlin using a crystal ball to call another wizard friend to help cure a headache.  Things get crazy when Wally uses an old pan to do the same and wires get crossed and this effects Flauntaroy, The King and Penelope who all get caught up in the crazy mayhem. All the while, two crooks try and steal gold and get caught thanks to the mayhem.

Issue seven is back to two stories, and once more both are just okay with each being about the same and neither of them being the true stand out.  If I had to pick one, I would say the first story was better and because it introduces two new bad guys with Lucretia The Witch and Heinous. This issue is not really special, and while entertaining, neither story really adds anything to the world of Wally. In both stories Wally is still the fun loving wizard in training and is as likable as ever. Conrad gets his time to shine again and shows up as a background character in both stories and is shown to have a slight ego, but yet is a good friend to Wally. Marlin walks the line again of being a grumpy old man who is short tempered with Wally and yet still very loyal to his young friend. Princess Penelope is shown once more to be a terrible brat who is unlikable in every way. Lucretia The Witch is an odd faced old crazy lady who thinks that she is hot when she is not! Heinous is a big goof with a mean streak and a small brain, nothing special just a dumb brute. The artwork by Brown is good in both stories, and the cover is pretty eye catching.  I must say though, that doing the two stories in one comic always seems to cheapen both stories overall.  I’m not a fan of the two. So let’s move onto issue eight and see if it can get this average issue out of my mind.

Wally 8

Wally The Wizard # 8   **1/2
Released in 1985   Cover Price .65   Star Comics   #8 of 12

Wally meets a gnome and saves him on accident and as a thank you he is given a magic rope that when a magic word is spoken makes whatever it’s touching disappear. Wally accidentally says the word as Sir Flauntaroy is touching it, and this makes the kingdom’s top knight disappear! Wally and Conrad rush to the mountain where he met the gnome to see if he has a word to make things appear.  While on this quest, they run into a race of ogre type creatures called the Gooniks who are very mean and are the rivals of the gnomes who save the two from being Goonik food by lowering a bridge across a ravine that separates the two enemy races.  But this is bad as The Gooniks start to build a bridge of their own to get across and end the feud once and for all! Wally gets the magic word, and Sir Flauntaroy appears and joins in on the plan to stop them from making it over! At the end Wally figures it out and tricks The Gooniks who fall into the ravine and make homes in the caves below and away from the gnomes.

This issue is pure Wally, and while side characters like Marlin, Conrad, Sir Flauntaroy and even Princess Penelope have appearances, this is a pure Wally adventure, and it’s okay. The issue is one adventure and not two, and this is the style I like. I did find this issue and the story to be filled with some fun kid friendly adventures. I am going to guess that the magic rope will never come back in any future story and nor will the Gnomes or Gooniks, and this is a shame.  A follow up story at some point to tell what has happened with both sides after the feud is over would be nice to see or even hear about. The artwork done by Brown is once more his A game and not rushed, and the cover is eye catching and makes the issue look scary and adventurous. Over all this is an okay issue and doesn’t offer up much to talk about so let’s move on to issue # 9 in the Star Wally The Wizard series.

Wally 9

Wally The Wizard # 9  ***
Released in 1985   Cover Price .65   Star Comics   #9 of 12

It’s a dark and rainy night, and Princess Penelope is deathly sick.  The King and Marlin are trying everything they can to make her better and even have banned commoners from entering the castle or going near her. Wally is upset and feels that he is going to lose the love of his life forever as by the hour, she gets more ill. Wally gets the help of Gorg and travels to the past to find out that the Princess ate a poisoned mushroom which gave her the Fungus Hermungus sickness.  Then they travel to the future and find how to cure the sickness and steal a pill to make her well. When they return, it looks grim for the Princess until Wally and Gorg sneak in and give her the pill.  When The King and subjects enter the room Princess Penelope is better, and they credit Marlin for her recovery! At the end Princess Penelope knows Wally and Gorg were her true saviors and rewards them with a blown kiss at a parade.

This is a classic fun and silly kid comic story and is done really well and super entertaining! The plot has Wally and Gorg travel time to find a cure to save the Princess and for some reason this reminded me of “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and “Mr. Peabody.”  The part that puts Wally in modern New York is just a really cool concept and brought the character closer to kids of 1985. In this issue Wally is not only a hero, but also shows a softer more emotional side as he cries thinking about loosing his love. Gorg is as cool as always and is the true reason the Princess gets cured as his time traveling skills and his Gargoyle friend are the keys to getting the pill. Princess Penelope is way more likable in this issue.  Through most of it she is sick, but it’s the end where she shows love and respect for Wally and Gorg that makes her come off more charming. Marlin is not in this issue that much, and when he is he comes off as a worried wizard who wants to help a dying girl. The art in this issue is just okay with Wally and the other humans looking a little off.  This art does have Gorg looking better than his past few issue appearances. The art this time is done by Bob Bolling.  With an eye catching cover and a solid one story, this issue is great and makes me look forward to the next.

Wally 10

Wally The Wizard # 10   **1/2
Released in 1985   Cover Price .65   Star Comics   #10 of 12

Wally is having nightmares about Princess Penelope being kidnapped by Vastar and his wizard Erasmo as well as the kingdom being under attack by a giant Goblin Grape! Wally tries to warn Marlin about his nightmares that could be visions of the future and is blown off. Wally is shown some gnats who when used can eat off the clothes of those who have a salt sprinkled on them. So Wally, Jay (remember his Chubby friend) and Alaina the Princess’ young maid all travel to Vastar’s castle and find that in fact they do have a giant grape that will eat everything in its path! Wally and Jay shake the salt on Vastar and Erasmo but are caught and taken to the castle’s cell before they can release the gnats. Alaina leaves to warn the kingdom of the gobbling grape doom that is headed their way, as Gorg and a magic spell rescue Wally and Jay who release the gnats in time.  They eat the clothes off the would be conquerers several times in fact, and even getting the salt on the grape that is eaten away. This make makes the baddies flee, and the kingdom safe once again.

This issue is pretty good, but I’m not so sure as I feel it was lacking something that would have made it better. I will say the story felt more like a back up story than a full issue one like it was. Wally once more saves the kingdom and gets no credit for doing so. Wally has turned into quite the hero over these past ten issues and is a great character for kids of the time to look up to. While in the comic, Jay is not used that much and is given very little to do besides play the role of bit player as goes for Marlin in this issue. Alaina gets to shine and shows that she is a loyal, loving friend to Wally.  She has the world’s largest crush on him that has built up in every appearance she has made so far in the series. I must say Alaina is a likable character and up to this point is barely used, and that’s a shame.  She is more perfect for Wally than the Princess is and here is to hoping he sees that by the next two issues. Vastar and Erasmo return as the issue’s baddies and once more are outsmarted by a kid, making them perfect bad guys for this style of kids fantasy comic. Howard Post did the art in this issue, and it really reminded me of Archie Comics and that’s a cool thing.  The cover on this issue is just so-so and could have been better.  Overall this issue is okay but nothing special.

Wally 11

Wally The Wizard # 11   ***
Released in 1986   Cover Price .65   Star Comics   #11 of 12

The King is having a feast at the castle that has all the royalty from all around gathering to partake in the eating of great food. Sir Evilus and his mother are not happy that they were not invited to the feast and have a plan to attack and take over the Kingdom.  But in the mother’s crystal ball she sees that it is Wally who stands in their way of winning this soon to be war, but her son pays it no attention and prepares for the attack. In the morning Evilus attacks and is getting the upper hand until his men kidnap Wally and by mistake a vanishing spell by Mother only makes half his body disappear.  The young wizard’s apprentice is nothing more than a floating head scares off the army when they think he is a ghost! In the end the spell wears off, and Wally once more saves the Kingdom, but the credit goes to Marlin who poured water on the army below.

This is another light hearted fun and wacky adventure for Wally to be in and marks yet another time he saves the Kingdom and gets zero credit for doing so. Wally is good natured though and never seems to be bothered that he gets no credit and just seems to enjoy the life he was given. Marlin once more is back to full grump mode and is so pushy that magic is fake and science is real, he even skips the feast in order to work on an experiment. Conrad, Jay, Alaina, Princess Penelope and Sir Flauntaroy all make cameos but are given nothing special, besides once more Penelope is a snobby brat. New baddy Sir Evilus is pretty cool as he looks like what you would think of for an evil knight complete with black goatee and evil witch of a mother.  While a cool bad guy, he does not come off as a threat to the Kingdom, but his army does. The plot is fun and gets to add a slight horror element to this kids’ comic as Wally acts as a ghost and superstition comes into play about bad omens and haunted castles. Ben Brown is back on art, and the issue looks nice and is some of his better work in the series thus far.  The cover on the other hand is kind of blah and not as eye catching as it should be. Well we are at the tail end of Star Comics’ Wally The Wizard and have only one issue to go.  So here is hoping that it goes out with a bang and not a whisper.

Wally 12

Wally The Wizard # 12   **1/2
Released in 1986   Cover Price .65   Star Comics   #12 of 12

Wally and Jay are messing around with magic, and a mistake leaves Jay turned into a human frog! Marlin witnesses this and is angered by Wally’s mistake and tells them only a kiss from a Princess can save him from a life of being all green.  They try Princess Penelope and her kiss fails.  They then travel along with Conrad to another kingdom and that princess’ kiss fails too. Jay is upset and flings himself into a swamp and is almost killed by a whirlpool! They rush him back to the kingdom, and a true heartfelt kiss from Princess Penelope brings him back into human form. The second story is called ” The Magic Bulls Eye.” Crazy Ethelred is a wizard who will do magic for cheaper then any other wizard in the land, and when the King falls for his tricks, it’s up to Wally and Conrad to show him it’s all fake and the trickster wannabe wizard instead gets a job in the kingdom as the Court Jester.

Story one is pretty good and is a take off the Frog and the Princess.  Wally once more makes a mistake, and this time his poor chubby friend Jay pays the price. Wally is very much upset over his mistake and travels all over to make it right. Jay as a frog is a crybaby who even at one point appears he is going to commit suicide as he runs into the swamp that’s filled with all types of hazardous creatures. Princess Penelope once more is a brat and only when it looks like Jay will die, is her kiss heartfelt.  She is not a likable character, and one does wish that Wally would wake up and see that Alaina is better for him. The second story is good and is a nice add on to the issue, but also it’s nothing special and is not worth really looking into. The art in this final issue is done by Howie Post with Ben Brown doing the second story, making it cool to see that Brown at least got to do artwork for the final issue in the series. Brown’s artwork is better than Post’s, and thats not a dig at Post as his art is well down and captures the feel of 70’s kid comics. The cover however is kind of bland, and I wish it would have had something a little better. Over all this issue is okay and not the best way to end the legacy of Wally on.

Star Comics made a good solid character in Wally The Wizard, who in his 12 issue run went on many adventures, saved the Kingdom many times, made friends with creatures like demons and gnomes, fell in love, became an apprentice to a wizard, went to the future and so much more. Kids in the 80’s didn’t have many kid comic characters that they could claim as their own and in the decade of sword and sorcery Wally fit in like a glove to become a likable character they could latch onto. While again I didn’t hear kids speak of Wally, his 12 issue run proves that kids were buying, and the fact that I at 34 still remembered him shows that he made an impact for those of us who read him. I must say that this series based on a Star original is really a fun read and a very good series and makes me looking forward to rereading and reviewing Planet Terry, Spider-Ham, Royal Roy, Meet Misty and Top Dog! This also made me really miss Star and wish they would have lasted longer.  Think of the possible IP’s and new characters that could have been! At some point in 2014, I will do one more “Should Have Been in the Star Comics World” and will get a few more friends as well to tell you what they would have loved to seen. But with this I am off to read more comics and maybe play some WWE 2K14 on PS3.  So see you all next update that will showcase a guest reviewer as my girlfriend, Juliet Fromholt will take you down here memory lane as she takes a look at Topps Comics’ Season 1 of The X-Files! So be there if you want to believe…..
